Moderna is considering raising the price of its COVID-19 vaccine by over 400 percent—from $26 per dose to between $110 and $130 per dose—according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.
Ars has reached out to Moderna for comment but has not yet received a response. The plan, if realized, would match the previously announced price hike for Pfizer-BioNTech's rival COVID-19 vaccine.
The Journal spoke with Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel at the JP Morgan Healthcare Conference in San Francisco Monday, who said of the 400 percent price hike: "I would think this type of pricing is consistent with the value.”
Until now, the mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech have been purchased by the government and offered to Americans for free. In the latest federal contract from July, Moderna's updated booster shot cost the government $26 per dose, up from $15–$16 per dose in earlier supply contracts, the Journal notes. Similarly, the government paid a little over $30 per dose for Pfizer-BioNTech's vaccine this past summer, up from $19.50 per dose in contracts from 2020.
But now that the federal government is backing away from distributing the vaccines, their makers are moving to the commercial market—with price adjustments.
Financial analysts had previously anticipated Pfizer would set the commercial price for its vaccine at just $50 per dose but were taken aback in October when Pfizer announced plans of a price between $110 and $130. Analysts then anticipated that Pfizer's price would push Moderna and other vaccine makers to follow suit, which appears to be happening now.
Lawmakers have already lambasted Pfizer for the steep increase. In a letter sent last month to Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla, Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Peter Welch (D-Vt.) called the price hike "pure and deadly greed" and accused the company of "unseemly profiteering."
"We urge you to back off from your proposed price increases and ensure COVID-19 vaccines are reasonably priced and accessible to people across the United States," they wrote.
The revelation that Moderna may match Pfizer's price increase comes just a day after Moderna announced that its COVID-19 vaccine sales in 2022 totaled approximately $18.4 billion. "We enter 2023 in a great position, with significant momentum across our clinical pipeline, a highly energized team and a strong balance sheet of over $18 billion of cash and cash equivalents," Moderna's Bancel said in a press release Monday. Moderna also noted in the release that it expects to make a minimum of $5 billion in COVID-19 vaccine sales in 2023.

Got a Pfizer shot on... Tuesday? Started reacting badly late Thursday. It is now Saturday afternoon and I am only just barely beginning to feel vaguely human again

a little personal life update for those who care: had covid at the beginning of the month, am now covid-free but am having heart palpitations (skipped/ectopic heartbeats) so have been in-and-out of the hospital seeing what's what. i'm now wearing a heart monitor for the next 24 hours and will get more information in the next 1.5 weeks. got a prescription for propranolol in the meantime, so we'll see how it goes.
#it sucks. i'll go through periods where i'll get several ectopic beats a minute#and then periods where i'll only get a couple an hour#everything i've heard says that it's nothing immediately dangerous but it feels very unpleasant and triggers my anxiety something awful#fuck covid dude. i had a mild case and no pre-existing heart conditions and now i might have to go on heart medication long term#i'm just hoping i don't need surgery#personal#had two doses of pfizer last year if anyone's curious

Got 2nd booster shot yesterday (4th overall), and damn, not since the first shot did i feel those side effects that intense.
Literally like making a choice between laying in bed all day (which makes all my blood turn to jelly and causes headache) or walking around at least even though my bones and muscles ache so...
#but still. the pandemic is pandemic and im actually really happy that my country allowed those fourth shots#we've got some numbers rising (our fourth wave is building) so. the mandatory masks are back. plus - the new boosters were bought#tbh can i show off a bit bc last day when i got the vacc i just got reminded what a great response my country has had to the pandemic#like - lockdowns for two months with everyone (over18) being paid two and a half months minimal pay#all the vaccinations being free. even the expensive ones like Pfizer#i mean hell - in 2020 when they realized the danger of anti-vaxers they countered with a lottery in which all who'd get two shots would ent#er. the prizes being - an apartment. and two cars (yeah we stole the idea from russia it was still cool)#(like you could only enter the lottery if you were from one of cities with over a million citizens so i couldnt. but how cool is that)#and im sure so many more things. two covid hospitals were built (my grandma stayed in one of them and said they were amazing. so modern)#all while a fucking regime change was happening and the scumpiest politicians were leaving the country with all its money#and they and their assets were hunted down (we still are waiting for the history-defining lawsuits against them)#its just. its so fucking good that western chokehold upon us is over. their puppets if not gone then rendered impotent#theyve always made us feel afraid we wouldnt survive without their investments#but like man - despite despite despite we're thriving#i wish to all the countries - the western empire is crumbling. let it die soon for us all to live in the world without it)

Writing plans for DnD campaigns for fun and accidentally wrote one that's just actual reality, but with werewolves.
