#fauna of dathomir

The herbalist had told me of wisp creatures which lurked in the low lands here. Of course, upon finding one I proceeded to ignore his warnings to stay away from them.
The creature is fully sentient, like a tooka or better. I can sense it in the force. Its surface even feels like fur, if fur could be made of smoke and fire. A bit too warm to be comfortable, but worth a minor burn for the sensation.
It tried to eat me. I found this quite charming, and caught it a flying insect the size of my head to eat instead.

I’m just gonna be imagining Nightbrothers retreating to the swamp forests of Dathomir at certain times of year.
Houses built on the shallows or even just above the waters.
The flora and fauna teeming with life, as the rest of Dathomir could be lethal and beautiful in its own way.
Paddled boats taken out to the marsh and at dawn to ensure a meal. Often some caught fish or traps picked up from the day before.
Each boat equipped with the weapon to keep the alligator like creatures from snapping their jaws.
At night their eyes glowed just above water as strange insects fluttered about like flames.
The Marshes were full of life of all kinds…

An altar to the Fanged God still in use after six hundred cycles suggested the presence of a haruspex among the last Nightbrother clans.
Thought the practice of divination using the entrails of Dathomir's native fauna were prohibited by the Nightsisters, evidence of animal sacrifice suggests haruspicy was still practiced in secret.
Near the altar, archaeologists uncovered a fragmented tablet containing a prophecy read from a rancor liver: that a zabrak would rise as a warrior to lead the Nightbrothers to freedom and triumph over their oppressors:
He would lose everything to the Dark Side in the process, but the Fanged God would judge him worthy for his sacrifices, and return him to glory.
There has been no record of a zabrak warrior's return to date.

The Path Ahead || Merrin & Cal
Starter for @tapalslegacy
Tanalorr reminds her more of her homeworld than any of the people who fought to reach it would have liked it to.
It has none of Dathomir's violent fauna, nor is it shined upon by a scorching, nearing abrasive, red sun. But what was once there is now in ruins. What was once meant to hold hope and expectations for the future has been reduced to abandoned shambles due to the cruelty and greed of people who didn't understand nor care about what this place was meant to represent. Just like what was once the Nightsisters' territory back on Dathomir.
But here, hope remained. Tanalorr remained the best option for those who wanted to get away from the empire, force sensitive or not. It would take time and effort, but it would become a safe place in a otherwise unsafe galaxy.
They could make it work.
Losing Cere and Cordova, and Bode's betrayal didn't make this whole situation any easier. It only added a fresh layer of stress and urgency to it all– more weight to be shouldered. Something told Merrin that Cal would be trying to shoulder all of it.
That doesn't mean she'll let him.
With another dawn rising over Koboh's horizon comes a new day. Merrin hands call one of the cups of caf that Greez —always the first to awaken— had prepared for them.
"Kata has yet to wake up," she hums, watching Cal carefully. "Did you rest?"

You know what Dathomir really lacks?
A deer
So I created one
Tumblr media
Othori ( eng. the one horned), are a non sentient, deer-like, herbivorous species of dathomirian fauna. Their name comes from the imposing antlers, fusing into one in older males. Both sexes have a set of fangs, as well as spikes sticking out of their jaw and back. They are well camouflaged in the dathomirian wilderness, thanks to their dark red coat with black stripes. Their hooves have three fingers and claw-like structures, making them worse at flight than fight.
Othori, while mostly solitary, during the mating season join in herds consisting of one or two bulls and up to twenty does. Males and females with calves are aggressive and dangerous, even to experienced hunters. While mostly herbivorous, they will occasionally feed on carcasses and small animals. Bulls do not take part in raising their young. Fawns stay with their mothers until they are two years old, although females are known to share territory with their kin.
In dathomirian culture, Othori are a symbol of strength and grace. Nightbrothers wear their bones and fur as proof of strength. Organs of the animal are used in medicine and rituals by the Nightsisters. A white Othori is a sign of survival and hope as well as a promise of better times coming.
There were attempts of domesticating the Othori, all unsuccessful because of their aggressive nature and unfitness to be saddled or used in transport of goods.

