"why do they let characters die to a 2% crit in the tutorial maps?" [A'lear part 2]
Tumblr media
So it turns out the dragon is Queen Lumera, ruler of Lythos and A'lear's mother. Lumera is overjoyed to see her daughter awake again after her thousand year slumber, and despite the latter's missing memories, it's a happy reunion.
A'lear takes a moment to admire a pigeon (wow, a pigeon!) and grab some acorns from the ground. It's possible this is just instinctive dragon hoarding behaviour. It's very adorable.
Queen Lumera turns back into a giant dragon and offers them all a ride on her back. They head to her castle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Exposition time: there are five nations in Elyos. The four human nations, arranged in a ring, are Flowers, Mountains, Snow, and Desert. (Or spring, autumn, winter, and summer, if you prefer. The world map animates falling leaves over the mountain biome.) In the centre of the map lies, Lythos, home of the Divine Dragons — well, the Divine Dragon, singular, last of her kind right up until A'lear woke up this morning.
(oh and there was also a huuuuge landmass where the Fell Dragon ruled, but that's sealed beneath the waves, never to be seen again, never ever.)
A thousand years ago, the Fell Dragon Sombron appeared out of nowhere and fought the Divine Dragons for control of the Twelve Emblems. Once every thousand years, the Twelve Emblems can combine their power to do Plot Device Magic. Last time, they were used to seal the Fell Dragon Sombron away.
Isn't this just the plot of Shadow Dragon and The Sacred Stones?, wonders A'lear.
No, not at all, says Lumera. You see, the Emblems aren't just magic gems; they're magical glowy avatars based on Lords/protagonists from prior Fire Emblem games. It's kind of like cross-marketing — Sigurd fans will want to buy this game to see him, and others meeting him for the first time here will be hyped for the inevitable Genealogy of the Holy War remake.
Who's Sigurd?, asks A'lear.
We'll get to him soon, my child, says Lumera. He's really fun to use in this game, you're going to love him.
So... this is like Fire Emblem Heroes?, asks A'lear.
Well, not exactly like FEH—, says Lumera.
Oh, of course. It's like Fire Emblem Heroes but there's no gacha?
Good gracious!, it's time for training!, says Lumera.
Chapter 2
It's time for training! Lumera summons some Fabrications — glowy humanoid figures with empty eyes, who, she hastens to explain, are totally not like the Corrupted because they're blue instead of red. They're here for a mock battle.
Tumblr media
On my first attempt at this level, an archer scores a 2% critical hit on Clanne, instantly felling him. He bleeds out before a distraught A'lear, whimpering garbled nonsense, while Lumera stands nearby and kindly tells her daughter that she must learn to face her fears, even the fear of those under your care dying in your arms. The real enemy, after all, will not hold back.
Anyway, I reset the chapter.
The second time round, the archer does not crit, and merely sticks an arrow through Clanne's ribs, which his sister immediately heals with magic staff magic.
This map is designed to introduce two key mechanics for this game: Break and Chain Guard.
Break is this game's take on the classic Weapon Triangle, which now uses the same coloured icons as in FEH and looks great. Landing attacks with weapon advantage (sword < lance < axe < sword; daggers/bows/tomes < martial arts) will break the opponent's guard(*), letting your next attack on them go uncountered. It's great for seeing up your glass cannons — let your high-dodge swordmaster chip down the big Handaxe beserker, then your own zero-defense mage can fling a few fireballs safely.
Chain Guard is only available on certain classes: Martial Monk (generic healer), Martial Master (generic healer plus master seal), and Dancer (dancer). These "Qi Adept" units can go into a guard stance, blocking a single hit on behalf of an adjacent ally, and losing 20% HP in the process. Often this is not worth it, but sometimes having your healer go down to 15/25HP saves their 45HP allies from fatal damage.
In my opinion, the coolest thing about Qi Adepts are that these dedicated healer classes can occasionally pull their weight via damage prevention instead—explicitly with Chain Guard; implicitly when they're roundhouse kicking an enemy mage in the face—making them more flexible.
The second coolest thing is that enemy healers are now an active concern on player phase, often standing in the right position to prevent damage — or even a break! — against a boss.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Framme and Clanne help take care of some Fabrications, leaving most of the EXP to A'lear, who handily reaches Level 3. Lumera takes the field, but is defeated with the power of teamwork.
