- Human ignores safety training and captain’s orders and brings a Sillan Throat Ripper on board ship insisting that it ‘just like the dogs back home’. Gets half the crew killed and is both fired and sued with in inch of their life.

- Human crewmate fired after making inappropriate and murderous comments on the Aranzal diplomat’s Spacebook posts of her grandchildren. Due to other humans making similar ‘Kill it with fire’ comments on the shared post the Aranzal council has declared war on planet Earth.

- Humans paler than an igok are no longer allowed on 80% of United Planets territory after string of vicious hate crimes.

- Human crewmate fired for the repeated harassment of carnivorous and omnivorous crewmates. “I got enough of that pure eating shit back home with the Only Raw cultists,” says Orochan mechanic,��“fucker can take that veganism shit and shove it where Sssarak doesn’t see!”

- Human colonists leave a string mass extinctions in their wake are supremely offended by quarantine line and criminal charges. “This is uncalled for,” Human Helen insists, “we had nothing to do with the pox that wiped out the last Fenrans!”

- After gaining the secrets to pigeon rearing, Zinoan diplomat leaves Earth and canciles all trade deals between Earth and their homeworld. Humans are left baffled, news reporters say. “I bet the fuckers are.” Zinoan diplomat says at signing event for their new book, Birding & Bigotry: The Shannof I Went Through On Earth

- After zenics of bragging about his throwing arm, Human Brad is finally shut up after being shown videos of the lesser common sprooner chicks’ throwing prowess. Annoyed crewmates loved seeing the look on his face.

A Forgetting World

Today I mindlessly left my phone in a cupboard somewhere while I went about my business. It was nice to discover it later and see notifications letting me know I was missed, but I think it would have been nicer to be there for the calls.

I think one of the more burning questions that needs an answer when building a world for D&D is ‘How did everything get here?’, and what the question is really asking is ‘How did all these dope magical items end up existing’.

It’s a fair enough question, but the answer is kind of incidental and something smarter people have answered in more eloquent discussions. In short the answer almost demands to be that the people of now exist in a new cycle of a world that’s seen many lives. Ruins of an ancient and more learned people dot the landscape, hidden within are dangers and treasures in equal measure.

That’s a pretty reasonable answer, and I don’t think too many players are upset if you simply make mention of a long dead empire and have that be that.

I know for at least one of the players - and for me too - this simple explanation is not going to be enough. A powerful nation collapsed, an entire people gone, a shared identity wholly forgotten.

Why?

How?

This slow burn curiosity was baked into the very concept of Fenran’s character. A man whose Faustian desire for knowledge saw the loss of his own eyes in a misbegotten ritual to commune with what he believed to be a formless celestial power.

I’m trying to keep these posts short and sweet, so my full answer to ‘Why did the Kandrian Empire collapse?’ will probably be the subject of another post.

To keep it mysterious and digestible for now I imagine the collapse as the result of a rejection of the gods, and an attempt to remove - or at least distance - Lyria from the Great Wheel.

The Kandrians were successful, if you can call it that, and as a result they have sundered their world’s connection to the Weave.

Picture a house where the residents have decided that electricity is just a tool of the corporate overlords to control our lives, then in trying to stick it to the man they’ve gone around punching holes in walls and ripping the wires out. Yeah, take that you fascist pigs!

Or a patient in hospital hooked up to an IV drip system that’s keeping them steady who decides that they’re better off without it all and has yanked free the needles in their arms.

Lyria isn’t dead, even if the Kandrians definitely are.

The world isn’t dead, but it is dying.

It’s forgetting who it was, or what it was.

I do quite believe this one is related to that one ask way back which flew in here “would you want a son or daughter?” and since it wasn’t specified it’s a list, I said “Whatever, as long as it is an healthy octopus.” Let’s hope the leaders won’t be so dodgy about the question and give us actually an answer.

Ghost Varian: Daughter. He already has a son.

Muradin: Son. Or maybe twins. Twin sons. Moira: More sons. In case something happens to Fenran. Falstad: Whatever. It just should be able to ride a gryph.