Meet my OC, Harsh Nalza! He is a Nightbrother and a Force-adept, born shortly before the rise of the Empire. Not pictured here, he has a rancor amulet infused with Dathomiri magik, which he wears as a necklace.
Notable Force abilities: Animal bond, mind control, Force healing
Virtues: Caring, resourceful, resilient, perceptive, devoted
Vices: Anger, obstinance, resentful, temperamental, overprotective
When Harsh turned five years old, his elder brother, Ire, carried him to the shrine of the Winged Goddess in the heart of the Dathomiri jungle. In the tradition of the Nightbrothers, Ire sacrificed a lamb to the Goddess and painted over Harsh’s tattoo’s with the lamb’s blood. In return, the Goddess would offer Harsh protection, health, and strength.
Harsh and Ire returned from the jungle to find their village massacred. Battle droids were scattered among the bodies of their brothers. The Nightbrothers had fought to the last man, to the last child, but General Grievous and the droid army’s devastation was complete.
The brothers attempted to remain on Dathomir, but Dathomir is a hostile planet, and the brothers were too young, weak, and inexperienced to survive on their own. Ire, 12 years old at the time, decided that they’d leave their secluded planet and try to make a life for themselves in the galaxy at large. They were soon captured by criminals and sold into slavery.
They were first owned by the Hutts, but were then sold to work on the Imperial slave world of Despayre, where the first Death Star was constructed. Ire did his best to protect and educate Harsh, teaching him how to read and write, about the Force and how to use it, and about Dathomir – its culture, history, and magik.
On Despayre, Harsh’s connection to the Living Force grew. Despayre is a world of jungles, rivers, and seas, and its flora and fauna are as hostile as the lifeforms on Dathomir – thorned and poisonous, fanged and venomous. Harsh learned how to connect with the planet’s dangerous flora and fauna. It was perhaps this ability to connect with the Living Force that led Harsh to develop Force healing abilities, which he would use on fellow slaves and injured wildlife.
But the brutal conditions of Harsh’s life have made him susceptible to the dark side. He increasingly draws upon it, and has learned how to use it to manipulate and control people’s minds.
When Harsh was 12 years old, Ire was killed by an Imperial slave master. Shortly after, Harsh was sold to an Imperial coaxium mine on Kessel. Ire’s murder has pushed Harsh into an increasingly unstable, angry, and dark state. Months after arriving on Kessel, Harsh lashed out and used the Force to kill two  guards. Some wookies aided his escape, but Harsh is now alone and on the run. The Inquisitors hunt him, and the Emperor has found himself amused by the possibility of having another Nightbrother assassin...

