ok here are some of the one part melbourne hpcc play highlights (part one only because i need to make two seperate posts… they’re too long together) in an attempted chronological order:
part one
first off, why so many dilfs? like not to be like this person about a family friendly play but seriously harry? draco? RON? RON RON RON OH MY GOD 🧎‍♀️ michael whalley please one chance
ron’s voice was very… mhmm. it was good.
harry got more attractive as he got more depressed too..
and also draco’s buttons and cuffs were sparkling and he had many silver rings on his fingers. ill leave it at that
anyways if we were to talk about actual content: the first train carriage scene was so gold omg. right before it started - karl sat down in scorpius’s carriage, seemed to realise who he was sitting with and then immediately this look of horror crossed over his face and he BOLTED away 😭😭 he ended up sitting with james sirius and craig loll
yann and polly were in a carriage together the cuties
also polly was in bicycle shorts the whole time. it was like a cloak and then just black bicycle shorts fr. idk if the actress just didnt have her pants or sum because i found out later that she was a cover (which is CRAZY because she played myrtle and polly so extremely well, she literally sounded exactly like myrtle im not kidding, aisha aidara has so much talent fr)
rose hostile side eye at scorpius when him and albus are talking for the first time i swearrrr shes so funny she was literally like this the entire time
rose looked so pleased with herself when she said “the rumour is that hes voldemort’s son! ☺️☺️” then she realises that both scorp and al are extremely uncomfortable and goes “😧😧😧well its not like its true! 😰 you clearly have a nose 😝” shes so funny bro
when albus was sorted into slytherin craig seemed to be the only one (besides scorpius) excited about it but then composed himself when he saw everyone else’s reactions
in wand dance (which is still the funkiest song of the whole score)— albus’s movement with his cloak wasnt as graceful as everyone else’s transitions in the dance, like he was messing up even that. he was more flinging it then twirling it around and his expression was one of a constant state of annoyance, like he’s aware he’s always messing up but he can’t change it because he doesn’t know how to. its why im grateful for sitting so close to the stage because i don’t think i would’ve recognised this (and other later acting i’ll talk about)
in between the first and second year with draco and harry mirroring each other was not gone unnoticed but was funny asf still.
like here’s harry trying to talk to his kid when karl runs up with his whole belly out wanting an autograph
and then you have draco who yann walks by once and he’s immediately glaring this boy down. like yann literally started ZOOMING AWAY 🏃‍♂️💨 bc draco’s intimidation tactics are so intense
scorpius sniffs rose twice whilst trying to flirt with her. w rizz.
the scene with amos, harry and albus was just ungh *chef’s kiss*
you can literally see the plan forming in albus’s head as he listens to them and his anger at his dad as he’s listening to them, harry’s discomfort at lying to amos whilst also being put to blame for cedric’s death yet again and amos’ bumbling confused pain. like idk george henare plays amos so well it was literally painful to watch
delphi’s eye makeup was so slay. tbh everything about her character was amazing
idk why i just noticed it but delphi literally acts like scorpius when her and albus first meet. awkward, unassuming, clumsy and nonthreatening and seemingly very sweet and funny. hmm.
if you take into account that she was in the background during the 9 3/4 scenes and have the opinion that she was planning on meeting albus for years, and observing him and his family the entire time, then she probably also purposefully tried to mimic the only person albus was known for getting along with, which was scorpius. HMMMM.
when delphi first meets harry she was smiling at him and looking at him with these wide eyes that can be mistaken for awe but as soon as she and amos were out of his line of sight and were leaving the stage she stopped smiling immediately but continued to look at him. the focus lights were off her and the scene was already changing but I NOTICED and it was fucking ominous
i could see how some of the effects worked when sitting up close. for instance i know that the incendio flames and the consequent fire were from tubes that were set into the pillars of st jeromes church. i could see some of the strings when things were flying around. bane’s two-body centaur was more noticeable and less smooth. when ron got kissed by the dementor i thought he was kissing back because he was discreetly holding the dementor by the waist 😭😭 then i realised he was hooking himself onto the dementor to be carried off
BUT there were some tricks that even i literally couldn’t explain and the one that comes to mind is when harry and ginny appeared in the bed during the post-nightmare bedroom scene. like how tf did that happen?? how????? i literally cannot think of anything besides the the actor and actress hiding in the mattress and then emerging BECAUSE LITERALLY HOW ELSE
ginny and harry slandering dumbledore in the bedroom scene 🫶🫶
draco looking at the audience like he’s ryan in the office every time harry says something. especially during the scene in the ministry meeting where harry says his scar is hurting. bro was so done with him.
when albus and scorpius were escaping the hogwarts express scorpius attempted to climb out onto the train’s roof first and he was sticking his leg out and pulling back in, and then sticking his leg out and pulling back in and then he turns to albus like 😧🫴 “i have never done this before bro” look on his face so albus pushes him away and just yanks himself out 💀
“my son is missing” “SO IS MINE” so good, the line delivery was perf
you know i’ve heard lots of people go on and on about how nyx calder plays the perfect scorpius and i totally get the hype now. even the way he stands is accurate to how i envision scorpius. and he’s always fidgeting with his hands, giving this impression of a cute little dorky german boy. his posture is always super straight and his hands are usually clasped which makes him look proper but awkward and very sweet, i love him, very superb acting through body language
speaking of which when amos was roasting the shit out of albus, scorpius looked so terrified. he was gripping albus’s robes and trying to pull him away 😭
“go to your room” being the first thing out of scorpius’s mouth to albus as soon as he’s polyjuiced as harry 💀
ron/albus tried to hide with scorp and delphi when hermione and harry were coming and they pushed him out of the office forcibly 😭😭
albus/ron was the number one instigator that whole scene was fucking funny and it was the first time i could watch it without cringing
when ron blocked the door from hermione he squatted and started t-posing in front of the door and went “im 🕺not🕺blocking🕺anything.” this whole scene was probably the funniest part of the play especially the “I WANT ANOTHER BABY OR A HOLIDAY AND I WILL INSIST ON IT”
also the line where hermione is like “there better not be another stink pellet in there” to ron/albus is replaced by “there better not be another romantic firework display in there” i love them sm
when ron/albus said to hermione that she married ron because of his “puckish sense of fun,” he was saying it a little flatly with this big awkward smile on his face and he was double thumbs-upping her. it looked so fourteen year old core lmfaooo
scorpius started hyperventilating on the ground when delphi and albus got swallowed by the book case and literally started crawling on all fours like *pat pat pat* cmon scorpius *pat* think!! *pat pat*
scorpius standing in between both albus and delphi talking… farther off in the forbidden forest as they were laughing. he looked so defensive like his hands were clenched and his whole body was tense, and when delphi said “wizzo” it seemed to snap scorpius out of whatever he was thinking and he went up to them and said (very sharply, mind you) “what’s wizzo?” like that’s HIS catchphrase. bro was jealoussssss heheeehehe
and when albus quizzed delphi instead of scorpius like usual, scorpius looked like he had been slapped
then when delphi said “im flattered but do you honestly think i can pass as a student” to albus scorpius started shaking his head aggressively and not so inconspicuously doing the cut-it-out hand gesture to albus 😭😭
when delphi kissed albus, scorpius flinched… and then slowly put his own cheek out and delphi literally was like “mmm no” 😭
scorpius said “you look sweaty and red” to albus after the kiss, it didnt sound light-hearted like the other times it did when i saw the play, but accusatory. hmm. interesting.
scorpius also said “sweaty and red” instead of “pale and red” like the script and i might be biased and reading too much into it, but i was thinking about why they might change something so minuscule. maybe because “sweaty” gives a grosser connotation then “pale,” and i genuinely think in this revised version of the play albus isn’t supposed to have a crush on delphi
when scorpius and albus are alone together looking at the school, and talking about how beautiful it is and how they each view their lives at present, scorpius was looking out at the view the whole time but halfway through the scene albus stops looking at the view and starts looking at scorpius instead!!! um!!! with this very soft look on his face as well, until they’re interrupted by hearing their parents come. guys. im not kidding. its so gay usually but up close the play is even worse my jaw was dropping.