Tyrande: Daughter. The stronger of the two genders.

Mekkatorque: Well, females are more known for being inventive but males can keep working for longer time… Can he get something inbetween?

Velen: He thinks that one son was enough.

Genn: Technically speaking, he wants a son. He wants Liam back.

Aysa: As long as it doesn’t end up as reckless Ji, it can be whatever gender it wants.

Thrall: All of them. Not in one kid. He wants more kids. HE loves having kids. Aggra is going to murder him probably.

Spirit of Vol'jin: Girl. Girls are deadlier because people underestimate them.

Ghost Garrosh: He already has 37 adoptive kids. Some of them are girls, some of them are boys, some of them are both, some of them are neither and one of them is a tiger. Give him a break!

Baine: Either. But to be honest, a father would be better.

Sylvanas: Nothing, the last list was enough, thank you all pretty much.

Lor'themar: Girl. Well, even if it’s a boy, he is going to look like a girl, so…

Gallywix: Girl. They are usually more hard working. And better at trade strategy. Usually. HE wants his trade empire to have a goot potencial future leader. And also someone who’d take care of him when he’s old.

Ji: Boy. Like him. So he can iderstand his child and be a better father to him.

Taedal: As long as it is comfortable with whatever it is born as and won't make Taedal to teach them advanced shapeshifting... Then it can be whatever it is gonna be.

The Crew.

I have more coffee, and for today I have nothing but time to burn.

I guess before anything else is said it makes sense to introduce the heroes.

This is their story after all.

As I mentioned in my first post I had each of them come up with a place in the world. I can say now that I like this approach, the world - Lyria - felt a little bit more tangible and real before we even started playing.

I’ll try to express it through their snapshot bios, and maybe another time I’ll sit down to colour each region a little bit more.

So. For now, and for a while, our fair heroes are:

Aratir Thagall - Half-Orc Barbarian

It’s tough being a mongrel. The humans call you half-breed, and so do the orcs. Not quite a man without a country, but definitely a man without a people.

Aratir hails from the West Marches, a collection of squabbling humanocentric kingdoms. Like many of the current generation of non-humans coming of age saw a realisation that the grass is greener on the other side, and this was all the reason he needed to get out.

Chance - Tiefling Sorceror

The Sahar Noran desert is a harsh mistress, and so is Beshaba. Kh’arya, a secluded hamlet hidden far enough from prying eyes; a place of worship for the goddess of misfortune.

Born with the antlers and tail of a deer, Chance belongs to The Scions who are devout followers of Beshaba. Chance runs against the norm; where Beshaba demands mischief and Tymora nurtures good fortune, Chance is the coin that landed on its side.

Fenran - Human Warlock

The long dead Kandrian Empire sought to preserve its knowledge, across the continent several Great Libraries were constructed. Towering fortresses ensconced the precious texts within.

Fenran was born in one such fortress library, deep in the Venglades, and his appetite for knowledge was monstrous. A short stint in the outside world to study a tower that was apparently growing and young Fenran has been swept up by the thrill of adventure.

Lyssa Buckhew - Human Monk

The Northern Borders are a wild, and untamed place. At least they are now. Flip a coin to see how you’ll die; heads is Owlbear, tails is bandit attack. Just kidding, throw the coin in the river, it was an Ankheg.

Well, for Lyssa at least the coin turned up tails. Traveling dwarves returning to a nearby clan-hold at the very least stopped the massacre before everyone died. Lyssa’s new guardians taught strength and pride, but did not mince words. She would describe herself as gentle and caring, and sometimes she’d even be able to express it.

Sirrah of Xyrsandoral - Elf Druid

Born on a Blood Moon, the peoples of the Venglades all agree in hushed whispers behind closed doors that this is an ill omen.

“Only Hags are born on a Blood Moon.”

For 10 years her parents hid this fact, a child of noble blood born on a Blood Moon would be cause for a riot. After 10 years they had nothing but regret for ignoring the whispers, and feared her growing power.

I tried to pare these snapshots down, I didn’t want to get too carried away with any one of them.

