Alia Vox publica un álbum que reúne antiguas grabaciones de Jordi Savall con obras contemporáneas escritas a partir de ellas
Cuenta Diego Fernández Magdaleno (Medina de Rioseco, 1971) la fascinación adolescente por Jordi Savall y sus discos. De aquello, alimentado por la memoria del pianista ya adulto y consagrado (Premio Nacional de Música en 2010), nació este proyecto que ahora, más de una década después de su realización, se publica en formato CD.
La idea era simple: encargar a una serie de compositores españoles obras inspiradas en piezas del anchísimo repertorio de los discos del violagambista español. El proyecto se estrenó en París el 21 de febrero de 2012. Montserrat Figueras había muerto tres meses antes, así que su presencia se aprecia de forma considerable en las obras escogidas y glosadas. Fernández Magdaleno acabó grabando las piezas en el verano de 2015, pero esos registros parecieron congelados durante casi una década hasta plasmarse finalmente en este doble álbum que publica el sello de Savall.
Fueron en total catorce cortes originales (Dowland, Cabezón por dos veces, Vermell por tres, Milán, Couperin por dos, Sainte Colombe, Alfonso X, Van Ghizeghem, Sibila, Marais), que se reproducen aquí seguidos de las obras contemporáneas, encargadas por el pianista vallisoletano a catorce músicos bien diferentes: José María García Laborda (1946), Teresa Catalán (1951), Jesús Legido (1943), Carlos Cruz de Castro (1941), Francisco García Álvarez (1959), Armand Grèbol (1958), Claudio Prieto (1934-2015), Benet Casablancas (1956), Carles Guinovart (1941), Tomás Marco (1942), Albert Sardà (1943), Dolores Serrano (1967), Carme Fernández-Vidal (1970) y Josep Soler (1935).
El resultado es poliédrico, ya que los estilos de las obras nuevas son muy diversos: algunos optaron por hacer variaciones en que la pieza de origen es perfectamente identificable, otros buscaron una mayor abstracción; hubo quien pareció acercarse a las formas de la música original y quien prefirió honrarla alejándose de ella. Un homenaje en cualquier caso de admiración y memoria.

SM Cares launched Emergency Preparedness Forum, making PWDs, Seniors disaster-ready

In celebration of National Disaster Resilience Month, SM Cares recently launched this year’s Emergency Preparedness Forum for senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs). The first of eight forums was held last July 5, Wednesday, at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall in Pasay City.

Prior to the forum, a pledge of commitment signing was held between SM Supermalls and its partner organizations. Present at the signing were SM Supermalls Senior Vice President Engr. Bien C. Mateo, Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Administrator Usec. Ariel Nepomuceno, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Acting Asst. General Manager Atty. Victor Trinidad, National Commission of Senior Citizens Chairperson Atty. Franklin M. Quijano, and National Council on Disability Affairs Executive Director Joniro F. Fredejas.
Meanwhile, Senators Risa Hontiveros and Loren Legarda, as well as Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Renato Solidum, gave special video messages addressed to the forum’s attendees.
Aside from being signatories, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) OIC Administrator Dr. Esperanza O. Cayanan, Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) Senior Supervising Science Research Specialist Jeffrey S. Perez, and University of the Philippines Resilience Institute Executive Director Dr. Mahar Lagmay shared their insights and observations in a panel discussion on understanding natural hazards, such as earthquakes, floods, and volcanic eruptions, and how to prepare for such situations.
Disaster Management Specialist, Emergency Medical Technician, and Wilderness Search and Rescue Philippines Instructor Gerard “Doki” Natividad was also invited to share survival tips and tricks tailored to the needs of the attendees.

Participants in the forum were provided an SM Emergency Pack, which consists of an emergency string bag, a 4mm rope, an emergency blanket, a whistle with lanyard, a mini-flashlight, and a survival tool card. Earthquake and flood simulators were also prepared by PAGASA and DOST to add to the participants’ learning experience.

