I was thinking about stuff again and looking into the transcript and this exchange really does just pull some unspoken weight in it
Stan: How did things get so messed up between us? Ford: We used to be like Dipper and Mabel. The world's about to end and they still work together. How do they do it? Stan: Easy. They're kids. They don't know any better.
Of course we know Stan and Ford’s whole deal, but the whole sentiment here really just pulls a tragic note
There’s this unspoken acknowledgement that they both want to have a relationship, but (at this point) it’s treated as something that just... can’t happen
There’s a sentiment a lot of times that if you really love someone and they love you - that things turn out fine. Or at least, on the surface you’d think ‘well why would we ever stop being close?’ because logically, it doesn’t make sense
But in practice - it happens. It’s a falling out where you still both love each other, but now there’s this obstacle
really love the show for having this moment between them btw
And here in the show - Stan and Ford both see so much of how they used to be in Dipper and Mabel
Even here though where Ford directly draws that parallel though - he’s not connecting how they’re able to not squabble when everything’s going wrong - how they pull together instead of apart when the stakes turn high
and Stan saying it’s because they don’t know any better-
It just really paints a picture of how behind the pair of them are to Dipper and Mabel - especially after the Mabel-land episode
The Little Dipper episode is an instance where Dipper and Mabel have a similar squabble to the Stans’ petty hand-holding debacle, but afterwards they open up to one another and stuff is fine again.
-
The thing about this whole thing - it’s not that Dipper and Mabel never have moments of broken trust between each other or insecurities or anything like this - it’s that when this stuff happened they were eventually able to open up to one another and that’s how they got through it and came to work together without bickering
Because it’s not about blind or naive trust - it’s about that trust and putting in the effort to show some vulnerability and even talk about stuff instead of burying it down
Stan and Ford’s relationship acts as an obvious cautionary foil to Dipper and Mabel’s own, and it’s tragic because like with Dipper & Mabel you can see how Stan & Ford could also have possibly reconciled.
And the tragic thing in this set of lines is that, they really don’t understand and they still view it as this near-impossible thing for themselves.

"My next project will be compiling all the little symbols/numbers/etc. into an image-heavy google doc to discover whatever secrets remain. (Don’t expect that sucker until 2023.)" What came of this?
You know that phenomenon with light traveling through space, and how basically when we're looking at the night sky the stars we're seeing aren't how the stars actually currently look. It's how they looked years and years ago, and because of how much time light travel takes across that much space, that's how far back we're seeing.
So anyway I'm in a different dimension and that doc already definitely exists and is just taking a really long time to get to your end!
-
Nah, but oooh thank you for the reminder actually. This would be a really good project to finish before the Book of Bill releases. Especially for whatever we might get in that book...

An exchange with someone (probably Fidds) telling Ford they saw fords doppelganger (and it actually being stan)
Bonus points for Ford getting dragged to some old, half peeling sign or something that has an ad of one of Stan's scams with his face on it

including Boyish Dan into a 1982 era fic with paranoid Ford, in theory, sounds so good.
Ford reaching out to a neighbor that aside from Fiddleford is the most he knows anyone in town and it's still more an acquaintance sort of relationship than anything real friendly
But I have such a hard time envisioning Manly Dan talking anyway other than the yelling he does
I always kinda wished I could do more with him (especially as Boyish Dan), but the only personality I can glean off is 'yelling' which isn't even a character trait
(Dan trying to comfort paranoid Ford while still yelling is a funny image tho).

Anywho, I understand of course why we didn’t get any scenes of Bord besides the one second where Ford’s eyes are yellow during meditation
But I’ve been spoiled by fanart and I can’t believe that that’s basically the only scene we ever get of Bill possessing Ford
Just look at him.
Tumblr media
Yes, there’s also the bit we got when Dipper hooked up Ford to the machine, but still.
When I say I would have gone feral for a 15 second clip of Bord from a memory resurfacing (out of context) for old man mcgucket (or any other way to just get a good, short clip of creepy or funny bord)

Heartcanon that I've had for well over a year at this point with hard of hearing / Deaf Fiddleford
It's been my new ride or die heartcanon for him since I thought of it back when (to a point that it's become my default for Fidds since)
A big thing of it that really solidified it to me was it for Fidds and Ford's friendship in college and later on too. The idea of Ford learning asl after knowing Fidds for a while and that sort of connection/communication as Ford woking through his discomfort with attention on his hands for the sake of communicating in an easier way with Fidds and that progressing to a point where they're just equally comfortable with one another. Ford using his hands for asl normalizing his hands/people looking at his hands for himself more and giving him a positive association with that and Fiddleford having a roommate/friend at college that he connects with who he progressively gets to be able to easily communicate with.
Fiddleford and Ford comfortably carrying on long conversations in asl like you do with friends where the time easily turns into hours.
I could word it a million ways but its just a really tangible instance in relationships where y'all mutually find these ways of understanding the other in the ways specific to them and really connecting.

I didn't have a strong opinion on em dashes until I transcribed the journal and they became a bane upon my life
I got to dipper's section and thought I was free of them, but no, the 12 year old used em dashes too

I want Stan and Ford to jersey style start making fun of Fiddleford for having a loving family and supportive upbringing.
Meanwhile Fiddleford just is unaffected because the digs are legitimately like 'I bet your parents had a good marriage'

everystan reminding me how Stan was destined to become a fandom favorite with the airing of this episode
You show a man getting a lil scrapped up as he punched zombies with brass knuckles, and protecting the two kids???

Also heartcanon of Fidd's family in Tennessee being a loving family because [REDACTED]
and because I Personally find it really funny for Stan and Ford to have had a father that ranged from Tough Love to Terrible that REALLY added to their emotional and mental hurdles in themselves and their relationships
then there's Fiddleford with a supportive and loving upbringing

It is wild to think about how Bill wound up a balanced character, story dynamic-wise, because he had op powers but prioritized his whims and just assumed things would work out for him
weirdmageddon alternate ending, bill gets distracted by someone enduring a continual slapstick routine of slipping on a banana peel and falling face first into things repeatedly- meanwhile literally just behind him the zodiac joins hands.

Having an alien ship under the town has caused many odd disturbances. Stoplights that don’t work properly. Electrical interference. Sick livestock. And occasional stories of vehicles being magnetically hurled off roads. (Journal 3, pg. 269)
Ford: Yes, this alien ship causes all kinds of disturbances. Malfunctioning stoplights, static on the radios, cars getting tossed 50 feet off the road. Those kinds of things.
Dipper, a 12 year old with acute anxiety: ... How... often for that last one?
Ford: Oh, you know, here and there.
