What to Do With Your Life For the Rest of May
“ You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” ~ C. S. Lewis
The past two weeks have been amazing but also jam packed and exhausting for me! I got home on May 1 from visiting my daughter Sarah in Germany feeling very jet lagged, but so happy that I was able to travel and spend time with her and my sweet little Bristol. The next couple of days were a blur, but I still worked and even did some blog pictures. May 4 was my 58th birthday and my daughter made a delicious dinner for me and Graham and Hudson made me a beautiful birthday cake! The celebration continued with an amazing dinner on Wednesday at a restaurant called Machete. I highly recommend eating there if you’re local…it was one of the best meals ever! My advice is to go hungry and enjoy every bite. On Thursday, my sister and her husband took us out to dinner (it was a week of eating), and by the time Friday rolled around, I didn’t want to eat or go out anywhere, but Sunday was Mother’s Day and we went to brunch! Last week, I jumped back into blogging with both feet. I had a photo shoot on Thursday and did video and photos on Friday. I also started going to yoga again, and working out with my favorite trainer at a new gym. In between all of this, my hair color needed to be done, my nails were horrible and needed a fill in, I had a Hydrafacial and got my lashes done! Oh and did I mention that we got a new puppy? Whew…by the time yesterday got here, I was pooped! My philosophy…life is good when you’re busy!
This is my first “what to do with your life” post in a while and I have a lot to share, so grab a cup of coffee or a glass of wine and enjoy!
One thing is my life that is non negotiable is my morning meditation and this morning, I discovered a new meditation that I really enjoyed! Alicia Keys has teamed up with Deepak Chopra for a 21 Day Meditation called Activating the Divine Feminine. You can check it out here!
Just in time for summer, From the Vine brings us A Guide to 10 Perfect Summer Wine and Food Pairings! Find out all about pairing summer wine and food…
Speaking of food and wine pairings - I’m making this delicious Farro Tabbouleh with Burrata and Hummus from Half Baked Harvest for my book club dinner on Tuesday night. We read The Book of Longings by Sue Monk Kid. It’s a really wonderful book set in biblical times so I thought this dish would be totally appropriate. Even though white wine wasn’t consumed during that time in history, I will serve a white…most likely a Chenin Blanc to go with this!
Did you know that National Wine Day is celebrated every year on May 25. It is a day to appreciate wine and the science and art behind enology. This day should not be confused with National Drink Wine Day, which happens on February 18. Who knew…
Also happening in May is National Hamburger Day which is celebrated on May 28 to get people prepared for summer BBQ season. Most everyone loves a delicious burger and it’s one of the most beloved foods in America, so no wonder there is a whole day to celebrate it. Even though the burger was invented in Germany, it has become an icon of American culture, with Americans eating an average of 50 billion burgers every year. So fire up the grill, and get ready to celebrate National Burger Day.
In most areas of the country, May is a good month to plant a garden. If you’re new to gardening and thinking about planting one, you’ll find this article from Life Hacker really helpful!
We have so much shade in our yard, so this year, I’m going to plant a container garden and grow a few herbs including basil for making pesto, and some tomato plants. I found this article from The Spruce that is so helpful and answers any questions you may have about creating a container garden!
If you are in Australia, parts of the western US, western South America, or in South-East Asia, you will see the Super Flower Full Moon totally eclipsed and turn a shade of red for about 14 minutes during this total lunar eclipse, weather permitting. If you live in the eastern part of the US, this will be visible as a partial lunar eclipse, but still spectacular.
Gifts for the Graduate
May is graduation month and if you’re looking for the perfect gift, I’ve got you covered with my gift guides…

A Few Things I’m Loving Right Now!
Movies and Television
I’m looking forward to Georgetown - While originally premiering in late 2019 to independent film events, Christopher Waltz, Vanessa Redgrave and Annette Bening star in Georgetown, released on May 14. It’s a thriller centered around Ulrich Mott (Waltz), an ambitious social climber who marries a wealthy widow in Washington D.C. for his. sole purpose of mixing with powerful political players, the scenes are tense and the concept boggles the mind, but perhaps power and politics breed such a desire?
