I just. I don’t really want to keep talking about it, but I have to get these feelings out because the more I think about Somerton’s excuses video the angrier I get, ESPECIALLY given his insistence in the video that there isn’t a real community within LGBTQ spaces—specifically this quote; “We wanted it to be a channel where every queer person could feel welcomed... And we failed at that. That is something that, in hindsight, I think is impossible to create.”*
Because wow! Aren’t you the one who called Becky Albertalli, a bisexual woman, straight ?? Aren’t you the one who has consistently stolen queer and lgbtq people’s work as your own , profiting off of their labor and research and time? Aren’t you the one who sicced your fan base on smaller creators who noticed your plagiarism??? Aren’t YOU the one who LIED blatantly about lesbians “historically having it easier” than gay men ?? That LIED about Radclyffe Hall’s book being banned and destroyed???? What was it you said?? That she got to go on with “her merry little life”???
Fuck you. How dare you.
How dare you say there is no community, no safe space for all of us, when you have literally done NOTHING but maliciously and consistently stolen from, lied to, manipulated, and put down and bullied the community.
You have done nothing but try to break apart and put down your lgbtq siblings, so of course you believe that solidarity, safety, and intersectionality within our community is not something that can exist.
There are lgbtq people who are actively working to make those spaces, where everyone feels welcomed, but you clearly see yourself as being above that, above collaboration and community, above listening to other’s experiences.
You only think that a space where all queer and lgbtq people are welcomed and feel safe is impossible because your goal was never to carve out that space. It was to make money and take advantage of the people who looked up to you.
You think it’s impossible because you never once thought about the people you were stealing from, never once cared about the community, our history, the activism of our elders and all they did, never thought about how your actions and lies would hurt the community.
Stop making excuses and lying. Be fucking better.

Ok so like obviously thinking too hard about Roman is like hovering my hand above a stove flame but. succession was so crazy for making its most provocative sardonic driven-by-chaos most clandestinely traumatized character the one who, out of anyone, expresses the strongest desire for love and connection . like roman has said some of the most deplorable things in the show’s runtime but yet he is the Only one who really declares his love with his actions (pastries for Kendall) and says plainly with words -- PLAIN SPEAK!! WITHOUT METAPHOR OR CODED LANGUAGE -- that he wants to communicate with his siblings and their feelings in a healthy way. it’s like all the tormented energy he has about sex redirects itself into a genuinely earnest need to express affection. and yet he is so impish and deplorable. it’s like he’s exhausted by his own cynicism. it’s like he is the most consistently self-aware character in the show and having that distanced perspective makes him distinctly aware of how Odd his family is, how Odd that they can’t love each other right, how Odd that it is when he’s not allowed to express love if it’s not through sex or violence. What kind of dynamic do you think Thomas and Oliver have? Both tank engines are mascots of their respective branchlines, both run a push-pull service, and have coaches with names -- seems ripe for story potential!
I reckon they'd either love each other or hate each other, lol. Usually we as a fandom focus on the antagonism we suppose Thomas and Duck would have. But while I'm sure those two just don't "get" each other and are privately kinda mutually judgmental, I think they also just... stay out of each other's way.
Oliver, though. He made such a big splash when he arrived — the big engines were all fawning over him, a mere tank engine, lolllll — can you imagine what a funhouse-mirror world Thomas would have felt he was in, if he overnighted even once at Tidmouth during this period? — and TVS, reasonably I think, characterizes Thomas as being so suspicious of new tank engines. So I think Oliver really would just drive Thomas bonkers. If Thomas can get into a jealous tizzy over, like, friggin' Stanley, I don't know how Oliver would have failed to made Thomas (Great Western) green with jealousy.
Honestly, in Thomas's frames, I'd feel insecure. Oliver became famous for fleeing the braying diesel hounds of the B.R. all the way across the mainland and making a heroic escape to Sodor. Thomas (who at this point hadn't even left his safe, quaint little island for over 50 years) became famous for... leaving his guard behind and throwing a snowplough tantrum. Like. They are not the same. 😅
But, if Thomas can handle the major mid-life crisis I suspect Oliver's arrival kicked off for him without melting down, then I can also see the two just vibing. They have enough in common to feel competitive or to simply hit it off. They're both sociable and hasty and cheeky. Furthermore, the balance of respect might be restored because, while Oliver is more dashing, Thomas is definitely the leadership-y one and I don't think Oliver poses the slightest threat to that. Oliver just wants to live his life and have fun. He works very happily under Duck (who tbh I can see sometimes being a bit overbearing and fussy), he ain't in no way going to go getting under Thomas's wheels.
It might be fun if stormy weather/collapsed track/line repairs reduced trains on the Little Western for a while so Oliver is sent to the Ffarquhar to spot for one of the other engines. I feel like Oliver might be a bit like a bull in a china shop on that little line... Toby would get tired just watching him zoom around and terrorize the coaches, while all the other engines would feel pleasantly sedate and responsible by comparison. Thomas would develop a Pavlovian cringe every time Terence or Bertie greeted him with a shit-eating grin coz he knows they're about to congratulate him on what a fine job he's doing keeping order on his line (i.e., they're about to tell him the latest disaster Oliver caused). One day for Reasons Oliver has to take some coaches that aren't push-pull fitted and when he runs round the train (how annoying!) he forgets to get coupled and storms off down the line without them. Thomas would be at the junction venting about what a headache and a pest Oliver is. Gordon and Henry are shaking with laughter and with the feeling that this is just Sodor Karma (belatedly) at work. Back at Tidmouth Duck is raising exactly one eyebrow and saying Oliver has only ever had one incident on his line (unsaid: too bad for Thomas but some of us are Built Different). Daisy is confused when she returns from the Works and even Annie and Clarabel join in the loud cheers that greet her arrival.

