Keeping busy

My goal is to get 10k words written by the end of September, but at this rate that is going to be a struggle.

I’ll talk more about writing stuff in another post, though, because that’s really sort of a separate entity. For once it’s less about lack of desire and more about lack of actual time. Shit’s been crazy for like two weeks straight now.

Rosie had her vet appointment last Wednesday, and did well. She still has pretty persistent diarrhea, so in addition to the second round of Panacur (which starts Tuesday) they’re trying her out on a pro-biotic, and something else for colitis / intestinal issues. We’re on day two of both, still no improvement, but we’ll keep at it. They thought she looked better, brighter and healthier overall, though, and she gained almost a pound!

The cabinet doors have all arrived (I’m pretty sure, we need to take a complete inventory, but it looks like everything), which means that we can start working on the cabinets at any time. I picked up a palm sander last weekend, which will help enormously in the sanding / priming / painting cycle.

Part of the kitchen “back splash” is covered in this stuff called Z-brick, which was popular in the 1970s. It’s essentially a faux thin-brick panel, except it isn’t in sheets like actual panel. Rather, you have to basically chisel the shit off the wall, and it’s going to take a lot of the underlying sheetrock with it.

To that end we’ve decided to just whitewash the z-brick where it sits, since it’s really not all that awful to look at. The balance of the back splash is just exposed wall, so today I was talking to Marc about doing a custom tile back splash.

I’d like to either buy some hand-painted Italian tiles, or buy fired bisque tiles that we can paint, fire and glaze ourselves at one of the local paint-your-own ceramics places. It would be really nice, especially, to do one of those six-piece mosaics with a kind of custom illustration... maybe cats and berry plants.

We’ve also been hitting the cat room / office / geek room conversion pretty hard. I think I already mentioned that we moved the treadmill into the cat room, and last weekend we emptied a bunch of crap from the studio and Marc framed and built a floating shelf along the whole width of the back wall:

There’s now room enough for the laptop, external monitor, tablet, printer, AND an area to paint, plus plenty of storage underneath. He really did a bang-up job, I spent most of Wednesday working and it was super comfortable and cozy.

In the days since he assembled two new bookshelves, and brought down two more from the attic, filling them with the trades that he’s decided to keep from his initial collection.

We ALSO found a used sleeper loveseat at a yard sale on Saturday for just $25! It was a bit of a struggle to get it upstairs, but now it’s in place in front of the studio / geek room TV, and I’m looking forward to long winter afternoons camped out there with a laptop and some cocoa. Plus! Extra room for guests.

We’ve since moved a fourth bookcase (this one small and low) into place behind the sofa. We’ve got one more to move downstairs, as well, at which point he can start filling the remaining space with books, figurines, whatever he’s decided to keep.

This means there’s now room in the attic to move the Glowforge and the little computer desk. Rather than having it take up a huge, awkward chunk of the studio, I can now just tote the laptop upstairs to do my cutting as needed.

The room has an inset closet that right now is being used as extra art storage. One of my goals this weekend is to really do a deep dive into the materials that I have and sell / trade away stuff that I know I’m not going to use. I have a hoarding problem with certain craft stuff, but realistically I know that a) it’s too much of a PITA to take out and use and b) there are other types of art that are more easily accessible and fun to use. Time to get rid of the excess.

The linocut stuff, for instance. I really enjoyed the hell out of it, but if I’m being honest it’s a fucking hassle from beginning to end. It makes a huge mess, making prints is a mess AND a headache and -- big surprise! -- nobody wants to buy the prints.

The bottom half of the closet will be art storage, and the top half will be more display. Marc has designs on making a kind of diorama display for his He-Man figures, which I think is just brilliant. It would be fun to do a whole painted backdrop for it!

Things are winding down in the garden. We have a couple handfuls of blackberries that are waiting to ripen, and I’m starting to eye up how I’m going to bring in the outdoor plants for the winter. It turns out that the elephant ear is going to have to get dug up and overwintered as a rhizome (!!!!), and I’m going to need to find somewhere to stash the brown turkey fig, as apparently both need to have a kind of winter dormancy to stay healthy. Lugging the latter up to the attic is not an option so, haha... this will be exciting.