If you love Food Network stars, Bobby Flay and Giada de Laurentiis, this one’s for you! Premiering earlier this year, Bobby Flay and Giada de Laurentiis pair up and travel to Italy to enjoy the food and each other’s company. Have a look at an overview of the series from Mashable below. I can’t wait to watch this one!
For all the fashion lovers out there - another much-anticipated new series, this one on Netflix, is Halston. From creator and director Ryan Murphy, starring Ewan McGregor. Halston tells the untold story of the meteoric rise and fall of the first American celebrity fashion designer.
This one will just make you feel good!
Strawberry season is almost over, but there’s still time to make this delicious Strawberry Shortcake from Sally’s Baking Addiction!
I hope you’ve enjoyed today’s post…Have a great Sunday!

Then the next step is to send a warranty claim and they warn in big bold letters: If you send two claims, we will deny your warranty request!!
I almost feel like i'm causing them a serious inconvenience with my warranty claim. mastitis, engorgement, baby feeding, not having a pump for two weeks are all problems that they seem very unconcerned about.
Tumblr media
Buy this pump. Seriously, stop looking, buy it. This review is long but will hopefully answer any questions you have. Or post one and I'll try to answer it.
Earlier this year I had twins born at 34 weeks. They were doing well, but did spend some time in the NICU. When babies are in the NICU, you become super obsessed with how much milk they are getting. They can't go home until they take their "minimums" and gain weight. As a result, I've pretty much been exclusively pumping since they were born. My girl would latch, but I couldn't tell how much she was getting and she would get tired after a few minutes and wouldn't take the rest of her bottle. My boy had breathing problems at first and was being fed with a tube for the first 10 days. After that he had to learn how to eat and would get tired, so I didn't try to nurse him. Since I had to feed two and wanted to share my supply, pumping was the way to go.
Since I had preemies, my insurance paid for me to use a Medela Lactina pump. This is the big blue thing that is "hospital grade" and retails for a boatload ($1500 for the love!). I used the Lactina for the first two months but wanted something more portable (I bought a car adapter so I could plug it in and pump in the car on long days out). And, the Lactina is loud as all get out, which was annoying and I actually covered it with a blanket to muffle the sound so I could pump in the same room my husband and 3 year old daughter were watching TV in so I could be part of the family. I contemplated getting a Medela Freestyle, but read mixed reviews about being able to maintain supply. Having twins I did not want to risk my supply going down.
I took a leap of faith and bought this pump using gift cards for about half the cost. I figured if it didn't work at least I wasn't out all the money. Best. Decision. Ever.
youtube
Awesomeness: -It is SUPER quiet compared to the Lactina. I have no idea how it compares to other pumps, but it is going to be nice to have at work and be able to answer the phone while pumping. -It is pretty portable. I wanted something I could clip to my belt and walk around the house, but that is the Freestyle and I couldn't risk it. This is pretty lightweight, and I'm actually contemplating putting a ribbon through the handle and putting it over my neck. It never fails that when I'm pumping my husband is out of the house and my older daughter needs something. At the very least, I've put it on with my hands-free pumping bra (Simple Wishes brand- buy that too) and been able to put it on the kitchen counter to make bottles or lunch or whatever. Haven't tried cooking dinner yet, but that may happen. -Nightlight is pretty neat, and has two levels. -Timer is a cool feature. Most folks don't need to pump for more than 15-20 minutes, but most folks don't have twins. The timer shuts the pump off after 30 minutes which is how long I pump for. I used to set a timer on my phone, but don't need to do that so much anymore. -Massage feature is pretty nifty. This pump almost pulses when creating suction. It was kind of weird at first since the other pump didn't do it, but it actually makes pumping pretty comfortable. The "massage" feature speeds up the pump and is designed to stimulate letdown. Once you have letdown, you are supposed to turn off the massage feature. (I don't, I like the fastest speed for my pumping. But again, twins.) -Memory feature- the pump remembers what your last "normal" and "massage" settings were and goes back to them. -Vacuum control- I use the pump on either level 2 or 3. It has 12 levels. Wow. As a nurse I'm really wondering who would need level 12. Maybe for someone with inverted nipples. Maybe if the battery ever gets weak I'll need to go up.