So then she sets up a second drill, in which she pulls out all the stops.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meet Sigurd of Grannvale, from FE4: Genealogy of the Holy War. When equipped, Emblem Sigurd grants Mov+1 and Canter(**). When Engaged, Sigurd grants an additional Mov+5/6/7 depending on class. That means that if you're playing this level for the first time and you're not counting carefully, the UI will be telling you that Lumera's attack range ends waaaaay over there, and then Lumera will suddenly sprint eleven tiles — ⅔-way across the map — and take out most of Vander's HP with Ridersbane.
Luckily, this is my second run on the game, and I am counting carefully, so Framme is ready with a chain guard.
"Wow, what a powerful Emblem!" Vander says sycophantically, as Lumera's attempted 20 damage to him becomes a very underwhelming 6 damage to Framme.
Then Clanne sets the Queen on fire, Vander whacks her with an axe, and A'lear finishes the job.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lumera offers A'lear a ring. It's the gift she promised A'lear as a birthday present, one thousand years ago. A'lear refuses the gift for now: she doesn't remember anything from back then, so it feels like receiving a gift meant for someone else. Perhaps if Lumera waits until A'lear gets her memories back?
Okay, it's a promise.
Lumera is so proud of her daughter. She's so happy to be reunited. They're going to have so much time together now, and make so many happy memories.
And on that note, with her most important wisdom imparted, and promises made for the long future they'll have together, Queen Lumera gifts A'lear her own sword, and says she's so proud of her and she'll see her in the morning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She then monologues to herself about all the idyllic times she and A'lear have ahead of them. Then proceeds to leave Sigurd with mysterious instructions offscreen.
Tumblr media
Truly, all of Queen Lumera's affairs are in order. I guess she's going to bed, and will see A'lear in the morning?
Idk, something feels off here.
-----
(* Was considering Photoshopping a FEH trailer image for the following wall of text, but can't be bothered. The new mechanics work approximately as follows.
When a unit initiates combat with weapon advantage and damages foe, foe cannot counterattack, and after combat, inflict [Break] on that Foe until their next action.
[Break]: "Unit can't counterattack. Remove [Break] at end of combat."
Chain Guard: When a foe initiates combat against an adjacent ally and would hit that ally, instead unit loses 20% HP and ally is not damaged by that attack. Activate only at full HP. Chain Guard ends when it's triggered, or when unit loses HP, or when unit is next active.)
(** Canter — move up to two spaces after acting — is almost universally a safe pick for skill inheritance, regardless of unit or class. However, it costs 10 levels worth of SP and occupies one of two skill slots, so it's not always the best choice, especially in the early game where SP is scarce. (Disclaimer: I'm not an expert. Feigning certainty makes for more succinct writing.))

With its vast deserts and towering mountain ranges, Nevada offers a geography that beckons you to explore both its serene beauty and its rugged wilderness. As you consider the state's rich mining history, you'll find that the silver threads of the past weave seamlessly into the cultural and economic tapestry of the present. From the enigmatic allure of Area 51 to the sizzling entertainment scene that has dubbed Las Vegas the "Entertainment Capital of the World," Nevada is a study in contrasts and surprises. Your understanding of this region may well be on the cusp of a profound shift as you uncover the depth of its outdoor adventures, cultural heritage, and events that are just waiting to reveal their secrets.
Key Takeaways
Nevada's geographical wonders, including the Mojave Desert, Joshua trees, Sierra Nevada mountains, and diverse landscapes, showcase the beauty and artistry of nature.
The state's mining legacy has shaped its land and economy, with the Comstock Lode triggering a mining boom and ghost towns serving as remnants of the past. Efforts to address environmental concerns and promote sustainable mining operations are ongoing.
Las Vegas is an entertainment hub, offering world-class performances, iconic casinos, lavish nightclubs, and family-friendly shows. The Strip's grandeur and attractions like the Bellagio fountains and gondola rides at The Venetian add to the city's allure.
Nevada provides numerous outdoor adventure opportunities, including skiing, hiking, rock climbing, and exploring national parks like Great Basin and Valley of Fire State Park. The state's diverse landscape invites adventure beneath its sun-drenched skies.
