One of the terrible things about a new Special Interest™ is inevitably running into Bad Takes, and I think I'm going to have to break this into chunks, since the last time I did longform writing I was also dealing with a stomach flu, so I was more incoherent than usual.
I watched a Youtube video, and I'm not about to become the kind of person who writes in comment sections. The two most egregious failings were that Chisato didn't get development and he took Majima seriously (That's going to have to be it's own post, so I don't go apeshit over the "Indirect kiss" interpretation.)
I don't have a big gripe, there was some good information (I hadn't heard the "unfilmable" version ended with them drowning the bad guys in a pool of blood, which while METAL isn't going to get a Sanrio crossover like the broadcast version.) The guy has the other brand of brainworms, but some of my most cherished screencaps are from 4chan Toonami liveblogs where anons are talking about loving LycoReco, so insert that "I love this thing"/"Worst guy you ever met " cartoon I usually reserve for gunpla discussions.
I think part of it is not getting "Takina as transfer student" which I got after watching PMMM (Yes, I watched it due to the Homura/Takina post, but that's a photoset in drafts). Chisato is an established character, and we're introduced to her legend and lore (heck we only hear about her dog from a picture) while we're introduced with Takina and see her evolve, in comparison, we unlock Chisato lore, but we see her change in response to Takina .
We're introduced to her having already rejecting assassination for pacifism, having literally built a Coffeeshop AU for herself, and already having accepted her own death (like an actual Stoic) and dedicating herself to being remembered fondly by people she's helped. In a way, we see parts of this in flashback, but it's still there for sequels and Gaiden stories. If we see Chisato go to living her own life AND Takina taking back her agency from DA the story feels used up.
Which isn't to say by not having an "arc" Chisato doesn't change. We see her close the Coffee shop once she gets an actual estimate of how long she's got to live, which again I see people confused by. Given how much we see Chisato lied to, even with her best interests, like Mika's heartwrenching confession scene, she likely hasn't been given an actual life expectancy. It was genuinely horrifying to learn the Lycoris service lasts until 18 from Mika and Yoshi's conversation that that was when her heart would probably give out, and then find out she's 17 during the series. (Which makes Yoshi's plan of attack take place when he knows all the more disgusting).
But she realizes she doesn't have much time left she stops playing a waitress to get her affairs in order, like her "dying wish" to get Takina reinstated in DA she's taken care of (as much as DA can care). Likewise, she violates her code against killing twice, using live conventional ammo to save Takina, and again to throw herself and Majima off the tower while she's disabled and he threatens Takina.
Admittedly, I feel like I'm rehashing my gripe about the RLM Predator video where I complain a lot of people haven't been in a deadly situation, so seeing a depiction of someone in those situations doesn't read right to them, but I've engaged in the least American of Pastimes, contemplating my own mortality and deciding whether my sense of morality is worth my own life or someone else's. So I feel like it's a mug's game to say character development only occurs in an arc just as much as the people who see everything in TV Tropes lists.

Happy New Year everybody! Hope you had a wonderful celebration :D
Since it's the start of a new year I wanted to tell you about some updates and future plans and creative projects of mine.
First things first:
I'm preparing to open a Redbubble shop!
It's partially as a joke and partially so that I can share my designs around, particularly the Team Grima and Team Sombron ones I had in mind for a while. (and by god I'm gonna take the opportunity to make Echoes fan merch since it's sorely missing)
I do need to make five designs to open a shop and I want to do them right, but as soon it's ready I'm gonna post the link.
When that day comes, feel free to just look around or buy something if you really wanna give me money that badly.
If you don't, you can always come over at my art blog @fayessketchbook and tell me you like my art. It's free and I will love you forever.
I want to play more Fire Emblem, be the games I still haven't played, ROM hacks or emblemlikes. And I want to stream them if I can!
I made a Twitch channel last year but I barely ever streamed last year, just played a little of Gaiden. But since I want to play more of Fire Emblem, it would be fun sharing it with you!
I have no intention of becoming a Twitch streamer for now (mainly because it sounds like a pain and I really don't care enough to learn how everything works, also I'm a socially anxious introvert), but playing chill FE from time to time together does sound fun.
No schedules or anything, just a couple of hours whenever I have nothing else to do in the evening.
As for which games I want to play, well I am absolutely gonna stream all of Sacred Echoes ( :D), but other than that we'll see.
Probably Walk with the Living, if only because I feel really bad for the anon who recommended it to me since I never got around to actually playing it.
I am still without a Switch and a job, so the Three Houses liveblog is still very much on hold for the time being.
While I do find the project daunting and more ambitious than I can probably handle (since it's very much intended to be both a blind playthrough and a critical deep dive), I do hope I can start it this year, if only to test the water and because I think it would be a really cool long-term project.
(also, regarding the above point: even if I get a Switch and a capture card, I will not stream Three Houses until I've completed all the routes to avoid jackasses coming in chat to spoil me or start shit about the house leaders for the upteenth time thus spoiling me. I somehow managed to stay almost spoiler-free through all these years and I want to keep it that way.)
I want to write more and finish at least one of my WiPs. I don't know if I actually will.
Oh also, a friend gifted me a PS1, which means among other things that I can play TearRing Saga on legitimate hardware, so that's pretty cool!
Anyways, that's it for now.
If I forgot something I'll edit the post or reblog it, otherwise I don't think I'll make any huge blog updates until my blog anniversary next month.