Quirks: -It took a LONG time (probably 12 hours) to fully charge the battery when I first got the pump. It also says it can run plugged in, which is true, but so far as I can tell actually uses the battery regardless of whether or not it is plugged in. I could be wrong. -If you use the nightlight feature while pumping it will drain your battery faster, and you will likely not get a full three hours of pump time. Probably not a problem for most people but worth noting. -The bottles and pump kit are pretty cheap. That would probably be my biggest gripe about the whole thing. If we are spending this much money on a pump, the kit should be stellar. (Most pump kits are pretty terrible, so this is about par for the course.) But all is not lost. The ends of the tubing actually fit into my kit I had been using with my Medela. Also, and this is a problem with most pump kits, most women would need to lean forward to get the milk to drop down when sitting upright. So, my Lactina kit had removable flanges which I promptly tossed and used the angled ones from Pumpin' Pal. (Buy those too.) Also, I bought a pump adapter kit that worked with the Playtex bottles I was using so I could pump directly into the drop-in liners. (Cleaner that way, eventually the bottles will get gross no matter what you do.) -If you are not using their backflow valves, you need to pay attention to your tubing. I am not, and have gotten some moisture into one of the tubes on the end. I just blow it out with a hair dryer in a couple of seconds. The tubing is nothing special and you could easily replace it with something from the hardware store if you needed to. It would also be pretty easy to jerryrig the tubing from another pump kit, which I may do so I can attach the backflow valves.
The "cons" I listed here may seem like a lot, but to me it wasn't enough that I would take away a star. I've had it for two weeks and I love it, and haven't noticed a drop in supply. I'll update this review if anything changes, but I don't see that happening.
So go buy this pump. Or put it on your registry or wishlist. You won't be sorry.

Updated 10/16/13 -A couple more product links for all the parts I'm using with my cobbled-together homemade kit. You really don't NEED anything but the angled flanges and hands-free pumping bra, but if you wanted to piece something together that's a bit more user-friendly, here are the links: Medela Personal Fit Breastsheild Connectors - Medela 87071 Medela Valves & Membranes (Set of 1)
UPDATE 10/28/13- I've gone back to work and am taking this pump back and forth. I just put it in a small tote bag I had at home. I made two pump kits so I can leave one at home and one in my office at work and all I take back and forth is the pump. That probably wasn't necessary, but I probably would have ended up forgetting something one day so this was my way to make sure that didn't happen. Pump is awesome, and nobody can hear it when I answer the phone. The doctor in the office next to me is pumping as well, and you can hear her pump down the hall... -Also, I finally attached the backflow valves. I basically just cut the tubing and attached one piece to either side of the valve. It's a small challenge to get the tubing on the large side, but it does fit. Now I can still stick the end of the tubing into my homemade Medela kit and it works great and I don't need to worry about moisture getting into my pump.
If you've got questions, post 'em and I'll do my best to answer! (I should probably just make a video...)
Best pump ever (only pump I've used but only one I will ever need!) I am a full time working mom. I was lucky to get 13 weeks of maternity leave. I was concerned when I had my baby because I have breast implants (below muscle). But after birth (via csection), my baby latched and we were in business.
I breastfed only for first 3 weeks. Then I introduced 1-2 pumps a day. I didn't get much-but that was expected. Around the 5-6week mark I began pumping and stashing more frequently. By the time I went back to work at 13 weeks pp I had 800oz in my deep freezer.
My baby is now 23 weeks old and I have 1750oz in my deep freezer and she still nurses. This pump is AMAZING! It's nice to have the mobility of a rechargeable battery Bc I can pump and do chores and even pump in the backseat of a car while someone else is driving.
I have been separated from my baby for up to 20 hours and this pump is amazing! I would highly recommend to anyone over any of the other brands. I have even convinced some of my second time moms to switch to this pump (since it is free w insurance) and they have loved it and thanked me a 100times over.
The attached pictures are of my frozen milk stash and the other is a picture of my morning pump (after breastfeeding my baby girl).
Cheers and happy baby feeding!