We had a visitor in the back yard earlier this week, as well:

Marc was closing things up for bed when he called me downstairs. I saw it on the patio at first and was like, “Oh, is that another kitten!??”

Spolier alert: not a kitten.

I’d noticed a kind of hollow dug under one of our fence panels, and I guess now we know what made it. He was very polite, took a few bites of cat food and then went on about his way. Hopefully he and Fidget give each other a wide berth, as I don’t relish having to give a tomato juice bath to a half-feral cat.

Rosie was VERY excited, however, and I think a little put out that we didn’t let her play with / consume it.

My worries about giving her Panacur were unfounded, by the way. We mixed it into some baby food, added in a little juice from a can of chunked chicken, and she inhaled it. We’ve since had to give her some apparently nasty-tasting pills, and as long as it is located somewhere in her bowl she doesn’t even pause for breath. It’s gone in seconds.

She continues to be amazing and wonderful.

Oscar Nominated Shorts 2017: Blind Vaysha

Every year, you can use the term “obligatory” for a film or two in the Oscars, regardless of category. In the animated shorts, it’s the “obligatory foreign film” since the US tends to dominate that category.

That’s Blind Vaysha. And normally, I would argue that such a label is harmful, and in past years I think pretty inaccurate, but this year I’m afraid I can’t make that argument. If you watch these films via a showing of ShortsHD’s yearly collection, you’ll come across a couple other foreign films that I think were a lot more suited to the Oscar race in a “foreign film” capacity, but this one said something that really appeals to a lot of the country right now.

In the final moments of the film, the narrator discusses the merits and downfalls of living solely in the future or solely in the past and, given the current political climate, pretty explicitly warns against folks doing either one of those, living with their sight on one part of life. And the warning is fair, but I really think that it’s the only reason Blind Vaysha was nominated at all. It’s no secret Hollywood has been getting very heavy handed in the political game these days, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but something about this film smelled of a tacked on Aesop-as-politico chaser that the Academy just really wanted to push through.

I’m not saying animated films, shorts or feature length, shouldn’t say something, political or otherwise. I’m an apologist of animation being just as legitimate a form of cinema as live-action. We haven’t yet reached a time when animation is as universally accepted as live-action. It’s obvious that we’re getting close, though. There are more and more animators our age, getting close to or already raising children, encouraging that universal acceptance, and the demographic that considers anything animated to be a “kid-movie” is slowly moving out. Unfortunately, that demographic, for the most part, still runs the Academy.

There’s an interesting phenomenon whereby a person can claim progression, cite their specific demonstrative actions, and still live and think generally at a lower level of progression than the average person, who doesn’t make a similar claim, lives and thinks. That sounds complicated, but basically it boils down to someone claiming something like “I’m a feminist because...” or “I don’t see color because...” and prove it well, with a political stance, a protest, supporting business that align with that sentiment, etc. They’re able to say, “Public! Look at how progressive I am! See how I prove what I say with this grand obvious gesture!” But then when questioned about seemingly innocuous scenarios in the same issue, you find they still have some deep seated opinions to the contrary. That’s not to say that all people are awful liars, malevolent and rotten without a single good egg in the bunch. That is to say that it’s entirely common, and very likely, that the Academy including this piece in this year’s ceremony, political and avant garde, elitist and experimental, is a gesture to say, “We’re letting animation be something deep and meaningful and say important things!” but they’ve backed a horse they know can fail. Ultimately, their nomination will result in nothing. Nothing! In fact, it might even do some harm, because it’ll allow them to ignore other qualified pieces with real messages, saying, “Hey, we gave that one a chance, and it didn’t make it. That’s not our fault. We’re progressive.” This is, admittedly, an exceptionally bleak view of the world, due in no small part to my undoubtedly confusing explanation, but it’s nevertheless accurate. Until the new generation of young guns takes the leadership role in the Academy, we aren’t likely at all to see much change at all. That makes me sad, but also really, really excited for the future of animation at the Academy Awards. If you follow this site at all, you know just how vast the pool of stellar animated work is becoming. There’s a Renaissance coming. Mark my words, there will be a day where we start regularly seeing animated films showing up in multiple categories, competing and winning against live-action, and potentially even dictating the course of film as much as the advent of sound, color film, more mobile cameras, and the digital recording and and distribution medium did.

