The new features of the iPhone in 2024 were leaked

Apple wants to add several new features to the iPhone and the iOS operating system next year.

As 2023 draws its last breaths and 2024 is ready to sit, it is not a bad idea to take a look at the previously announced or rumored features that will make their way to the current and future versions of Apple's mobile operating system, iOS 17 and iOS 18, next year.

It is worth considering that this feature was originally supposed to reach users this month with the iOS 17.2 update; But for unknown reasons, Apple decided to remove it at the last minute of beta testing. Now, the iPhone manufacturer's website has promised the return of the mentioned feature in one of the iOS 17 updates in 2024.

Airplay on hotel TVs

Following the release of iOS 17.2, Apple updated its website to announce the delay of the AirPlay feature on hotel TVs until next year.

With the help of the discussed feature, iPhone users will be able to connect with AirPlay by scanning a QR code on hotel TVs and wirelessly stream videos, images and music from their Apple phones. Of course, users of the Google operating system can now stream content from their Android phone to the TVs of some hotels thanks to the Chromecast feature.

Roy Campbell was a South African poet and satirist and to this day remains criminally under appreciated. He was considered by T. S. Eliot, Dylan Thomas and Edith Sitwell to have been one of the best poets of the period between the First and Second World Wars. Campbell's vocal attacks upon both Stalinism and Freudianism, and support for Francisco Franco's Nationalists during the Spanish Civil War, has caused him to be labeled a Fascist and left out of modern poetry anthologies.

Roy Campbell, was born in Durban, South Africa, and moved to England soon after he graduated from high school. An accomplished horseman and fisherman, he also became fluent in Zulu. He left the Union of South Africa in December 1918 for Oxford University, where he arrived early in 1919. However, he failed the entrance examination. Reporting this to his father, he took a philosophical stance, telling him that "university lectures interfere very much with my work", which was writing poetry.

Campbell left Oxford for London in 1920. Holidays spent in wandering through France and along the Mediterranean coast alternated with periods in Bohemian London. In 1922 he married without parental consent and forfeited, for a time, the generous parental allowance. His wife was Mary Margaret Garman, eldest of the Garman sisters, was part of the famous literary Bloomsbury group that incuded Virginia Woolf. Mary would go on to have a scandalous lesbian love affair with Vita Sackville-West. Both she and Roy had two daughters, Teresa (Tess) and Anna.

In England, Roy befriended poets such as Wyndham Lewis, who based a character in his novel The Apes of God on Campbell. Campbell’s first book, The Flaming Terrapin (1924), brought him immediate acclaim; as T.S. Eliot does in The Waste Land, to which Campbell’s book is sometimes compared, Campbell rebels against postwar cynicism and apathy. And like Eliot, Campbell eventually converted to Catholicism.

Elizabethan dramatists such as Marlowe, Chapman, and Dekker inspired Campbell’s poetry, and his work fit uneasily into the socially conscious turn affected by many English poets in the 1930s. His second book, The Wayzgoose (1928), satirized South African intellectuals, and his third, The Georgiad (1931), attacked the mores and pretentions of Bloomsbury, whose members Campbell called “intellectuals without intellect.” He also wrote more lyrical collections, including Adamastor (1930), Flowering Reeds (1933), and Talking Bronco (1946).

Campbell led an adventurous life; after The Flaming Terrapin was published, he traveled back to South Africa to edit the literary magazine Voorslag with William Plomer and Laurens van der Post. Campbell soon returned to Europe. In the 1930s, Mary and Roy Campbell moved to the south of France among Augustus John, Aldous Huxley, Sybille Bedford and Nancy Cunard.

They soon grew tired and moved to Spain. They had initially arrived in Barcelona in the autumn of 1933, having lived for several years in Provence. Their arrival coincided with the anarchist strikes that had followed the Right-wing victory in the recent elections. “For the Catalonians, as with the Irish, politics is a national industry,” Campbell wrote to a friend. In spite of the turbulence of the times, the Campbells fell in love with Spain and Spanish culture. Mary’s enduring love for the figure of St Teresa of Avila had fired her imagination for Spain since her youth, and she had evidently passed this imaginative fire infectiously to her husband, as is evidenced by the poetry about Spain that he wrote after his arrival in the country.

Campbell wrote: “From the very beginning my wife and I understood the real issues in Spain. There could be no compromise… between the east and the west, between credulity and faith, between irresponsible innovation… and tradition, between the emotions (disguised as reason) and the intelligence.”

Tired of the brief interlude of urban life, the Campbells moved to the village of Altea, near Alicante, in May 1934. It was here that the whole family was received into the Catholic Church.