albus’s “ZORRY HERZMIONE I ZINK HE HAZ GOZZEN YOU MIZZED WIZZ ZUMUN ELZZZE” in bad german accents and scorpius’s very manly, very loud “YEZZZZ 👹💪”
when albus and scorpius got caught by harry and co. albus went “hi dad 😙” and his voice was so high, bro was scared 😭😭
i have to think about whether i miss gryffindor albus or not. maybe. i think i kinda do bc it shows how albus being a loser isn’t dependent on his house (and neither is his connection to scorpius). but yeah that whole plotline was scrapped and albus just remained in slytherin in this timeline.
when harry told albus to stay away from scorpius, harry tried to leave it at that and leave but albus started to chase harry out of the hospital because bro was that desperate. his feet were literally bare (im pretty sure this is in the script too but seeing it live is so… god.)
the seperate scene where ron and hermione meet each other in private at the top of the staircase is merged with the scene where albus meets the new not-funny ron. and they both meet on top of the staircase with the light spotlighting them, and its very clear that they are in love with each other
hermione is about to walk off when ron calls her back and she immediately turns around and goes right back to him, her face is so happy 😭
and its so sad because this whole scene mirrors scorpius and albus so exactly in the staircase ballet. like if not in love, why mirroring ron and hermione throughout the play? (even in dark world, which i’ll get into later…)
anyways, staircase ballet: scorpius and albus stare at each other total of three times. and when i mean stare, i mean the light reflects off of them and they are frozen in prolonged silence (longing). once when the staircases meet, another when albus is on the ground and scorpius is at the top of the staircase, unreachable from him. last time is when the staircases stop at a cross section, and they’re standing, looking at each other. and from my angle i could see albus’s face the best, and i feel like it could be interpreted by either seeming apologetic or desperate, either way there was this very pleading look on his face.
they both froze when the saw each other and still look on the verge of moving to one another and then the staircases move off as soon as scorpius starts walking towards him.
albus looks so disappointed because HE WANTED SCORP TO MAKE THE FIRST MOVE because he’s too scared to do it himself. he ends up just sitting on the staircase and dropping his bag beside him in defeat, and looking away. scorpius still stands and watches albus go off. yah its as queer as i remember it. glad this wasnt cut.
draco was fixing and adjusting the furniture whilst duelling harry. idk if the furniture just wasnt on the mark on stage but it was fucking adorable. he kept fixing the chairs up and then patting it nervously ☹️ idc if it wasn’t intentional it seemed in character to me for him to just be a total busybody even in the midst of a duel
ginny’s micro-expressions at draco when he talks about how lonely he felt at school were amazing. harry looked a little uncomfortable when he was speaking but ginny looked really sympathetic to him, and draco notices this and thats why he speaks on “i know you must feel the same ginny” and shes like “i do” which immediately changes harry’s discomfort to shock, then i feel like he starts taking draco seriously
seen the play three times and during the fight scene with scorpius and albus, scorpius has acted differently each time. first time, scorpius was literally sobbing when talking to him, second time he was literally screaming at him in anger, third time he was just disappointed asf in him. i think this time was the best for his characterisation but god it hurt each time
mcgonagall’s “if i didn’t see you, then i didn’t see you” and she does this big over-exaggerated shrug and starts creeping away like a cartoon character to insinuate to albus and scorpius that shes leaving. i love her 😭
also when albus and scorpius were talking about their next plan i realised their bags are so different: albus has this raggedy big ass brown messenger bag and scorpius has this shiny, small, flashy, zesty little pouch. there are two types of gays.
myrtle was literally hitting on scorpius lmfao scorpius was just like 😨 the entire time
and of course myrtle’s “hello draco 😏 heloooooo harryyy 😻” nah because i get her
craig is such a fucking busy body he was trying to manage harry, ginny, draco AND mcgonagall and only stopped when draco pushed him away and death glared him 😭
erm why was umbridge hot asf. idfk the dark world looks really good on her guys
here’s part two

Bo Burnham: Inside Songs Ranked from Worst to Best
https://ift.tt/2JMbiJl
The musical of the summer was supposed to be a life-affirming celebration of one of New York’s most vibrant neighborhoods, full of color, romance, and big group dance numbers. Instead for many viewers, the musical of the moment was filmed and performed by one man, alone in isolation from the comfort (or discomfort, really) of his own home, with songs centered on techno paranoia, mental health, and the fear of aging. Maybe after a year stuck in their homes, audiences could relate to the existential dread and general anxiety on display in Bo Burnham: Inside more than a conventional movie musical.
Billed as a stand-up special, Burnham’s latest musical comedy endeavor finds the former wunderkind holed up and feeling more uncomfortable than ever. Writing, editing, directing, and performing from a claustrophobic studio, Burnham’s stand-up special skews more toward being a straight-up musical, and not because the special is light on jokes and missing an audience. Rather this has all the hallmarks of a musical narrative and plays closer to experimental cinema than sketch comedy.
Burnham expresses his characters’ inner-thoughts, fears, and desires via song throughout a contained narrative, in this case the narrative being one man trying to occupy himself during a pandemic. It has ballads, charm songs, comedy numbers, “I Am” and “I Want” songs, and a big reprise. By capturing his personal pandemic experience and putting the whole affair to song, Burnham has created one of the most compelling (and catchy!) accounts of life during 2020.
To celebrate the musical that we all needed after a year in our homes, we’ve decided to rank every song from Bo Burnham: Inside. You can stream along via the Inside (The Songs) album on the streaming platform of your choice.
20. I Don’t Wanna Know
Merely an interlude, “I Don’t Wanna Know” doesn’t quite work outside of watching the special itself. However, it is a clever way to address the fact that modern audiences do not have the attention span to sit through a film at home without checking their phone or complaining about a runtime.
19. Bezos II
While certainly meant to poke fun at the real-life Lex Luthor, it’s not that fun to listen to Bezos’ name repeated. Stil, Burnham does elicit a few laughs with his over-the-top mock congratulations. “You did it!”
18. Any Day Now
A Sesame Street-like mantra that plays over the credits, “Any Day Now” suggests this could all end either hopefully soon or on a depressingly vague far-off date that will never come. We’d like to think it’s the former, but it’s safe to assume what Bo thinks.
17. All Time Low
While this number gets docked points for its short runtime, it absolutely packs a punch with its four-line, single verse. After Bo admits that his mental health is rapidly deteriorating, he describes what it’s like to have a panic attack set to a chipper ‘80s dance backbeat. Unfortunately, we don’t get to ride the wave long enough, and judging lyrics, that’s probably a good thing for Bo.
16. Content
This strong opening number musically sets the vibe for Inside, letting us know that we’re in for some synth-heavy throwback beats that would be best listened to underneath a disco ball.  Also incorporating silly backing vocals, a hallmark of many of Inside’s best tracks, Burnham declares he’s back with some sweet, sweet content. “Daddy made you your favorite,” he sings, and he ain’t wrong.
15. Bezos I
Unlike the reprise in “Bezos II,” “Bezos I” gets by off its increasingly deranged energy, with Burnham roasting fellow tech billionaires and working himself up into a manic frenzy by song’s end. Musically, it sounds like the soundtrack to an intense boss battle on a Sega Genesis game before ending with a sick little synth solo and Burnham hilarious squawking. It’s arguably the only acceptable thing that Bezos has ever been associated with.
14. Unpaid Intern
While “Unpaid Intern” is one of Inside’s shortest tracks, it absolutely makes the most of its time. The jazzy tune scorches the exploitative nature of unpaid internships before Burnham breaks out into a laugh-out-loud worthy scat routine. It unfortunately ends too soon.