I purchased this pump out of pocket and then mailed receipt and reimbursement application to tricare and they returned my money 100%. So worth it because if you go through a retailer they will only give you the S2 (which is not rechargeable).
Wow. Just wow. Why did I not hear of this pump sooner? Comfortable, portable, lightweight, oh- and more than double the milk!! Seriously, it is almost a crime that the insurance companies just give out inferior pumps when this is available. I was concerned when returning to work with my second baby that I would not be able to produce enough milk. With my first, I pumped like 6 times a day at work to make enough with my Medela PISA. Now, those worries are gone. Totally gone! The proof is in the pictures. 10 mins of total comfort and quiet on the Spectra vs 20 mins of loud wrenching and pulling on the PISA.

Capsule Wardrobe Remix: How to Wear the Convertible Sweater Four Ways
**Press play to watch the video!**
Happy Monday!
Exciting news–I just discovered that some of my favorite items from last year are back in stock with exact or have new updated versions! 🙌🏻 This post was one of your favorites last year, so I wanted to give it a refresh!
In this post, I’m showing you how to wear one of my favorite sweaters four different ways. (This is also a similar new version of it this year!) My exact one I’m wearing in this post is also still available but the sizing is limited–however, I have a hack: most of the petite sizes are still in stock, so I would try ordering that! The petite sizing is only 2″ shorter–which I still think would be just as cute–especially because I often tuck mine in, so the length doesn’t really matter anyway! (And Nordstrom has free returns, so it’s worth a shot!)
Before we jump in, let’s go over the staples I used to create these looks.
Convertible sweater: First up, obviously. This sweater, you guys, is probably one of the most versatile things you could buy this entire year. It’s both cowl neck and off the shoulder. You can wear it as a tunic or tuck it into high-waisted jeans, skirt, or even over a dress!
I’m only showing you four ways to wear it today, but there really are ENDLESS ways you can style it and to top it off, it just might be one of the softest things I’ve ever purchased. (Oh, it comes in lot’s of colors too!) It’s so soft that this was the FIRST thing I put on when I transitioned my closet over to fall because I couldn’t wait to get it on my body 😂
I typically tuck it in because I think it’s most flattering to show your waistline, but you can leave it tucked out as well. It’s more of a tunic length, shorter in the front than the back. I would highly recommend sizing down because it runs pretty oversized. For length reference, I’m 5’6.
Skinny Jeans: These haven’t been in stock in FOREVER! You guys know I have become obsessed with AE and Abercrombie who make some of my favorite (super budget friendly jeans) but there are some jeans that cannot be replicated and are worth the splurge, and these Rag & Bone skinnies are that. They were my #1 bestseller when I got them at the Nordstrom sale two years ago and they were sold out for so long–I always got asked to link similar and the thing is–there aren’t similar. They’re the real deal!
They are super stretchy, they feel like butter and unlike any other jean–they’re also not particularly thick which is why I think they’re so comfortable. I also love that the raw hem is very subtle–and the leg opening isn’t TOO skinny or too straight. They are ankle length. Sizing: I would say if you’re on the fence go with the size down because they are very stretchy–they run a bit big.
Heeled Booties: I recommend a pair of neutral booties for every fall wardrobe. If you go with one with a bit of a pointed toe, light tan color, and little bit of a heel, they also help to elongate your leg, which is hard to find in a bootie, as most of the time they can cut you off at the ankles and make your legs look stubby! A midi heel is great because it gives you a bit of height but is still comfortable for lot’s of walking!
The pair I’m wearing here is from last year, but I’d recommend this pair of Sam Edelmans if you want a bit of a heel or if you want a lower heel, this pair–which are insanely comfy! (Kelly has them in like 4 colors, haha!)  I’ve also been dying to try Everlane’s Day Boots–I’m in love with their Day Heels (they are SO comfortable) and I think the brown leather version is calling my name!
Leopard loafers: You’ve seen a LOT of these leopard loafers on this blog, because they really do make every outfit look instantly more stylish. Leopard always adds a ton of visual interest to any outfit. Plus, they are truly the most comfortable shoes I have ever put on my feet. They required zero break-in, no blisters–ever!