oh no clive is getting inspired by cid's ideals and believing in them. cid is so dead! one he has no more narrative worth and nothing more to teach clive its game over for him.
xvi is pulling a fe gaiden learn to live without the gods. learn to use agriculture to grow your own food. clive you fool you should absolutely be asking for more concrete proof and then look to get it independently verified that the mothercrystals are destroying the world before just taking someone's word.
ffxvi is really good at making sidequests that i don't want to do.
if moore and sabreque hate masterless branded so much than that arrangement with jill would have worked better than clive running around on his own.
i does bear saying that bearers in sabreque and rosaria at least, are slaves. to the bought, sold, and commanded as their masters see fit. like in rosaria any masterless bearer's ownership defaulted to the state.
there's something to be said about how... clique-y? or maybe just xenophobic everyone is. clive is soooo lucky that he's got friends of friends of friends who all want to help him and let him into the network. he's out here collecting pokemon badges and those badges really do make the difference between night and day. clive would have gotten no where without cid and his network or network of favors. part of it in probably everyone hates bearers but im starting to think most people hate outsiders in general. local politics (the tokens) are more powerful than bigotry against bearers,
wandering around sabreque, keeping the imperial armor could have come in handy.
"The way I understood it is that magic requires the user to draw upon ambient aether, either through a crystal or innately (Bearers/Dominants). Since the Deadlands are bereft of aether, there’s nothing to draw upon = no magic." (StickyBarb). Hmm that would mean all Dominants are Bearers, they simply aren't branded as such because Bearer is a political/class term and Dominants are too useful. Still doesn't quite explain Clive since no one knew he was Ifrit's Dominant.
why do i get the feeling this whole destroy the mothercrystal terrorist act is going to go poorly. wait that white on cid's arm is he turning to stone.
aetherflood/poisoning might not harm you dominants but what about torgal? more fuel to the magic dog fire i guess.
just like the ancient technology the only thing that can destroy the mother crystal is eikon power. the fallen, the mural at the phoenix gate sanctum apoca....thy??, the eikons, the wraiths, the mothercrystals, the game is telling us that it is all connected.
i was just thinking its rare that videogames have something beautiful be bad and that could be an interesting take. but also what if cid got it all wrong. what if the mothercrystals were channeling aether to seal something much worse and we just broke that seal. maybe whoever is trapped is trying to use clive. speculation on my part but theory crafting is half the fun
ok evil ancient civilization got sealed away by the mothercrystals and is trying to posses clive to get out. typhon fight was pretty cool best typhon yet.
how convenient that clive in unconscious when joshua shows up. joshua seriously on some main character quest to save the world. goes and seals the big bad evil inside himself. goddam. i'd say a normal person would get crushed by rubble but none of the other stuff killed him so who knows.
hmm i think you guys might have caused the collapse of a nation. with sabreque weakened dhalmek or woelod are just going to invade and i'll be more of the same. that plan of your only work if you destroy all of the mothercrystals in tandem thus maintaining the balance of power and political stability. when a regime collapse, even a corrupt bad one things usually get worse as local warlords and gangs move in. well actually dhalmek is a republic not a theocracy so at least there's that.

doing timeskips is fine but you have to make them count and so far im not convinced of either of the timeskips. it doesn't feel 13 years and it doesn't feel 5 years. i could have easily been 8 years and 2 years and would have been just as believable.
oh right sabreque took the crystal dominion. dhalmek's not going to be happy about that.
deus ex fortune 500 uncle. clive its rather rude to not visit your uncle for 18 years or at least let him know that you are alive and only show up when you need a favor. very rude.
mark of the guardians. sounds like a great way for the cops to identify you. wade is right though, old soldiers, its been 18 years. any of the original shields are at least in their 40s.
what annoys me is that even before the timeskip all the villagers were talking about how the imperials were coming after the bearers, all while hideout was talking about needing people. and well titan crushed the place but now its the exact same thing. there's a place for them to go so why doesn't clive talk with wade about getting these people out of rosaria.