13. Shit
Inside’s funkiest jam sounds like Burnham wrote the lyrics for a new Janelle Moane album cut. Bo show’s off his vocal dexterity and plumbs the depths of his depression in a surprisingly danceable fashion. Throwing in a little faux crowd interaction helps bring home the fact that we have all felt like this at one point or another during the pandemic.
12. Sexting
This slow-jam details the complications of sexting, throwing out hilariously too-true punchlines like “the flash makes my dick look frightened.” “Sexting” feels like one of a few songs that could most easily appear on previous Burnham specials. Proving that Inside’s musical textures do not come exclusively from ’80s synth pop, the outro of the song expertly mirrors modern pop trends by throwing in some trap-influenced “yahs” at the end of Bo’s lines.

11. How the World Works
Influenced by comedian Hans Teeuwen and children’s entertainment in general, “How the World Works” finds Burnham going back to the well by playing the ignorant, smarmy white guy who is oblivious of the real issues plaguing nonwhite Americans. What’s even better though is Socko calling Burnham out on forcing others to educate him for his own self-actualization instead of doing the work on his own for the betterment of others.
Socko pointedly asks “Why do you rich f—— white people insist on seeing every socio-political conflict through the myopic lens of your own self-actualization?” Not to keep things too heavy, the song ends with an absurdist bit where Burnham returns Socko to the nether place that he goes when he’s not attached to Burnham’s hand. Scathing and bizarre, it’s a great piece of social commentary.
10. FaceTime With My Mom
While most of the music of Inside feels directly transported from the 1980s, “FaceTime With My Mom” seems only inspired by the past decade’s musical trends, updating the sounds in much of the same way that the Weeknd and Dua Lipa have. This is Bo Burnham as a hitmaker, and his attempt is convincing. “FaceTime With My Mom” earns easy laughs by getting to the seemingly specific, yet universal things that all our moms do over video chat.
9. Goodbye
Every good musical needs a good closing track, and Burnham nails it with “Goodbye,” pulling off a reprise that weaves in many of the special’s signature musical moments and touches on the special’s core themes. A forlorn piano ballad before it soars through Inside’s best motifs, “Goodbye” caps a triumphant musical achievement, coming back to “Look Who’s Inside Again” just to punch you in the gut one last time.
8. Problematic
Addressing his past work and some aspects that have not aged well, while also skewering celebrity apologies, “Problematic” is self-aware critique by way of an ‘80s workout bop. From the specific Aladdin confession to the overall apology for being “vaguely shitty,” Bo has never made accountability sound so good.
7. That Funny Feeling
This is Bo Burnham’s version of Father John Misty’s “Holy Shit,” a laundry list of all the stupid things that are signaling the fall of culture and civilization as we know it. If Misty hadn’t gotten there first, we may have had this one ranked higher. Still, Burnham manages to come up with a sticky chorus that you’ll be humming the next time something makes you feel like you’re living in the uncanny valley.
6. White Woman’s Instagram
Perhaps the special’s most playful moment, “White Woman’s Instagram” uses the musical cues of an inspiring empowerment anthem to poke fun at the predictably, perfectly curated feed of a “girl boss” Instagram. The song is greatly enhanced by the accompanying visuals, which find Bo recreating the meticulously staged and glamorous portraits that women pass off as their everyday lives.
However, Bo always likes to sneak in some sentimentality, and imagines a genuinely heartfelt post to his white woman character’s deceased mother. Don’t worry, the emotional moment doesn’t overstay its welcome, and we’re soon back to laughing at horribly derivative political street art.
5. All Eyes on Me
The droning synth and pitch-down vocals make “All Eyes On Me” oddly hypnotic and beautiful. The song seems to be addressing Bo’s depression along with his need for validation and attention, a juxtaposition that many performers deal with. It becomes clear that Burnham isn’t addressing an invisible audience, but himself, trying to will himself up and out of his dreary mental state.
4.  Look Who’s Inside Again
A classic “I Am” musical song, “Look Who’s Inside Again” just may be Inside’s most emotionally resonant track that seems to hit closest to who Bo Burnham was and who he is today. This is the song that I will most likely regret the most for ranking so low.
“Well, well, look who’s inside again. Went out to look for a reason to hide again,” perfectly describes the cycle of depression and will, for me, be the special’s most lasting moment. The downbeat ending “come out with your hands up, we’ve got you surrounded” is heartbreaking enough to send a shudder down your spine.
3. Comedy
The special’s real first number is absolutely packed with hooks, from the “Call me and I’ll tell you a joke” bridge to the “Should I be joking at a time like this?” change-up. This is Bo really flexing how far he’s come as a musician, expertly utilizing autotune and a key change (us “stupid motherf***ers” can’t resist them).
“Comedy” also finds Bo comfortably in the lane that we’re most used to seeing him in, playing the egomaniacal white messiah with a wink. “Comedy” is the tone-setter and it’s so good that it lets you know that you’re in good hands for the next hour plus.
2. 30
Either I’m ranking this song too highly due to its personally relatable nature or the fact that I haven’t been able to get “All my stupid friends are having stupid children” out of my head, but I really don’t care. “30” is Inside’s biggest earworm and addresses the existential terror that comes with no longer getting pats on the back for being a young wunderkind.
“30” also examines generational differences, showing how 30 year-old people are more infantile than ever. However, at the end of the day it all comes back to those shimmering keys and that irresistible refrain. Apologies to my friends with children.
1. Welcome to the Internet
No matter how deep and emotionally rich some of Inside’s other tracks may be, “Welcome to the Internet” is the one that will live on the longest. If this were a traditional musical, this would the antagonists’ showstopper; a vaudevillian romp through the alluring chaos that is the internet. Speeding up and slowing down the pace to mirror the manic, addictive nature of surfing the net, Burnham pitches the negative aspects of online culture as they are: a feature, not a bug. Promising “a little bit of everything all of the time,” “Welcome to the Internet” is almost as enticing as the dark tool itself.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });

A Man On Fire - Chapter 71
Purse, money, cards, keys..got all of that..Hair ok? Yeah..I swear this dress hugged me before..she stared at herself in the mirror and let her hands run down her hips, she had gotten so thin..sadness and pain had been her diet the last month or so..I'm not ready for this, for half of her life she had longed for this night, the opening of her exhibition and now..now she dreaded having to shake all those hands and her work being scrutinized. Just a few hours, nobody she knew was gonna be there anyway, Charles had only invited art dealers, a few art critics here and there, no big deal, right? Right! She grabbed her coat and hesitated at the door, looking around her apartment, gone were the paintings, Charles' men had come to collect the last items this morning, it was like Jared had left her apartment for good all over again. He was there now, hanging from the walls of the gallery, a 'capsule' collection of a time that was over for good, it was out of her hands now and it felt weird, what would she paint tomorrow? What was gonna be your inspiration? No, don't think about it, first this, one last time, one more night and then hopefully you're gonna turn the page, she bit her lip and slowly closed the door behind her. “How do I look?” she twirled in front of him, distracting him for a second from his mails, “nice” he forced himself to say something positive, “we don't have to stay too long there, do we? I just feel like partying and an art gallery isn't exactly the funkiest place to spend my friday night”. Sighing he got up from the bed “what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right?” he straightened his tie, sharp suit, his hair pulled back in a long, wavy ponytail, why didn't he have the guts to go by himself? He needed someone to be there with him, even if it was a model/fuckbuddy whose cupsize was bigger than her brain, a thousand times he'd asked himself what had gotten into him to insist to be on that guestlist, it was masochism in its' purest form but his curiosity was bigger than his fear. On the other side of the city, the cardoor was held open for her “Good evening, Miss De Robiano” he greeted her, “Good evening, Derek” she returned his smile, “you're early” he guided her over the red carpet, “is that code for 'nobody bothered to come'?” she looked at him with worried eyes. “Oh no, of course not” Derek tried to reassure her, “Harper!” Charles welcomed her with his arms wide open, his eyes twinkling as he pulled her in for a warm hug, the last couple of days he had been her nemesis and her closest friend, “hello Charles..wait” she stopped him as he released her and took her hand to drag her inside the gallery “before we go in..I don't remember if I told you already how grateful I am..”. Charles kissed her forehead “I'm the one who's grateful..this is one of the most emotional exhibitions I've ever done, so much power hanging on the walls..anyway, it's only just begun, let's go see what people really think”.