Leather tote: The Madewell Transport tote making the capsule wardrobe cut comes as a shock to absolutely none of you, I am sure. It’s my everything bag. Work, travel, groceries–whatever, this is always the bag I’m reaching for and it comes in several styles and colors as well.
Black pumps: I’ve owned this particular pair of Sam Edelman pumps for years but they make a ton of similar versions currently that you can shop here! They run TTS in my experience!
Trench coat: FULLY RESTOCKED! HUZZAH! It was gone for so long and now it’s back in ALL sizes! (Also in black!)
I purchased this trench by London Fog last Spring before my trip to London and it is one of my very favorite coats for both Fall and Spring. It has a detachable hood as well as a removable liner. Which unlike a lot of trench coats, does add a significant amount of warmth. I absolutely adore it and it’s one of my favorite jackets. It looks super chic for work, and just as pretty for dinner or a stroll around the neighborhood. It’s amazing for travel as well. Runs large, so size down. I’m wearing XS.
Leather jacket: I now own two leather jackets–one brown and one black. The black one is my newest addition and I don’t know what took me so long to get one! I definitely love both colors and I think whichever color is best for you just depends on your preferences. The one I feature here is also from last year but there are tons at really good prices here!  My favorite is this one, which is most similar to the one you see me wearing here!
Leopard clutch: For the same reasons as I sing the praises of the leopard loafer, I love a good leopard clutch! (Nordstrom actually has a TON of different leopard clutches right now!) I’m a huge fan of it for going out because it brightens up even the most basic outfit. Plus, it’s such a steal for less than $50 and it looks and feels like the designer version.
Belts: My gold buckle belt is Topshop and has since sold out (boo!) but this one is really similar and so is this one!
Okay, now let’s get into these looks!
Look #1: Date Night
This is a look that is suitable for just about anywhere in Chicago. Dinner, drinks, it’s great for all of the above! Throw a leather jacket over your shoulders and you’re good to go! (With the leather jacket I felt like I was subtly channeling a 2017 Olivia Newton John and I am so into it.)
Now, remember, this sweater is tunic length, which means you can wear it tucked in or out. I tend to prefer all of my shirts tucked in just because it defines your waistline and elongates the leg. Additionally, I think it makes it a bit more formal (for instances such as date night!) The pumps go a long way in dressing this outfit up, but not too much. I like them here because they’re a bit more feminine and “date” esque than if you were to pair this outfit with booties, but booties would work perfectly too!
You can see this demonstrated in the video above, but to tuck in, just take a corner of the sweater, twist it, and then tuck it in. It’s really easy!
Look #2: On the Airplane
When you find a sweater that feels like a hug mixed with the softest blanket you’ve ever felt, it becomes a no-brainer to wear for travel. (Specifically I am referring to a fleecy, microfiber-ish, faux fur-ish blanket I found at Target last year that is wrapped around me as I write this post and will probably not be removed from my body until next April–unless it’s to put on this sweater). I know you have one of those blankets too. THAT is what this sweater feels like!
Anyway, pair it with your favorite jeans and the comfiest loafers ever (that slip-off quality comes in reaaallyy handy at airport security) and you’ll be good to go!
P.S. My suitcase is on sale right now on Amazon for $180! It’s one of my favorite purchases ever! You can see a full review of it here!
Look #3: Business Casual
When you’re trying to get the most out of your wardrobe, it’s important to remember that you can layer OVER as well as under! This sweater is great layered over a work-appropriate dress! If you’re feeling a little “garbage baggish” like you have no shape, reach for a belt (mine is old but this one is similar!) and cinch it at your waist and VOILA. WOMANLY FIGURE! This look would also be just as cute with a pencil skirt or a pair of slim trousers or ponte leggings for an office-friendly look.
Look #4: Sunday Dinner Casual
Perhaps the best match of all for this perfect sweater is your favorite jeans, a pair of booties, and a plaid scarf (mine is last year’s but similar here at Nordstrom Rack!) . All you need is a PSL ;-P (By the way, if you’re looking for how to wear a scarf a few different ways, that post is right over here!) This is the perfect outfit for dinner or a movie to wind down the weekend!
How would you style the convertible sweater?
