FTH Fanbinding: "Kaleidoscope" by Silvergirl
Whew. This was quite the undertaking as I’d felt ambitious. @totallysilvergirl was the winner of my FTH fanbinding auction and chose one of her own fics, from a fandom I’m actually in (Sherlock). I’d skimmed her AO3 to see what fics might be her potential choice and had immediately zeroed in on “Kaleidoscope”. The title was evocative and the plot sounded intriguing, being a fix-it for the end of Season 3. Good-sized wordcount, too.
I was super happy when she actually chose this fic!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The typesetting took me a long time and I leaned very heavily into the whole kaleidoscope theme. I also decided to use different colours and fonts for the different PoVs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was also the first time I tried out a title page spreading over both pages – usually, I’ve only used the right page and the left one stayed blank, but I wanted to try spreading out the picture this time. It worked quite well, overall.
Tumblr media
For endpapers, I chose this lovely purple Chiyogami paper. Purple has become Sherlock’s colour, in a way, and so it seemed quite fitting. I strengthened the crease with Schirting again.
Also, because the book had 8 signatures, I think, I sewed with tapes to make the spine more secure. It was the second time trying this and it worked really well!
Tumblr media
Now to the case. Oh boy. XD
I had to think a bit about the cut-out design. I wanted it to yet again resemble a kaleidoscope, but it took me a while to wrap my head around how best to do it. I finally decided to make a stencil for the centrepiece and add some more elements without cut-outs.
Tumblr media
I decided on the lovely shattered glass rainbow foil and am super in love with the effect, especially on the spine! I think it looks so cool!
Tumblr media
I not only made SilverGirl’s copy but also one for myself. They’re very similar, just the endpapers and the foil on the cover are different.
I messed up on the spine title on my copy a bit. The fight with the foil is real. *sigh* But it’s not too bad.
Tumblr media
A huge thank you again to Silvergirl for participating in FTH this year and for putting her trust in me!
Materials used:

Flight Rising flights but as art mediums:
There are some overlaps in mediums since dragons are so tight knit and far spread
Earth: tile work/mosaics, jewelry work, ceramics, stone sculpture, chalk, clay work, plaster, leather work, rain chains
Water: plaster work, woven tapestries, shell jewelry and chimes, pearl inlays, decorative sails and flags, basket weaving, sandstone carving, watercolors, mirrors and glass sculptures
Shadow: optical illusions, black and white photography, puzzle boxes, uranium glass work, maybe iron work, mycology arrangements, shadow boxes, gouache, anything that involves glowing in the dark
Light: stone carving and gold foiled painting, sometimes tapestry weaving to depict an image or scene, impressionism, oil paint, tempera, portraiture, clothing and attire, mirrors, pigment making
Plague: hyper realism, and taxidermy, ceramics, bone carvings, tattoos, ink block prints, collage art, murals, leather work, totems and large outdoor installations
Nature: floral arrangements, dye work, wood work, candle making, hot wax painting, landscaping, rain chains, wind chimes, tapestries, needle felting, carpentry, animal cosmetics (haircuts, animal safe dye, nail and claw painting, etc), apparel/clothing, pigment making

Wind: paper mache, ribbon mediums, basket weaving, sonorous sculptures, wind chimes, feathered attire, really tall and thin structures/sculptures, jade carving, blanket weaving
Arcane: resin, stained glass, welding, intricate silver work, collaborative neon work with shadow (they need that special eye for glow in the dark), crystal carving, zen gardens, bonsai art, screen printing, photography, illuminated manuscripts, clothing and apparel, gold foil work, abstract art
Lightning: bronze cast sculptures, sand sculptures (when lightning strikes the sand and turns it to stone) aluminum casts poured into ant colonies/hills, pop art, up-cycled art, photography, art that is still capable of being utilized and interacted with because people and dragons are part of the medium, assemblage art, banners and flags