Car after car started rolling up in front of the gallery, one with Jared in it who buttoned up his jacket as he got out, surprised to see a couple of paps hovering in front of the entrance, goddammit, he was supposed to be incognito here, not wanting to ruin her big night, he just wanted to see for himself what Charles had been raving about. He kept his head down even if the paps recognized him and tried to get his attention as he walked inside where he was quickly guided to the balcony that gave a great view on the actual hall. “Oh..my..god..” he murmured as he feasted his eyes on the paintings below, brilliant, just brilliant..is that? That's me..oh sweet jesus, he had to stop the urge to run downstairs and check them up close. He walked to the other side of the balcony but stopped in his tracks when the centerpiece caught his attention, there it was in all it's painful glory, 3 metres high and wide..the painting of her parents on a throne, their mouths stitched shut, bloody hearts ripped out and dangling on their chest..wow!. He had seen her work on it and had even helped her with it for a few hours, but seeing it hang there in all its magnificent glory, simply took his breath away. Everyone seemed too engrossed in her paintings to be paying attention to her, which was exactly how she had dreamed it to be, she wanted honest opinions and the best way to do that was to eavesdrop. “Ok, I'm gonna give it to you straight “ Charles walked up to her “17 are already sold, that's almost half of them sold in an hour” jittering with excitement, but she just stared at him in disbelief “what? But..?” was all she managed to say. “I know! And I still have to do the openingsspeech” he giggled. “Hello Harper” the voice that doomed up behind her made her blood curdle, oh no, nonono, ever so slowly she turned around “mama” to look right into their eyes “..papa”. Up on the balcony Jared swallowed hard, oh my god..who had invited her parents? Obviously not her because she looked like a scared little cat all of a sudden.
”Who invited you?” her voice was so cold, “oh don't worry, we're not staying, your father has to give a speech at the UN..one of our friends informed him of our daughter's big night” her mother calmly said with that icecold poise of her. “I'm sorry, did you say 'daughter'? Last thing I remember is that you took my title away and cut me off financially, you basically disowned me” don't pick a fight, Harper, not here, not now. “Mr. McVey, good evening, how are you?” his father ignored her completely and reached for Charles hand, “I'm well, Sir..thank you” he shook her father's hand, wait, Charles invited her parents? All her trust and her gratitude towards him was washed away in a split second. “Can I show you around” Charles tried to defuse the tense situation, “lead the way” a sarcastic smile viciously curled around her father's mouth while he grabbed his wife's hand, leaving their child cursing under her breath. Jared watched breathlessly, her shoulders were completely cramped up from holding in all that anger and fury and he knew how lonely she must feel right now, she would rather die than admit it but he knew that all she really wanted and needed was the love and respect of her parents. All the pieces of the puzzle finally fell together for him, for the first time he could  really see and feel her loneliness, it was heartbreaking to realize that they had to become ex-partners to truly see the harsh reality. Harper couldn't take it anymore and downed her glass in one go, don't go over there, don't make a scene..she had to fight the urge to simply walk out of here, just go smoke a cigarette, clear your head.. “SPORCO BASTARDO” her father's curse thundered through the gallery shutting up every conversation. Turning around she saw her father crash to the floor like it was all happening in slow motion, her brain froze for a second like she was living a dream but then the high pitched scream of her mother shot her back to action and she ran towards her parents. “An ambulance” she breathed at Charles who had his phone to his ear in a split second but when she kneeled to check on her father, her mother pushed and kicked her and started banging her fist on her head. “Don't you dare touch him, you killed him, you KILLED HIM” her mother's hysterical screams combined with the rain of punches had her close her eyes hoping to wake up from this nightmare.
Jared felt his breath hitch in his throat watching the drama unfold but on instinct he ran downstairs and pushed through the crowd, “Mrs. De Robiano, stop! STOP IT!” he raised his voice as his arm wrapped around her waist and pulled her back to stop her from beating up her kid. Despite the fact that she was a petite lady he could barely pull her away from Harper, the only thing that interrupted her rage and brought her back to her senses was the arrival of the paramedics that pushed through the crowd to help her husband. “Harper? Are you ok?” ok, this really was a nightmare, this couldn't be real, she was imagining things but then the soft touch of his hand made her eyes flutter open again, looking straight into Jared's eyes. The shock of seeing him was paused by a paramedic leaning over her to check if she was alright, “I'm fine..” she lied as she grabbed his hand to help her get back on her feet. “It's all my daughter's fault, she made this..this..gastly painting” her mother pointed at the centerpiece painting of them “she has her heart set on killing us, she's..pure..EVIL” still hysterically screeching at the paramedics who were loading her father onto a stretcher. “Let's go” they rushed the stretcher through the gallery, her mother teetering after them in her high heels, Harper felt like she was glued to the floor, there was not a single pair of eyes in the room that wasn't dismissively staring at her. “Excuse me” she mumbled as she couldn't do anything else but follow the paramedics, this was all her own fault, every single bit of a blame that could be put on her was justified. “What hospital are you taking him to?” Charles came walking up straight to the paramedics and quickly gestured at Derek “get her a cab right now”, and before she could even say or do something she was taken outside, put in a cab with the address of the hospital all by herself, on her big night that had exploded into a nightmare, gone was her career and probably gone was her father and it was all by her own doing. The cab made a turn and started following the blue lights in front of it, and all Jared could see was his ex sitting there all alone, her face buried in her hands, and that was the second time tonight he felt his heart break for her, all that beauty and all that brain and still the loneliest little girl in the world.
”I'm sorry, you'll have to wait here” a nurse stopped her as the ambulance arrived at the ER, “but I'm his daughter” Harper tried to reason with her, “and still we have strict orders not to let you in, only your mother is allowed in at the moment, if you want you can wait right here, a doctor will be with you shortly to give you all the details” the nurse pointed at a tiny cubicle with a chair. Meekly she did as she was told and sat there shivering in her evening gown, the adrenalin and the fear of seeing her parents..and all the drama started to manifest itself in tears and shaking hands that tried to wipe them away as fast as they fell. Why did they even show up tonight? She wasn't sure but Charles must have invited them..Jared..had she imagined it all or had he really been there? Was Charles on a mission to destroy her? Completely lost in her thoughts and her tears, she didn't notice the doctor who made his presence know with a soft cough “Miss De Robiano?”, her head shot up, “your father has suffered a major heart attack, his condition is critical, we're doing everything within our power to save him”. She swallowed hard “Oh..is there any way I can see him? And how's my mother?” and stood up with a panic “you cannot see him, I'm sorry..you will have to leave, the Countess insists on it, she said her children will all be here shortly”, what?? her children? “But I'm one of her children..” Harper protested. “I'm sorry, Miss..you will have to leave the premises”. It was just blow after blow, she came all the way out here for nothing? Only to be blamed for everything, “ok” was all she could say, she took a big breath and with the heaviest of heart and feet, she started walking to the exit. The cold, sharp wind hit her hard, she had no coat so she crossed her arms over chest and started rubbing her upper arms, if only she could rub the cold away that had her heart in a choking grip, an unstoppable stream of tears ran down her cheeks, I don't know what to do. Through the blur of her tears she could see a man walking up to her, then stop in his tracks, hands in the pockets of his pants he was staring at her..who?..”Harper?” him calling her name made her cry even harder. Jared's heart broke again seeing her standing there completely helpless and bewildered so he closed the distance between them and pushed himself against her, her arms folded around him under his jacket crying her heart out against his chest. “Let's go home” he whispered and kissed the top of her head “you're coming to LA with me”.

Some new ones!
