Hong Sang-soo’s Films

Mulanya saya ingin eksplor film-film dari Ryusuke Hamaguchi, tapi deretan filmografi Hong Sang-soo lebih banyak dan durasi tiap film lebih singkat sehingga saya mengulik karya sineas Korea Selatan ini terlebih dahulu. Berikut film Hong Sang-soo yang sudah saya tonton:

Nobody’s Daughter Haewon

Waktu itu saya yakin memilih “Nobody’s Daughter Haewon” sebagai pengalaman pertama saya di ‘dunia’ Hong Sang-soo karena inilah satu-satunya film beliau dengan Lee Sun-kyun sebagai pemeran utama (Seong-joon) yang tayang di layanan streaming legal. Dari sana saya lumayan banyak observasi seperti bagaimana mundanity yang tersaji baik dari segi cerita maupun visual (tidak lupa dengan teknik zoom in). Sebenarnya cerita perselingkuhan sama sekali bukan favorit saya tapi untuk film ini saya lanjut tonton sampai selesai karena latar belakang hidup Haewon juga tersampaikan dengan jelas. Dialog yang ada sangat dinamis, tapi kehidupan nyata kita memang penuh juga dengan dialog yang tidak terduga, bukan? Hong Sang-soo berhasil membingkai realita itu. Satu hal lagi yang menarik adalah ada ambiguitas di dalamnya, yaitu soal mana yang nyata dan mana yang hanya hidup di mimpi Haewon.

Introduction

Saya tidak begitu ingat detail ceritanya, hanya ingat plot utama berupa cerita pendewasaan seorang laki-laki yang bertemu dengan orangtua, pasangan, dan seorang artis, dikemas dalam tiga babak. Sinematografi dan kegiatan sehari-hari yang ada di sana sesuai dengan ciri khas karya Hong Sang-soo, namun ini versi hitam putih. Sebenarnya film-film beliau yang lain juga ada yang hitam putih tapi belum saya tonton. Di antara empat film yang saya sebut di sini, bisa dibilang “Introduction” yang paling tidak menarik, tapi ini jelas subjektif.

The Woman Who Ran

“The Woman Who Ran” adalah satu dari beberapa film Hong Sang-soo yang pemeran utamanya adalah Kim Min-hee. Saya tertarik hanya karena poster film ini sering lewat di linimasa Twitter:

Perempuan yang pergi ke tiga orang teman memang mirip seperti tiga babak “Introduction”, tapi benang merah antara pertemuan-pertemuan itu jauh lebih kuat. Film ini penuh oleh repetisi sehingga penonton bisa benar-benar paham mengapa Gamhee (karakter utama) ‘lari’ ke teman-temannya, bagaimana cerita romansa mereka, dan selalu ada dialog yang tidak mengenakkan dari laki-laki. Jangan salah tangkap karena dari sekian masalah yang ada, film ini tetap membuat penonton nyaman, benar-benar seperti kita semua yang bertamu ke teman dan mendengar kabarnya. Semua itu dikemas dengan sinematografi yang lebih baik, tapi mungkin memang karena film ini tergolong baru (2020).

Hill of Freedom

Semua ulasan ini beserta tiga film di atas saya tulis sehari setelah menonton “Hill of Freedom”. Ketika menontonnya saya sudah merasa tidak perlu banyak observasi lagi karena terasa familiar dengan karya Hong Sang-soo— kehidupan sehari-hari yang sederhana, cerita romansa namun melibatkan orang lain (baik sebagai pasangan selingkuh atau sekadar teman-teman), melekat dengan dua negara yang berbeda seperti “Introduction” dan “Night and Day”, dan tentu saja zoom in. Tapi saya sedikit kaget ketika mulai menyadari film ini mengandung lebih banyak dialog bahasa Inggris daripada Korea, tidak sesingkat di “Nobody’s Daughter Haewon”. Kali ini alurnya tidak berbabak sehingga lebih mudah diikuti. Tapi dengan film yang semestinya bisa sangat bagus di genre serupa, saya punya kritik terhadap karakter utama. Karakter Mori benar-benar kaku, dan ini bukan hanya karena kemampuan bicara dalam bahasa Inggrisnya tidak fasih tapi memang ekspresi yang harusnya ada (dan dinamis) di semua scenes tidak sampai sama sekali ke mata penonton. Awalnya saya pikir dua hal itu memang disengaja mengingat Mori berasal dari Jepang dan mungkin karakter itu memang dibuat datar, tapi pada akhirnya tetap saya kritik karena semua itu justru melemahkan film ini. Bahkan aktris Youn Yuh-jung yang hanya tampil sebagai pemeran pendukung bisa bicara dengan sedikit lebih fasih dan ekspresinya jelas. Tidak heran Youn Yuh-jung bisa menang Oscar atas film “Minari”.

So far I haven't really been able to get warm with Hong Sang-soo's films. But I found these three episodes a very worthwhile watch.

It's mostly just conversations, but it's still about strong female characters and their friendships. With the amusing highlight being, every time a man briefly appears on the scene, he's only shown from behind.

The performances of the women feel very natural, not like acting.

the woman who ran

baru pertama nonton film hong sang-soo, judulnya the woman who ran. ceritanya tentang seorang wanita yang baru pertama kali dalam 5 tahun hidup berpisah dengan suaminya. nggak cerai ya, cuma si suami lagi ada dinas ke luar kota.

seperti aku kalau lagi pisah sama istri, mungkin gamhee bingung gimana menghabiskan waktu tanpa partnernya, jadi ia pergi menemui 3 temannya, young-soon, su-young, dan woo-jin.

percakapannya sederhana banget sih, cuman soal makanan dan lingkungan tempat temannya tinggal. ditengah percakapan-percakapan tersebut selalu muncul seorang lelaki sebagai “bumbu” cerita.

di rumah teman young-soon, lelaki yang muncul minta tolong agar nggak ngasih makan kucing, karena istrinya takut kucing. sedangkan di rumah su-young agak sedikit ekstrim kasusnya. si cowok pernah tidur dengan su-young saat mereka mabuk dan ia terhitung sangat muda bagi su-young yang mungkin sudah memasuki usia sekitar 40 tahunan.

pertemuan terakhir teras sedikit awkward, karena bersinggungan dengan kisah cinta gamhee.

keunikan film ini tentu saja ada pada gayanya. kalau suka trilogi before sunrise, mungkin juga akan suka the woman who ran. selain itu, setiap laki-laki yang ada di film ini selalu di shot dari belakang saat berbicara.