Tiny Books Bang 2023
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Kaer Morhen Book Club by @jackironsides, typeset by @catspawbindery . Amyda has received her copy, and so has the author! so here we goooo
I JUMPED at the chance to bind this - agonised for a while about whether or not I got my first choice in claims - as this was a fic I already know and love and I had IDEAS for what to do with it. Amyda's typeset was so inspiring, including a frontispiece and medieval-esque fonts, and since the fic features medieval romance novels (chivalric, really) I thought it would be fun to try to emulate the binding of the novel Starcrossed Love as described in the fic:
He waves an octavo at them. The cover has beautifully marbled paper, and black leather enclosing the spine with gilt decorations pressed in.
And there it is, with its dark calfskin binding, a single star stamped in gold on the spine.
This is an octavo binding (though printed on A4 paper, so a very small octavo - an A7-sized book), it has a leather spine (animal: unknown), marbled cove papers, and a star foiled onto the spine with a hot foil pen. for endpapers I chose Japanese Chiyogami paper as I'd stumbled over this particular pattern by accident and thought both the colour scheme and pattern matched the medieval vibe. the headbands are green and gold embroidery floss.
I struggled a little with the leather - which I've never worked with before - so my own copy (the first trial copy) didn't come out as well, but lessons learned and the typesetter's and the author copies came out beautifully.
my copy, using a different, thicker leather for the spine, resulting in no visible hinge at all:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it doesn't look bad, but it's not the vibe I wanted and I had to do a lot of infilling to account for the thickness of the leather since I didn't have any leather paring tools.
the author's copy is a different colour scheme for two reasons: I sourced the leather from the leather scraps bin in Shepherd's, London, and the pieces were very small. I was only able to find two pieces large enough to cover the spine of an A7 (I'd brought along a dummy to test the scraps against) and the two pieces were different colours. I also didn't have enough of the medieval-esque Chiyogamy for a 3rd set of endpapers so I chose a wildly different but striking Chiyogamy paper to match the colours of the leather and marbled paper. the headbands are dark blue and pale blue embroidery floss.

bonus: all three copies together:

Kindling by @syncogon
He is, after all, a Pokemon Trainer. What do you think?
Fandom: 全职高手 (Quánzhí Gāoshǒu) | The King's Avatar
Alternate Universe - Pokémon Fusion
So this took a lot longer than expected, but it's finally done! 🎉 (Oh to have the energy to Make a Thing!)
August 2022: Typeset the fic.
September 2022: Sewed textblock, endbands, and cut boards for the cover.
July 2023: Made cover, cased in textblock, and added the title -- first time using the hot foil pen I got for my birthday!
Another first: this book was made quarto-style. I used regular copy paper so that it would be short-grained. Trimming was a exercise of patience: 'hmm maybe juuust a little bit more, oh shoot that looked rough maybe a bit more will fix it...' ad infinitum. (My printer has margins, and I wanted the images to go right to the edge.)
Fonts: primarily set in Alegreya, title in Catchy Mager. (Thought I'd changed all instances of Cinzel to Alegreya and updated my Print Details page to reflect that, but alas. Missed the Archive Info and Contents headings. Ah, the things you notice once a piece is done :/ )
For the cover and title page I leaned into the ideas of 'kindling'/fire and 'Tiny Herb'/grass. I chose green bookcloth and green floral endpapers because the story takes place at Tiny Herb Gym and in a forest. I chose flame coloured paper for the covers because of both Jun's quirk, and also the 'kindling' of QYF, TR, YX & Jun's Pokémon journeys. The smoke/flame and grass pics used in the title page are free images from Rawpixel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The endbands' colours were chosen to match the green endpapers and the yellow of the mimikyu Acinonyx6 drew for the fic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since "Kindling" was part of QZGS Bang Bang 2022 I also included Acinonyx6's artwork. (My printer really can't do the art justice!)
[a.cinonyx's Instagram]
For the scene breaks I made a pokéball out of shapes, then pasted it in and anchored it as a character.