Hopefully the characters can be expressed through future snippets and writings, and I know I’ll be writing more about the regions at some point.

On another note, part of me wonders idly about formatting and how readable this all is.

The rest of me wonders how many people other than myself will ever really read all this anyway.

Suddenly: Five years old

For a lovable anon. Let me assume you still remember the time when someone cast the Lordlady Spell and swapped everyone’s gender. Whoever was responsible, this time they cast Spell Of Youth and turned them all into five years old children. Physically and mentally.

Anduin: The young King wandered off and got lost to the royal guard. He was later found sleeping with other kids in the orphanage.

Ghost Varian: He found ghost toy horses and knights and was playing epic battles all day long.

The Council of Three Hammers

Muradin: Was found by Brann, who somehow didn’t get turned into a baby. Not like Muradin needed any assistance, he spent the whole day sleeping. Moira: She tried to be responsible older sister for Fenran. It is quite a feat for a five years old. Falstad: You know the feeling you get when a teeny tiny baby dwarf riding a gigantic gryphon is after you? Well... a lot of Frostmane trolls do know that feeling now.

Tyrande: She was found by the Cameo Sentiel sitting in the Moonwell, crying. Poor little Tyrande found out she is too small to reach the rice cakes at the pedestal.

Mekkatorque: Brann was colleting kids as it seems. He found little cute baby Mekkatorque as he was exploring a reactor from inside.

Velen: All little Draenei spend their childhood falling and getting up. Learning to walk is hard and takes years to master. Years!

Genn: Soft, warm sleeping puppies! Now, which one is King Greymane?

Aysa: She was picking flowers and making flower crowns the whole day. It was unavoidable for little Anduin and the whole orphanage squad to not get one each as well.

Thrall: He found himself a small room and refused to go outside of it, because it was too bright and big and scary. Little Aggra tried to drag him out but with zero success.

Spirit of Vol'jin: What is the difference between 5 years old Troll and 25 years old Troll? Only 20 years. And most people can’t tell anyway. On the other hand, little Vol’jin is way more trickster-minded and likes to set things ablaze.

Ghost Garrosh: Little Garrosh is not trickster-minded at all, in fact on the contrary, but he likes big fires too, so he and Vol’jin formed a disastrous duo. The Spirit Realm still remembers and is very afraid it is going to happen again...

Baine: Hop-scotch competition. No one was able to beat him! Nobody.

Sylvanas: She tried to beat Baine in hop-scotch. You have no idea how adorably angry it made her. It made her only angrier to be called “cute when angry”.

Lor'themar: He sneaked out of Silvermoon to the Eversong woods and lured the Silvermoon guard to play hide’n’seek with him without them knowing it. They couldn’t find him, but to be fair, Silvermoon guard often can’t find their shoes (on the other hand, they always know where the nearest mirror is).

Gallywix: Nobody noticed. Not even Gallywix notied. Some people got their suspicions when he requested apple juice to drink instead of wine, but... Extravagant bosses may have their tastes from time to time...

Ji: Bouncy ball apocalypse in Orgrimmar. Later he tried to calm down Thrall so he would go play with him and Aggra, but he also didn’t success.

Taedal: Do you remember Luxien? Big sister picked up her brother and ran experiments on him. Demon babies are hard to get and with enough fell toffee, Taedal wasn’t even against all of that.

Careful Wishes

Oh man I should give the party a Monkey Paw.

That sounds like it would be a lot of fun.

It’s a shame that half the players in this group seem rather cautious about magical items and things like that.

Recently they discovered a jar full of viscous purple liquid with the eye stalk of a beholder floating inside. The eye would twist and turn to follow your gaze no matter which way you tilted the jar.

It was going to be a simple item that would let the user cast Augury without needing it prepared. Just something fun.

Fenran noped out of it so hard though, and made the party give it away to someone who could safely deal with it.

To be fair they found it deep in the belly of the Keep on the Shadowfell, in the arena for the Kalarel boss fight. I can understand why they might feel a little uneasy about it.