CASSANDRA O’NEAL (Keyboardist, 2009-2016)
We were doing a residency at Madison Square Garden in 2011 and we had an aftershow and the late, great Sharon Jones, who opened some of the shows, was playing. We’re watching them and they’re killing it, she’s so dope, Prince is sitting next to me, it’s a party, it’s the cap on a perfect day. Prince had on these leggings and he says (low voice) “You like my pants?” “Yes, they’re gorgeous.” We go back to listening — you didn’t really strike up conversations with him, you just let him lead. Then he says “They’re killing, aren’t they? ” “Oh yes.” “I should give her some money. Do you have any money?” because he didn’t carry cash. I had a $50 bill so I gave it to him and he says “I’ll be right back, save my seat.” So he melts into the crowd, comes back and says “I gave your $50 to Questlove.” “You did? Oh, okay.” So later I run into Quest and we made some smalltalk and I said, “By the way, did Prince give you a $50 bill?” He says [surprised], “Yeah, he did.” And I kinda jokingly said, “He was supposed to do something else with it, can I have it back?” And he said “No, because every time he sees me he always gives me a piece of money and I hang it up on my wall. So this 50 will make $163.25” or some very specific number like that — he really knew how much Prince had given him. He was very nice about it, then he says, “I can’t give you back that 50, but here, you can have this instead,” and gave me a $100 bill!
REBEKAH ALPERIN (Universal Music Publishing/independent consultant, 2002-2004) One time he was playing a stadium in Hong Kong for maybe 15-20,000 people. He ran backstage while the band kept playing, said “Hello Rebekah,” in that deep voice, walked over to this full-length mirror, looked himself up and down and did that funky thing with his head just like in that [2005 Fred Armisen “Saturday Night Live”] “Prince Show” skit and puckered up his lips — like, “I’m Prince!” — and ran back onstage. I fell over laughing when I saw that skit, they had it so perfect.
REBEKAH ALPERIN We were backstage at rehearsal the day before he played the [2004] Grammys with Beyonce, and there were so many acts rehearsing that they had to share space. He suddenly came out of his dressing room and he looked straight at me and said in that low voice, “I’m sharing… a bathroom… with Justin Timberlake.” Nothing against Justin, of course, I just don’t think Prince was expecting to be sharing a bathroom.
SUSAN ROGERS (Engineer, 1983-1987) This is an aside, but at the very last show the crew wanted to play a prank on Prince and lower the penguin down onto the back of the stage when he was taking his long guitar solo during “Purple Rain” and he would be focused on playing and never know. So one of the riggers up in the rafters had a rope around the penguin and was starting to lower it. But you had to be really careful if you were trying to play a practical joke on Prince, because all of a sudden, for some reason, during the solo he started to turn around — I had a headset on, and the guy in the headset is yelling “Abort! Abort! Abort!” and they’re yanking it up into the rafters. I don’t know if Prince ever saw it but he must have noticed something black and white and purple flying upward at the back of the drum riser.
Anyway, by the end of the tour, the photo gallery [of taking Polaroids of people who had fallen asleep and the sleep penguin]  was complete except for two people: Prince and me. No one had caught either of us sleeping on the job. We were at Sunset Sound in L.A. finishing an album, it was either [Prince and the Revolution’s] “Around the World in a Day” or Sheila E.’s [“Romance 1600”] album, and Prince had invited some people down to hear it. There weren’t enough chairs, so I sat on the floor. Now, I had been up all night, they’d dimmed the lights and lit the candles, and I’m sitting there and I’ve got my eyes closed, just happy we’ve got the record done, and I hear “Click! Bzzz…” It was Prince and he’d put the penguin on me! I was like “No! No! I wasn’t sleeping! This is fraud!” So I was determined that I was gonna get him.
Sure enough, a little later he’s in the chair, exhausted, listening to music with his eyes closed, and I saw my opportunity. So I came from the back and I’m slowly, slowly pushing that penguin across the floor, and I get it just to the back of his chair and I’m raising my hands to take the picture — and I hear his voice go, “Who do you think you’re gonna get with that?” [Laughter] Nobody got him.
MARC ANTHONY I tried to play a trick on him once. It was the first time he came over to the house, and I wanted to see how tall he really was. My plan was to tell him we have a no-shoes policy in the house so he was gonna have to take off his heels. So I meet him at the car, “Hey it’s great to see you, welcome, but I have to tell you, we don’t allow shoes in the house.” And he said, in that beautiful satiny voice, [drops voice to seductive purr], “Then we’ll talk outside.” [Laughing] He did not go for that. I tried, man!
RAPHAEL SAADIQ We were at the Oakland Coliseum in 1986 with Sheila E., opening up for Lionel Richie [Prince was there for a surprise guest appearance]. I’m from Oakland and I used to sit outside the Coliseum and say “One day I’m gonna play there” — my whole family was in the audience, I was 20 years old, this was my night. Prince had this prayer that he did sometimes before shows, so we say the prayer, the lights go down, everybody goes onstage, but I run back to the dressing room. You remember that line in the “Purple Rain” movie where Prince is holding a puppet saying “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the funkiest of them all?” I run to the mirror and I say it — “Who’s the funkiest of them all?” — and then I hear this voice go, “Is THAT right?” And Prince was sitting in the chair, looking at me! I swear, he appeared like a ghost, he wasn’t in the room when I got there. I screamed — “AAAAAH!” — and ran to the stage. It was the scariest shit ever, bro — that was weird.

My First Time w/The Delta Riggs @MaxWattsHouseofMusic
Tumblr media
After rocking sets with Melbourne sweethearts BATZ kicking off the Max Watts stage with their hair whipping set and the boys from The Moving Stills rocking their timeless Alt-pop rock jams with heart pouring jam “Nineteen” the lights went down. As the stage lights bursted with beams of excitement from the ground up. The crowd swarmed from the bar to the front and The Delta Riggs began.
A night of swagger, underplayed sass and lead singer Elliot grooving his James Brown feet along with the bands groovy chemistry. The crowds shined their dance moves along to Riggs’ to create what was the funkiest night. I can safely confirm that The Delta Riggs did not hold back on showing their fans a good time. The Delta Riggs shook their musical fireworks  with classics from their discography, which lit the crowd up with the blazing guitars shining the spotlight on songs such as  “Baddest Mother Fucker in the Beehive” and in addition playing new songs for fans from their upcoming album.
Speaking of new songs, with The Delta Riggs having just released their new single “Fake That” showing a new direction of classic pop with acoustic elements in the sound for the band’s catalogue. The performance of it highlighted a powerful timeless experience. With the acoustic guitar providing intimate vocal moments for Elliot’s cut through raspy vocal tone, the night officially exploded when the band came in together and the crowds were chanting along to the catchy guitar riffs that felt almost stadium like. By the end of the song crowds were yelling the lyrics, pointing fingers in the air and people were off the ground and on shoulders.
To finish the night, the lads came back for an encore party to play their hits “Supersonic Casualties” and funky town tune “Never Seen This Before.” This had fans such as myself walking out with a night to remember and stamped the punchline that “The Delta Riggs are back and aren’t going anywhere.” I’m honestly so keen for the new album and you should be too!
If you’re a first timer to the Riggs like I was, I can guarantee you this. The Delta Riggs are going to give you punchy charisma in their catchy choruses and twisting grooves that’ll party in your ears, making you wish you had a disco ball on your rearview mirror. It’ll make your car ride/carpool karaoke the place to be!