“In preparing for emergencies and calamities, SM Cares believes that no one should be left behind. That is what inspires us to continue mounting this Emergency Preparedness Forum,” said Mateo. “Our goal is to empower our senior citizens and PWDs with the essential survival skills and know-how so that they will be ready for any circumstance.”
Since the forum first began in 2015, SM Cares has been able to provide training to 7,417 senior citizens and PWDs across the country since the forum’s conception, and was awarded Gold in 2020 and Silver in 2023 at the Public Relations Society of the Philippines’ annual Anvil Awards.
This initiative shows SM Cares’ support for the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly “SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being”, “SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities”, and “SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities”.
SM Cares is the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Supermalls, supporting initiatives focused on communities and the environment. Its advocacies include Programs for the Environment, Persons with Disabilities, Women & Breastfeeding Mothers, Children & Youth, Senior Citizens, and the SM Bike-friendly initiative.

Sunggod kunta ako. Pero anyway.
History writing is on the bottom of the list in this irrelevant town. But what follows, in the spirit of immortalization, is the vagueness of Maharlika Tribe's history.
This is not an attempt to change what's written. While I am sitting alone in this coffee shop, I will try to record what were heard from who are still living, in between bottles of Tanduay. Most of them are old, and exact dates are not very important to them. What matters to them is, Maharlika is still standing, older than me - even after years of trials.
In Dumga, it was said by Nong Rodel Taladro (Sitio Ilaya) that in around 1975 or 1976, Mr. Gil "Tay Junior" Casimero (Sitio Centro) and Mr. Eli Fradejas (+) (Sitio Ilawod) decided to start an ati-atihan tribe following their AWOL from the army. The name they chose was Vikings.
Previously, it was an affairs of the sitios in Dumga - between Centro and Tabok. In Tabok, there was a tribe called something like Red-whatever. It was then that they involved Punong Barangay Manuel "Tay Maning" Tamayo (+) (Sitio Centro) and others.
In a post of Ms. Anna Tamayo (Sitio Centro) in Facebook in January 21, 2023, the officers of Vikings were:

I grew up knowing that Maharlika used to be called Vikings. My mother said that because they were undefeated, they had to change the name to Maharlika. But in Anna's post, she said that, Vikings was changed to Maharlika in 1981 because Makato Parish Council (which no longer exists) banned foreign-sounding names. Also, she said that it was Mr. Piologo Tabernilla (+) (Poblacion) who gave the name Maharlika.
But according to Nong Rodel, Piologo chose the name The Living Skull. It didn't sound right so they sought the help of Mrs. Tarciana "Tati" Mationg (+) (Sitio Centro). He said that, in one of the books of Mr. Jesus "Tay Odoy" Raval (+) (Sitio Centro), Tati found the prescious word, Maharlika - a noble warrior, in our own Filipino language. Thus, who we became and who we remained to be.
That was the past. Several things happened. I remember Maharlika was never defeated except for that one time. I was in elementary. It was Tribu Timawa, in my memory. But to Nong Rodel and the rest, it was blurry, whom Maharlika lost. That was the time I remembered they stopped joining ati-atihan. Talk about panaad. But there probably was more to the story.
In 1999, I was in my freshman year in Science. I remember Mr. Hark Tesorero (Sitio Centro) talking to my mother, Mrs. Adelia Taluyo (+) (Sitio Centro) in our living room. He talked about reviving Maharlika. My mother would manage, he would design. Other Dumgahanons joined the cause. Nearing Christmas, they performed daigon for fund-raising. Other members and leaders returned, including the Casimero brothers. Tay Junior and Mr. Efren "Tay Ely" Casimero (Sitio Ilawod) led and danced, and Mr. Jose "Nong Joe" Casimero (+) (Sitio Ilaya), joined in the design. By 2000, Maharlika was back.
Why Hark chose my mother, I do not know. But it was a short-lived friendship. You see, Dumga used to be a relatively peaceful community. But in 2002, Hark's brother ran for Sangguniang Kabataan under the banner of then Mayor Wayne Malilay. My mother made the mistake of making me run for the same position, in the other party. Hence the start of a chaotic society - street lights and other projects were damaged, our house was battered with rocks (no TP or eggs). I got to say, the resentment and strong brotherhood of Tesorero brothers is admirable - the whole Tocol family, in fact.
The banner we design every year was from years back. It was made of plywood and wood, stronger now from layers of paint. It probably weighs fifty kilograms with all the added decorations. I was not exactly sure when it was made but my mother said, it was from way before 2000. It was probably really old. I remember Hark asking my mother if he could get the banner and handle Maharlika. By this time, Tay Maning was old and fragile and Maharlika remained in my mother's leadership. Further adding to injury, she would not concede. Nong Joe Casimero remained the sole designer of Maharlika until his death in 2019.
In 2004, Mrs. Vide Pamatian (Poblacion) asked my mother to sponsor Maharlika under Chowking Kalibo. This was the first serious chance of Maharlika to join Kalibo Ati-atihan - full expenses paid, including cycling shorts, would you belive? They all have said, Maharlika had a chance in winning in Kalibo but it was never attempted.
Maharlika became the first tribe to defeat Kabog and the first non-local to win the competition. Kabog never recovered since. Maharlika never won again, too.
Following the death of my mother, Nong Joe handled Maharlika. As of this writing, Mrs. Luchi "Nene" Torneo (Sitio Ilawod) handles the finances and her husband and banner-bearer, Mr. Ruben Torneo (Sitio Ilawod) officially handles the tribe. He attends meetings and other related activities.
Mr. Armando Taladro (Sitio Ilaya) handles the drums. The households of Nong Rodel, Mrs. Mila Bumagat and Torneo compound could only make 80 costumes per year which was a minimum really. They could probably finish 150 and the dancers just keep on coming, from all over Aklan - in Numancia, Tangalan and Nabas. The drummers are 50.
It is no longer between sitios Centro and Tabok. Even if I talk about panaad, every competition is always just about between Vikings and Maharlika. Of course we would have wanted that million bucks. But even if we didn't, we are not bitter, and we would join again. The feud would continue for generations and I would love to see it through, but nothing is forever.
Still, this banner will stand.