Fr Gregorio, the village priest, was delighted that a whole family of “English” was being won over to the Church. Two years later, the priest would be murdered by militiamen sent from Valencia. By this time, as we have seen, the Campbells had moved to Toledo, which Campbell eulogised in one of his poems as a “sacred city of the mind”.

Fighting in the Spanish Civil War and World War II and serving in East and North Africa and the East gave him the inspiration to write his more haunting poetry. Campbell published two autobiographies during his lifetime: Broken Record (1934) and Light on a Dark Horse (1951). He also translated work by Spanish, Portuguese, and French writers, including St. John of the Cross, Baudelaire, and Lorca, and novels by de Quevedo, among others.

In April 1957, Roy and his wife Mary set off in their tiny Fiat 600 from their home in Portugal, destined for the Holy Week celebrations in Seville. En route they stopped off for several days in Toledo, “this heavenly place which means more than all the world to me”, as Campbell described it in a postcard sent to a friend. Throughout the week of processions in Seville, Mary noticed that her husband was unusually quiet and particularly serious in his devotions.

On April 23 they set off back to Portugal, crossing the border in the early afternoon. A front tyre burst, and the car swerved out of control and hit a tree. Mary survived - she would die in 1979 - but Roy died at the scene of the crash. Thus ended, at the age of 55, the life of one of the finest and most controversial poets of the 20th century, a poet who counted George Orwell, Aldous Huxley, T S Eliot, Evelyn Waugh, J R R Tolkien and C S Lewis among his friends.

As regards his friendship with Tolkien, it is one of Campbell’s intriguing claims to fame that he was part of the inspiration for the character of Aragorn, who was played by Viggo Mortenson in the movie version of The Lord of the Rings.

Tolkien first encountered Campbell as a mysterious stranger in a pub in Oxford in 1944 who was listening intently to the conversation of C S Lewis. As Campbell peered intently at Lewis from under a wide-brimmed hat, he reminded Tolkien of Aragorn, the mysterious stranger who eavesdropped on the conversation of the hobbits in the Prancing Pony, the pub in the story in which the hobbits first meet Aragorn. Since Tolkien was in the midst of writing The Lord of the Rings at the time, and was deeply impressed by the adventurous life that Campbell had lived in Spain and elsewhere, it seems likely that Campbell helped to shape Aragorn’s character in Tolkien’s imagination.

Jeff Bezos Exits as CEO, but His Role at Amazon Will Likely Be Little Changed

Behind the scenes, the founder had been laying the groundwork for such a move for years, according to people who work closely with him. So much so, that when Mr. Bezos signaled to the board around six months ago that he was ready to move to a new role, the directors weren’t surprised. He had already been involving himself less and less in day-to-day management, said one of the people.

Among the most successful entrepreneurs in history, the famously driven Mr. Bezos developed a hard-charging work culture in Amazon. AMZN -2.00% Over the past several years, the 57-year-old has focused much more on high-level strategic decisions, and has made clear he would like to build a legacy for himself that goes well beyond Amazon.

Tech founders are often succeeded by their opposites, typically older executives with greater managerial experience. Mr. Bezos wanted someone more like him.

Andy Jassy, whom Mr. Bezos promoted five years ago to CEO of Amazon’s cloud business and who will take over as CEO of the company later this year, fit the bill. He started his career at Amazon in 1997, acted as Mr. Bezos’s technical assistant early on, and drove the creation of Amazon Web Services, which dominates cloud computing and accounts for the bulk of Amazon’s operating income.

“Jeff always made clear that his greatest fear is that ‘if I got hit by a bus, you would pick somebody to succeed me who was unwilling to take risks and launch new efforts,’ ” said Tom Alberg, a longtime director who retired from the board in 2019. Amazon’s board has a succession planning meeting every year to discuss major moves at the company.

Mr. Bezos was front and center in the CEO role last year in ways he hadn’t been for a while, as he publicly guided the company’s response to Covid-19 and was drawn into intensifying U.S. government scrutiny of Amazon’s competitive practices.

The pandemic initially disrupted Amazon, putting new demands and risks on its huge workforce of warehouse and delivery workers. It has since proven to be a boon to the company, propelling revenue for 2020 up 38% to $386.1 billion.

Mr. Bezos accelerated hiring, and Amazon increased its employee count by 63% last year to 1.3 million. People close to Mr. Bezos said he was involved every day in guiding Amazon’s pandemic response during the crisis.

Strategic guide

Mr. Bezos likely reversion to his role as Amazon’s strategic guide has left many Amazon shareholders sanguine that the company’s trajectory won’t change much. Amazon’s stock, which rose 76% last year was up nearly 4% so far in 2021 before sliding 2% in Wednesday trading.