Go check out their new single “Fake That” on our Spotify Playlist :)

Diana was a bit... stuck in the past. She grew up rocking with disco music. Oh, how she wished she could go back to the 70's! Why did people stop liking disco in the blink of an eye? She had a mission: Bring. Back. Disco. She trained her voice, so that even Aretha Franklin would be proud of her. She had the funkiest dance moves. She had the looks. ... But she didn't have an audience. Disco just wasn't popular. Diana almost gave up. Some years later, in a backyard sale, she found a Necklace. It had a green worn-out crystal, and golden band. Something beckoned her to it. She tried the necklace in her house, in front of a mirror, and she almost screamed when she saw herself: dozens of crystal shards, of different colors, started growing out of her body. Her afro seemed like a starry night, with so many bright jewels on it. But she did not fear. She sang. And when each note left her lips, the crystals amitted a bright light, of vibrant colors. She knew why the necklace beckoned her. She had the voice. She had the looks. And now, she had a way of making everyone look her way. She herself would be the Disco. She would be the disco ball and the stage lights. The audience would be dazzled by her. ----------------------------------------------------------- Nowadays, Di'Aman is the top diva. Whenever she is in concert, the whole city lightens up. Literally. Her equipment: a custom diamond headset microphone. Her hands need to be free to dance. Her logo: made by her fans, with her face and her signature, and she gladly started using it. Every screen shows it, to demonstrate how much she loves her fans. Her amulet: the necklace. Di'Aman doesn't know anything about it. But she doesn't care. It is a part of her now. With time, crackles have started appearing on the crystal. Her powers have had no change, yet. But she cannot help but to think... "what will happen if it breaks? Will I too be shattered?" No. No time for brooding. Her fans need her. And people need Disco. Aaaaaah. This took me a while to make. And my computer almost crashed multiple times with so many lights and sparkles. So i said enough is enough. But I like it. My entry for the Arcane Idol Original Character Challenge on DA.

Think Of Us As Bookends: Jenny Lewis Interviewed
Clash Music August 8, 2019
American songwriter on her hidden hip-hop roots, creative honesty, and collaboration...
By Sarah Bradbury
Tumblr media
“We can’t do anything about the shit out there,” Jenny Lewis says from the stage at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire in West London, “but we’re all OK together in here.”
Bravely clad in figure-hugging, head-to-toe rose-gold sequins in spite of the atypical British heat still burgeoning outside the ram-packed venue, the Las Vegas-born musician oozes retro-edged glamour in her flame-red beehive and delivers a glitzy, soulful performance, every bit the music and style icon her reputation dictates.
The image she cuts on stage is in stark contrast to the laid-back woman in t-shirt and trainers I had the pleasure of speaking to just days earlier from a hotel room sofa at the K West.
Throughout our freewheeling chat that touches on Ariana Grande’s towering heels at Coachella, her love of boxing, and whether you sneeze when you eat peppermint, amongst more heavy-going topics, I feel the counteracting forces of an effusive warmth with an intimidating otherworldliness, as if speaking with a Hollywood film star of yesteryear.
Husky-toned statements end in pregnant pauses with eye contact firmly held, each anecdotal answer to a question leaving me on tenterhooks of what might come next.
The American singer-songwriter’s life in the limelight began as a child actress, appearing in Troop Beverly Hills and Brooklyn Bridge, Baywatch and The Golden Girls, Jell-O and Toys R Us ads in the late 80s/early 90s, her earnings going to support her family after her parents separated.
She made her break into music heading up much-loved LA indie band Rilo Kiley from 1998, which saw success over four albums and tracks featured on the likes of Noughties teen obsessions The O.C. and Dawson’s Creek. As well as time spent in The Postal Service, Jenny & Johnny and Nice As Fuck*, Lewis has been pursuing a solo career since 2006’s 'Rabbit Fur Coat'.
Earlier this year came the release of her fourth solo studio album, 'On The Line', to rapturous acclaim, delivering yet another installment of the particular brand of country-infused indie rock she has carved out for herself, which she has since been touring the US, Europe and many a festival stage with.
The journey to the album’s completion wasn’t an easy one - while 2014’s 'The Voyager' was preoccupied with the breakup of Rilo Kiley, facing her father’s death and suffering the tyranny of depression and insomnia, the five intervening years before the release of 'On The Line' brought their own set of challenges: the break down of her 12 year relationship with partner and musician Johnathan Rice and her mother’s death from cancer.
Yet while these life events may have left indelible marks on the singer-songwriter, the songs produced in their wake are counterintuitively dominated by spangly sing-along choruses, lucid images and strongly-drawn characters in immersive narratives. In her explanation of what inspired the album, she’s impossibly understated:
“Just life as it happens. All the things that you would imagine that happened between like 35 and 40. A lot of stuff happens in that period. So my songs either predict or mirror or shadow real life. I never know what I'm going to write about, I just kind of write about it.”
In that respect, songwriting is often a kind of therapy for the artist: “I think it's a feeling that births a song,” she explains thoughtfully. “And it's usually a feeling of agony or pain. Music is kind of therapeutic. And in that way it's something to turn to. It doesn't have to come from that place but I feel like it's always a feeling and then hopefully something catchy pops up.”
“In order for me to remember it, it has to be incredibly catchy or it'll just disappear into the ether of my unfinished songs pile. From 12 years ago, I have this one called ‘The Scorpion and the Lily’, that's just this thing that keeps unfolding. I don't think it's very good. I better stop…”
The intensely personal nature of her music means that the experience of releasing them out into the public realm can be a double-edged sword: “The life of a record is so funny because in the formative stage, it feels so potent. Working on it takes however long it takes. But this one took a minute, so to have it done and out in the world and now starting to see people know the songs, it's really satisfying. But it's also like, ‘How do you know that? That's really personal! Stop singing along with that sir, it's inappropriate!”
There’s also a process of translating the album tracks to work live: “On the road with a live band, you’re not playing any backing tracks, it's all what we're creating organically. So sometimes it doesn't work, a record piece.”
In particular, she notes collaborator Beck, the first of many on the album, is a meticulous producer: “Everything is very deliberate. So unless you hit all those marks live, sometimes a song will feel not as great. It takes playing it out in front of people 20, 30 times where it's like, mediocre. And then one night, you're like, ‘we got it.’”
But it’s a collaboration she has found exhilarating, “to experience my own songs through like another artist’s prism, rather than like a straight engineer, there's a trust. It's exciting to just feel what is going to happen. It’s the room. It's the cast of characters. It's how you feel on that day. It's the song. If the song sucks, it's not going to fly. But once I had the songs, I was very open to send them off to college or whatever.”
Growing up with parents as lounge musicians in Las Vegas, music was always going to figure largely in Lewis’ life: “They had a band together. And so music is just in the genetics, like that's just been the family thing. I grew up singing with my mom and my sister, and my dad was a virtuosic harmonica player - genius - so music was just the family business. I also had this side thing as an actor, which was also the family business. But then I just started writing from a young age.”
Her mother’s singer-songwriter records were certainly a key influence but Lewis credits a love of hip-hop for her obsession and dexterity as a lyricist: “I think it was hip-hop that really got me into words. My mom was listening to Laura Nero and Barbra Streisand. But then it was my music, like A Tribe Called Quest, that was a huge, just poetic influence. It was Big Daddy Kane, it was like Run DMC. Souls of Mischief. EPMD - all this lyrical stuff. I’d write poetry and raps. And then someone taught me how to play a couple chords on the piano and the guitar and then that was it.”
It was then later that country music came onto Lewis’ radar, completing the “mixtape” of genres that define her output: “I got into Gram Parsons and the Byrds in the early 2000s, then into Bakersfield stuff a little bit later. It’s all about storytelling. I like very evocative storytelling.”
And it is that very love of storytelling that has led Lewis to sit apart as a songwriter, bringing the acute specificities of her experiences and musical education to bear on a sound that invites her listener into a distinct world via vivid imagery and often biting witty observations in each track.
Tumblr media
Opening with ‘Heads Gonna Roll’, the “lyrical mission statement,” featuring none other than Ringo Star plus a narcoleptic poet from Duluth, sycophants in Marrakech and nuns from Harlem, Lewis sees 'On The Line' as a story “from front to back. It begins with a breakup. But it's really a rebound. And then a death and rebirth.”
