Most stuff below. Lots of rambling.
So. Flatland. It's a good book, and an amazing f*cking movie. I love this goddamned movie so much bro. It's not even like a "good" good movie I just really like it for no reason.
Some lore I have with this book, since I want to talk about it.
I watched this movie the first time when I was in 6th grade. It scared me so bad that I had nightmares about it for a week. I hated the style of the 2D world and was so scared about the amount of murder that I psychologically blocked it all out.
Now in the present (as an adult in college), my friend brought up the movie for us to watch during a movie night. I was way more excited to watch it than I thought I would be (cuz of my previous encounter with it and wanting to "reclaim" the movie), but we only got 4 minutes in before my other friends got bored and decided to watch something else. I sorta dropped it for a bit after that before @/goosesartblog posted their ONE - Flatland crossover and 10000 emotions flew over me. I then proceeded to watch it with my siblings, who also did not care about the movie.
Now, it has become a lifestyle of watching it every single day. Every. Single. Day. It's bad. I can't stop.
And it's on YouTube for free.
AND the book is on YouTube as an audiobook AND the actual PDF book is just there to read.
PLEASE. I NEED PEOPLE TO NOT BE NORMAL WITH ME.
Anyways, actual relevant doodles. These characters are A. Sphere (the objectively best character idgaf) and Carlton Cube(?). I saw something about them being John-locked and thought it was really funny. Also, I saw a meme about the two getting Starbucks or smth during the week I lingered, so here lol.
Some more doodles of concept stuff. Actual A. Square art and some style testing, Hex doodle, and more A. Sphere bc I love him so much. His ass is gay idk if you think I'm wrong just look at him.
Silly little idea I had about if Spherious *(the sphere from the other Flatland movie) and A. Sphere were in the same universe. It's unlikely, but I think Spherious would be the Messiah of 2000 and A. Sphere is the Messiah of 3000. They met at some point where their lives overlapped, and Spherious tried to give A. Sphere advice, to which he was completely ignored. A. Sphere's a bratty teen here and Spherious is a grandpa. They treat their apostles very differently.
Another silly idea I had was that when A. Sphere "died", he was actually picked up by a 4D being named A. Tesseract. He stays with her until the war is over in his dimension, and he is able to see A. Square one last time during his hallucination (that's why A. Sphere's innards are seen). Also also, A. Sphere learns how to treat people better b/c of A. Tesseract and the 4th dimensions' more liberal views on expression and gender. Development for the stupid shiny solid.

I'm just currently hyperfixating (I think?) on Monday Fight Rankin and it's corresponding au Ghost Town, but I have been making art of the others

Jeremy AKA Germs and Proffesor Square ♡
My flatland OCs (pics and info)
I prefer to draw them in the simple shape style (no organs no other features) unlike my other characters hehe
I couldn't come up with names for them so Mr. Square and Germs were placeholders but they stuck.
Info below
Mr. or Proffesor Square is a teacher at an elementary school. He was offered higher positions or teaching advanced things but he preferred staying with the kids. He's very fond of them and is aware that teaching the youth is super important and the school system kinda sucks.
He even teaches to girls at certain moments under the excuse of 'well they're just gonna learn the art of Feeling and proper lady manners! (definetly not teaching them life lessons and addition haha)'
He had a wife, but she and his daughter died during birth, and he couldn't see himself with any other woman. He dedicated himself instead to educating children and helping at orphan homes.
When he first got the job at his school, there already was a Criminal class Isosceles subject for the Feeling lessons. The poor man had been at that school for quite a while before Mr. Square had arrived, and died in a few days.
The proffesor was horrified at this, and how easily another Isosceles had been brought in, and Mr. Square being expected to make sure the poor creature wasn't a threat to his students. He was told not to feed "it", though a lenient director said he could if it came from his own money, and warned that this would be the only thing he could do for "it", to not speak to it, and then added lightheartedly that Isosceles, starved as this specimen, had an insatiable hunger.
The Isosceles was a boy, though he was very long, could not be possibly more than a teenager or fresh into physical maturity, and his intellect and behavior helped little to support the idea of him being older. After many Feeling sessions his formidable acute angle– while still dangerous– became softer.
The boy had no name, and very reduced verbal ability. Mr. Square treated him like the son he never had. He gave him the name "Jeremy", which the boy seemed to like. Later on, when he had better grasp on words, Jeremy started to joke and gave himself the nickname "Germs", a funny reference to his unfortunate position, the lowest of the low class, and constantly Felt by grubby toddlers.
Mr. Square could do little to save him, but in secret took him out on walks, fed him, and spoke to him. He cared for Germs despite everything and being looked down upon by his superiors. Saying he was as sentimental as a Woman. He didn't care, but he was still at a loss on how to truly save him.
Germs told him something that seemed even more eerie as he considered his innocent tone. That the only way out was death for him.
What could he do? Stage his death and hide him in his big empty house? … Well I'm still not sure. Should he try?