“I don’t worry about this as a major change in the direction of Amazon, or that it will lose its way,” said Trip Miller, managing partner of Gullane Capital LLC, which he said owns roughly $25 million in Amazon stock. “This has been in the works for a while obviously. [The pandemic] was one more challenge Amazon faced in the last year, and it performed quite well in a struggling economy.”

In Amazon’s first decade or two, Mr. Bezos was involved in the minutiae of its operations. “There is no rest for the weary,” he wrote in a shareholder letter reviewing 1998. “I constantly remind our employees to be afraid, to wake up every morning terrified.”

As the company grew, Mr. Bezos was drawn to specific projects that fascinated him, including the 2014 Fire Phone, which flopped, and the Echo smart speaker, powered by a virtual assistant called Alexa, which was a success. The idea came from Mr. Bezos’s vision of a home equipped with a device like the spaceship computer on “Star Trek.”

In April 2016, Mr. Bezos gave bigger titles to his two top lieutenants. Mr. Jassy, who had been senior vice president, was named CEO of Amazon Web Services, and Jeff Wilke, who ran the better-known retail operation, became CEO of Consumer Worldwide.

The move was widely seen as an indication of succession plans, something the board had become especially attentive to the previous decade, after Mr. Bezos survived a helicopter crash in Texas in 2003.

The appointments also underlined that Messrs. Jassy and Wilke had more authority over day-to-day decision making, enabling Mr. Bezos to spend more of his time on nascent Amazon businesses, including its Hollywood arm, Amazon Studios. He was less visible in the company’s routine operations.

Mr. Bezos would quip that the only time he really knew all that was going on at Amazon was in its annual budget meetings.

“He’s not super involved in the day-to-day operations,” Matt Garman, a veteran of Amazon’s cloud-computing division and top lieutenant to Mr. Jassy, said of Mr. Bezos in a 2019 interview. “I met with him more in the first 18 months than I probably have since.”

In an interview on stage at the Economic Club of Washington, D.C., in 2018, Mr. Bezos emphasized his hands-off approach, saying he rarely took meetings before 10 a.m. or after 5 p.m., and focused on strategy over detail. “If I make, like, three good decisions a day, that’s enough,” he said.

He had long championed innovation and reinvention, exhorting his employees to treat Amazon as a startup long after it had become a colossus.

In that spirit of reinvention, he increasingly became fixated on projects and goals beyond Amazon. He purchased the Washington Post in 2013, and had started rocket company Blue Origin in 2000.

Founders of the tech giants have shown a penchant for taking on ambitious new projects. Bill Gates stepped aside as Microsoft CEO after 25 years and devoted himself to reinventing philanthropy. Google co-founder Larry Page, even before stepping back from his management role in 2019, had devoted his time and wealth to side projects developing flying cars.

Mr. Bezos has taken particular interest in Blue Origin, which competes with Space Exploration Technologies Corp., or SpaceX, run by Elon Musk —Mr. Bezos’s rival for the title of world’s wealthiest person.

Mr. Bezos for years has funded Blue Origin, whose annual budget tops $1 billion, by selling some of his shares in Amazon. He devotes every Wednesday to Blue Origin, using a conference room to take meetings and get updates.

In a public appearance in 2018, Mr. Bezos described Blue Origin as perhaps more important to him in the long run than Amazon because it would help keep human civilization dynamic and avoid stasis.

Other changes were happening in Mr. Bezos’s personal life. In 2018 he surpassed Mr. Gates to be declared the world’s richest man. The father of four, who had long depicted himself as low-key despite his wealth, started spending more time at Hollywood parties and events, as Amazon’s entertainment business grew.

In January 2019, Mr. Bezos announced he and MacKenzie Scott, his wife of 25 years, would divorce. Mr. Bezos, often with his girlfriend, Lauren Sanchez, appeared at concerts and flashy beach clubs like Club 55 in St. Tropez, hanging out with celebrities and yachting around with other billionaires.

In April, members of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee’s Antitrust Subcommittee demanded he testify after a Wall Street Journal article showed that Amazon employees had used proprietary data on outside vendors that use its platform to create rival products—something the company had publicly denied doing.

At a subcommittee hearing in July where Mr. Bezos testified with three other Big Tech CEOs—his first such appearance before Congress—Mr. Bezos often appeared uncertain about how Amazon and its products worked, and pledged to find answers later.

In August, Amazon announced that Mr. Wilke would retire. He told the board months earlier, one of the people familiar with the matter said. The move left Mr. Jassy as the heir apparent.