In the spirit of a digital Renaissance, thuis whole piece was drawn on a Cintiq tablet in a faux linocut style; that is, the creator, Theodore Ushev, never used the undo function, citing the idea that if you make a wrong move in a physical linocut, you’re stuck with that mistake. He also says with this style, you are animating the color more than the character, and he only used about 5 colors to make the whole thing, attempting to make the digital medium mimicked layering paint on wood. If I’m honest, it made a mess. I appreciate the frames and the adherence to a digital representation of a physical, and physically demanding, medium, but there were times when the screen was so full of splotches of color and vast swathes of black, all violently changing and adjusting to find the right image that it was truly distracting. If you’re familiar with the director’s work, it may be more tolerable to you (he previously released a film called Blood Manifest, which he created using...his own blood. So.) but for me, it was a bit too much.

On top of that, there wasn’t any resolution. I don’t need a happy ending, but I would have liked something more than a pointed finger. “Hey you,” it said.”You’re doing your life wrong.” And as I mentioned earlier, it couldn’t have come at a more charged time in the political climate, and I wonder if the director ever really intended for it to be potentially co-opted, likely by both sides, as an admonishment of the other.

The story was adapted from a short story by Georgi Gospodinov, who is evidently as experimental as Ushev, so I can’t fault the director entirely, but as far as a film in the Oscars go, I just don’t see this one going all the way. I’ve read a good number of reviews that think it’s the biggest opponent to Pixar’s Piper, which I’ll review later, but I rate this one eye (brown or green, you pick) out of five.

Addendum: Evidently this film was originally 3D, which may be a first for an animated short nominee, I don’t know, but I do know that had I seen it in 3D, I would have thrown up. I’m pretty prone to motion sickness at the best of times, but this was another level of motion entirely.

Tackle Twill VS. Sublimation Printing: Which Method Is Better?

For as long as can be remembered, people have sought out ways of decorating their clothing and household items to add color and interest. Hand-painted scenes on silk scarves or a delicately embroidered floral motif on the bodice of a dress have always been popular. Since the mid century there has been a rise in the popularity of personalizing items with a name or favorite saying, even photos of one’s self or loved ones. As technology and design have progressed over the years, so have the methods by which this could be accomplished.

There are so many effective and successful ways of applying a design to another object. Some of the more popular methods include screen printing, woodblock, linocut, batik, heat transfers, tackle twill and sublimation printing. It is the last two that will be discussed here, as they are the most effective and long lasting of the lot. The first thing you will need to know is what these methods are and what they are used for, so let’s take a good look.

What You Should Know About Tackle Twill

Tackle twill is a clean and classic method of application that was developed by R. J. Liebe in 1923. Americans grew up seeing that method in their everyday lives without even realizing it. Sports jerseys, team jackets and baseball caps were all embellished using tackle twill. So, what is it? When tackle twill was first invented, it was the standard for high-quality, long-lasting appliqués; in fact, most very old pieces done in this way are still in good condition as far as the appliqué goes.

So, how is tackle twill done? The first step is to cut out the shapes you need, be they letters, swooshes or other designs. Typically the older work was done by cutting two layers of felt, one smaller than the other, creating some dimension and contrast. Let’s use a vintage red letterman jacket, for instance, to explain how this worked. Heavy white felt letters were cut out first, laid carefully in place and then stitched around the edges by hand to the jacket. When this step was completed, it was followed by cutting out the same design in a slightly smaller, narrower version in black felt. The black layer was placed on the white layer and centered, leaving a very narrow border of the white showing around the edges. Then the black layer was hand-stitched in place right through the white layer to the jacket. This created a multidimensional, crisp and attractive appliquéd design.

The same process was done with football jerseys, only the fabric used to form the letters and designs was called twill – a tough and finely woven polyester fabric with a diagonal weft that cuts well without fraying, resists shrinkage, is flexible and stands up to the stitching process. This is where the process got its name. Heat sealing the twill to the base layer (clothing article) can further stabilize the piece against shifting during stitching, as well as adding a bit of stiffness that makes the stitching process go more smoothly. Stitching is done by using the same color thread as the piece you are sewing the edge of and using an overcast stitch (where you stitch back and forth from the base layer to the twill layer in what is essentially a very close-together zigzag or satin stitch) attaching the twill with a very smooth and even row of stitching. This edge stitching can be done in the same color as the twill so as to be nearly unnoticed, or it can also be done in contrasting colors as an integral part of the design, adding interest and texture. Either way, it does add a slightly raised edge and gives a nice, finished feel.