yeah its real fucking weird that jill didn't try and rescue these women she'd spent 13 years protecting. writer! why would you do this to her character. when introduced as shiva she reminded me of those bulls bounds in irons so strong that they no longer needed the physical ones. shiva could have killed the leadership at any time, she couldn't have killed all of them but she could have taken out a lot and she didn't because other's would have paid for her actions. that's her establishing character moment. but then the writers didn't do anything with that for 6 years.
what did joshua do? he raised his hand the lava went crazy and then a fire thing showed up to fight. wait no joshua took off the brown cloak, who was that.
oh he's still alive. go girl! go! kill him! kill him dead! woooooo!
mhmm the mothercrystals are definitely seals on ultima and for every one clive and jill break, a greater burden in placed on joshua who is using his body as a seal.
20 years and Anabella looks exactly the same. I'm surprised that son isn't older, like he looks 10. you're telling me Anabella didn't immediately jump the emperor but waited 9 years. I heard speculation at the beginning that Anabella isn't actually Clive's biological mother (well she's not an actual mother either) or that there's some sort of hereditary drama with the Rosfields given how much Clive doesn't look like Anabella and how much Joshua doesn't look like Elwin, and also how young Anabella looked when Clive was 15 but that could also just be the jrpg thing you can never tell. … did old man Elwin Rosfield have Clive out of wedlock? would help explain why Anabella hated him so much, why she says his bloodline in filthy, and why she said something along the lines of that he's the son of a whore.
oh right jill is from the north lands essentially taken as a political hostage so that her family and the other northerners don't attack rosaria. weird how this isn't addressed either. like you'd expect her to idk have opinions or something on the people that ripped her away from her family even if the archduke treated her well.
vivian where were at the beginning of the game
kupo? hugo! invasion of rosalith, is this the first time clive has been back to his hometown?
and of course jill has to play damsel. she coudl have fought harder than that. blow them up.

i might be slow on this but maybe clive can't summon ifrit because joshua sealed ultima and ifrit is tied to ultima. but clive also still has ifrit's combat abilities which is why i forgot he couldn't summon ifrit because he only couldn't use that power in cutscenes.
mythos. clive's head voice/ultima/hooded man also called him that. and i think that was the man from the opening round table. one of ... waloed's. a normal man would die of bloodloss from having his hands cut off but hugo is a dominant, but i dont think he's getting those back.
in and out eh i guess we wont be having any revolutionary or nationalist sentiments today.

finally starting gaiden. i wanna liveblog it on any big thoughts i have so i'll make a gameplay tag. obvs i'll spoiler tag shit when i get to it but first impressions:
i like the approach theyve taken to the intro of games since judgement, the mini music video thing makes watching the opening credits really entertaining. i'm still warming back up to the idea of having kiryu as a protag again, the lore theyve laid down so far is interesting but my tolerance for stupid shit is low atm. we will see

Tsukuyo gets but a glimpse of Iroha standing 20 meters apart from her and she IMMEDIATELY RECOGNIZES HER.
I don’t remember if Tsukyo ever saw Iroha in her “civilian” but there’s the thing: I’m so used to thinking that magical girls have the secret identity that must be protected at all costs. However, in megucaworld, I don’t think I have seen it being any kind of an issue, it’s rarely even addressed. They don’t have magical girl “titles” either, they work with their own names and own faces so to say. There is no civilian and secret identities. It’s a worldbuilding choice and it’s interesting!

i got my friends to watch cpuk too and one of them was liveblogging the doctor order gaiden to me and aaAAAA GOD. i love the larry v order grudge match SO MUCH. one of my fav scenes. also it's fun drawing larry shapeshifted into other fighters bc i try to keep Some things consistent
...and then i wanted to keep drawing so. headcanons about what larry looks like under the mask! i got the idea that the mask & fancy coat are specifically for when he's planning to fight and he has a more casual outfit for when he's just vibing. and also that he wears mascara (and that's one of the things that sticks when he transforms).
i really need to figure out how to draw j0hn.

Dragon Ball Apocrypha
I liveblogged Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z in 2019. Near the end, a few people asked if I was going to do GT or Super and I said no, mainly because I wanted to finish in one year, but also because I don’t consider those series to be part of the true DBZ canon. Also, I tend to think of the other stuff to be small and insignificant.
Except, there’s a lot more of it now than there used to be. It occurred to me one day that if I did cover all the other stuff, it would probably take me as long as it did to cover DB & DBZ. But I never sat down and added it all up, so tonight I think I’ll just do that now.
Let me be clear: I’m not planning to liveblog any of this stuff. I may do it sometime in the future, but I don’t want anyone taking this post as some sort of promise. I’m just making a list.

Looking it over, I’d say enough time has passed that I could see me re-watching GT and Super and actually having something new to say about them someday. I gotta say, though, there is not much here for me to look forward to, aside from checking boxes off a bucket list. It’d be fun to see the smoking Korean Puar puppet, rewatching the Tournament of Power, uh, that scene where Goku holds Bee in his arms and gets his face licked. Wow, I’m really reaching here... uh, Cell started showing up in Super DBH, so that’s probably neat?
But my original thought still stands. You add all this up, and you have 305 episode/chapter thingies, and 12 movie/special thingies. Not quite as big as Dragon Ball/DBZ but big enough to qualify as a franchise in itself.
Hypothetically speaking, if I actually went through all of this in a one-year span, I feel like a lot of it would just be me bitching and moaning about all the mistakes and missed opportunities in the material. There’s some good stuff throughout, but it’s so diluted by the bad-to-meh stuff that I’m not sure it would be much fun to write or read. The nice thing about 2019 was that anytime I complained about a bad episode I knew I had 20 or 30 awesome ones waiting for me later on. There’s plenty of people on the internet complaining about Dragon Ball without me. I’d need to find a way to keep it fresh.