About six months ago, Mr. Bezos told the board he was ready to make the move to executive chairman. The news was a closely guarded secret within Amazon, with some senior executives not knowing until they saw the press release Tuesday, according to other people familiar with the situation.

Several of Mr. Bezos’s latest Instagram posts have been related to Blue Origin. On Jan. 14, he posted a picture of himself stepping into a space capsule.

About a week ago, he shared a picture of a “hotfire test” of a Blue Origin engine. “Perfect night!” he wrote in the caption.

I wake up in the midst of the mud and the circle. I drift back off until the feel of the drizzling rain woke me fully. I stumble up and down the hill to the little pub called The Standing Stones. I find a seat in the back, trying to be inconspicuous as I await the arrival of Master Raymond. I thought I was until the old lady appears at my table.

"Ye just came through, eh?"

"How did?"

"I danced there this morn. I ken'd someone was coming." She brings me a cup of hot tea and then leaves me to wait on Master Raymond.

Master Raymond

I knew where he would be. It was our normal meeting place in this time. I found him, sipping hot tea at a corner table and ordered the same.

"So, you've news for me?" I knew he did calling this meeting earlier than normal.

"Yes, I have four people in my time that you know." I must have made some sort of noise because he placed his hand over mine.

"They are safe."

Merlin

I knew he would be shocked. I am glad I can reasure him.

"How long?"

"A few months now. It did take Paul and your daughter a bit longer to recover then it did Claire and Jamie. I married them after they did. They assured me that that is what they wanted."

"It was. And I also. They love each other and he is a good man." He seems to be seeking assurance on the care of his daughter.

"He is. She is safe with him."

"You will be bringing them here, then?"

"I will. But will need some stuff from you first. But let's go somewhere where we can talk freely. And I need a bit more rest."

"Of course. Let's go." We head out to his car. It is all I know until I wake to the smell of bacon and eggs the next morning.

Master Raymond

"What do you need from me?" I ask him over breakfast.

"Birth certificates for them. Claire's may be more difficult since she was born here in 1918." He replies between bites.

"We will have to make it in Fraser. We will get marriage certificates for both couples. Everyone will assume she is a Fraser who married a Fraser. Tianna's will be Tianna Lucia. Paul's and Jamie's also in Fraser."

"That works. I also need to go shopping. Claire has requested some things and I want to get them clothing so, when they come through, they blend in."

"Perfect. Newspapers too."

"Yes. I promised that."

Merlin

We go to the food shop first for the promised chocolate. I also pick up some Scottish food for Jamie. For Paul and Tianna, I get some Winchester sauce. It is the closest I can get to the garman sauce of their time. Next, I head to the drug to pick up a couple of brushes. I also pick up shampoo and toothbrushes and paste. As well as the medical supplies. Now for the clothes.

Master Raymond.

I can tell he is nervous.

"I have never done this. Picked out clothes for women. I need simple, period appropriate, and comfortable, considering." He explains. We head to Top Shop.

"Ask the cashiers for help. It will be okay." He nods but is still nevous as he walks in.

Merlin

"May I help you?" She asks.

"Ahhh, yes. I need clothes for two women and really have no idea." She gives me a strange look but leads me to women's wear.

"You should find what you need here. Call out if you need more assistance."

"Thank you." Comfortable. And easy. I knew as soon as I seen them. Track suits in many colors. I picked up two. One pink with roses on it. The other plain pink. Well, it was good enough for the ladies. I pick out two more for the men. One blue and green. One red and blue. I paid for them and walked out with relief. That is done.

Master Raymond

"There is one other thing we need to try to do." He tells me as I drive.

"Yes?" I look at him curiously.

"Try to buy or, at least rent, Lallybroch."

"Lallybroch? Why?"

"It is where Jamie has been trying to get back to. He hasn't been there in four years. It won't be the same.."

"But is home. I see. I will do my best. It is near sunset. Let's get you back to them."

"Yes. Thank you as always. I should see you again soon."

"Yes. With my daughter and the others." We hug tight and I watch him and what we have gathered disappear through the vale of time.

2018 was a wild ride for me. I had to move twice - willingly at first and then because our house was being sold from under us. I was in a car accident that completely totaled my car, leaving me stranded for two weeks until we could get approved for a new car. My best friend who I met through Tumblr over five years ago came to visit me for the first time ever. And I got married! 1. A Darker Shade of Magic (V.E. Schwab) goodreads | amazon | book depository

I put off reading this series for a while but finally bought all three of them at once and I am so glad that I did. I absolutely adored Kell and Delilah and reading of their journey together. If you’re a fan of magic and fantasy, this series is perfect for you!

