ok so. what if the reason kal always speaks so formally is that that was all he was taught by whoever taught him english (cause it’s not his first language) and he had no EFL friends to speak informally with and he couldn’t be bothered to watch tv shows or read books in english so he just didn’t know slang?

As someone who only knows English, I hadn't even considered this but I am in love with this take.

I also love the idea that when Scarlett realises this, she sits Kal, Saedii and Auri down for a powerpoint presentation on all of the slang that she knows (which is expectedly a lot) and thinks they should know. She does a new presentation (that she refers to as a class) every couple of weeks until she thinks the group has got the knowledge to be released into the English speaking world.

That being said, Fin and Scarlett have the opposite problem. Fin grew up on a space station and Scarlett is a Face, so I reckon both know a few secondary languages and will every now and then slip an idiom into conversation that is definitely not an English one, confusing everyone but each other.

Basically, Tyler is the only one of them who can comfortably throw English slang around 100% of the time.

It is one of the great tragedies of the Aurora Cycle official art that they didn’t make Fin’s exo chonkier. Make it really in-your-face and obvious. It’s the first thing a lot of characters notice about him and it’s incredibly impressive that he built it himself??? Like damn king you dropped this 👑 you incredibly awesome gearhead

I could say a lot here about the representation of disability and mobility aids in media, but when he has an adapted chair in the ship just to accommodate his exo, I feel like it should be more obvious. At the very least, it should offer support to his entire body (he says things like “my fingers take a second to articulate” which implies that his suit’s area of effect extends to his extremities.)

of course, we all know I love an AU.

For context:

Saedii and Kal are the Crown Princess and Prince of Syldra

Scarlett and Tyler are the Crown Princess and Prince of Terra

Fin works in the household of the Terran royals. Fin and Scarlett are in love on the DL because of their class differences.

Auri is an apprentice for her father, the Syldran minister for Agriculture. Kal and her are both in love with each other, but both are convinced it is unrequited

"We're going to be late if you don't move, you know?" Tyler says, leaning into her bedroom. Scarlett turns from where she was staring out the window at the butlers readying their carriage and puts a smile on her face.

"Oh, so sorry I'm not moving at lightning speed. It's not like you're my brother and I'm about to lose you to some arranged marriage," she drawls, but follows him out into the hallway anyway, thanking her ladies maids as she went. She tries to ignore the persistent itch of her tiara in her hair as they walk towards the castles entry wing.

"You know, this could be good. This will end the war and neither you nor Saedii will have to inherit the conflicts of your father's," Tyler says and Scarlett rolls her eyes. She had the best head of diplomacy in the state, she could handle ending a war.

"Just admit you've had a crush on Saedii for years and you were overjoyed father chose this route to end the war," she says and he just shrugs his shoulder.

"Maybe," he concedes but doesn't not say any more as they reach the entry way where their parents waited. Corae reached out to Ty and started to nervously fuss over his dress uniform while Jericho pulled his daughter aside to speak to her quietly.

"Are you sure you do not wish for me to come with you to help finalise negotiations?" he says and Scarlett nods.

"Father, if I cannot even negotiate my brother's life, how do you expect me to be queen?" she asks and when he still seems apprehensive, she sighs, "I have this well in hand, all will be well," she says. They are interrupted by one of the butlers clearing his throat.

"Your highness', we must set off," he says and the family nods.

Her mother takes Tyler's hand and leads the charge to send her children off, taking the steps to the drive with anxious speed. Scarlett turns to her father and gestures for him to walk ahead, which he does.

Scarlett walks straight past where their parents are saying goodbye to the carriage, where a butler waits to assist her into the carriage.

Her favourite butler. Fin stood tall and gave her a small smile, his hand out to help her as she approached.

"Finian," she says, nodding to him and taking his offered hand. She smiled a little at the warmth, the spark she felt even through her gloves. He helps her into the carriage and smiles at her, a small twinkle in his eyes.

"Your highness," he says, in that warm timbre that always makes her blush. They do not have a second to say more (how she wishes they could) before Tyler is climbing into the carriage.

"Running from mother's tears?" she asks and he shrugs.

"You know how she is," he says and she nods. The carriage jolts and moves, prompting her to turn away from him, appearing to be trying to catch a last glance at their parents.

Really, she just wanted another glance at Fin. After all, Tyler's marriage weren't her only diplomatic reasons for travelling to Syldra.

Saedii groaned, feeling very much like dropping her forehead into her vanity. She can't say she was the happiest about her upcoming nuptials, but she swears on her late mother's grave and all the crown jewels (including the ones she is wearing), if her new husband expects her to get as trussed up as she was right now all the time, she would kill him in his sleep.

"That bad, huh?" And, of course, here to witness her moment of weakness, was her brother, seated on her bed, boots up on the comforter.

"Yes, that bad, what if he's all awful and I'm about to spend the rest of my life with some chauvinistic tool? I think I'd rather our nations keep fighting," Kal shakes his head.

"Either way, we lose. This is the best way. Besides, we've never been given any reason to assume the prince is anything untoward," he says, finally standing from her bed and coming to stand behind her. "I know you're afraid to end up with a relationship like mother and father's, but I have a good feeling," he assures her. She grumpily puts her elbows on the vanity and her face on her hands.

"What if it goes badly?"

"What if it goes well?" he counters and really, she can't argue with that.

The door behind them opens and both turn to the butler.

"Your highness', it is time."

Saedii nodded at him, turned back to the mirror and adorned her face with her armour for the evening; a charming smile.

"Creepy," Kal says, watching her face shift. When she turns back to him, he just offers an arm to escort her to the ballroom.

The ballroom was buzzing with people by the time Saedii's fate was sealed. Every aristocrat and servant turned their full attentions to the balcony when the horn blew.

