FNV Minor Character Poll - Round 3-A, Day 3
Tumblr media
Left: Francine & James Garret, proprietors of the Atomic Wrangler.
—Francine Garret: "No one steals from the Garret Twins! If you can kill that bastard [McCaffery] and bring back as much as you can, you'll be paid very well."
Right: Trudy, proprietor of the Goodsprings Saloon.
—"Other than rolling around once in awhile, [Victor] doesn't do anything useful as far as I can tell. I don't know why it took an interest in you, but I'd be careful. It's never helped anyone before. It acts friendly enough, but I don't trust that whole 'cheerful cowboy' act. I find it all very creepy."

Francine always hires bounty hunters to go after some asshole who as harmed one of the sex workers
James is more of a sleezebag so he really doesn't care but Francine absolutely does care about how her sex workers are treated and will pay a lot of money to have the head of some asshole who harmed one of her sex workers

Courier asks! 10-15
Doing these for Maxie since he did start out as my courier. Most of these will be for his pre-Commonwealth time before he became Minutemen Colonel in main canon.
10. where were they born/raised? when/why did they leave?
Maxie was born in pre-war Paris on the 17th of October 2055 and left sometime in 2059 since his parents split up. His father Julian took him to Sanctuary Hills, Boston where he remained until a week before the 23rd of October 2077, when reports of suspected nuclear war came in, and then he was escorted to Vault 198 because all those who were going to residents of this Vault were taken in early due to all of them having some sort of disability or disorder, and Maxie was paralysed from the waist down at the time, although he had regained some feeling in his left arm.
11. when, why and how did they become a courier? how long did they remain a courier before benny shot them?
Maxie became a courier because at the time that was the only job he could get given his hybrid appearance, and at the time more couriers were needed and were pretty much hiring any old jackass. The length of time is still a little up in the air but it was at least ~10 years given the canon FNV timeline and trying to incorporate that into his story even though I’m not sure whether I’ll be including ALL the DLCs as of yet. But Lonesome Road definitely will be included.
12. how did the bullet affect them?
Maxie ended up with retrograde amnesia after being shot (meaning he lost a lot of his memories from before the event) so he can struggle to recall his past. He also ended up with suffering from migraines and he always has some degree of chronic headaches (but he can tolerate them at a base pain level). Occasionally the migraines can be so severe that he can’t do anything due to the pain and even stimpaks and Med-X don’t help much.
13. how did they deal with benny?
Before Maxie learned that Benny was a bit of a chickenshit, he fully intended to return his bullet (in his own words). But by the time he actually caught up to Benny in the Strip, he learned that the man wasn’t quite as confident as he thought he was.
Benny was like ‘what in the goddamn’ and Maxie just grinned and said “Well if it ain’t my little buddy Benny.” The two went somewhere private and Maxie confronted Benny on why he was shot and what he wanted with the Platinum Chip, and when Benny explained the situation, Maxie was like “well you coulda just asked, jackass.”
Benny THEN argued that he thought he was putting Maxie out of his misery due to his ‘freakish appearance’ and that’s when Maxie pulled out the .44 Magnum he’d concealed, saying that “if that’s the way you wanna play it, I ain’t gonna think twice about returning your fucking bullet. I gave you the benefit of the doubt so don’t fuck it up.” And by this point Maxie has built up his confidence and is less willing to allow people to walk over him due to being a hybrid. More discussions over what the Platinum Chip can do and how it shouldn’t be allowed to fall into Mr. House’s hands.
“They say the house always wins, but not this time.” Benny showed the Chip to show that he still had it and then explained that he wanted to work towards making New Vegas independent. Maxie knew that the NCR and the Legion had their eyes on the place and he didn’t like either of them (well he hates the NCR less but still…) and he’d met Mr. House and wasn’t really keen on him either. So to him, independent route was the best even though he still hasn’t forgiven Benny for putting a bullet in his head.
14. what’s their reputation with the ncr / the legion?
He’s very much hated by the Legion and he hates them too. He despises the way they treat women and while he was on a shaky truce with the Legion to speak with Caesar, he’d worn a Legion disguise and had been secretly arming the slaves in the Fort (most of them women) and telling them that the signal would be a shotgun blast, and when they heard that, they were to break out of the cages and kill any Legionary they saw. After that he went to Caesar’s tent and found out that Caesar had a tumour that was to be operated on, and he wanted a doctor. Maxie reluctantly agreed and went to speak with Arcade, but Arcade wanted nothing to do with the Legion. Instead the doctor helped Maxie fashion a doctor outfit that wouyld fit him. He returned to Caesar, who was confused that he’d come back alone. Maxie explained that the doctor he’d gone to didn’t want anything to do with him and Maxie had been trained quickly. Caesar accepted this with doubt but allowed Maxie to begin.
At that point Maxie reached into his coat and Caesar awaited the anaesthesia. Maxie simply grinned and said. “Ever heard of shotgun surgery?” before proceeding to pull out his shotgun and blow Caesar’s head off. The blast was loud and that was the signal that the slaves had been waiting for. They broke out of their cages and proceeded to fight their way out of the Fort, leaving no Legionary alive. Maxie walked out of the Fort while the fighting was going on and told the now former slaves that he’d get them all back safely.
Meanwhile, his relationship with the NCR isn’t much better. He doesn’t like their militant attitude and the only reason he even has any sort of positive association with them is so he can go to their bars and drink their booze. In essence he tolerates them but ultimately dislikes them.
15. what do the people in freeside think of them? the followers, the kings, the garrets, the van graffs?
The people of Freeside were wary at first but grew to like him, and he has a reputation for being a bit of a prolific gambler to the point that he got himself banned from the Atomic Wrangler.
He’s very favourable with the Followers of the Apocalypse and has a particular liking for Arcade. And yes, he’s persuaded Arcade into bed with him :P
The Kings like him as he’s done many favours for them, and the King entrusted him with Rex.
The Garrets actually really like Maxie. James was happy after Maxie found him some very good escorts and felt bad about ultimately banning him from the casino, but continued to let him in for drinks and the like. He has a bit more of a tense relationship with Francine but he likes her enough.
The Van Graffs are tricky. On one hand Maxie likes Gloria and how she can handle the plasma weapons, but when she’s hunting down Rose of Sahron Cassidy, she falls out of his favour a little since he rather likes Cass and doesn’t want to see her killed by Gloria’s borther Jean-Baptiste Cutting. Instead of taking Cass to them, he warns Cass to stay away from Freeside and the Strip, then reports to Jean-Baptiste that Cass is already dead.