I actually won a copy of this from a Goodreads giveaway (only the second I’ve ever won over the years I’ve had an account)! And it was only shortly after having added it to my wishlist. Such an interesting story and beautiful writing. I’m not entirely sure why I haven’t picked up the rest of the series yet. Hopefully I’ll get to them soon!

5. The Girls at 17 Swann Street (Yara Zgheib) goodreads | amazon | book depository

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I don’t know what I was expecting but it definitely wasn’t such beautiful writing, a heartbreaking story and great characters. It was truly wonderful to read. I highly recommend it to anyone just for the insight into eating disorders.

6. Labyrinth Lost (Zoraida Córdova) goodreads | amazon | book depository

In all honesty, my expectations for Labyrinth Lost were too high going in. I was left with a book that turned out much differently than I thought it was going to and feeling a little bit put off. I enjoyed the writing and the characters and hope that one day revisiting it will fuel my desire to continue the series.

7. Since You’ve Been Gone (Morgan Matson) goodreads | amazon | book depository

This book was sososo good! I thought it was going to be a quick, cute read that I liked but didn’t love. But I got so much more from it. It was funny and sad and I truly enjoyed reading it. I even cried a little at the end (ask my husband, he was there)! I highly recommend it.

8. War of Storms (Erica Cameron) goodreads | amazon | book depository

I was given the opportunity to read this trilogy by the author and publisher. I was so excited when I was contacted to read War of Storms. This series is so unique, diverse and interesting. It so easily kept me captivated. It’s definitely worth a read!

9. The Witch Doesn't Burn In This One (Amanda Lovelace) goodreads | amazon | book depository

Amanda Lovelace is magical. Is there really anything else to say? I loved this one as much as her first and I can’t wait to get my hands on the rest of her work. She’s a wonderful writer and I aspire to be as great as her.

10. Sex, Not Love (Vi Keeland) goodreads | amazon | book depository

I had to throw one of the many romance novels I read into my top ten. This one was hilarious, steamy and wonderful.

2019 Goals

For 2019, I’d like to read 40 books. I want to aim for more but I don’t want to cause unneeded stress because of a number. Maybe next year! Aside from that, I’d like to read more poetry and less romance novels. I think I say that every year though and always end up right back to my smutty ways. Oh well, no regrets.

Does anyone know the correct map update software I need?

I have a G510 I bought about 1.5 years ago and I would like to update the maps. I found the 'SD data card, City Navigator NT, North America Part Number: 010-10679-00' on the Garman website but it doesn't specifically say this item is for upgrading the map software on the G510. I also read in another place on the web that this software couldn't be used to update existing software.

Amazon to roll out tools to monitor factory workers and machines

Amazon is rolling out cheap new tools that will allow factories everywhere to monitor their workers and machines, as the tech giant looks to boost its presence in the industrial sector.

Launched by Amazon’s cloud arm AWS, the new machine learning-based services include hardware to monitor the health of heavy machinery, and computer vision capable of detecting whether workers are complying with social distancing.

Amazon said it had created a two-inch, low-cost sensor—Monitron—that can be attached to equipment to monitor abnormal vibrations or temperatures and predict future faults.

AWS Panorama, meanwhile, is a service that uses computer vision to analyze footage gathered by cameras within facilities, automatically detecting safety and compliance issues such as workers not wearing PPE or vehicles being driven in unauthorized areas.

“But the same technology can be used to ensure worker safety

The new services, announced on Tuesday during the company’s annual cloud computing conference, represent a step up in the tech giant’s efforts to gather and crunch real-world data in areas it currently feels are underserved.

“If you look at manufacturing and industrial generally, it’s a space that has seen some innovations, but there's a lot of pieces that haven't been digitized and modernized,” said Matt Garman, AWS’s head of sales and marketing, speaking to the FT.

“There's a ton of data in a factory, or manufacturing facility, or a supply chain. It's just locked up in sensors, locked up in machines that a lot of companies could get a lot of value from.”

Amazon said it had installed 1,000 Monitron sensors at its fulfilment centres near the German city of Mönchengladbach, where they are used to monitor conveyor belts handling packages.

If successful, said analyst Brent Thill from Jefferies, the move would help Amazon cement its position as the dominant player in cloud computing, in the face of growing competition from Microsoft’s Azure and Google Cloud, and a prolonged run of slowed segment growth.

“This idea of predictive analytics can go beyond a factory floor,” Mr. Thill said. “It can go into a car, on to a bridge, or on to an oil rig. It can cross fertilize a lot of different industries.”

