I was planning to see Florence Pugh’s new film “Don’t Worry Darling”. When I first saw the trailer it looked intriguing.
But since then there’s been a lot of behind the scenes gossip on the web with a “he said/she said” spat between director Olivia Wilde and its former star Shia Leboeuf. I began to have doubts.
Then I decided to get more info on the plot.
Now I’ve discovered it’s a new spin on “The Stepford Wives” (1975) where misogynistic husbands enslave their wives in a fantasy world to reassert their manly role in their marriage.
In the 1975, the husbands had to actually kill their wives and replace them with robots. DWD apparently replaced murder with a VR simulation.
“The Stepford Wives” was released early during the Women’s Rights movement and its premise seemed on target at the time (if far fetched). Frank Oz reboot of TSW in 2004 starring Nicole Kidman and Bette Milder. I saw it and it was a nonsensical mess. And irrelevant (with wives dispensing money out if their mouths like an ATM!?!)
Whatever Olivia Wilde is attempting to say about women and men in the 21th Century, the BTS drama hints at greater problems with the film.
I’ve already struck “Don’t Worry Darling” off of my 2022 “Must-See-Movie-List”.