A Case For Singing Mountain Clan in Canon
The Singing Mountain is now part of canon. More than locations are needed. The Singing Mountain Clan needs to be brought back too. As Jedi are to Sith, Singing Mountain Clan is to the Nightsisters. They’re their Light Side equivalent. It’s interesting to contrast and compare the two groups. In addition, it’ll add some depth to Dathomir.
In all honesty, the Clone Wars and the Star Wars Fallen Order didn’t do Dathomir any favors. Though the scenery is creepy and foreboding, it’s also desolated. The planet would barely be able to sustain the Nightsisters and couldn’t sustain the large fauna (no way a rancor, bane back spider or nydak could survive there). They really didn’t think about the food chain at all. This is a fantasy series, so one hundred percent science accuracy isn’t necessary. Yet, the foreboding landscape of Dathomir is actually boringly common. Malachor and Mustafar are very similar in appearance to Dathomir. If you think there are so many scarcely planets in the Star Wars, it’s getting boring. If it weren’t for the Nightsister, people would barely remember the planet.
Now, I’m not saying get rid of new canon. Let’s add to it and be respectful to legends. Let’s add some meat to the Nightsisters. Why is the planet so hostile and desolate? Because of the Nightsisters’ presences, their use of Dark Side of the Living Force directly affects the surroundings. These creatures that you see playing Fallen Order are twisted monstrosities because the Dark Side corrupts. There are so few plants around because the Dark Side destroys.
Here's where the contrast comes in. The native Dathomir uncorrupt by the Dark Side is lush thick forests as seen by the Singing Mountain. This is where you met rancors and various creatures from the old Star Wars Galaxies game (which is closer to the original books). So, you have more balanced ecosystem with insects, fish, worms, cattle, birds and other creatures. Also, you have more variations of flora and clothing. While the Nightsisters wear the same red uniform, the Singing Mountain Clan villagers wear various styles and colors.
This highlights the difference between the various force groups. Jedi and Sith usually emphasis their different with their buildings. Jedi Temple is light and regal, while the Vader palace is dark and scarce. Their clothing is interesting rather plain with Jedi robes and Sith black leather with little variations. It makes sense, since both groups live like monks. However, Nightsisters and the Singing Mountain Clans have families. While the Nightsisters segregates their males, the Singing Mountain Clans males and females live together.
The Singing Mountain Clan would be a nice addition especially for the Mandalorian. If they’re not having Luke, Ezra or Kanan teach Grogu, the Singing Mountain Clan are ideal. They’re Light Side users who are not afraid to love and fight. According to the maps, Dathomir is in or near Mandalorian space. They would be interesting to interact with.
I’m currently playing with them in my fanfiction “Stretch Marks” https://archiveofourown.org/works/40820310
Hopefully, in the future, I can play around with them some more in other fanfictions.

as much as i wanna see galen again, disney would ruin his character in the new game. the last game ( jedi: fallen order ) was set up to be pretty okay & i’ll start with what i enjoyed!
the storyline is what really made it a cool game ; the style of storytelling through force echos and the like was clever and i haven’t seen that level of creativity in a while? they actually did a good job of showing how inevitable and expansive the empire was. the story could have been filled with more diverse characters but the places we go and the alliances we make are pretty cool & heartfelt.
the work with conceptualizing planets and their inhabitants and flora and fauna was amazing. the information & time spent on it was ….wow like by far amazing! esp fortress inquisitorious
trilla and the inquisitors were actually set up to ACTUALLY be the terrifying force they were. inquisitors weren’t prestigious in the sense of job hierarchy, sure you were above everyone due to your force sensitivity but most didn’t want to be there and the training was basically vader torturing you a bit and making u a good combat fighter.
the musical score was nice! really immersed you.
combat & controls were pretty good.
some of the customization , the lightsaber specifically
things i didn’t really care for:
white boy as our main character? like if you went this far at least go a bit further and let us customize our character, sure it would have taken longer but you would’ve made more extra cash bc literally everyone and their mom wants kotor customization but with better graphics ( kotor & swtor is amazing i’m not saying it’s not but you’re telling me you wouldn’t want some better graphics? ‘ it’s apart of its charm!’ mhm ok. )
killing off trilla was….biggest L for me i honestly did not care if they made a sequel once they had vader kill her ( brutal and cruel esp as she was beginning to open up and consider options besides death via inquisitor lifestyle. )
the customization ; ponchos , bd1 skins & mantis ship skins was weak but u know. better than nothing! but still. LACKING.
the god . damn. map. was so confusing and small and maybe i’m just not the brightest bulb but you get lost on sub floor 5 when u need to get back to above ground floor 2 ok. like. damn.
why’d we have to like. tromp thru dathomir’s night brother tribe and like. were forced to kill lots of them. what the fuck was that about.
i would have preferred if we leaned more into EU / LEGENDS force user type deal with these games but that’s just my own personal gripe bc i miss when force users were op
at the end of the day the sequel was announced and i’m sure they did a 5-10 year time skip? or something like that & honestly i don’t really know what else they want us to do? we personally fought and escaped vader , penetrated a fortress & now vader is gonna want us dead 10x more than before lol. i’d like to say galen would be a good addition, but i know they’d just fuck him up so i think it’d be best to just not even add him lol.