“So the beginning, it's like a play in my mind: here are the characters, now go for it. And Ringo's on the first track. It's a little braggy to put Ringo on the first track. But that is maybe the coolest thing that's ever happened to me…”
Also featured on the record are Jim Keltner - “one of the all-time rock and roll drummers” - Benmont Tench, Don Was, Jim Keltner and Jason Falkner. Delectable melodies and nods to country-pop and 70s soft rock serve to seductively sugarcoat searingly poignant evocations of much darker subject matter, arguably the most candid reflections on her past her music has ever dealt with.
As Lewis admits, ‘Little White Dove,’ is the “funkiest song about mourning and grieving.” Tackling her mother’s heroin addiction, their decades-long estrangement and final reconciliation before she died in hospital from liver cancer, she sings, “A mother and child / Emergency behind a yellow curtain / On the second floor / All the guardian angels at the door / With their long white coats and stethoscopes” before leading into the line: “I’m the heroin.”
‘Wasted Youth’ ponders her years acting as a child, “I wasted my youth on a poppy / Doo-doo doo-doo doo, just because,” nodding to the hard-earned cash part-funding her mother’s opiate addiction. Stand out track ‘Red Bull & Hennessy’, hits on her painful break from Rice, “And we had it all / It's falling apart / Never getting back again without that spark.”
‘Party Clown’ brings us Fuji apples, scorpions, beetles floating in red wine, while asking: “Can you be my puzzle piece, baby? / When I cry like Meryl Streep.”
Amid heartbreak and grief, lust and infatuation, cynical detachment and raw emotion, there’s a thread of black humour, as is pointed to in the album opener: “And maybe after all is said and done / We'll all be skulls.”
Having become increasingly adept as a solo artist, Lewis still looks back at first leaving her band as challenging: “Those were the best times ever. It's so amazing to see things for the first time, especially with a bunch of your friends around. It was so potent, and so fresh, and so new that it was like as exciting as it ever has been.”
Branching out at first filled her with trepidation, she recalls: “I was terrified. Making my first solo record, my friend asked me to make it for his label. That wasn't something that I would have done at that time. So I feel like I've been encouraged by people throughout my career. I've had these little spirit guides that have kind of like pushed me, like, ‘go do it. You can do it on your own.’”
That encouragement led her to surprise herself of just what she could achieve: “the art itself is the surprising part. When you realise you can do it. I remember hearing Rabbit Fur Coat off the tape in the studio after we had just cut. It was like live music. It sounded exactly like my dreams. It sounded like my soul. Band music is a collective soul but it’s different, it's everyone's experience. This was so personal.”
And now, she thrives on being, “the creative director of my world. I feel more comfortable doing it, you know, designing the set and directing the music videos. Like I directed the ‘Just One Of The Guys’ video” - a brilliantly fun ensemble of Kristen Stewart, Anne Hathaway and Brie Larson donning Adidas tracksuits and fake ‘taches - “which wouldn't have happened in my band, because it would have been a co-directing thing. So I feel like as far as a full artistic vision goes - good or bad, it could suck! - now I want to be in charge of the whole thing. I don't want to really, like, share.”
She reluctantly accepts a need to engage in the promotional side of the business, “though it is annoying, sometimes. But it is part of the whole thing. If I want to get my music out there, this presence is really important. So I try not to not to grumble about it. Because if you're not making like top 40 music, how are people going to find out about your music?”
At least with Instagram, she’s determined to have a laugh with it: “I've tried to curate my Instagram in a way where it is 100% authentic. It is 100% me. So whatever you see on there, if it's lame, it's my fault,” she says with a laugh.
I get a preview of the latest of her surreal Insta Story videos, “shot at the Queen's tennis centre. We opened for Death Cab For Cutie there a couple weeks ago. And that's where Wes Anderson shot part of the Royal Tennenbaums. Then we had these rabbit costumes...”
In the span of her career, the 43 year old reflects she seen the industry and environment both for artists and audiences shift. She herself had to distance herself from Ryan Adams who had worked on 'The Voyager' and the early stages of the current album, after allegations were made against him of sexual manipulative behaviour.
“I think it's evolving and I appreciate the dialogue,” Lewis says. “I was one of fewer women on the road when I started. Now there are way more women out there. But there's still those moments. Like, this camera guy at this festival I played. I wanted the cameras to be in my aesthetic. So I go back to talk to him with the set list and he just rolled his eyes from the moment I opened my mouth. I could tell he didn't want to do it. But I've learned over the years, to just not bat an eye, and just be patient, and get exactly what I fucking want. But you still feel those moments of resistance.”
While she does joke that becoming an “icon” of any kind usually implies “you’re kind of old”, she has no doubt of the importance of inspiring the next generation: “When I saw my first proper concert, on my own, without my mum, it was The Cure and PIXIES were opening. I must have been 11 or 12. And I saw Kim Deal on stage playing bass. She was maybe the first woman I'd ever seen playing an instrument. And that really resonated with me.”
That’s not to say she fully embraces role model status: “I never think of myself in a leadership context. I'm trying to just be myself. I'm not trying to be perfect. I try to be responsible with what I say. But sometimes, I talk shit,” she says with a wry smile.
Were things more wild back in the day?
“I went to a bunch of Grateful Dead shows as a kid. And like the even the parking lot was wild. You know? I mean, it was like drug culture. That was the 90s. We still have fun. Although it's like pretty rated PG-13. I mean, I've never been invited to an orgy. So I don't know. I'm trying to be less of a square…”
While she might not literally be taking things day by day - “I’m a hippie but that big of a hippie that much of a hippie” - there’s a resistance to overengineering her forward path: “I don't have goals ever. I've got like, song ideas. I've got 10 or 12 songs I'm just starting. Like the kombucha thing, you’ve got to let it ferment.”
And there’s also a sense that having pretty much experienced it all, from child-acting to band life to solo artist, playing all festivals from Glastonbury to Coachella, becoming artistic director of all her output, she can take the time to relish in this moment.
The week previous she was at Latitude: “I love Latitude. Our set was so fun. But then afterwards, we got stoned and went out into the crowd to watch Khruangbin, which was the best festival sets I've seen since like, Tame Impala at Coachella. It was absolutely dancey. We were like we found ourselves in the middle of like a steampunk 30th birthday party where everyone was dressed up and dancing around us. And we were like, this is amazing.”
Later that week, watching her delight, charm and coax her summer’s evening London crowd into being wrapped around her finger as pink and blue balloons filled the air, I saw that this is a Jenny Lewis who’s survived significant turbulence in her life, faced her demons and gone from strength to strength as an artist as a result - and now gets to enjoy the pink and blue-hued view.
Does she have any advice for young women looking to for the success she has enjoyed?
“I'd say: wear what you want. Sing what you feel. Write what you know. Stand flat-footed. Don't take no shit.”
Wise words, well said.

Harbor Café Batanes Island in the Philippines
I was recently on the wild, remote, and incredibly beautiful island of Batanes, which sits so far north of the mainland Philippines that it’s out there in the middle of the vast sea all by itself, closer to Taiwan than it is to its own nation. It was quite an experience, as I landed in perfect blissful sunshine but within one day, we were blasted by a tropical storm that proved challenging as I got caught in a mudslide and stranded in the country, and then managed to fly out just in time before a super typhoon descends on the island.
But within those few short days, I completely fell in love with Batanes, which is like a combination of the Scottish Coast, Novia Scotia, northern California, and, oh yeah, just a little but of the Philippines sprinkled in. I also fell in love with the people, as the local Batanes folk are so warm, friendly, accommodating, and even more super laid back than the already-mellow and fun-loving Filipinos.
Part of the charm of Batanes is that the main town (and only sizable town), Basco, is so small that you can just walk around within half an hour or so, saying hi to your new neighbors and seeing all it has to offer. In fact, about 8,000 of the island’s total 18,000 residents live in Basco!
That stands true for restaurants, too. There are plenty of little local Filipino-style indoor-outdoor kitchens and simple eateries with a few tables lined up, but when it comes to actual restaurants, you can count them on one hand.
