Sketching random people encountered while having meals or chilling in cafes -- my usual go to places are kopitiams (eateries) near where I stay. People come and go and there is always no lack of subjects to sketch from. People move all the time so you are constantly managing time to complete a drawing, simplifying as you go and capturing the essence of their poses, shapes and sizes.

Sometimes I get it right:). Just a quick sketch of the amazing @figure.study.model done alongside my students online over Zoom, refined afterwards from Instagram sources in the tiny sketchbook. Female Figure Gesture Drawing

In this gesture drawing, female figure stands with all her weight on the right leg, and the left leg is used for balance. Most often, I use willow charcoal for gesture, but here I also used conte. I like the pose, but some things could be improved. I left the right leg unfinished, and I actually like the way it looks.

Did a little semi-mindless gesture drawing while waiting for the oven to preheat.

Not the prettiest composition of little sketches, but that's not exactly the point of gesture drawing, is it? Not everything needs to look like an intentional, finished thing.

It's making me realise that I don't draw a wide range of bodies. Though that's not intentional, I just tend to draw the same handful of characters over and over again. I just need to draw more all around.

It's so easy to say "I just need to draw more", but I'm back to work on Monday. I'll forget what it means to take a break and do things I enjoy until the next time I'm off. It's so hard to balance doing the things I enjoy, and getting the bills paid without spiralling into ill health.
