Russian Footballers Who Missed Penalty Kicks Drop Dead from Nerve Agent

Moscow, Russia –  Last Saturday, the Russian national football (soccer) team lost its quarterfinal match against Croatia in a penalty shoot-out. By Tuesday, two players were dead. What did they share in common? They both fell victim to a mysterious nerve agent, and they both missed their penalty kicks.

Most observers immediately concluded that the two events were not purely coincidental. The deaths of the two athletes—only minutes apart—eerily resembled the recent demise of a middle-aged woman in south England last week who had been poisoned by an identical Soviet-era nerve agent known as “Novichok.”

In an official statement, Scotland Yard quickly named Russia and President Vladimir Putin as the culprits of these footballer attacks, which were further reminiscent of other assassination attempts that recently occurred on UK soil. Only four months ago, former Russian spy (and double agent) Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia both slipped into comas after being exposed to Novichok in Salisbury, England. Both Skripals have since recovered and been spirited away to undisclosed locations. Sadly, the two Russian football players were not so fortunate.

Fyodor Smolov, who missed the first penalty kick by lazily kicking it directly to the goalie, was found lifeless and foaming at the mouth in the back of a taxi on his way to the Sheremetyevo International Airport. Smolov’s teammate, Mario Fernandes, missed the goal completely, which apparently sealed his fate in the eyes of the Russian czar president. Fernandes, who enjoyed momentary heroism with his equalizing header in extra time on Saturday, was found face-down in a bowl of borscht. Coincidentally (or not), Fernandes was eating lunch at an airport restaurant.

During his NATO press conference yesterday—and in advance of his upcoming summit with Putin in Helsinki—President Trump was asked about his thoughts on the alleged murders.

“Well, he might say he didn’t do it,” Trump responded nonchalantly. “Have you noticed that Vlad seems to get accused of a lot of crazy things these days? I mean, why would Rosenstein hold a yuge press conference about the phony Witch Hunt on Friday the 13th, of all days?! A lot of people are saying that’s very fishy. A lot of people... But, look, I’ll ask Vlad directly. He may deny it. All I can do is say, ‘Did you?’ And, ‘Don’t do it again.’ But he may deny it. But I’ve got to tell you, only a really strong leader could do something like that and get away with it. Those guys totally choked. They’re chokers. So, either way, you’ve got to respect it.”