A number of companies are already trialling AWS Panorama. Siemens Mobility said it would use the tech to monitor traffic flow in cities, though would not specify which. Deloitte said it was working with a major North America seaport to use the tool to monitor the movement of shipments.

However Amazon’s own use of tools to monitor the productivity of employees has raised concerns among critics. Throughout the pandemic, the company has used computer vision to ensure employee compliance with social distancing guidelines.

Swami Sivasubramanian, AWS’s head of machine learning and AI, said none of the services announced would include “pre-packaged” facial recognition capabilities, and said AWS would block clients who abused its terms of service on data privacy and surveillance.

“When you look at this technology, sometimes it’s very easy for us to get worried about how they can be abused,” he told the FT.

“But the same technology can be used to ensure worker safety. Are people walking in spaces where they shouldn’t be? Is there an oil spill? Are they not wearing hard hats? These are real-world problems.”

The visual Arts in the United States mostly explore the traditional concepts of the " American way of life" and the "American dream" which can be recognized in abstract arts and get to be explored not only in USA but also around the world due to its influence. Making a connection between the 2010'’s and the 60'’s the exhibition " America, America: How real is real"in the Frieder Buda museum, located at the Garman city of Baden Baden in 2018. The pieces brought together were made by contemporary artists such as: Roy Lichtenstein, Eric Fischl and CIndy Sherman. The exhibition also had photography in silkscreen made by Andy Warhol depicting car accidents, electric chairs and criminals, contrasting with the center of another pieces that are centered around the glorified by the media and Hollywood, American Dream. There was also critique to capitalism and consumerism behaviour, rising in the pop art movement.

"The Imaginary flag for USA" by William N. Copley (1972) - holding a highly symbolic place between americans, the surrealist artist recreated the striped flag replacing the 50 starts with the word THINK. A response to patriotism in America towards the end of the Vietnam War.

Media images continue to influence the arts on the work of contemporary American artists. Perceptions of reality and how media is prone to manipulation, Robert Longo for example is talking about the need of the media industry to be noticeable 24 hours a day.

In 2018, when actor-comedian Donald Glover released the music video for Childish Gambino's "This Is America", which quickly went viral. Alongside Hiro Murai, also director for "Atlanta" a comedy-drama created by and starring Glover who plays Earn, a man trying to find himself as he manages his cousin's rap career. The show focuses on black life in America, but also embraces comedy: Earn wears whiteface in a episode to play the wealthy Teddy Perkins, the episode leaning towards humour and racial symbolism that also powered Jordan Peele's "Get Out" (2017).

In "This is America" they created a disturbing four-minute long that spoke about the troubling racial climate in America with beautiful and raw shots: as Glover moves through the video violent scenes start to erupt, he executes the witnesses of his performance, as he dances with gestures and choreography referencing Jim Crow and viral internet dances. It is not the first time Donald Glover's work gained attention because of its symbolism and need for dissection from his fans, the music video for "Feels like Summer" went viral for representing famous black artists as members of a neighbourhood living together and while the internet focusing mostly on the stars, the lyrics of the song were a very clear critique involving climate change and consumerism, which seems to be a recurrent theme on American artists work.

8 Startling Signs You Have Too Much Debt (And More Credit Isn’t Always the Solution)

Do you worry about money all day every day? Is debt impacting not only your financial health, but your mental health too? If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. In a recent Self Lender poll, nearly 20% of people between the ages of 18-34 said they worry all day every day about money, and with good reason. In a study by Northwestern Mutual, the average American has about $38,000 in personal debt, not including debt from their mortgages. Of this debt, 25% is from credit card debt. I guess you could say this country has a bit of a debt problem.

Source In many cases, these debts prevent you from focusing on building wealth for the future, since debt essentially means paying off the past. “Debt is your financial past. Your past is paying for student loans, vehicle purchases, medical bills and credit cards. These debts prevent you from securing a financial future. People often struggle most of their lives paying debts of the past. The more quickly you eliminate your old past debts, the sooner you can plan and take care of your future,” Jennifer H. Plantier of Hardin-Simmons University writes in the book "Personal Finance" by Thomas Garman and Raymond Forgue. While some people are almost too aware (painfully aware) of how much debt they have, many people could be struggling with debt without even realizing it. How do you know if you have too much debt? Here are some ways to tell if you have too much debt, why getting more credit might not be the right solution, and some ideas that could help you break the debt cycle.

