Fence: Rise spoilers !!!
so how are we feeling about confirmation that 'rivals' is nicholas' word meaning 'more than friends' ??!??
[ID: Four panels from Fence: Rise.
Panel 1: Kyle says, "Well... you know what they used to say about him [meaning Seiji] and Jesse." Nicholas asks, "What?"
Panel 2: Kyle replies, "That they were more than friends." Nicholas says, "Right. They're rivals."
Panel 3: Aiden asks, "Do you really place 'rivals' in a category above 'friends'? A pyramid appears over Nicholas' head. From bottom to top it reads Strangers, Acquaintances, Friends, and in large glittering font, Rivals.]
and he wants to be seiji's rival so bad!!
[ID: A panel from Fence: Rise. Seiji is surrounded by a pink glow as he asks Nicholas, "Should I be jealous that he [meaning Emmett]'s your new rival?"]
this volume basically confirms that every use of the word 'rival' by Nick and to some extent Seiji is romance-coded!!!! i now need to reread all Fence media with this context!!!!!

Every Time Seiji Doesn't Look Like He's About To Murder Someone
One thing Seiji is known for in the Fence comics is his resting bitch face- I took it upon myself to find as many instances as I could where his face is resting, and, maybe even smiling. (I also analyzed the "why" of these images, because I'm obsessed with this comic series).
I will not be including Bobby-Vision, because that would make this list much longer, and I consider it fantasy
This includes spoilers for Fence: volume 5- Rise!!!
VOLUME 1, CHAPTER 1.
This one is simple enough- surprise. No one expects some grubby random guy to walk into your bedroom while you're changing.
VOLUME 2, CHAPTER FIVE.
Another instance of surprise, having lost to another fencer- one who barely even practices, at that. But I would say that there is also a sense of sadness here.
VOLUME 4, CHAPTER 13
Somewhat unsurprisingly, no smiles in volume 3. But, here, is the first instance of relaxation and pleasant surprise that Seiji displays because of Nicholas. Something very relatable about Seiji is being constantly told that things about you are flaws- for Seiji, his determination and focus makes others consider him too intense. This seems to be the first time that someone has told him that it's not a flaw, it's a benefit.
VOLUME 4, CHAPTER 13
Now, yes, ok, I could have put this with the previous set. But something about it feels different. Less like surprise and more like hope, or longing... It's hard to put my finger on.
VOLUME 5, CHAPTER 18
Shock. Pure shock at seeing a fencer who is at his level, someone he never expected to see in his circle again.
VOLUME 5, CHAPTER 19
Potentially one of my favorite panels in the entire comic series. It's... soft. I wouldn't exactly call this expression joy, but something akin to it. Excitement might be the right word- as well as hope. Hope that Nicholas can reach the level he's saying he will, excitement at the possibility.
VOLUME 5, CHAPTER 20
As much as I wish it wasn't true, I must put this panel in as the first time we Seiji actually happy. Because what else could this be, but pure, unfiltered happiness? And holy fuck this makes me want to know what really happened between them.
VOLUME 5, CHAPTER 20
Longing. That's all. Longing and sadness- a miserable urge to be the best, a desperation to be better. A broken heart.
VOLUME 5, CHAPTER 20.
Happiness, part two. God, Seiji is stuck in the WILDEST love triangle. But he's happy here, because he has a friend who cares for him, who wants to improve both for him and with him. He's at peace here.
Anyways, I just finished volume five, and I'm losing my mind. It was amazing! I'm already excited for the next one (PLEASE be coming out soon, PLEASE be coming out soon, PLEASE be coming out soon, ect)