"Her royal highness, Crown Princess Scarlett of Terra and his royal highness, Prince Tyler of Terra," the announcement was made and Saedii watched as they walked down the stairs. The crowd parted for the pair as the came to the bottom. Tyler's eyes scanned the room until eventually he found her, where everyone had given a wide berth.

He approached her with a warm, cautious smile on his face and she couldn't help herself, she felt her cheeks warm. He was not nearly as awful as she had thought he would be.

He looked her brother's age, with warm blue eyes like an ocean, dimples and neatly combed blonde hair that looked like it needed someone to run their hands through it.

Shit.

Scarlett lets Prince Kaliis sweep her into a dance and they move to the music easily. It is good they are both skilled dancers, as both pay more attention to their siblings. Tyler has swept Saedii into a dance hold and for all the Princess' reputation, she looks unlikely to bite him.

"They are a nice looking couple, I will give them that," Kaliis says to her and she turns back to him.

"I suppose they are," she says, before catching him looking over her shoulder, and she frowns, recognising a look of longing she knows too well. "Who has caught your attention, prince Kaliis?" she asks and his eyes snap back to hers. He seems to consider, before rotating them so she could look past him.

"Please, just call me Kal... The girl with the white stripe in her hair. Aurora O'Malley. Her father is a minister," Kal explains and Scarlett finds her in the crowd. She's cute, and Scarlett says as much. "I... I have yet to find the courage to ask for her hand in courtship," Kal says and Scarlett considers.

"At least you could marry her," she whispers, but Kal turns his head in recognition of his words. She pauses for a second. "Apologies, I just mean it is legal for you to court and marry her, if she was amenable even though she is a commoner," she explains and she knows Kal is considering her before he finally speaks.

"You know, it was not always that way. It only takes one monarch to change a nation and, from the little I've gathered from seeing you negotiate, your heart is one your nation needs," Kal says as the music ends. Right before he walks away, Kal leans in. "I hope the one you love knows your heart is a gift to treasure, your highness."

Tyler had offered her his arm for a walk through the garden, and Saedii really couldn't help herself, she had said yes. They traipsed slowly past the fountains and off the pathways towards the lake, and she waited as he seemed to be in deep thought.

"May I ask you a question?" Tyler finally prompts and she nods. "Was it your choice to be dressed up like a doll or was it what someone else thought I would like?" he asks. Saedii blinks then smiles.

"Do you like it?" Tyler grins and turns to her, stopping them. Saedii doesn't have to turn to know the ballrooms view of them is blocked by a giant tree.

"Now, don't get me wrong, your highness, you do look very beautiful tonight, but if I'm being honest, I much prefer women who are capable and who look it. If I remember correctly, you were in a knight's tournament last year. You look beautiful tonight, but after that day, I thought about you for months," he says and she smiles, blushing a little as he brushes a lock of her hair behind her ear.

"It was not my idea. I would have gone a lot simpler. Or challenged you to a duel," she says and he laughs before he considers her again, more seriously.

"Your highness, if I may be honest, I think that I will be a good match for you. You see, I've spent years watching my sister be an heir and I've seen how it taxes her. I know the kind of support you should be in need of and I want to give it to you. I want to be the person you give some of the weight to," he confesses to her, stepping closer, so they are chest-to-chest and eye-to-eye. "If you want that too," he whispers.

"Even if that support involves sword fighting with me when sleep evades me?" she asks and he chuckles a little, leaning a little closer.

"Especially then, if that is what you need, your highness," he says and Saedii frowns.

"If we are to be married, you should call me by my name," she says and he considers and smiles.

"Saedii," he says, his accent curling over the vowels.

"Tyler?" she asks and he hums for her to continue, "I would really like if you would kiss me," she whispers and he seems to short circuit, only coming back when she comes closer, wrapping her arms over his shoulders. He smiles at her, his hands rising, one to her waist, the other to cup her jaw and guide her lips to his own.

And if they stayed kissing against that tree for longer than is proper, well that was just good diplomacy.

feel like this will be a very very VERY unpopular opinion but i don't really see the chemistry between scar and fin. like yeah, they're a sexy power couple i guess, but they never really had time in the series to develop their friendship before just falling head over heels in love. and that sucks, because all the other couples got more acquaintance before they got together.

and it's really clear to me how all of the other couples seem to uplift their partner and naturally support their partner's weaknesses. like auri convinces kal to take risks, and he (mostly tries to) keep her from running into dangerous situations without thinking (he's just generally the Most devoted partner one could Ever ask for though. and the times when he goes feral for her asdfkjdfd o h m y g o d).

tyler and saedii have their incredibly horny telepathy thing going on, and they are also just the Definition of a power couple. if you look up "power couple" in the dictionary theres a picture of saedii kissing tyler while also stabbing someone and they're also playing like three incredibly convoluted strategy games at once. maker's breath.

then we have zila and nari, and although they don't get that much screen time (page time?), we can see that after the timeskip zila is much more emotive and nari seems less prone to angry outbursts. and you canNot tell me they didn't work together like that.

idk its just like. in comparison i kinda feel like scar and fin's relationship is kinda meh. and i think the fandom kinda does them a disservice by making their relationship monogamous when im like 95% sure they would both be down for a long-term polyamorous relationship.

the ending kinda just feels like it wanted every single one of the characters to get with someone? or maybe im just aroace and im missing the point *shrug* just me thoughts here

Okay HERE'S my issue with found family multiple POV books: how am I supposed to tell myself "okay I'll go to sleep at the end of this chapter" when I can clearly see that the next chapter is my fave? And then these authors have the AUDACITY to write such an incredible squad that they're ALL my fave????? Who allowed this??