«Nadie roba adormideras en nuestros cultivos, esto no es marihuana»
Si hay un cultivo alternativo que centra todas las miradas en el campo, ese es el de adormideras. La fama de esta planta está ligada a su alto contenido en alcaloides obtenidos de su savia, lo que le hace ser la base de medicinas como la morfina, la tebaína o la codeína, pero también de drogas tan potentes como la heroína.
Los anestésicos más fuertes usados en medicina dependen de este cultivo, y agricultores como Manuel Fradejas lo siembran desde hace años para la industria farmacéutica. Fradejas asegura que sembrar este tipo de plantas no tiene demasiados inconvenientes, más allá de los propios de un cultivo de regadío. No obstante, apunta que cada vez es menos rentable, ya que el mercado está controlado por solo una empresa, dadas las circunstancias especiales del producto.
–Un cultivo como el de adormideras llamará mucho la atención. Y es que de esta planta salen opiáceos como la heroína o la morfina…
–Al principio sí que llamaba mucho la atención, pero como llevamos ya varios años plantando, la gente se ha acostumbrado. Empezamos a plantar en 1995 y lo dejamos en 2003, pero luego retomamos otra vez el cultivo hace tres años.
–¿Qué problemas y beneficios se puede encontrar una agricultor que siembre adormideras?
–Es una alternativa más para tener un cultivo de regadío. Los problemas pueden llegar, como en muchas explotaciones, si viene una primavera seca, porque esta planta necesita mucho agua. También el precio nos ha dado algún disgusto porque en vez de subirlo, lo han bajado. Además, hay un monopolio que complica todo un poco porque solo se puede sembrar esta planta mediante su control.
–Parece lógico que sea así, porque de esta planta se pueden sacar medicinas, pero también drogas…
–Está claro. Por eso, seguramente, exista este monopolio.
–¿Hay fuertes medidas de seguridad que rodeen a estos cultivos para evitar hurtos?
–La Guardia Civil sabe dónde están sembradas las parcelas, pero no hay robos porque para sacar droga de esta planta hay que llevar a cabo un proceso químico complicado. La adormidera no es como la marihuana, que se fuma la propia planta, esto es otra cosa. No he oído a nadie que se haya encontrado con robos en las tierras. Nunca ha habido problemas de esta clase y pensamos que es debido a que lleva una transformación bastante complicada.
–¿Y cuál es el protocolo que se debe cumplir para sembrar adormideras?
–Una empresa te proporciona la semilla, después hay un técnico que te asesora semanalmente de lo que tienes que hacer. A la hora de recoger, la cosechadora la ponen ellos y también el transporte. La verdad es que no tiene muchas complicaciones. La semilla es muy pequeñita, similar al azúcar. De hecho, echamos un kilo y 600 gramos de semilla por hectárea. La siembra es muy superficial y la nacida es un tanto delicada, eso sí.
–¿Es rentable para un agricultor sembrar adormideras?
–Antes lo era mucho más. Ahora, los beneficios se equiparan con el trigo porque no han movido los precios y los costes sí que se han subido.
–¿Recomendaría a los agricultores dispuestos a cambiar de cultivo sembrar adormideras?
–Depende qué tipo de tierra tengan. En terrenos arcillosos es muy complicado hacerlas crecer. Las tierras de páramo con regadío son las más adecuadas para ellas. Depende de muchos factores.

