Now that Y/n knew about Peter’s alter ego, everything about him seemed to make sense. His frequent absences at school, the random bruises that showed up on his face, the looks Ned sent his way whenever someone was talking about the Avengers or Spider-Man… Everything made sense.
After all, Peter wasn’t just a normal teenager. Neither was Y/n. Although she would have preferred to still be a normal girl, since that would mean her father wasn’t dead, Y/n was far from being normal.
In the weeks following her meeting with Peter, she began to control her ability a little more every day. Every time she trained she could get just a little deeper in someone’s mind and surprisingly enough, the buzzing slowly disappeared. Her walls were stronger now and she didn’t have to think about it all the time for them to stay in place. They were always there, thick as a castle wall and for the first time in a little over two years she could breathe.
And also, for the first time in forever, she could enjoy spending some time with friends. And she did enjoy every second of it. Every movie night, every lunch at school, every walk to school with Peter in the morning… everything.
Peter… Peter was great. He truly was. A little shy and clumsy, but still awesome. As she was getting to know him better, Y/n realised that he was so much more than Spider-Man. Yes, his whole life was built around that, but he still was his own person. Peter Parker was someone more than Spider-Man, and he was someone she was getting to appreciate more and more every day. His little attentions, the pink tint on his cheek, his childish giggles whenever they would go to Delmar’s… Y/n couldn’t get tired of it.
At first, she had thought that MJ was jealous. Well, not just thought. She had known the girl was jealous. But the jealousy hadn’t lingered long and MJ even seemed to approve how Peter and Y/n were getting closer.
Not that something had happened. Nothing had happened, Peter was a lot too shy to even do something and Y/n had no idea how relationships worked. So they both just let things go with the flow, both waiting to see where it would take them. After all, they still were young and they had a whole life in front of them to figure what there was between them.
“I hid something in the gym, look into my mind to find it”, Rhodes repeated, getting Y/n out of her own thoughts.
She groaned. “I can’t do that, I can only see your memories, you know.”
“Well, I remember hiding it so you should be able to find it”, Rhodes smirked.
Y/n rolled her eyes. “Unless it’s something real important to you, the memory won’t be strong enough in your mind.”
Rhodes sighed. “I didn’t want to tell you but it’s your present for Christmas so if you don’t find it, no gift for you.”
Y/n chuckled, shaking her head, before closing her eyes and lowering the walls, searching for Rhodes’ mind. She saw explosions, heard a laugh and saw Tony smiling. The usual with Rhodes. She pushed the memories away to get deeper in his head. Soon enough, she saw him wrapping a small box in bright red wrapping paper and then she saw the gym.
She got up from the chair she was sat in, keeping her eyes closed, and she followed Rhodes’ memory to where the gift was hidden, in the corner of the room. She opened her eyes and saw the red gift. She picked it up, a small smile on her lips, before walking back to the chair in front of Rhodes.
She sat down as the smile grew bigger.
“You didn’t have to get me something”, she playfully scolded him.
“It’s only normal”, Rhodes shrugged. “With all the progress you made in the last month you deserved something.”
“Can I risk shaking it?”
Rhodes burst out laughing. “Just open it.”
Y/n chuckled as she tore the red paper apart, revealing the small box she had seen in Rhodes’ head.
“You know, I could have seen what the gift is”, she smiled.
Rhodes shook her head. “I’m not the one who’s bought it just to make sure that wouldn’t happen.”
“So you don’t even know what it is?”
“I know what it is, I just don’t know how it looks.”
Y/n furrowed her brows, a smirk on her lips. “Okay then.”
She rested her gaze back on the box. It was a black box, simple but somehow elegant. She opened it to reveal a silver necklace. She picked it up and it shone in the light.
“How much did that cost?” she asked, her eyes round as she realized a little diamond was set in the pendant, which was in the shape of a bird, the diamond being its eye.
“Not telling”, Rhodes chuckled.
Y/n rolled her eyes and then tried to put the necklace on.
“Wait, let me help”, Rhodes said as he moved to her side.
Once the necklace was around her neck, Y/n gently grazed the pendant with a finger. “It’s beautiful.”
“I’m glad you like it”, Rhodes proudly said. “I would have given it to you on Christmas but since we’re all celebrating apart this year, I figured giving it to you right now was better.”
“Thank you.” Y/n raised her head to look at Rhodes. “I’m sorry I didn’t get you something.”
“Oh, don’t worry about this, it’s okay.”
Y/n smiled to him and then quickly got up to engulf him in a hug. Rhodes chuckled as he gently patted her on the back.
“I’ll let you go already, someone told me they wanted to bring you somewhere tonight.”
Y/n raised her head to send him a questioning look. “What?”
“Hey Y/n”, a voice said behind her.
She let go of Rhodes and turned around, surprised that she hadn’t noticed that another mind was in the room.
