Now that the tournament is wrapped up I'll first say that even with all the bullshit that came along with it, I still feel so privileged to be able to watch the growth of women's sports in real time like this. There was so much Black joy, so much colonized joy, so much queer joy, and I hope nobody loses sight of how radical the wwc and woso are at the roots. The players are succeeding with quite literally every odd stacked against them in some cases, and i desperately hope that with a spotlight shined on some of the inequalities we've seen, it might get better.
Having said that, I hate that Spain won. It's nothing against the players and everything against Vilda; I ache for the players who watched the final knowing that with a win, with the federation backing Vilda, their careers might be over. I'm still kind of in disbelief that after this incredible tournament, this is somehow where we ended up. And I hope that if you're feeling similar to me, that feeling will serve as a reminder that we are not done yet. Growth isn't good enough if it comes at the cost of players' well-being.
I'm upset that this probably means that Vilda will remain Spain's coach. I think it's clear to anyone that follows women's football that they won this tournament in spite of him, not because of him but that's not how the federation will see it. I hope they can leverage it in this way but I'm not sure they'll be able to which sucks. Bitter sweet for the players who won and all bitter for those who stood up against him and took themselves out of contension/weren't selected
i’ve been seeing a lot of hate towards the players (ona and alexia) for returning to the spanish national team. the thing is, we don’t know what’s happening internally. mapi and ona have been friends for awhile, and i don’t think that the decision to go back to the team was an easy one. they’re STILL friends, guys.
a lot of the blame is going towards the players, and not the coaching staff/federation. we don’t know the terms as to why exactly alexia and ona made themselves available.
maybe blame the abusive coach and the federation? just a thought.
England did in fact not win tonight :( congrats on spain thoo!! I'm still so proud of my lionesses and england!!:(( I know how hard they worked just to get to the finals and I've never been this proud all my life. They mean so much to me and i appreciate all their effort 🙌🏻 i believe they will win the next one (2027) in hoping leah , Viv and the others would be there by that time!! Watching tonight's game was nerve wrecking and heartbreaking for us all but after all, I'm really just so proud of england for making it this far and for making it to the finals. They may have not won the world cup but they made history by making it to the finals for the first time ever !! I love youu, my lionessesss :((( 💗💗