Here’s a random sketch I did of an OC, Prince Huxley of the Parchment Palace, his own imaginary kingdom in his twisted, warped mind! He may only be a child, but he has quite the control over the paper terrain, and though it may be papyrus, it can be as fragile as glass or as strong as steel if he wills it to be. Everything in the flatlands in under his control; he can build up structures and tear them down just as easily, creating a full castle in just seconds. His only problem, though; he cannot create a being. He was kinda created in my dream, so... I don’t really sleep well? Also, if you don’t like him, hate my dreams not me lol (i guess that’d be the same thing tho idk)

They both move like snakes. Liz enters and goes right, turns as if she will go north, but then sharply turns again and heads south. She meets Ruth, who emerges from the bottom. They move closer to one another until their front points touch, a little black heart appears then disappears as this happens. Liz then backs up and turns right to leave. Ruth follows and stops in front her, as if wanting to touch front points with her again. This causes Liz to quickly halt and back up, before playfully dodging past Ruth and out of frame. Ruth watches Liz leave and then quickly follows in her path. The screen is left empty for a second before the animation repeats itself.

- Mr Adam Siglon, your local old stickler square. The official advisor for Chief Circle and his family, and will make sure you’re very aware of this fact. He knows all about the legal side of things and is well informed in his role, but he would much rather pester the Circles in his free time. He’s not very popular, as you can imagine, and is often holed up with work in his office beside the boiler room. Whenever he’s not in his office, however, he’s usually found tagging along after the youngest Circle trying to “guide him on his life’s path” (and pushing his personal guard into the wall or tripping him up). He’s also very intrigued by the so-called ‘Ghost Girl of Circle Estate’. He’s been trying to catch her for almost two years now, but has never been able to prove her existence to anyone. Yet, that is.

Getting a little too philosophical over Shape Book
feel free to skip on this rambling - I will return to normal posting soon enough, just been thinking a lot.
TL;DR: Cy thinks about what Mr. Abbott would think.
Y'know, after writing so much about Flatland - and I will most certainly continue to write about it - I've kinda been thinking.
About Mr. Abbott specifically - what would he think of all of this?
When he wrote Flatland, did he just.. not bother thinking about any of this like the biology and culture of the bidimensional world, or he did and just didn't find it fitting or had no time to put it in the book? Once he finished it.. did he continue thinking about A. Square and Lord Sphere and everything else or did it just kind of go into a neat little corner of his brain (considering it didn't really get a lot of attention back in the day)
I've never really bothered to think about an afterlife or care about dead people (even considering I was the kind of kid who "Pondered the mysteries of the Sphinx", thinking about existential stuff a lot etc, what God could be, etc) til now, cuz I'm just curious.
If there is one - and he could just look down at our world whenever he wanted or check back on what has become of his work... what would he think?
Put aside the fact I wrote about homosexual shapes or find A Sphere real darn cute..
Look at all the people - Ladd's film, the original characters and fanfiction on one side and the speculative biology and culture on another, Planiverse, Flatterland.. - did Abbott ever want to make his own little characters? Did he ever expect someone to do all of this for his work? What would he think of all we've done? What would he think of the headcanons, the humanized Flatlanders, the OCs, the world we've created from his..
I hope he's proud, because his funny shape book makes us all go a little rabid.
I kinda just want to go up - upward yet not "upward", wherever he is if he's anywhere - or have had all of this happen somehow in the 1880's and just ask him. But like "I" (Cy the Line) said in the funny shape fanfic - old time, eaten time - we can't talk to him in this life nor can we be sure we will in the next ball - or if we'll remember such a thing at that moment.