It slipped my mind that I kind of promised a making-of post - sorry @notabuddhist, who so kindly gave me permission to bind One of Many Great Fires for @pleasantboatpress!
I've tried to include as many making-of photos but sometimes i am just a shit photo taker so I am very sorry in advance.
Tumblr media
Step 1: Stitch a text block and planning, Endband making
Tumblr media
Anyone who knows me knows I love a good rounded book. I started rounding books from my third bind and haven't looked back.
I took a little while to get to this as it required colour printing and I don't have a colour printer at home. I finally got off my ass close to the end of Binderary and went to the printer I usually go to to print my coloured prints - luckily they didn't read my gay porn or ask me about it, though I've been getting increasingly pointed questions about what exactly i'm making.
glue round number 1 and trim with my guillotine, and then i take my trusty hammer to the spine to do some rounding.
So, okay, anyone who's read this fic knows it takes place on Vulcan. And i've seen enough imagery on star trek to know Vulcan is endless red sand and heat and oh boy, i feel hot just thinking about it.
I knew red would be a colour that fit thematically and I had recently found lovely marbled paper that really looked so much like the gas giant appearance of Jupiter but red. I then pulled out my trusty colibri cranberry bookcloth to do a couple of colour match checks- i love colibri and will never not recommend it.
Usually at this point, I do my endbands - and I did a simple two colour front bead endband because when i started this, that was all I knew how to do.
Tumblr media
Step 2: Case making
I recently found out that what i usually do for books is called the square back bradel bind (though technically this is not square back), but you get my meaning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Case is made, and then glued to bookcloth. Look at those crisp edges, yum yum. I'm generally a messy glue user, so you can see all the bits of paper stuck to the back of the half-done case, also with big F and Bs drawn on them because i never remember which side i want the front and back to be. The case looks pretty good with nary a glue stain. (I did a good job with glue management this time, phew)
Step 3: Decorative steps
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My usual go-to is HTV because I'm not quite adept at other arty decorative methods like paint or usage of the foil quill. I decided to go with vulcan calligraphy on the back - with a river binding strip of marble paper in the middle. To make it look extra fancy, i made little silver HTV strips to border the river binding strip, though it warped a little from the heat because it was so ridiculously thin.
Step 4: Casing in
No photos of this because i'm usually hopping on one foot doing things on speedmode with PVA.
Shall pay tax with this photo - I love taking photos of my bookshelf and I really loved the burst of colour of the bookshelf after Binderary'23 was over.
I have made something like 21 case binds, but nearly 30 book binds (inclusive of coptic and stab) in total. that's a pretty decent number for someone who's only been binding for the last 9 months.

ARTISTS WHO WILL SEND YOU COOL STUFF IN THE MAIL
I just got cool stuff in the mail from @shinesurge‘s Patreon and I just think getting cool stuff in the mail from artists is a win-win situation in these Trying Fucking Times, so here are a handful of friends and acquaintances with pledge-for-mail systems that I’m aware of. ARIA BELL (Kidd Commander) - Twice yearly postcard prints. There’s a tier for just the postcard + bonus sticker, and a deluxe tier that includes tricked-out packaging and other surprise ephemera related to the characters and comic. Really fun and immersive, and different every time. Considering the amount of work that goes into making these things, either tier is a steal imo.
JULES RUIZ - Monthly mini zines, just starting up again after a hiatus, so now is the perfect time to sign up for a zine in January. The zines run the gamut from queer/trans autobio to natural history to explicit work, with incredibly detailed and thoughtful art. A cheaper digital-only tier is also available, but the physical zines are extremely worth it. COYOTEPRINCE - Quarterly prints featuring exquisite art of supernatural entities (we’ve had ghosts, faeries, cryptids, vampires and werewolves so far). The October cards have metallic foil accents, and every postcard comes with a newsletter that covers a semi-obscure facet of (usually) nineteenth-century life. SUPERPOSE - I don’t even know how to begin to describe the stuff Joe and Anka send to their mail-tier patrons, it’s like augmented reality for their webcomic. Characters’ family polaroids, tourism brochures for the comic’s location, DIY papercraft projects, and fanfic written by cast members are just a few of the things I’ve seen them do. JOB SATISFACTION - Quarterly postcard prints related to my webcomic. These also come with a newsletter, sometimes featuring in-depth character or worldbuilding material that doesn’t make it into the comic, microfiction, ciphers, and shop talk on my process for the art. Occasionally I do fun wax seals or bits of in-world ephemera. And the characters in the art are hot, so there’s that. These are just the ones I’m aware of in my little niche social circle. I don’t think enough can be said for anything that diverts your attention from the screen for a more personal connection with the art and stories you enjoy, even for a few minutes.