hi yes ma'am now that I'm more well educated, I'd like to order the "ultimate blorbo Darth Maul's backstory" with extra hot sauce (details) and a side of "what makes you love Rogue One above all the other movies?" please and thank you 😁
also will b sure to binge all the movies and then read your fanfic after, I really love your character art for your OC btw! she's so so pretty, and that backstory you gave on her in the post makes me want to read more about her story! ily 🩷
RAAAHHHHAGHAHSJDKDK SHAKING CRYING EVEN HARDER THANK YOU YOU’RE SO WONDERFUL ❤️❤️❤️ ILY
Okay here’s the Ultimate Blorbo Darth Maul Backstory Speedrun: basically he was born to a powerful witch on the planet Dathomir where there’s a lot of segregation (yikes) and interesting tribal dynamics; he gets stolen by Darth Sidious aka Palpatine (because Palpatine is weird rivals with Maul’s mom), and is raised/groomed/ abused to be the perfect assassin & Sith Lord apprentice. Then at 22 years old (tragic, should’ve been at the club), during a battle with Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn (who he kills) and Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi, he is cut in half at the waist by Kenobi and thrown down a garbage chute. He SURVIVES THIS on sheer willpower and Sith rage alone, and spends the next 12-ish years descending into complete madness and Kenobi-fueled desire for revenge on a far-removed landfill planet. It’s here he builds himself spider legs out of literal trash and scrap and terrorizes the local fauna. A regular old Shelob (LOTR reference ba um tss). Then he’s rescued by his biological brother, Savage Opress (who’d been tasked with this by their manipulative mom), who brings him back to Dathomir to be “healed” by their witch mother. He’s now got a swanky new pair of robo legs, his insanity is “cured”, and he runs around shirtless for the foreseeable future. This takes place during the Clone Wars so lots of Clone Wars stuff goes on in the meanwhile. Eventually Maul and Savage overtake the planet of Mandalore (where the Mandalorians are from) and Maul becomes the Mand’alore (the king basically. Oh and he’s wearing clothes now womp womp). During this time a lot of stuff happens: they create a crime syndicate, Palpatine tries to cast aside and kill Maul (seeing as he’d replaced him twice by this point), Savage is murdered, and eventually after plot conflicts Maul is chased off Mandalore. Then Order 66 happens and the rise of the Empire and, with the rest of the surviving Force-users, he fades away to avoid detection. Here’s where my knowledge gets slightly hazy because the tail end of his story makes me sad and I Don’t Perceive It + I haven’t watched Rebels in its entirety: Maul joins up with the crime syndicate Crimson Dawn and ends up ruling it from the shadows, does this for another decade-ish, then fades into obscurity some time in his late 40s/ early 50s to dodge the still-rampant anti-Force sentiments in the Empire. He resurfaces again to pester this “post-Jedi Order” Force-sensitive kid, Ezra, and seems to have mellowed out greatly since his time as a ruthless Sith Lord (probably due to LITERALLY NEVER CATCHING A BREAK EVER). He confronts his long-time rival and the man who he sees as having ruined his life, Kenobi (he screams and rants and raves about him a lot, it’s pretty entertaining, if sad) one last time on Tatooine, is bested in battle, and kinda gives up and dies. Which is a mood, but yeah. Kenobi, who has been tolerating this guy’s feral insanity and hatred for him for decades, gives him an honorable Jedi funeral and burns his body, and I cry if I think too much about that! 😁 His story is rife with tragedy and violence and I doubt he’s ever happy except in the company of his brother who he fails to save, and he’s never loved or been shown love in canon and it’s heartbreaking because his entire life is a hurricane of abuse and misery and never getting his way and never being loved except by the one person he cares about but can’t save AGHHHHHHJJH
On to why I love Rogue One before I spontaneously combust: visually, it is PHENOMENAL! The characters (though I can’t name a majority of them) are easy to love and root for, and at its core it’s a story about the everyday little people who make big sacrifices along the way. It follows several people on their mission to retrieve the information that holds the plans to destroy the Death Star, to be delivered to the Rebellion, and each and every one of them dies in the process— yes even the main characters. It is a modern tragedy and you know when you start it there’s only one way it can end, and I hate to admit it makes me cry before the opening scene even begins to play. Not even joking, last time i watched I was sobbing at a black screen. Plus Mads Mikkelsen is in it 🫣 It isn’t necessarily my favorite, but that spot is taken by The Phantom Menace, but I def think it’s the most well-done Star Wars movie
And thank you for the lovely compliments, it means so much that you’d be interested in getting into the fandom for my silly fic. That’s genuinely so special to me 🥺❤️❤️❤️

