there is a serious lack of discussion about how mai is zuko’s safe space. we see this in their first appearance together (that’s not a flashback). when mai asks him a simple question, “aren’t you cold?” and zuko, who has a hard time opening up and expressing emotions that aren’t anger or angst, freely and openly starts to tell her his worries about going back to the fire nation. and while people love to chastise mai on her reply, “I just asked if you were cold, I didn’t ask for your whole life story”, I think they misunderstand her approach to this. zuko is worrying and overthinking about something he cannot change, something that will only drive him crazy and she tries to distract him with a joke. and it might fall flat, but she realises this and suddenly she is comforting him with her touch. her hand reaching out so casually towards scar like it’s not a big deal, because it’s not. they’ve known each other for a long time, they’ve grown up together and their relationship was a long time coming. and zuko leans into her hand, and her kiss, without thinking twice about it. because mai is familiar, and mai is comfort and that can be seen when you contrast it to song’s attempting at touch his scar, and how quickly he was to stop her. but it’s not only this moment that showcases mai as his safe space, but also when he’s back in the fire nation. when he’s stressed out and going through a tumultuous time, not knowing what’s right and wrong or what he should do next, it’s mai he goes to. we see this in “nightmares and daydreams” when he spends all day at her house, when he can’t stand being in the palace anymore, mai and her house and her bedroom is his safe space. and here we see her trying to comfort him, trying to say the war meeting is stupid, it would be be boring anyway, and shall we go for a ride around town? it’ll be fun… and even though he’s still sad, he goes back to her house on the day of the war meeting and she’s making him tea. and even when he does get invited to the all day war meeting, she goes to the palace with him and waits for him all day, to see if it went well and to comfort him if it didn’t. when he says that it was everything he thought wanted it to be, she’s immediately happy for him, reaching out to touch him with a smile on her face. mai is who zuko feels safe and comfortable around, even in his vulnerable moments and it’s something we should talk about.

Mai headcanon time.

I think Mai knows about the asylum Azula went to. Not necessarily the details, but enough to know that it is a very bad place. Ukano and Michi probably told her that's where she would get sent if she acted up. After all, they're the reasons she bottled up all of her emotions and was unable to express herself. So it's not that big of a stretch if the place's reputation for troubled Fire Nation girls is well known to people like Azula.

All the more reason for Mai to clam up and be as stoic as she is. After all, being quiet and sitting still is good behavior. And Azula in the Spirit Temple is pretty blatant about what happens to girls that don't show good behavior...

One thing I love about Zuko and Mai as a couple is how snuggly they are with each other!

Like look at them!!!!!!!

They’re all over each other constantly, and it’s so adorable!!!!!!

Even in the beach episode when Zuko is being snappish with Mai and there’s a strain on the relationship…

…they’re still cuddling the whole time!!!!!

And with the family situations they grew up with they’re probably both super touch starved…

…so they seek out physical affection with each other because they don’t get it anywhere else!!!!

It’s so wonderful seeing how much they care for one another in their body language, especially since neither of them are good with words!!!!

Hey there! So sorry this took so long to answer!!! But yes, I 100% agree that Zuko DEFINITELY was anxious about it from the moment the Fire Sages kept pestering him and Mai to start trying for an heir (literally moments after they got married) to when they started trying (many years later), up until Mai gave birth. To say that he had dreams about burning his future child in an Agni Kai was an understatement :( I think though that the anxiety of it definitely decreased as she got closer to giving birth, mostly from the guidance of Iroh and Aang telling him he would be just fine. It also helped that Mai said that she wouldnt want anyone else to be the father of her child :) But let's not forget Mai, either. She definitely had her own anxieties about becoming a mother as well. She didnt want her future child to be shut out like her parents did to her, but she was also afraid that her cold exterior would be too much for a child. As we all headcanon though, Zuko and Mai ended up being great parents. Yes, they probably over extended it and Izumi probably got away with a lot, but they definitely broke the cycle of abuse that they came from with their own families. :)

mai and ty-lee have kissed because they both probably have genuine, vaguely deep rooted romantic feelings for each other

mai and azula have kissed to purely spite zuko (and yknow what ty-lee too)

HOWEVER A KEY ASPECT TO THIS DYNAMIC: azula is completely unaware about the ty-lee and mai thing. it’s uh… better off that way.

i ship this about 50% but like… it’s got to have happened once right? considering all that down time they spent together on a boat away from the repercussions of water tribe society…

also considering they were leaders i doubt the other warriors were in a position to ever call them out on it

Hi there! I am so sorry this took literal YEARS to respond to, and I hope you find this if you are still on tumblr :) NOTE: I promise, I will be better with asks, I just own a small business and its hard to balance personal time but nevertheless, here you go :) - Mai NEVER thought she would be a good Fire Lady. Truthfully, its one of the reasons (besides Zuko talking to Ozai in secret) that she broke up with him. She knew that eventually she would have to become Fire Lady if they continued dating, and she thought a country coming out of being a war monger state deserved a better Fire Lady. - I have always hc that after Smoke and Shadow, Mai left to travel and explore who she was as a woman and what she wanted to be. So after her year of travels away from the Fire Nation, she realized how much she wanted to be in Zuko's life. (I will make a hc on how they reconciled someday) - Once they got married, she looked to Iroh for guidance on what a Fire Lady should be. (I hc that her and Ursa had a very rocky start for a while), so she went to the person that she trusted the most. Iroh told her that she just has to be herself, and be there for Zuko and the nation. The rest would come to fruition :) - She also realized how much pressure Zuko was under when he first became Fire Lord. She was under pressure and she was an adult and not even the main ruler. She realized how she might have been a little too harsh on him to get so upset at him for keeping everything inside, which is what she was doing. So she talked to Zuko about how she was feeling, and he of course was so supportive. He didnt care what kind of Fire Lady the nation got, he was just happy she was by his side :) - She did have some shaky times, with threatening a few of Zuko's counsel with her knives when they threw insults at her husband, to sleeping in late for a very important ceremony despite telling Zuko she would be there, to not being able to give an heir right away (both on purpose for the first few years of their marriage and later on something her and Zuko couldnt control) - But after a few years, she started to become more comfortable and loved her duties. These duties included tending to the gardens in the palace, visiting the hospitals and schools, and leading her own counsel on the orphanages in the Fire Nation. In addition to this, she also would plan all the main events in the palace (this is the one she wasnt as fond of), and also being by Zuko's side for most of the main ceremonies. - And of course, when Izumi came along, Mai loved her main duty of being there for the future Fire Lord and also teaching her different ways to fight, since Izumi isnt a bender (in my hcs) :) Thank you so much for the ask, and so sorry again that is took forever!