Bubbly
Tumblr media
(not my gif!)
Shawn Michaels x Fem!Reader one shot
[Also available on Archive of Our Own!]
Word count: 964
Tags: Romantic gestures, champagne, the heart shaped hot tub!, Loverboy Shawn
Summary:
Prompt: Bubbly | A romantic night with you and Shawn.
Author’s note: Prompt from @fluffyfebruary! I’ll be posting various stories using their prompts throughout the month.
Shawn sure enjoyed playing up that loverboy persona of his.
You were awoken that morning with a loud knock on your door. Rushing down the steps to see what the problem was, you flung open the door to be greeted by a gigantic bouquet of blood red roses. Your eyes widened at the delivery boy who struggled under the weight of the beautiful flowers. The note was printed on hefty cardstock with gold foil surrounding the edges. Shawn certainly was sparing no expense on this night of romance.
There won't be any heartbreak at the hotel tonight.
-S
You rolled your eyes playfully at the card. The rest of your day was a blur as you tried to keep focus on the errands around the house. Shawn had decided to call you a couple of times while you took care of your chores in an attempt to distract you. You fell for it after the second call, leaning against the wall to hear his smooth voice tell you how much he missed you. A fuzziness built at the way he called you honey, the word just skirting the edge of lewdness. After the call ended you ignored the constant ringing that followed it up. Shawn loved to play his little games with you.
As the night approached you, butterflies fluttered in your stomach. A car would be coming to drop you off at a hotel on the outskirts of town. You were completely awash in Shawn's all encompassing feelings of passionate love for you, and you for him. Memories of past rendezvous left you in an intoxicating daze while you applied your makeup and chose your outfit. When you heard the car horn beep outside, you looked down at the dress you wore in confusion. In your zoned out state you didn't even realize what you grabbed out of your closet! It was sexier than you were going for, but as you left the house you figured it fit the mood of the night better than whatever your original plan would be.
Your nerves were completely bunched up at the sight of the hotel coming closer and closer. The building was relatively inconspicuous, causing you to become more alert. Shawn never did anything on the small scale and this place felt absolutely miniscule. It was tucked away amongst the beginnings of a forest that seemed to go on for miles. Shawn met you at the door of the lobby dressed in all black, his blond hair waving down his shoulders in contrast. You couldn't help but to run into his arms and squeal at seeing him again. It just wasn't the same seeing him on TV bouncing around into the ring like an overgrown golden retriever puppy. Your friends were getting sick of the way you grabbed them in excitement every time Shawn won a match. He called you like clockwork after each show no matter how it ended. When he won you showered him with compliments, and when he lost you babied him beyond all belief. Sometimes you swore you could hear him pouting over the phone, his bottom lip poking out just the slightest. Now that you were back in his arms, he squeezed you as tight as he could without hurting you.
"Miss me, honey?"
You nodded against his chest as he rested his hand against the back of your neck. "You know I did."
He hummed and began to move his hand up and down your back lovingly. With a deep breath he led you to the shiny gold doors of the elevator. The exterior of the building was very misleading to what was on offer on the inside. The gold and marble patterns covered every free inch of space to the point of making your eyes hurt. Shawn's hands roamed all over your body in the short time it took the elevator to reach the top floor of the hotel. You melted under his restrained touch. The flowers were gorgeous and the hotel was campy fun, but you would've been happy in a rundown old house as long as you were spending time with Shawn.
Entering your room, your smile spread so wide across your face that your lips started to hurt.
Hearts, hearts, hearts…
Everywhere!
The vanity mirror, the bed, even the large window facing out into the trees was heart shaped. The real pièce de résistance of the suite was the huge, candy red heart bathtub in the center. Two glasses of champagne bubbled away by the edge of the tub as Shawn reached down to make sure the water was still warm. He seemed especially proud of the massive amount of bubbly foam that filled the heart. Shawn scooped up some of the bubbles and blew them out at you playfully. His clothes flew off of him with a grace that took quite a bit of control. You could see the effort he exerted painted plainly across his face and your heart floated. Even in his excitement he still wanted to look as sexy as possible for you.
Your own clothes fell beside you slowly. You took even longer to actually get in the tub for Shawn's benefit. There was something about the look in his eyes that made you feel like you were on top of the world. His soapy hand held onto the other champagne glass carefully to hand it over to you. You took a sip of it and floated over to him to plant a kiss on his lips that felt exceptionally chaste  in contrast to the lovey dovey theming surrounding you.
"I hope there's more of that coming." Your golden retriever of a man winked a blue eye at you, the charm incapable of being turned off.
"That and more, sweetheart."

