A chunky crochet shawl as a birthday gift for my friend!! I made the orange part during her birthday party, since because I don’t drink I always end up bringing an Activity to things like that hehe. I LOVE how all these colours ended up looking together, with the little bits of purple throughout :D

Pattern: For the purple and orange part I used the ‘eyelet shawl’ by ‘Hooked By Robin’, then switched to the ‘cloister shell shawl’ from ‘Fiber Spider’ for the blue (with a bit of fudging to phase them into each other).

Yarn: all the yarns are ‘James C Brett Marble Chunky’. The purple (MC49) is the final leftovers from this cardigan, and the orange (MC91) is from this mermaid tail from forever ago!! Felt great to finally use it up. I finished it off with the blue (MC32) which I still have a ton of, so expect to see it again!!

Spider-Punk cardigan is done! I stopped and started a lot during the process, but it ended up taking about 2.5 weeks from start to finish.

From the same commission in December as the lobster, the client requested Hobie Brown aka Spider-Punk from Across the Spider-Verse. He has so many details that I spend hours working on, plus a hand painted (by my partner) 3D printed guitar.

I haven't posted here in.....what, years? Anyway. I'm. Very leased with the results of my latest needle felting project. Ive been really into tarantulas recently, as part of trying to work on my arachnophobia, and realized just how well wool would work for making a big lady!!

This is SUPPOSED to be an Aphonopelma chalcodes, or Arizona blond- her legs could be a little lighter in color and maybe her butt could be a bit more plump, but she really turned out FANTASTIC I think. Her fangs were made from sculpy clay, painted and then given a gloss finish, and her eyes are teeny tiny rhinestones.

Her name is Peanut Butter, by the way :)

New ways to strengthen biomimetic spider-silk

Researchers at Karolinska Institutet have found that spiders have a special trick to make their silk strong, by using a natural biocompatible molecular enhancer. By using the same secret the researchers are able to create biomimetic spider-silk fibers in a non-toxic way. The study is published in Advanced Functional Materials. Spider silk is known for being a strong and environmentally friendly material, while biomimetic spider silk-like fibers currently fall short in terms of mechanical performance. One strategy to increase the mechanical strength of biomimetic spider silk-like fibers is by introducing amyloid-forming motifs (fibrillar protein assembles) into spider silk proteins (spidroins). However, it is then important to note that amyloid fibrils are inherently toxic, e.g., silk nanofibrils derived from cocoons, potentially associated with various diseases.