But Harbour Café is one of the fun and funkiest, and definitely worth checking out. Located right off the National Highway that mirrors the coastline as it gently enters into Basco proper, the Harbour Café sits on the corner of a smaller road that drops down to the rocky industrialized shore.

The Café itself is a simple building, with most of the seating in long picnic-like tables located on their back deck, open to the elements except for a covered roof. I don’t even remember a single fan!
But the view is killer – of the bay in Batanes and just enough of a peak across to the rolling green hills and the iconic lighthouse that sits atop them.
The Harbour Café also has a tiny closed-in room, where you can order baked goods to go and where they make their coffee from one of Batanes’ only real espresso machines. (The cappuccinos were great but damn expensive – like $4 USD! – probably because everything needs to be imported to the island).
But the artwork and local feel is the highlight of the Harbour Café, as they have colorful and dynamic murals wrapping their building, as well as paintings, jewelry, and other exhibits by local artists. It’s a fantastic way to expose tourists (both foreigner and Filipino) to the indigenous culture of Batanes that is still very much living and vibrant today.
I was also ecstatic to get a few ice cold beers at the Harbour Café, and tried several items off of their limited but hearty menu (again, hard to get a huge variety there on the island). I tried the pasta, lobster (good but not worth it for the price and portion size, although I’m a Maine lobster snob), and a fried pork dish that Filipinos love but is way too rich for me.
In all, Harbour Café should be a vital part of any traveler’s experience when visiting Breathtaking Batanes!

15 Dorm Room Essentials That Should Be on Every College Student’s Shopping List
SolStock/iStock
Packing for your first year at school can be a chaotic experience. You want to make sure you—or, as the case may be, your kid—have all the dorm room essentials. But pack too much and it could become a cluttered mess of unnecessary decor and unused furniture. Plus, that (very) limited square footage will make it even harder to keep everything organized.
While it may be tempting to stop by your favorite home goods retailer and throw anything that catches your eye into your cart, this can create a massive headache on move-in day. Don’t panic: Dorm room shopping can be strategic!
The best approach is to go into it with a checklist of necessities to deck out your home away from home. Here are our top picks for the must-have dorm room essentials you should add to your shopping list.
1. Printed comforter set No dorm room is complete without a printed comforter set.
target.com
Transform your dorm into a place of your own by adding a cozy comforter. The bright print on this comforter set ($47.49, target.com) can help spruce up any drab room, and you can easily mix and match your decor to complement the design. A set made from a soft and lightweight fabric will provide maximum comfort all semester.
2. Laundry bag Carry your dirty clothes in style with this striped laundry bag.
ikea.com
Whether you’re transporting your dirty clothes home for the weekend (sorry, Mom and Dad) or using campus facilities, you’ll need a sturdy laundry bag. Not only does this chic version ($9.99, ikea.com) boast thick handles to haul your load, it can also be folded and stored away.
3. Mesh shower caddy This shower caddy features a mesh bottom to drain liquid and prevent mildew.
target.com
Unless you’re blessed with a private bathroom in your dorm, odds are you’ll have to tote your products to and from the communal showers. A mesh shower caddy ($7.99, target.com) will hold your shampoo and conditioner in place and quickly drain water through the bottom. The large interior pocket is the perfect spot to carry your towel—and don’t forget your shower shoes!
4. Velvet hangers Sleek velvet hangers also clear extra space in your closet.
amazon.com
Make the most of that tight closet space by investing in velvet hangers ($20.86, amazon.com). These hangers feature a velour material and notched shoulders, which prevent clothes from slipping, and their slim and sleek design allows you to maximize space in your tiny dorm wardrobe. The cherry on top? The hangers are top-rated with over 4,000 positive reviews.
5. Metal shelving unit Each wire shelf on this unit holds up to 250 pounds.
amazon.com
Your college will likely supply you with a desk and dresser, but what if you need more storage? Take advantage of the vertical space in your dorm and stack snacks, textbooks, small appliances, and more on this handy three-shelf unit ($19.97, amazon.com). You can easily adjust the height of the shelves to fit your needs, and if the unit’s steel wires cramp your style, freshen the look with colorful decorative bins (more on that below).
6. Fabric storage bin These fabric bins are perfect for storing books, clothes, and snacks.
target.com
Store your stuff in these wallet-friendly fabric bins ($4.00 each, target.com). Their lightweight and collapsible design allows for easy storage when they’re not in use. Bonus: They’re available in over 20 colors to match your decor and help turn your new living quarters into a Pinterest-worthy place.
7. Desk mirror Avoid crowded communal bathrooms by using a desk mirror.
ikea.com
Moving into a dorm means sacrificing space and privacy—even in the bathroom. Instead of fighting for mirror space in the morning, get ready in your room by using a desk mirror ($4.99, ikea.com). This stainless-steel mirror won’t take up precious desk space, and you won’t have to wait in a line to brush your hair in the communal bathroom.
8. Mattress topper Upgrade your mattress by adding a plush topper.
ikea.com
Most dorm rooms provide a standard mattress, but the options are notoriously stiff and uncomfortable. If you want to get the best sleep before your exams, consider purchasing a mattress topper ($69.99, ikea.com). This topper is filled with memory foam, which molds to your body for full relaxation, whether you’re catching up on sleep or binge-watching “Game of Thrones.”
9. Mattress pad Use a mattress pad to protect your sheets from leftover grime.
amazon.com
Dorm room mattresses are reused year after year, so thinking about the number of students who have slept on your mattress might gross you out a little (or a lot). You’ll likely want a layer between your sheets and your mattress, beyond the mattress topper. This mattress pad ($19.99, amazon.com) is the perfect solution. It’s quilted for added comfort and will protect your sheets from the germs built up on your college-issued cushion.
10. Bath wrap This stylish bath wrap is available in four different prints.
target.com
There’s a good chance you’ll run into a friend or two along the way from the shower to your dorm room. Protect yourself from an accidental slip with this bath wrap ($9.49, target.com). It features an elastic band with a hook and latch closure to ensure the wrap stays firmly where it belongs.
11. Hanging shoe organizer Store up to 12 pairs of shoes in this hanging organizer.
ikea.com
Wondering how you’ll fit your entire shoe collection in a cramped dorm closet? This hanging shoe organizer ($5.99, ikea.com) is a must-have. It holds up to 12 pairs of kicks while taking up minimal closet space. And don’t be afraid to get creative and use it to store other items like hats, scarves, and sunglasses.
12. Surge-protector power strips Ditch hazardous extension cords for this surge-protector power strip.
amazon.com
These surge-protector power strips ($10.99, amazon.com) are often overlooked on most checklists, but without them, your electronics might be in harm’s way. Not only do these power strips protect your microwave, fridge, TV, and more from a possible power surge, but they also add more outlets to your room.
13. Under-bed storage box Keep extra items out of sight by storing them under the bed.
ikea.com
The trick to making the most out of your dorm room is finding creative places to store your stuff. A hidden gem for storage is under your bed. Use an under-bed storage box ($29.99, ikea.com) to store extra pillows and blankets. Or, store your heavy winter clothes under the bed and swap them out when the temperature drops.
14. No-lid trash can Every dorm room needs a sturdy trash can.
target.com
After late-night pizza orders and ramen feasts, you’ll collect a good amount of garbage. This no-lid trash can ($2.99, target.com) will save your room from being swallowed by a mountain of waste. It’s durable enough to combat even the funkiest smells and easy to clean in case something spills.
15. Jersey sheet set Line your mattress with sheets as soft as your favorite t-shirt.
amazon.com
No matter how late you stay up studying or hanging out with friends, you’ll eventually need to catch up on your sleep. Make sure that shut-eye is as restful as possible by turning your bed into an ultrasnug sleeping haven. This jersey sheet set ($34.99, amazon.com) feels like napping on your favorite T-shirt—and it doesn’t get much cozier than that.