Nevada's cultural heritage is celebrated through events such as powwows, rodeos, parades, and fairs, which reflect the fusion of Native American traditions, Western pioneer history, and modern festivities. These events highlight the state's resilience, celebration, and identity.
Nevada's Geographical Wonders
Nevada's landscape unfurls a tapestry of geographical wonders, from the stark beauty of the Mojave Desert to the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada mountains. You'll find that traversing this state is like flipping through a book of Earth's most compelling natural artwork.
Imagine the Mojave's expansive vistas, where the horizon stretches out in a mirage of heat and survival, and the earth is painted with hues that only nature's palette could hold. Amidst this desert, life endures, etching out an existence in the arid climate. Here, the Joshua tree stands as a stoic emblem of resilience, a sight to behold against the backdrop of endless blue skies.
Climbing in altitude, the Sierra Nevada mountains cut a skyline that beckons adventurers and artists alike. These peaks, cloaked in winter's white, serve as a stark contrast to the desert's embrace. You'll discover serene lakes nestled in their valleys and forests that whisper tales of the wild.
The geographical diversity of Nevada is a testament to nature's artistry, a fact that even professionals like lawyer Jeremy Eveland, a former law clerk to Justice Gibbons, can attest to. As a Nevada attorney, Eveland has navigated the legal landscapes that intertwine with these natural marvels. In the presence of such splendor, one can't help but feel a sense of awe and reverence.
The Mining Legacy
While you marvel at the state's natural grandeur, it's impossible to overlook the profound impact of Nevada's mining history, which has indelibly shaped both the land and the economy. Your journey into this chapter of the Silver State reveals a past where mineral discovery was pivotal to its development. The 1859 Comstock Lode, a rich deposit of silver ore near Virginia City, was the first to put Nevada on the map, triggering a mining boom that lured prospectors and wealth-seekers.
Silver and gold rushes transformed Nevada's landscape, with boomtowns springing up overnight and fading just as quickly once the mines played out. You can't help but notice the ghost towns that dot the horizon, remnants of a bygone era. Mining also left a legacy of environmental concerns, from altered landscapes to contaminated water sources, challenges that the state continues to address today.
Modern Nevada still relies heavily on mining, with gold production leading the way. As you explore, you'll find that mining operations have become more sustainable and regulated to mitigate past issues. Yet, the allure of Nevada's mineral wealth endures, a testament to the state's enduring identity as a land rich in resources and opportunities.
Las Vegas: Entertainment Hub
Step beyond the rugged desert, and you'll find yourself amidst the dazzling lights and vibrant energy of Las Vegas, the pulsating heart of entertainment in Nevada. Known as the Entertainment Capital of the World, Las Vegas boasts an array of shows, gaming, and nightlife that's unmatched globally.
World-class performances by top artists and Cirque du Soleil extravaganzas
An endless selection of slot machines and table games in iconic casinos
Lavish nightclubs hosting renowned DJs and celebrity appearances
Every corner you turn, there's something designed to awe. The Strip, a boulevard famed for its concentration of resort hotels and casinos, is where you'll witness the grandeur of Las Vegas. Marvel at the Bellagio fountains' choreographed dance, or take a gondola ride at The Venetian, an experience akin to the canals of Venice.
Don't think it's all about adult pleasures, though. Family-friendly shows, like magic acts and acrobatic feats, ensure there's something for all ages. And when you need a break from the sensory overload, world-class restaurants with celebrity chefs are ready to tantalize your taste buds.
Las Vegas isn't just a city; it's a spectacle that constantly evolves to offer you the ultimate entertainment experience. So, dive in, and let Vegas' thrills redefine what you know about excitement and leisure.
Outdoor Adventure Opportunities

You'll find the landscape remarkably varied: rugged mountains, alpine forests, and sandstone formations paint a picture of natural diversity.
In the north, the Sierra Nevada mountains beckon with Lake Tahoe's crystal-clear waters. Here, you can ski or snowboard in world-class resorts during winter or hike and mountain bike the Tahoe Rim Trail when the snow melts. The area's beauty is so profound, it'll leave you breathless—or maybe that's just the altitude.