Peter was standing there, wearing his navy coat. He had a soft smile on his lips and a pink tint on his cheeks. Whether it was because of the cold or because he was shy, Y/n wasn’t quite sure, but a bright smile spread on her lips as her eyes found his.
“Hey, Pete”, she said, moving towards him. “What are you doing here?”
“Uh, I wanted to… uh… I…” he stuttered and then ran a hand through his hair to calm himself down. “Do you want to go see the Rockefeller Christmas tree with me?”
“Don’t you have some duties tonight?” Y/n enquired as her heartbeat picked up in her chest, which didn’t go unnoticed to Peter.
Peter’s gaze fell to the floor as his cheeks started to burn even more. “Is that a no?”
“Oh my God, no, yes, no”, Y/n stuttered. “I mean yes I’d like to go.”
Peter’s eyes shot up to hers and the smile came back to his lips. “Great.”
They both stood there for a moment, smiling, not moving at all towards the exit.
“I don’t want to interrupt your moment but you guys should go if you want to actually geet to the Rockefeller center”, Rhodes interjected.
Peter chuckled. “Yeah, uh, right.”
Y/n started to walk towards the coat hanger where she had left her coat and her scarf. “I didn’t eat yet though, should we stop somewhere to eat first?”
“Uh, there’s a McDonald on the way if you want”, Peter suggested as he followed her.
“Sounds amazing”, Y/n smiled. “Happy’s driving us?”
The man walked in at that moment. “Yeah, I am. We better get moving, Tony needs me later.”
Y/n finished wrapping her scarf around her head and grabbed her coat. “I’m ready.”
They all moved towards the exit and Y/n texted her mother to tell her she was going to spend the evening with Peter. Her mother replied saying she already knew and for a moment Y/n wondered if she really was a telepath because everyone around her seemed to know already.
She studied Peter’s profile as she walked next to him and she noticed how his gaze stubbornly stayed on the back of Happy’s head. Oh well.
“Are MJ and Ned coming?” she asked once they were sat in the back of Happy’s car.
Peter shot her a look and he was really thankful that it was already dark outside because he could feel the blood rushing to his cheeks. “Uh, no, not supposed but I can ask them if you want…”
“Oh, going just with you sounds awesome”, Y/n said and she too was thankful for the dark.
Peter glanced at her, a grin on his lips. “Then we’re good.”
Y/n chuckled and rested her attention back to the world outside of the car.
She watched the busy traffic of New York City, wondering if going to see the Rockefeller Christmas tree with Peter was considered a date. Was it?
Not that it was the first time they hung out just the two. The fact that they both were teens a little different from the rest had brought them closer. Which was understandable. For the first time Peter had someone he could really talk to about how he wanted to be an Avenger because Y/n was training to be one. And for the first time, Y/n had someone that didn’t care about her ability and didn’t think she was a freak for it.
They went to the drive-thru of a McDonalds and they ate in the car as Happy drove towards the Rockefeller center. A moment later, Happy dropped them off. “Have fun kids”, he said over his shoulder.
Y/n and Peter both thanked him before getting out of the car. Peter walked around the car to join Y/n on the sidewalk.
“You ready?” he asked.
Y/n’s eyes shone brighter for a moment as she nodded vigorously. “I hope you’re aware that this is my favourite thing to do for Christmas.”
Peter chuckled. “Somebody may have told me.”
Y/n furrowed her brows. “Who?”
“I mean, we don’t have a lot of people in common, don’t we?” Peter said.
Y/n thought about it for a moment. “Mr. Stark?”
Peter nodded slowly.
“Oh well”, Y/n said and for some reason her cheeks burned. “Why would Tony tell you that?”
Peter ran his hand through his hair and then shrugged his shoulders. “Uh… I don’t know, I may have asked if, you know, if you’d like to go, but uh, I… I… I didn’t want to ask…”
“Cause you were scared I’d say no?” Y/n cut his rambling.
Peter shot her a look and then his gaze fell to the icy concrete sidewalk. “Maybe?”
“Well, I’m here now, am I not?” Y/n said.
Peter’s gaze shot to her face as his heartbeat picked up. “Yeah, you are.”
Y/n looked around her to the people walking around them, hurriedly, as if the world was going to end if they didn’t slow the rhythm. “Should we go?”
Peter’s lips spread into a soft smile. “Yeah.”
They moved toward the tree and Y/n took a deep breath.
This was a bad idea, she realized as she took another step forward. Yes, she loved the tree. Yes, it was her favourite thing to do. But it had been her favourite thing to do with her dad, and now she was going to go with Peter.
Every year ever since she was born she had come here with her father. Just her father. Not her mother, not Tony or Pepper or anyone. Just her father. But when Peter had suggested it earlier, she hadn’t thought about her father. He hadn’t even crossed her mind once. And now she was feeling bad, so bad for it. She had promised that she wasn’t going to forget him but here she was forgetting.
