CineSpace Lighting and Grip (formerly EUE Screen Gems Studios) - KJ Roberts
This will be my final blog post from my lighting and grip internship with CineSpace!!
Not too many updates from my last post- we’re still re-branding everything following the company switchover, so I’ll use this time to reflect on my experience as a whole.
Naturally, I’m a producer, but I found myself not knowing much about film equipment at all. I took on this internship as a challenge and learning opportunity to learn the ropes of one of the most critical elements of the art of filmmaking. Lighting and grip.
Upon my first visit to the studio, I was surprised by the sheer amount of equipment. In a typical day, I regularly work with millions of dollars worth of equipment- that I was initially very hesitant to be around. But now, thanks to the awesome folks at CineSpace, I can confidently say that I know my way entirely in and out of lights, more specifically what looks good, what is the post practical, and how efficient (or over the top) lighting can be on set.
I’ve since been on sets for student films, and even if I’m not in a lighting and grip role, I feel confident to lend a helping hand when needed and I have a good idea of what lights we should use depending on the desired result.
I feel incredibly confident in my ability to handle industry grade equipment, and would happily take a job in this field if presented with the opportunity.
A big shoutout to Keith, Carly, Alex, Melanie, Simon, and Lawson- thank you all for everything you’ve all taught me, and for providing me with the tools to be a more versatile asset to the industry!!

The Window in Parasite (2019)
The film cleverly communicates the idea that "privacy is a luxury" by using windows as visual metaphors. This motif stems from the belief that what one sees through their window reflects their economic status.
In "Parasite," the rich Park family enjoys a view of a well-kept lawn from their windows, a place where they come together. On the flip side, the poor Kim family deals with messy heaps of garbage, crowded buildings, and a busy street. The Kims don't have the privilege of owning a house with a lawn, let alone experiencing the luxury of privacy.
The lack of privacy significantly results in a shortage of respect. The Parks' grand estate is protected by towering gates, symbolizing the family's exclusive domain. Only the Parks and their chosen guests have access to this restricted sanctuary. As a result, the respect given to the Parks doesn't just come from their wealth but also from their inherent right to property.
The Kims live in cramped, shanty-like homes, facing humiliating situations like pest control mist drifting in during leisure and a drunken person urinating in plain view while the family eats. These moments vividly show the difficulties of being poor.
As a whole, the film skillfully captures societal dynamics that resonate not just in South Korea but across diverse cultures. It emphasizes a universal truth: the view through one's window reflects circumstances deeply connected to their economic standing.