Signs you have too much debt

1 - You have no idea how much money you owe If you have no idea how much money you owe on your debts (or are too scared to find out), you could have too much debt. Sort of like ripping off a Band Aid®, taking a clear look at how much you owe can sting at first. But the first step towards budgeting and getting your finances back on track is to know how much money you’re spending. “The most important aspect of keeping your money is being aware of how much of it you’re spending,” Tiffany Aliche, the Budgetnista, says. The next step? To know how much money you are making so you can see how your current spending fits in, or what adjustments you need to make to it. It takes courage to confront your own financial habits, so be brave! Sit down and add up the totals you owe on debts, including: Mortgage paymentsPayments on personal loans, such as car loans Credit card debtStudent loan debt Any other items you financed – like an appliance or jewelry purchase, just to name a few Knowing what you owe can help you get a better handle on your debt and understand how to more effectively manage your cash flow. 2 - You keep getting new credit cards to pay off old credit cards Sometimes, transferring credit card debt to a 0% introductory offer card makes sense. If all you need is a temporary break in interest to make your monthly payments on time or pay down more debt, then adding another credit card could be the right choice. Just be aware of any balance transfer fees prior to going this route. However, if all you’re doing is trying to get access to more and more spending, without paying anything down, then you could just be adding more debt to an already dire financial situation. Not to mention, you could damage your credit in the process by keeping your total credit usage high. This high credit usage could cost you more when it comes to gaining access to other credit products. 3 - You ask for credit limit increases to put more on your card, not to improve your credit Sometimes, asking your credit card companies for a credit limit increase can be a positive thing when it comes to improving your credit score. After all, keeping your credit limits high, and your credit usage low, are positive indicators that you manage credit responsibly. But, if you raise your credit limit to spend more money you know or don’t realize you can’t pay, then you probably have too much debt. 4 - You treat credit cards like additional income and live outside your means Dave Ramsey famously promotes the idea of “acting your wage,” which really just means living within your means and not trying to “keep up with the Joneses” if you can’t afford to. While Ramsey’s attitudes towards credit and debt don’t necessarily work for everyone, this is a good rule to follow when it comes to using your credit card. Using a credit card to increase your income so you can buy non-emergency items is a big no-no. Whenever possible, treat your credit card like a debit card by only putting purchases on it you know you can pay off, in full, at the end of the month, based on your current income. 5 - You make late payments, skip payments, or only pay the minimum due Skipping payments or paying late can get expensive in a hurry, thanks to late fees. And the term “minimum amount due” can be a little misleading. While yes, technically it’s the minimum amount you have to pay so a payment doesn’t report to the credit bureaus as late or missed, if you want to avoid interest charges, making minimum payments on your credit card debt isn’t the best choice. By only paying the minimum amount, you can end up paying mostly interest on the debt (not paying the debt down) while more interest continues to add up. If you have extra money one month, or receive a bonus or raise, consider putting that money towards your credit card payments. To illustrate this, here’s how much interest you would accrue on a $6,081 debt with a 14.99% interest rate if you pay the minimum payment, double the minimum payment, or the minimum payment plus $100 each month.

You can see here that, if you only pay the minimum amount due, over time you’ve just added over $4,000 worth of interest to a roughly $6,000 debt. And that’s at a 14.99% interest rate. If you have a higher interest rate on your credit card, the amount you pay in interest could easily surpass the original cost of the purchase. To avoid turning credit card debt into even more debt, try to pay your credit card bills on time and in full whenever possible. Or at least pay more than the minimum amount due. 6 - You consistently use 30% or more of your total available credit Hey, I get it. Emergencies happen, right? You can’t always control how much you have to put on your credit card. However, if you consistently charge non-emergency purchases that you can’t afford to your credit card and that’s what keeps your credit usage high, you might want to reconsider your spending habits. Since how much of the available credit you use adds up to 30% of your FICO credit score, it is generally recommended that you keep the amount of credit you use to under 30% of your total available credit limit. The amount of credit you use compared to the total credit available to you is also known as a credit utilization ratio. Here’s a simple example of what that could look like.

