while wyll is a very well intentioned person part of the game is about subverting tropes, and to ME hes MY special princess. he is by no stretch of the imagination “perfect” n hes not SUPPOSED to be perfect, n he has glaring flaws present in the text in subtext that make him very interesting narratively

while wyll trying to fight monsters and devils to save people is objectively good

in dnd, monsters, devils, goblins, even animals in the context of this game. theyre still literally people. theyre capable of language and complex thoughts and motivations

like everything else in his life—i dont think he really knows how to weigh the burden of that decision bc he can really never let himself feel the full severity of anything without going “ok moving on” or “let my next action prove my worth.” (ie when he tells karlach hes been a beast but he still wants to prove himself, when u tell him hes a monster, he will still prove himself to the sword coast n be tbeir protector.)

its a very rich thing, hes going on his own little narrative journey here where hes realizing what kind of man and hero he wants to be, same as all the rest of them

n a part of that is coming to terms with things like balduran being a lie, n baldurs gate being so much less than he remembers

something i really enjoy abt the game as someone who considers themself an existentialist is. the burden of freedom. we are condemned to be free. despite the facticities and realities of the world n other ppls reactions to our decisions—we alone make our choices n deal with those consequences

wyll is always, always making the best of a bad situation, hes always doing the best he can, hes always doing what he thinks is right, he always tries to be kind and good and gentle to the people “who deserve it.”

Genuine question. I remember back in it’s prime, I tried to get into hs and. Just. Couldn’t. Now I’m a grown up, trying to be an artist. Possibly comic artist. Here’s the q: is home stuck worth reading, simply so I KNOW what it contains? So that I can avoid it’s tropes? I know some comic artists that were into it and they hand wave now. Like, “oh yeah, it was influential. I think it changed comics as a landscape” but then will be like “it sucks!” in the next sentence. So I’m just confused. I really am not... into it story wise? I loved the art, I loved the audio and thought the interactive elements were cool. I just didn’t care about the characters at all. (I got to like. Part 2 of act 5 or something. Everyone said the trolls would make me like it and I just got more confused.) Anyways, all that rambling just to be like: from YOUR perspective, (even if it’s just to avoid its follies?) Should I try and read homestuck? Or can I just read it’s wikia page or whatever and glean what I need to glean? Anyways. it’s entirely up to you because homestuck is one of the (if not THE) longest web comics ever, when people say it sucks theyre mostly referring to the parts of homestuck that made it “problematic” (again hate using that word but u know what i mean) and also that in some parts the plot was dragged out or barely readable bc a lot of the comic is written in a way to waste time inbetween major plot points, similar to a filler episode of a show except if you skip these parts u often miss like . hints to future events between the paragraphs of nonsensical bullshit, Personally when i say it changed the comic landscape i mean that it literally did that, it was the first of its kind to he both interactive, with video mixing, an entire sound track over its whole run time as well as in the very early days (i was not a fan / knew about it for the earliest days) ppl got to essentially vote in what they wanted to happen within the story, hs also took the unique approach of using classes, blood types, and the zodiac and using these things to make multiple personality slots for characters etc etc, it’s kinda impossible to write anything that homestuck hasn’t referenced (which is why a long running gag on here and other social media was ‘haha is that a hs reference’ when talking about anything) so i wouldn’t worry about trying to avoid things EXCEPT for the zodiac as groups bc that’s pretty much become synonymous with hs, it’s definitely confusing to read for first time readers and was way easier to keep up with as it was coming out bc like o said the plot spans over a decade and has over 100 characters and side plots etc etc it’s really convoluted but the tldr is four kids play a game that ends the world and they need help from aliens to set things straight, if u really wanted theirs a bunch of hs explained videos where u could just like . skim it and basically get the same exact experience, another thing about hs is for it’s time it had a pretty big cast of lgbt characters which at the time made it uknow “representation” though hussie still sucks and has been homophobic before i think a lot of ppl latched to hs for so many reasons and eh i don’t know where i’m going with this anymore sooooo um well i’m if u have a more specific question know!

ok fuck it im gonna Post My Opinion Online™️ again bc i gotta rant about this fucking movie

venom 2 had so much potential as a romance movie, and i tried literally SO fucking hard to listen to everyones view points (even viewpoints of straight people!!) but still cant agree/see it that way. the director stated it was about their relationship as host/symbiote, and i honestly believe him. and im mad it turned out that way after all the buildup from the first movie.

lets start with act 1. the 'lovers quarrel' as everyone puts it. yes, i agree they use typical tropes like 'take youre stuff and leave!' and all that, but for something to be even considered a lovers quarrel, it has to be classified as a relationship before hand. all the scenes leading up to that was about how they cant get along and cant see eye to eye (no, venom making eddie breakfast in an attempt to prove his worth to him is not an excuse for romance. i might have to watch again to confirm the exact motive, but im pretty sure love wasnt it).

rewind to the first movie, which shows a perfect example of how a quarrel should be formatted. they meet eachother, they start to bond, they have a small fight, they change their percpectives, reunite with a stronger relationship ('what made you change your mind?' 'you, eddie.') and ends with them getting along better than before.

but, since the second movie starts with the quarrel, the implication doesnt work. the pattern for the trope to be successful isnt there. what SHOULDVE happened was for them to be at the same level they ended the previous movie with, THEN end act 1 with the quarrel, which at that point can now be classified as closer to a 'lovers'. and what would continue to make it a lovers, would be the outcome of the quarrel. the first movies quarrel made them realize theyre closer than just host and symbiote, and so logically, this next one would end in them realizing theyre more than just friends.

now, how this ties into eddies arc + the apology scene. imo eddies arc went nowhere in the entire movie. the movie established in the beginning that hes not good with honesty and putting his thoughts/concerns into words (scene with anne). then, during the apology scene later, instead of having actually change and learn to properly speak his mind, he simply repeats the exact words he used against venom in their fight and apologizes for it, rather than thinking up something geniune. (again, how tf is this good romance writing? or romantic at all?)

venoms arc didnt change much either, not that he really had one. what im trying to say is that i think they both ended the movie the exact same as they were when it began.

ideally, eddie would have an arc about trust and honesty, that hes not a 'cancer' to others and just needs to learn how to adapt to the needs of the ones hes close to. venom would have a similar arc, coming to terms with human rules for living and the reasons why eddie cant just do whatever he wants all the time, and that theyre not both losers if they continue to work together. the overall main arc for them would be realizing they both actually have a lot in common, both connecting as kicked-out outcasts, but are different enough to know how to heal the others faults. their strengths and weaknesses fit together like puzzle pieces, and only together can they help the other thrive. not just in terms of staying alive, but in an emotional way. a human romantic relationship kind of way. a soulbond kind of way.

because eddie isnt exactly the most normal human, venom has a lot more human traits than the average symbiote, and they both have a lot of problems that the other has the potential to fix. thats what the movie shouldve been about.