Aster Oppress, princess of Dathomir and all around gremlin seeing that the darker months are coming.
“Ah yes perfect for sleeping, change my schedule. I will require more time for sleeping”
Cress gives her a look, “ What am I your personal assistant?”
She rolls her eyes, “ You might as well be, less sun means less foraging.”
Cress laughs, “ That’s where you are wrong dear sister of mine,” the zabrak boy pulls out a lantern.
“Come on, a midnight foraging trip would be fun!”
“Only if there is a hunt involved.”
Cress winces, Aster was absolutely feral when it came to hunting. The poor rancors…and all other fauna.
“I take it back you are uninvited.”
Aster scoffs, “ You are much too soft hearted.”
Cress glares at her, “ Buir says I wear my heart on my sleeve.”
“Same thing, now change that schedule. I’m off to go for my afternoon nap. Wake me for dinner.”

Tumblr media
This was one of those moments where the fact that they hadn't grown up together really shown. If they had grown up together, Maul would know better than to believe Quinlan when he says he will behave– if anything, Quinlan is a little surprised that it seems Maul hasn't realized by now, considering how Quinlan finds trouble everywhere he goes and, when he doesn't find them, he creates his own to make up for the lack of trouble. This time around, it wasn't as bad as other times. Sure, he'd stumbled back into their currently shared ship covered in mud and limping, but there was no blood and he made it all the way in, having removed his boots by the entrance to not track mud inside, and to a seat before collapsing with a groan, all while remaining conscious. That last part was the true achievement, because he was exhausted.
"I wanted to take a look around, I haven't been here in years," he retorted. "I've confirmed I am not made to deal with the Dathomir fauna."
Quinlan hadn't been on Dathomir since... he couldn't even pinpoint the exact date of his last visit, but it had been BEFORE the Nightsisters were massacred by separatist forces. That much he knew because, back then, they were still around to try to kill him. That'd been the last time, not the first but the longest and most eventful one, and even then, he had not had any encounters with Dathomirian fauna until now.
He thought rancors were bad, Nydaks were far worse. Smaller, but so much faster. The damn thing had dragged him through the muddy ground like a massif drags its chew toy around.
"I think I gave some Nightbrothers a show," he said, covering his eyes with his forearm. "I don't think they were impressed. They were definitely amused, though."