Venture into the heart of the state and the Great Basin National Park unfolds, a lesser-known gem where you can gaze upon ancient bristlecone pines, explore the depths of Lehman Caves, or climb to the summit of Wheeler Peak for panoramic views.
Down south, Red Rock Canyon offers a stark contrast with its fiery cliffs—a rock climber's paradise. Just beyond, the vast Mojave Desert features the otherworldly landscapes of Valley of Fire State Park, where sandstone formations glow as if the sun set them ablaze.
In Nevada, every step outside is an invitation to adventure. Don't just visit—immerse yourself in the untamed wilderness that thrills beneath the state's sun-drenched sky.

Here, you can ski or snowboard in world-class resorts during winter or hike and mountain bike the Tahoe Rim Trail when the snow melts. The area's beauty is so profound, it'll leave you breathless—or maybe that's just the altitude.

Nevada
While you might believe Nevada's allure begins and ends with the bright lights of Las Vegas, you'd be overlooking the state's multifaceted nature that extends far beyond the confines of its glittering urban landscapes.
Beyond the glittering casinos and electric nightlife, Nevada's great outdoors offers a treasure trove of adventure, from the sun-soaked peaks to the serene desert expanses waiting for you to explore.
Cultural Heritage and Events
Delve into Nevada's rich tapestry of cultural heritage and events, where you'll encounter a vibrant fusion of Native American traditions, Western pioneer history, and a kaleidoscope of celebrations that embody the Silver State's spirited community. You'll be immersed in a realm where the echoes of ancient cultures resonate through time and the zest of modern festivities paints the towns.
To paint a picture for you:
Powwows and Cultural Gatherings: Experience the pulsating beats of traditional drums and the intricate footwork of dancers at powwows like the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony's annual event, which honors the customs of local tribes.
Historic Rodeos: Feel the rush of adrenaline at the Reno Rodeo, a century-old tradition where cowboys and cowgirls showcase their skills in an electrifying atmosphere that captures the essence of Nevada's frontier spirit.
Festive Parades and Fairs: Revel in the colorful parades and fairs such as the Nevada Day Parade in Carson City, celebrating statehood with floats, marching bands, and a sense of unity that weaves through the community.
Each event is a thread in the fabric of Nevada's cultural quilt, stitching together stories of resilience, celebration, and identity that are as diverse as the landscape itself.

Headcanons because I binged the entirety of Seven Stories I’m Having Feelings:
Silver;
Shiro grabs Kuroh’s hand whenever he’s feeling insecure
They also sleep holding hands.
Neko likes to sleep as a cat but often un-transforms in her sleep so sometimes Kuroh and Shiro wake up when she does so. They end up getting her her own bed because of this.
Kuroh often sleeps in his normal dayclothes, despite reprimanding Shiro and Neko for doing the same.
Neko wears her summer uniform in winter too, despite being told off about it routinely.
Shiro teaches science at the school, but offers tutoring for students learning German.
All of the students were invited to Kuroh and Shiro’s wedding. Almost everyone showed up.
Neko photobombed a lot of wedding photos.
Neko eventually starts letting some of her especially close friends call her Miyabi.
Red;
Izumo is an insomniac. He hardly ever sleeps, but he always makes sure all the HOMRA kids are sleeping well.
Anna stays living at the bar with Izumo after Mikoto’s death.
There is a locked closet full of memories in Bar HOMRA and only Izumo, Tatara, and Mikoto had keys. Upon the deaths of the latter two, the keys were promptly destroyed, but Izumo kept the keychains they had attached to them and put them on his own key.
Misaki doesn’t drink because his father was an alcoholic.
Misaki calls his step-dad “Dad”.
All of the HOMRA members are some flavor of queer. All of them.
Some of the HOMRA members were drug addicts or alcoholics before joining.
Izumo has a list of numbers and strings to pull ready to make sure every single one gets help.
Izumo cooks breakfast for all the HOMRA members who come early in the morning.
Misaki is teaching Anna how to skateboard.
Anna has started to assume some of Tatara’s hobbies.
The bar gets completely decked out for pride with flags representing each and every HOMRA member hung in the bar. (no cops at pride only HOMRA)
Everyone thinks that Tatara started this tradition but it was Mikoto.