Ok I recently watched the first 6 movies and Amanda is like, clearly a victim who who gets stockholmed into working with Jigsaw and vents her powerlessness into unwinnable traps. Whereas Hoffman gets roped into it and is just like “yeah murder is sick as hell,” as he just straight up murders people both before and after working with Jigsaw. They’re both like funhouse mirror versions of Jigsaw but without his actual ideology (at least as of saw 3, Amanda seems more like a True Believer in 2). Whereas Amanda copes through violence (like Jigsaw’s backstory/motivation), Hoffman just gets off on suffering (also like Jigsaw lol). Anyway yeah there’s no innocent characters in the series obviously but it’s funny to see people so predictably treat the men and women so differently
ITS SOOO TRANSPARENT misogyny really is never not rotting fandoms to their cores its so jarring when its so obvious like this 😭 its honestly so??? funny. i guess? the way amanda is canonically treated in comparison to hoffman is so starkly different as well... like hoffman isnt tested once (the shotgun chair truly was nothint) meanwhile amanda is tested time and again, put in danger, triggered, puts everything on the line for john.. mermaids
mermaids are the umbrella magical race term for both of them, but sirens get their own seat in the ruling council (much like gavin explained how succubi and incubi get their own seats).
mermaids are NOT shifters, but fall more into the spectrum of the vampire’s relationship with magic.
they mainly live in the water, but there are a couple different kinds that live in more amphibious environments, preferring to sun themselves on rocks instead of floating in a reef. mermaids have a call like sirens, but it’s only to attract mates and prey (most of the time, their calls are used ONLY for mates as they’re great hunters)
taking inspo from h2o, best mermaid show you can be turned, tho the process is tedious and quite painful. many don’t go down this route. empowered people wishing to be turned often lose all of their powers, and if they don’t, it’s a mere fraction of what they used to have. for example; a fire elemental becomes a mermaid and loses most of their magic. however, they can warm the water around them and are immune to any underwater vents or volcanos. if an unempowered person turns, they only gain better eyesight and hearing.
to transport a mermaid is similar to transporting aquatic life. this is why the council has their meetings once a year to discuss mermaid-specific issues.
sirens
sirens are shifters! the turning process is far less painful and lengthy than a mermaids. they align more with a wolf shifter’s relationship with magic. able to learn more and empowered people always keep their magic.
a siren’s call is the most dangerous thing about them. they are known to lure whomever for whatever they want. often times sirens are compared to sex demons, since their calls tend to be more lust driven than anything else.
when an unempowered person is turned, they gain better hearing and eyesight, and exceptional illusory beauty. essentially, when they use their call, a person that answers will see their desired partner or “type” or “dream person”. this is similar to sex demons, but sirens don’t physically change themselves. think of it as a funhouse mirror. you, yourself aren’t changed, but the mirror has been warped to change your appearance. that’s illusory beauty. it’s only on when they use their call, otherwise a siren appears as they are normally.
sirens live on land only, but many live in costal cities, as they are particularly fond of the ocean. a water elemental siren may spend more time in the ocean or take a job involving the beach/water.
can sirens and mermaids intermarry and reproduce?
yes! sirens are mermaids, but mermaids aren’t sirens. however, their DNA is similar enough that many half-siren half-mermaid children have been born over the years.
it’s difficult to be in a relationship with each other, as one is water-only, and the other land-only. research has been done to try and shift a mermaid, but results have been disappointing.
how long do they live?
mermaids and sirens are not immortal, contrary to popular belief.
they have an above average lifespan, with mermaids averaging 200 years and sirens living an extra 10 years (data on sirens has been little).
do these races face discrimination?
yes. sirens in particular are always compared to sex demons, and their reputation for luring in people has only amplified that. most sirens don’t use their call for evil, and puberty is an especially hard time for them. calls from sirens in puberty are random and happen uncontrollably. many sirens have been bullied due to their magical race and are viewed with the same disdain as demons. many go incognito and suppress their auras to avoid any potential problems.