FNV Minor Character Poll - Round 2-A, Day 3
Tumblr media
Left: Francine & James Garret, proprietors of the Atomic Wrangler. —James Garret: "Most might view us as drug dealing enablers around here, but honestly we care about our patrons. It's bad business for people to get addicted. We've got enough crime in Freeside without a bunch of strung-out junkies robbing traders and gamblers to afford their next fix."
Right: Melissa Watkins, an Initiate in the Brotherhood of Steel. —"The lockdown is lifted! The patrols are going to start up again! Do you know what this means? I'll actually be able to get into a real fight! I wonder what it'll be against? Raiders? Radscorpions? Deathclaws? Oh, I can't wait."

Preliminary Voting Round Masterpost
Hello! This tournament is massive. Very massive. There's somewhere close to 200 named characters in Fallout: New Vegas, but even after disqualifying the characters too important for this poll and eliminating some other characters still, there was more than 150 left. So that's why we're having preliminary voting rounds starting Monday, April 3rd.
[PRELIMINARY VOTING ROUNDS HAVE CONCLUDED]
What is a preliminary voting round?
Preliminary voting rounds ("prelims") are not the FNV Minor Character Poll proper. Prelims are a series of 16 multi-man free-for-all polls that will occur before the tournament itself starts, or is even seeded, where candidate characters with key similarities are grouped together. Only the most popular choice or choices from these free-for-all polls will earn the chance to get seeded in the actual tournament.
What is the point of prelims?
In addition to thinning out the herd, prelims prevent the final bracket from being clogged up by too many characters who don't particularly have a lot that makes them uniquely interesting. We don't need every single officer in the NCR or every single member of the Mojave Brotherhood in the tournament, for example, but some characters who fill the same niche may not be aligned enough in their goals to pair together (for example, Thomas Hildern and Angela Williams are not a paired entrant, but Francine and James Garret are). Many of these characters in the prelims are low seeds already, so these preliminary rounds ensure that only characters who can cross a certain threshold of popularity can get into the tournament in the first place.
So just to be clear, the characters in the prelims are not every single character that's going to be in the actual tournament?
Correct. For example, there are other Powder Ganger characters with guaranteed seeds who are not included in the group of Powder Gangers who need to qualify in a prelim first. However, note that characters that do not qualify in their prelim are guaranteed to not be in the actual tournament. If they lose their prelim, then they've lost before the tournament's even begun!
I thought this was a tournament for unpopular characters?
Not all unpopular characters are equally unpopular, and besides, minor does not equal unpopular, or even necessarily obscure.
What is the structure and schedule of the prelims?
There are sixteen total prelim polls. Each poll will feature anywhere from two to seven characters, and only the highest-voted character or characters will earn a place in the real tournament. In some prelims, only the first winner will move on. In others, the top two or even the top three will earn spots. It depends on the size of the prelim and the type of characters in the prelim. There will be two prelims every day from Monday, April 3rd through Monday, April 10th.
What if there's a tie?
In the event of tied results, I will privately flip a coin (or generate a random number, if it's more than two tied candidates) in real life to determine which of the tied candidates qualify. I know that that's pretty low-tech and anti-climactic, but at this stage of things, It's really not that serious.
What happens after the prelims?
Once all of the prelims have been decided, the victors of the prelims will be added to the tournament seed list, which includes all of the characters that didn't need to go through prelims to qualify. I will then seed the tournament from the highest seed (1) to the lowest seed (104), and the actual tournament will be able to begin once that's done.
How did you determine which characters needed to qualify through prelims, or how to group them together?
It's all subjective. Tournament seeding is always subjective to a degree, and this is just an extension of seeding. I thought that this would be a better idea than just making yet another judgement call of my own, though. Audience participation!
So with all that said, what are the prelim groups?
I'm glad you asked. This list will be updated with the results of each prelim to reveal the winners.