Obi-Wan with some space bats (baby pygmy chirodactyls from Dathomir) for @mytardisisparked
(ficlet below the cut - that unexpectedly got really unnecessarily angsty - set near the end of the Clone Wars, guest-starring Ventress, ~800 words)
“What are they?”
The creature wrapped its taloned feet around Kenobi’s gauntlet. His beard did not entirely conceal the quirk of a smile. It yawned, showing tiny white teeth, and his expression turned positively saccharine.
She’d known he was soft, vulnerable to the plight of the young, the weak, the simple, but the degree to which he was susceptible to creatures that were all three was really absurd. She had called the right person.
“Some kind of pygmy chirodactyls. Juveniles, I think.”
“From Dathomir,” he supplied, glancing up at her.
She didn’t care to have that look of pity turned on her, even for a moment. He was right, so there was no need to make a reply. She crossed her arms.
“What do you want me to do with them?” he asked, as the creature began to shift towards a more comfortable perch, its little feet hesitantly searching for holds along his greaves.
“A reputable menagerie or a wildlife rehabilitation center. I don’t particularly care which,” she replied with a shrug.
“How did they come into your care?” he asked, eyes back on the creature and stupid smile back on his stupid face.
“One of my bounties was a trader in exotic fauna. They were earmarked for a Trandoshan larder.”
“That wouldn’t do,” he said as the second creature reached a foot out of the basket, grasping his hand. “Hello, little friend,” he greeted, softly. She rolled her eyes. “Why not take them back to Dathomir yourself?” He glanced up at her, clear eyes seeming to look through her soul, the way Ky’s used to.
Because I don’t know if they’re old enough to survive alone. Because I’m not ready to go back there. Because I can’t leave Dathomirian orphans of any kind uncared for in the cold, heartless galaxy, but I know I’m not the nurturing type.
“It’s out of my way. Can’t afford to waste fuel.”
“What do they eat?” he asked, extending his free hand to let the second creature sniff his glove before he caressed the crop of fluff on its misshapen little head.
“Whatever they want to.”
“Carnivores?” he pressed.
“Obviously.”
“One last question, if I can strain your patience more than I already have…”
She favored him with a long suffering sigh, then granted her assent with a gesture.
“How did you get my comm codes?”
“How do you think?”
“Ahsoka,” he said softly, his voice a little rough.
“Don’t bother asking for hers.”
He shook his head, keeping his eyes on the small monstrosities crawling up his arm. “I wouldn’t ask you to violate her trust. I’m glad to know she has allies. And that she could call on me, if she needed to.”
“Are we finished?” she asked, crossing her arms again.
“Once you help me get them back into the basket,” he said.
She bundled up the one that had crawled its way up his bicep and dunked it rather unceremoniously back into the basket. He gave her a reproachful look as he tenderly disengaged the feet tenaciously gripping his gauntlet.
She hesitated for an instant, but in the end the old combat instincts were too strong; she couldn’t see a weak point in an enemy’s defense and not at least attempt to strike a blow.
“I heard what happened to the Mandalorian woman.” She said it as casually as she could, lest he think she was expressing sympathy.
His body went rigid, his expression stony.
“I don’t care to discuss it,” he said stiffly.
He was grieving, so deeply and profoundly that for a moment she caught a whiff of it, that torrid sea of sorrow, raging like a storm below a thick layer of clouds.
Absolutely pathetic.
But. Intriguing.
She’d been there. Not grieving a lover, but a beloved mentor. Letting despair fester into hate, its darkness swallowing up the weak flickering light within her.
She’d wanted to see if it was doing the same to him, if the self-righteous and stainless Knight would follow the same path she’d trodden as a child who’d been foolish enough to let another person touch her heart.
It wasn’t.
She breathed it in a little deeper to search for any hint of the dark, but his light was as blinding as it had ever been, even his sorrow like a cold wind of clean air off of some sea, not like the bubble of diseased miasma still buried deep in her own soul.
“Ventress,” he chided, a note of warning in his voice, that there would be consequences if she continued to paw clumsily at him with the Force, trying to know more of that private sorrow.
But it was still gentle, as though, to him, she was akin to the baby chirodactyls in the basket, pitiful and pitied.
And that chased her off more firmly than anger might have. If she’d succeeded in making him angry, she couldn’t have helped but press her advantage. But his mercy always managed to surprise her; she never had learned how to react when he gave quarter.

 Feral Opress Headcanons
Feral is a beastmaster- he trains and tames the wild fauna of Dathomir
Feral is extremely fierce and protective of the ones he loves especially of his father- Viscus
Sweet honied smiles and starry eyes that carry the mantel of family
HE LIVES TO BE NUDE OR MOSTLY NUDE. I don’t think the nightbrothers are very shy- at least around each other
Very upbeat and Charismatic personality!
Gentle yet firm touch- the touch of a mentor
worn and calloused hands but they’re soft
he enjoys wearing as little as possible but what he does like to wear is light in texture but dark in colour- woven by the spiders
he’s tall for an untransformed nightbrother- 5′10
might add more to this later but i hope you enjoyed it~ ♥️