Time was a blurry thing since the moment she powered on in that glass box, but Bonnet was rather sure much of it had passed. Her poor condition if anything was evidence of it, but when her eyes adjusted she could tell she was being displayed as some sort of museum piece. No that wouldn't do at all, Bonnet hated boxes but it wasn’t just that. If she was here then where were Funfred and Bonbon?
It took her what felt like an hour to lift the glass up high enough to wiggle her way out, when the realization that throwing herself in a panic against the walls wouldn’t work, but not as long to find her way to a familiar comfort. The ventilation was much more big then she was used to but she knew she’d learn the paths with time. It took an entire week to find thread and cloth to patch up and cover the holes in her body. Then after another week of struggling to pull herself through the vents, and fretting over where her family friends might have ended up-
Bonnet found herself in the vent of one of the many areas she’d yet to explore, a Funhouse? Finally an attraction, she’d seen a few at this point, with some style around here.

Ashley Graham, America's sweetheart, stood on the gilded balcony, the cheers of adoring fans echoing up from the red carpet below. Fear clung to her skin like a second layer of mascara. One moment, she was smiling graciously, waving at the crowd, the next, her hand was a skeletal claw reaching out to a distorted, disembodied head floating in the air. The screams intensified, but were they real or figments of a warped reality?
Panic threatened to suffocate her. She stumbled back, seeking refuge in the opulent hotel room. But the plush furniture morphed into fleshy tendrils, the walls pulsed with sickly light, and a monstrous spider crawled out of the air vent, its eyes glowing with malevolent intelligence.
Ashley gasped, tears blurring her vision. The lines between nightmare and reality were gone. Was she hallucinating, or was this the new horrifying norm?
Suddenly, a voice cut through the chaos. Calm, grounded, familiar. It was her friend, the tech genius Maya, the only one who seemed unaffected by the Glitchscape. Maya appeared, not warped or distorted, but solid and real, her phone screen glowing with a steady, white light.
"Ash, focus on me," Maya's voice was an anchor in the storm. "This is a digital infestation, a virus rewriting code, including your perception. Don't trust what you see, trust what you feel."
Ashley closed her eyes, desperately trying to grasp onto Maya's words. She felt the coolness of the marble floor beneath her bare feet, the silkiness of her dress against her skin. It was real, a touchstone in the swirling chaos.