Alrededor de unas 3.000 personas se han concentrado en Velilla del Río Carrión para reivindicar la continuidad de la Central Térmica que Iberdrola tiene en la localidad y cuyo cierre, solicitado por la eléctrica, afectaría a los 80 trabajadores directos de la central y a unos 200 empleos indirectos.
La concentración estaba convocada por los vecinos de la comarca y a ella fueron invitados, tanto los propios vecinos, como los políticos de todas las formaciones, a los que se pidió que acudieran sin siglas. Así, hasta Velilla se acercaron destacados miembros del PP, como la presidenta de la Diputación y presidenta del partido, Ángeles Armisén; el senador y vicesecretario de Organización, José Antonio Rubio Mielgo; Juan Jesús Blanco, alcalde de Guardo y procurador en las Cortes; José Manuel del Blanco, alcalde de Mantinos; Manuel Maza; alcalde de Santibáñez; Urbano Alonso, diputado provincial, o María José Ortega, alcaldesa de Aguilar, que acompañaron en todo momento al alcalde de Velilla, Gonzalo Pérez.
También puedo verse en la marcha a los cuatro concejales del PSOE en el Ayuntamiento de Velilla, que estuvieron arropados por la senadora Rosa Aldea; la diputada y miembro de la ejecutiva federal socialista María Luz Martínez Seijo, así como varios diputados provinciales y procuradores en las Cortes, además de los compañeros del Ayuntamiento de Guardo y de numerosos militantes del partido.
Tampoco faltaron representantes de Izquierda Unida, organización que se vio representada por la concejala de IU en Guardo, Paula Heras, el coordinador provincial, Iván Fradejas, y la responsable de Ecologismo, Raquel Herrero.
Sobre el escenario, uno de los promotores de la concentración, Eduardo Ibáñez, dio las gracias a los asistentes, tanto de la zona como de la comarca de Lada (Asturias). Ibáñez ha impulsado además la recogida firmas en Change.org, que ya ha superado las 4.000 rúbricas (https://goo.gl/TpxhPY).
En el manifiesto, se reconocía el ‘shock’ que ha provocado el anuncio del posible cierre de la Térmica en toda la comarca.«Son 9 días en los que todos los aquí presentes hemos dicho en algún momento esto es lo que nos faltaba». Ibáñez reclamó a los representantes políticos que «aparquen sus diferencias y que olviden el ‘y tú más’, porque los ciudadanos estamos hartos de reproches y les hemos votado para que nos den soluciones, para hacernos la vida mejor y no para oír reproches sobre de quién es la culpa del cierre y de nuestra situación».
Finalmente, el manifiesto pidió a los 25.000 habitantes de la Montaña Palentina y a los 41.000 habitantes de Langreo (Asturias), así como a sus áreas de influencia, que superan los 800.000 habitantes, que dejen de pagar sus recibos a Iberdrola, que se cambien de comercializadora de luz «para ver qué dice Iberdrola cuando pierda alrededor de medio millón de recibos de electricidad».
El manifiesto terminó con la frase «No al cierre de de las centrales de Lada y Velilla. Sí al futuro en las cuencas mineras».