Keep in mind, this rule applies both to your use of credit on a single credit card, and across your credit cards as a whole. Bonus tip: To help plan for emergencies without relying too heavily on your credit card, try to set up an emergency fund, which is a savings account used only for emergencies. Ideally, this fund would cover 3-6 months of living expenses, but every little bit set aside can help. 7 - Your debt-to-income ratio is too high What exactly is your Debt-to-Income (DTI) ratio? As the name suggests, it looks at how much debt you have compared to how much money you make. The higher the ratio, the higher the risk (generally speaking) to the lender that you won’t pay back what you owe. You find this ratio by adding up all of your monthly debt payments and dividing it by your gross income (your income pre-tax). This ratio helps lenders measure your ability to repay what you borrow and manage your monthly payments. According to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), a 43% DTI ratio is usually the highest ratio a borrower can have and still get a qualified mortgage. So if you’re planning to buy a house in the next few years, try to reduce your debt below this line first. In addition to impacting lending decisions, your DTI ratio can also be a helpful tool for you to better understand your current financial situation. Here’s how to calculate it for yourself if you’re curious, using an example from the CFPB… Calculating your Debt-to-Income ratio Monthly debts: $1,500 monthly mortgage payment$100 monthly car payment$400 additional monthly debt payments Now, just add these up (1,500+100+400) to get your total monthly debt payments, which in this case add up to $2,000. The next step is to divide your total monthly debt payments ($2,000) by your total monthly income (before taxes and other deductions), then multiply it by 100 to get a percentage. For this example, let’s say that your pre-tax monthly income is $6,000. Total monthly debt payments ($2,000) ÷ Pre-tax monthly income ($6,000) x 100 = 33%. Sound too complicated? Here’s a friendly little calculator that could make figuring out your DTI ratio easier. 8 - You experience repossession, foreclosure or wage garnishment If you have secured debt that uses a piece of property (like a home or car) to secure your loan, you could face losing that property if you are not able to pay off debt as agreed. If your car is repossessed or your home foreclosed due to missing payments or otherwise failing to pay your auto loan or mortgage as agreed, you definitely have too much debt. Wage garnishment, which is a court order that money (usually wages paid by an employer) be seized to satisfy a debt, is another red flag for debt. Again, while sometimes these consequences reflect a problem of living outside your means, sometimes these are the results of an emergency that causes you to default on loan or other payments. If you can, try to talk to your lender before missing payments or facing these losses, or consider bankruptcy after talking with a financial counselor or legal professional who could help you decide if this is the right option for you. If you find yourself stuck and need help with debt management or debt repayment, consider a debt management plan from a nonprofit organization, or seeking help from a certified credit counselor.

Bottom line – when more credit might not be the answer

Having too much debt can feel crippling at times (believe me, I’ve been there). Aside from the impacts to your financial, mental and physical health, too much debt can also damage your credit score, which is quite a hot topic in today’s personal finance space. However, it’s important to remember that your credit score isn’t the end-all-be-all. Sure, it’s important. Sure, having better credit could save you thousands of dollars over the course of a lifetime. But if you’re drowning in debt, focus on paying that down first, and your credit will usually improve as a result. While it can be tempting to turn to scams that promise to eliminate your debt or improve your credit quickly, remember that, when it comes to the race between the tortoise and the hare, sometimes the steady pace is the best. This is especially true when it comes to credit. So if you find yourself drowning in debt, try to focus on first getting yourself to a better place financially, then paying down as much debt as you can. Focus on your long-term financial health. Brazilian President acquitted in illegal campaign funds case

Rio de Janeiro (CNN)Brazil's top electoral court voted to acquit President Michel Temer and former President Dilma Rousseff following an investigation of allegations they received illegal campaign funds in the 2014 elections.

The 4-3 decision gives Temer some breathing room, but he still faces a corruption investigation and street protests that threaten to force him from office before the next presidential elections in October 2018.

Temer, 76, was the vice-presidential candidate alongside Rousseff in 2014, but Rousseff was impeached last year for illegal fiscal maneuvers aimed at hiding the budget shortfall. She has denied the allegations.

The prospect of a second Brazilian president being forced out of office in less than a year has unsettled markets and investors.

The Brazilian economy has started to crawl out of the worst recession on record, thanks in part to Temer's efforts to push unpopular austerity measures through Congress.

But with the corruption investigation heating up, it is not clear he will have the political backing to get key pension and other measures approved.

"Pension reform is certainly at risk, and as Temer continues to struggle for his survival in coming months some items on the agenda may be slowed," Christopher Garman of the Eurasia Group consultancy wrote in a report.

Nonetheless, he said other reforms would likely move forward.

The latest scandal broke last month. A secret recording surfaced on which Temer and Joesley Batista, the president of a multinational food processing company named JBS, can be heard talking about paying bribes.

In a plea deal, Batista said Temer condoned the payment of hush money to silence a jailed legislator. Temer has denied the allegations and says the recording was doctored.

But the scandal -- just the latest development in the long-running "Operation Car Wash" corruption investigation that has implicated dozens of politicians from across the political spectrum -- prompted new street protests.

Temer's approval rating is in the single digits and the Supreme Court has opened an investigation into alleged corruption and obstruction of justice.

If Temer is ousted, power is handed to Congress, which will have up to 30 days to choose a caretaker president until new elections.

In the meantime, the Car Wash investigation has already engulfed the major political players and business leaders -- leaving the electoral field wide open.