like i don't go into detail about some of the specifics because fucking hell why would i want to? i don't owe anybody that. so i think probably most people don't know aside from my close friends and maybe people who read my vent posts obsessively (rhetorical device! i hope that doesnt happen) that the level of abuse i experienced was like, practically "you could go on talk shows" bad. (or so i'm told. remember, i was raised like this, i have no sense of normal anymore.) it was genuinely fucking nuts. this is why i am so unbelievably neurotic sometimes.
and like, it's important to me to hold onto the fact that it was insane, it was not even remotely close to normal, the level of violence there was like, unhinged. i was attenuated to this shit for so long and walking around with so much amnesia and gaslit so badly that i just have no sense of scale anymore, so what other people tell me is important, and i am repeatedly told "that's unspeakably horrific, lestat!" so i can't and shouldn't try to sit here and say it's a normal experience.
but like....the EXPERIENCE not being normal shouldn't reflect on ME, that's not fair. i didn't do anything wrong. i may have grown up in some kind of true crime funhouse family but that does not make ME a weirdo. i just have ptsd, and DID. which is normal, in that that is the normal response to that fucking nightmare household. i'm not from space, i'm just from an abusive childhood. i'm still a person like anyone else. we all have our hard knocks.
like, i make a big deal out of this but it can feel very othering at the best of times when i've got people who care and are sensitive to this stuff telling me "there is nothing which inherently separates you from anyone else." having someone like parrot the kind of negative "you're a freak and can't be part of normal society anymore" shit that ptsd has put in my brain is NOT pleasant. i wish people thought more.

I want to talk about gratitude. Especially about our current situation. People are talking about how 2020 is the worst year ever. Covid-19, protests, WW3 even though it didn’t happen, celebrities deaths. It’s like God accidentally manifested his vent journal onto earth. But to say this, I have to be the sore dick that sticks out, because I feel like most of these people are exaggerating. 2020? Worst year ever? Do you even know what happened back then? When death started gangbanging people with the bubonic plague? WW1 shellshocking soldiers to a thousand yard stare? WW2 teaching german art schools not to reject any artists ever again? The homosapiens had it bad too, predators from all corners were biting their chimp ass back to single-celled microbes. And the spanish flu? The flu that started a sneezing and coughing contest outside Walt’s Disney’s house? (Yes, that’s the worse part, no mickey mouse funhouse, how’s that for misery?) and I’m not saying the people complaining are snowflakes, I’m just saying that to understand that our current situation? Is not that really bad if you think about it. Of course, some people have it worse than others but gratitude, it’s the only way that can make us happy in a time like this.

The Todd in Shadows video on Somerton makes me SO much angrier than Hbomberguy’s SOLELY b/c while Hbomb’s covers the terrible impact of his plagiarism and its terrible, Todd’s has more actual clips of Somerton’s stupid stupid condescending cadence where he’s just SMUGLY LYING about all sorts of bullshit that’s usually extremely self-congratulatory OR misogynistic and it makes me want to fuckin vomit.

#sometimes i get really really ridiculously bitter and jealous of anyone who's successfully gotten through a college program#i don't know if I've let myself properly grieve for the lost time and resources and opportunities#and honestly i don't know if I'll ever even be able to do the certification program i want for library technical assistant#I'm so angry that my adhd was never caught in time. i was diagnosed at 26. after failing out twice#sometimes i wish i could go back in time and insist to my 2008 self that they go get tested for it and get help#instead of getting caught in a fractal funhouse of downward spirals#/vent post