Stacking the fabrics is not really limited to just a couple of layers, but layers can be added to create the desired design. For instance, you might start with a blue jersey, then do a first layer in white for contrast and outline. Next you could add the lettering in a black fabric, and then an orange basketball could be stitched on, overlapping the first two, and so on. In a reverse tackle-twill method, the center of the letter is sewn down first and then the outline is laid around it and both edges are stitched. While not as common as the stacking method, it produces an attractive and crisp-looking design as well. With either method, special treatments, called coatings, can be applied to the surface of the appliqué to add interest with a shiny, glittery or even a rubbery feel.

Over time, a variety of materials have been used with this method; vinyl, glitter fabrics, lamé, even faux fur – there is really no limit, other than making sure the material being applied is compatible with the base layer and can be laundered in the same way. Just as in the old days, you can find many items that have been decorated with the tackle-twill method. Hats, t-shirts, jeans, jackets, sport jerseys, company shirts, tote bags, shoes and even decorative items such as throw pillows or blankets are created using this process. It is durable and appealing for many uses.

What You Should Know About Sublimation Printing

Now let’s talk about sublimation printing. Sublimation has been around since the 1950s and has continued to be improved upon over the years. It is an advanced and scientific process that allows printed designs to become permanent. You have probably owned or at least seen an article of clothing that has a colorful design on the surface, while the back has been left white. This is in contrast to the more common yarn-dyed prints that, though the back may be more muted, are printed on both sides of the fabric.

Technicians are very careful to thoroughly smooth an area before applying the dye so as to produce a quality end product. There was a clever exception to this careful approach in the 2010s, when bohemian-style sublimation printed clothing was very popular (likely, it was a mistake some clever people capitalized on). Skirts, blouses or t-shirts were laid flat in preparation to be printed, but the wrinkles were not smoothed out prior to the process. This produced colorfully patterned clothing that had wrinkles at a variety of points that were left white and unprinted, as the fabric had been folded over during printing. No two were identical, and these articles became a part of a fashion statement rather than a costly manufacturing waste product.

So how does this process work? We will use a t-shirt for this example. In the first step, an artist creates a full-color design, which is then printed out with special liquid-gel ink on high-release transfer paper. The t-shirt (must be polyester or another synthetic blend) to receive decoration is placed very carefully on a thermal press. White newsprint or some such inexpensive paper is then placed below the t-shirt as well as inside it to prevent transference through to the back of the garment. The t-shirt is carefully straightened and smoothed, then the paper with the print to be applied is placed face down on the garment and carefully centered at the appropriate position. Another piece of newsprint is placed on top. The layers of paper below and on top are for the purpose of keeping the thermal press clean during the process.

This is where the magic happens. The press closes tightly, applying pressure on the t-shirt and the print. The press is also hot – between 350 and 420 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on the dye used. The heat and pressure cause the solid gel ink to turn quickly into a gas in what is called an endothermic reaction. The press is left closed for about 50 seconds. The gel ink, now converted to a gas form, bonds to the surface of the fabric at the molecular level, giving the fabric a more vibrant and permanent image than traditional heat transfers or screen printing, for instance, which may crack or peel over time.

This process can be applied to virtually any semi-porous or hard surface that will bond to the inks such as the synthetic fabrics mentioned above, magnets, plastic, plexiglass, and even ceramic mugs or tiles. The latter require a specially shaped heat press and yield fabulous results. Colors tend to intensify in this process, so if muted tones are desired, they should be slightly more muted in the design. Designs are permanent – clothing can be washed and dried over and over, and ceramics are dishwasher-friendly.

Our Take

So, as you can see, these two methods of decorating various items are both effective, and it is difficult to say which of these two processes – sublimation printing or tackle twill – is better. They both yield amazing and creative results. They are both long lasting and as attractive as a designer’s imagination can make them. The difference comes in the resulting look and feel that you want your item to have: a more hand-wrought and vintage look from the tackle twill, or a modern, vibrant look with more realism from the sublimation printing. Each method holds its own unique advantages.