New Fanbinding! Two fics by KouriArashi
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now that the gift copies for @gingersnapwolves have arrived (and how quick the post was this time, I'm in awe!), I can post about my latest fanbinding project.
I had decided on binding both fics about, uhm, two years ago? XD I love all of Kouri's CQL fics; she's actually the reason I started watching the show in the first place, so it was a no-brainer to bind some of her fics!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think I did the typset for "The Way It Wasn't" in 2021 but I had a specific design idea for the case in mind and didn't feel confident to tackle that just yet, so the printed version sat around for... a while. Sometime after that, I did the typeset for "Picking Up the Pieces", which took longer because of the photo edits.
I finally got around to actually making the books in May and I'm very pleased with the results, though there were a lot of stumbling blocks in both projects and I'm actually surprised that the finished books look good. XD I was sure I'd case in the block upside down after all the other mishaps, but at least I didn't do that. XD (I might have checked each book like five times, though... just in case. XD)
More pictures and info about the process behind the cut.
The books are supposed to be the first in a series of 5, each focussing on one of the great sects, and so I decided to use the same basic design ideas: colour-coded for the sect, the cut-out on the front, the little graphic on the back, same brand of Parisian marbled paper, frontispiece depicting the location, sect logo as title page, same design for titling on the spine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For some reason, my camera refuses to really catch the foil colour from "Picking Up the Pieces" on the titling - it's a light pink/ rosé coloured foil.
The planned design for that book really caused me quite some grief, because it turned out that the foil I'd wanted to use (a light lilac one) did not work on this kind of book cloth. It's only for using a laminator / hot iron and so also doesn't work on paper with a foil pen.
I changed the colours for that books so often, going to a coated lilac cloth (where the foil works because it's coated...) but that didn't look good with the light coloured paper I used with the logo (no contrast), so I went back to this cloth and went looking for another foil. I tried rosegold which was okay, but then I lucked out and got the light pink one at a local shop.
Tumblr media
For "The Way It Wasn't", I used a lot of official art:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For "Picking Up th Pieces", I used a mix of (edited) official art and photo edits I made myself. The "problem" of this fic is that Lan Wangji starts living at Lotus Pier, wearing Jiang colours most of the time and no forehead ribbon.
Also, Jiang Yanli is now sect leader and needed some fancy clothes. Luckily, Xuan Lu has acted in a lot of dramas recently where she wore some more dramatic robes that would fit a sect leader. I had to do colour edits of the robes at times and at one point had to photoshop Lan Wangji into a picture with her. My old Photoshop did not like all of this but I managed in the end. XD
I'm pleased with the results and might make a post with the photo edits at one point.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also asked Kouri about her fancast for the OC Yu Zhiyi; that was a while ago. I wanted to include a picture of the character but didn't want to choose someone at random if Kouri already had someone in mind. Of course, I never mentioned that this was for the book; it was supposed to be a surprise after all! ;D
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm really pleased with how the books turned out, especially considering all the stuff that went wrong in making the cases... XD I guess I can say I learned some things? XD
It's always fun if you mess up something on one case and think, "Ah well, this will be my copy then, I guess!" and then you mess up even worse on the other case! XD So Kouri got the book with more air bubbles in the logo because on the other case, the title was crooked. Argh!
Tumblr media
I added some ornaments to distract a bit from that. It's also important to know that I'm a bit OCD about titles and stuff being crooked, I just hate it. This was a very sad moment for me.
But that's always the danger when fumbling around with that flimsy foil and the print-out. I'll live! :D