She stopped in her tracks and Peter glanced at her over his shoulder, stopping a couple of steps in front of her. “Are you alright?”
Y/n kept her gaze on the concrete and she took a deep breath. “I used to come here with my father”, she simply said.
And Peter understood. He understood because he too had lost his parents and Uncle Ben. He knew how hard it was. But Y/n had never talked about her father before. He only knew he was dead because Mr. Stark had told him.
“We can leave if you prefer”, he quickly said, cursing himself mentally for suggesting the Rockefeller center instead of Central Park or something.
Y/n shook her head. “No”, she refused. “I’m good, we can go.”
“Are you sure?” Peter enquired. “We can go to Central Park or Times Square or…”
Y/n walked to Peter and grabbed his hand. “No, we’re going. I gotta stop letting the past stop me from doing something I love.”
And although there were tears pricking at her eyes, she knew that that was what her father would have wanted.
Peter followed her, not saying anything because he was afraid she was going to break down if he was to say something. Also, her hand in his felt great somehow and he didn’t want her to take it away. So he stayed silent and just concentrated on slowing the beats of his heart.
A moment later, they stopped as the tree appeared right there in front of them, brighter than ever. It was tall, the tallest tree Y/n had seen, or was it just because she hadn’t seen it in a while? She glanced to Peter, whose face was illuminated by the Christmas lights of the tree and somehow, she forgot about the pain in the bottom of her heart.
Two years. It had been two years since her father had passed away. She hadn’t come here in two years but now she was there and Peter was holding her hand and maybe everything would be alright.
Peter’s eyes found hers and he smiled and brushed his thumb on the back of Y/n’s hand. Her heart stopped in her chest and she smiled back but then looked away.
Peter wasn’t her dad and she would have done everything, anything to bring her dad back. But she wasn’t going to think about that. She pushed the thoughts away and concentrated on the warmth of Peter’s hand in hers. Everything was going to be alright if only she could focus on Peter’s hand and on his brown eyes shining in the light.
“My dad passed away two years ago”, Y/n said and her words fell in the silence between Peter and her, flying from her mouth to Peter’s ears.
He gently squeezed her hand and somehow she found the strength to continue to talk. “He was great you know. Always made sure I was fine. He took care of me as best as he could and it was the best. Definitely the best. Sometimes, I can still see him.”
Peter focused on her hand, on her warmth, because her words were cutting deep in his heart as he thought about his own parents.
“We had a car crash. A stupid car crash and he was fine but… but when we were in the car wreck, Adams came and he… he shot my dad. Right in front of me.” Y/n paused and Peter was scared, so scared for what was to follow. “There is not a single day that I don’t see the hole in his head. But the worst part isn’t even that. It’s the blood on the window. And… and….”
Peter put a hand on her shoulder, but then pulled her into a hug. “Hey, it’s okay, we don’t have to talk about this.”
“My father died and Adams said he was going to come for me. Peter, there isn’t a day that I’m not scared he will.”
“Do you want to go back to Aunt May’s?” Peter gently suggested after pulling away, his hand still in hers.
Y/n nodded and Peter quickly messaged Happy, keeping Y/n’s hand in his to make sure she was going to be alright.
He knew she would. He was alright and he too had lost more than he should have. Not that he had seen what had happened to his parents. He couldn’t even imagine how much Y/n must have been hurt by the situation. And he felt sorry, oh so sorry, but there was nothing he could do other than to hold her hand and hope that it was enough to anchor her into the present.
“I’m sorry”, Y/n eventually apologized. “It’s just… coming here makes me think of him and thinking of him… I can’t forget the end. It’s burned into my mind.”
“Y/n, listen to me”, Peter gently said. “I know you’re hurting, I’m better placed than anyone to know this. And I just want you to know that it’s alright that you’re hurting. It’s okay and it’s normal and it doesn’t make you weaker or anything. You have the right to be hurting. I just want you to know that I’m here. I’m here for you and I’ll always be there.”
Her eyes filled with tears as she found Peter’s gaze. “Thanks, Pete”, she gently whispered.
She knew she should have said that she was there for him too, but right now all she could do was to mutter those two words out. If she said another word, she knew she was going to break down to pieces. And she didn’t want to. So she stayed silent and held his hand tighter.
When Happy came, Peter gently guided Y/n towards the car. He opened the door for her and waited until she was sat and buckled up before shutting the door and walking around the car to sit on the other side. Once he was, he grabbed Y/n’s hand and held it all the way home, not saying anything because there was nothing to say that was going to make her forget about her father.
When Happy dropped them off next to their block, Peter hesitated to ask Y/n if she wanted to come home with him. But when she raised her head to look at him with those lost puppy eyes, he knew he had to let her come.