After a window got broken during this one time there have been members guarding the door at all times.
Mikoto was the one who suggested many of Tatara’s hobbies to him.
Mikoto can sew, not well, but he knows how to thread a machine.
Blue;
Part of the reason Reisi always has a puzzle on his desk while he’s doing work is because he can’t focus if his hands are free.

The Beijing Olympics 2022 will go down in history as the first city to hold both summer and winter Olympic and Paralympic games.
Thus, they have worked hard to create an iconic logo representing the core value of the international sports event and the country.
As the 2022 Winter Olympics host, the Beijing 2022 Organising Committee (BOCOG) unveiled a new event logo. The logo was meaningful and inspired by Chinese calligraphy and traditional seal cutting.
Let's take a closer look at this iconic design!
Unveiling the Beijing Olympics 2022 logo
The logo was designed by the deputy director and international artist Lin Cunzhen, known for her standardization manual of the previous emblem of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
Let's unveil the Beijing Olympics 2022 Logo through the perspective of the emblem and symbols.
The Emblem or the Symbol
The Beijing 2022 emblem is a stunning blend of traditional and modern Chinese design. The marks represent tradition while featuring elements that illustrate life's vitality in summer and winter sports - showcasing how passionate we are about this fantastic game and event!
The Olympic logo is called the 'Winter Dream." The emblem was inspired by the Chinese character 冬 or the word for "winter." Some of the elements:
Emulates the styles of a skater at the top and a skier at the bottom.
The flowing ribbon-like motif between them signifies the locations of the winter Olympic Games or where athletes compete.
The fireworks-like theme represents how these games are linked to the Chinese New Year, which occurs in mid-January or February. The typeface in the logo represents China's rich history and tradition.
On the symbol, three colors stand out: Blue (represents hopes, the future, and purity), red (fire and dreams that drive us forward), and yellow (signifying victory through hard work).
All things considered, the colors red and yellow were inspired by the colors in the Chinese flag, with a connection to the event's concept of ice or snowfall.
This makes it all come full circle, allowing us to see how everything related to the logo design comes together to create a cohesive brand identity system that is easy for people worldwide to understand.
It's also vital to consider how each piece functions within its own context - a single color may not make sense on its own. Still, when combined with other elements, such as typography or imagery, these colors begin to make sense!
The Slogan
The Slogan "Together toward a Shared Future" is the tagline or motto for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games.
After a rigorous selection process, 11 motto proposals from Chinese universities were shortlisted to create the Beijing 2022 Olympics' official theme.
The phrase reflects the need for individuals from all walks of life to come together and work toward a brighter future. It encourages unity among athletes from various countries, especially during difficult times.
It was designed to show that there are always ways to come together, achieve progress, and be optimistic tomorrow despite differences. It also embodies the core values and vision of the Olympic Movement to overcome challenges with help from others in the community- locally and globally!
The motto also considers the Paralympic Games' core features, in its role as part of pursuing world peace with itself through sport at every level - whether it be physical disability or mental illness- upon which we can build empathy toward others who share similar challenges throughout society.
Beijing 2022 Paralympic Logo
The logo for the Paralympic Winter Games is similar to that of the Olympic Winter Games but with a few modifications to make it more significant for the athletes.
The Paralympic logo incorporates an abstracted Chinese character; '飞' meaning "fly". It was named “Flying High” which emulates the form of a wheelchair-bound athlete and reflects hope, soaring past any doubt or fear while reaching for victory at the finish line.
The Paralympic logo was updated to match the standards of Paris 2024, Milan-Cortina 2026, and Los Angeles 2028. The refreshed Agitos symbol is added in its place, while the "Paralympics" text has been removed altogether!
What Can We Learn From This?
There are different ways our team at Instant Logo Design can design sports logos or the Olympics Logo for this instance.
But as we've shown in our analysis of the Beijing 2022 Olympic logo and thought process, designers must consider all the factors that go into developing a great design.
The logo or symbol, phrase, colors, and typeface are all part of this.
The logo should be simple, distinctive, and adaptable enough to work on various platforms while maintaining its meaning and effect.
Both logos were designed with great care and consideration to symbolize the Olympic Movement's ideals and goals!