“Come, we’ll watch The Office”, Peter gently said and he guided her upstairs.
He tried to ignore the aching beats of his own heart. Seeing her this way had made him think of his parents, of how he had lost them so young. And about Uncle Ben, who had died because of him. But right now he had to be there for Y/n, so he pushed his own pain to the side and brought her to Aunt May’s.
Once they were in, Peter said hi to Aunt May and asked her if they could sit in the living room. Aunt May said yes, of course, and they did. Peter turned on the TV and looked over at Y/n, who was sitting on the other side of the couch, her arms around her knees as she was slowly rocking back and forth.
“Hey, you wanna cuddle?” Peter enquired.
Y/n shot him a thankful look and she nodded. “I’d love too.”
She ended up with her head on Peter’s shoulder, his arm loosely thrown around her shoulders and somehow this was the best place on Earth and the pain in her heart slowly decreased.
“I’m sorry”, she eventually said as The Office played in the background. “I fucked the night up.”
“Oh, you didn’t, don’t worry about it”, Peter gently said. “I knew it was going to be hard, Mr. Stark had told me.”
“I loved going with you, don’t take me wrong”, she insisted. “It’s just… You know, sometimes it’s too much and I feel like I’m drowning.”
“I totally understand”, Peter whispered. “I’ve been through a lot too.”
“I know, I’m sorry”, Y/n said, raising her head to look at Peter.
For a moment she was scared from the proximity, but she focused on her walls and Peter smiled.
“Don’t worry about it, it’s okay”, Peter said.
It was a lie, everyone could know that, Y/n didn’t need her telepath’s ability to realize it, but she didn’t say anything. Yes, Peter and she were different from the usual teens but it wasn’t only because of their abilities, but also because they were both broken inside. But maybe, just maybe, they were broken just enough to fit their broken pieces back together.
A while later, when the sixth or seventh episode was playing on the screen, Aunt May gently shook Peter’s shoulder. Y/n’s head had fell in his lap a while ago and they both had fallen asleep, holding on to the other.
Peter looked to Aunt May, running a hand through his hair as a yawn fell from his lips.
“Hey, Peter, it’s getting late”, Aunt May whispered, shooting a worried glance to Y/n.
Peter’s eyes trailed to the clock on the wall and then back to Aunt May’s face. “Right. I’ll wake her up.”
Aunt May nodded. “Take your time, she looks peaceful.”
She walked away and Peter’s eyes fell on Y/n’s sleeping form. She looked beautiful. As she always did. But somehow she seemed so peaceful right now, like an angel, and his heart started beating so loud he was convinced it was going to wake her up.
He put a hand on her shoulder and shook her gently. She rolled over, her head now facing Peter’s stomach. Now Peter’s breath grew ragged and he had to look away for a moment.
He eventually shook her again and she groaned, but this time she opened her eyes. Once she noticed where she was, she sat up so fast Peter was convinced she was going to fall to the ground.
“Hey, woah, you alright?” he said, grabbing her by the shoulders to make sure she wouldn’t fall.
Y/n looked at him, her eyes going from his lips to his eyes to his lips and then back to his eyes. “Yeah, I am, I fell asleep.”
“Noticed that”, Peter chuckled. “It’s getting late, I think it’s time you’d go back home.”
Y/n looked to the clock and yawned. “Right.”
She moved to get up, but Peter’s hands were still on her shoulders. She looked at him and they were so close their noses almost brushed together. Her heart jumped in her throat and she looked away.
“I really gotta go”, she insisted and Peter let go of her.
She got up quickly, not once looking at Peter. She swore that if she did he’d know how fast her heart was beating. Little did she know that he already knew.
She moved towards the door, but then stopped to turn around and look at Peter, who was still sitting on the couch, feeling cold by her absence.
“Thank you for tonight”, Y/n gently said. “I really needed it.”
“No problem, Y/n”, Peter smiled. “Always there for you if you need it.”
He got up to say goodbye and he walked to Y/n, who just waited to see what he was going to do. Peter grabbed her hand absentmindedly, squeezing it gently as Y/n was looking up at him.
“Thank you for coming”, Peter said. “Even though it was hard.”
Y/n smiled but there was a sadness in her eyes. “I had to go someday. The ghosts of the past can’t stop me from living today.”
It was wise, wiser than the words of a sixteen years old should have been but that was how things were.
Y/n looked at Peter and he looked at her and she smiled softly. She moved closer to him and for a moment Peter was convinced that she was going to kiss him but then her lips barely grazed his cheek before she pulled away.
“Good night, Pete”, she said and he let go of her hand.
“Good night, Y/n”, he replied as she opened the door to leave.
She smiled to him over her shoulder but then she shut the door behind her and she was gone. Peter touched his cheek, wondering if his skin was really burning or if it was only his mind and the memory of her lips.
