Movie #7 of 2024: Man on Fire
Someone at Hulu clearly fucked up and thought this was the Tony Scott/Denzel Washington remake as they even tagged as a "Black Story" (I'm not shitting you).
Speaking of Scotts, Scott Glenn is pitch perfect as the tortured and cynical ex-CIA agent Creasy. Joe Pesci is as naturalistic as ever in any production, shows off his musical chops, and delivers one of the most cringe worthy and homophobic lines in this Italian American co-production shot on location in Lake Como.
Man on Fire contains elements and story structure that inform the current batch of b-action films like John Wick: character building showing the protagonist in the hale of health and happy with life. Living. Loving.... before being brought low by by the actions of criminal cretins who motivate Creasy to take up his violent past to save the girl.
And just like in your John Wicks, once the switch is flipped to VIOLENCE, this film does not let up. The cinematography oozes criminal grime with on location gritty neo-realist/noir locations. The editing is like something out of an arthouse movie and elevates the simple story and plot to a sublime, fever dream of brutal violence and operatic crescendos.
Completely unlike any late 80s action film and worth the watch as it continues to influence future filmmakers to this day.

The structural modifications imposed by Viollet-le-Duc altered the appearance of the [Paris Notre-Dame] cathedral to its very bones. So too did the alterations of the statuary. Much was supplanted, such as the lineup of sculpted Kings of Judea above the front portals. Altogether modern gargoyles, grotesques, and chimeras were inserted. Thus, famous carvings that many tourists and even natives of the French capital may assume to be authentically medieval, and that visitors to Paris today take as emblematic of the cathedral, do not embody the Middle Ages at all. For example, the balustrade figures that are wrongly but universally called gargoyles were fabrications, even falsehoods, of the mid-nineteenth century. The stonework was actually carved and installed between 1843 and 1864.

THE SECRET OF KELLS
Dir. TOMM MOORE (& NORA TWOMEY); Wri. FABRICE ZIOLKOWSKI; Music. BRUNO COULAIS & KILA; Starring. EVAN McQUIRE, BRENDAN GLEESON, CHRISTEN MOONY, MICK LALLY, MICHAEL McGRATH, LIAM HOURICAN, PAUL TYLAK, PAUL YOUNG; R.T. 75 mins; 2009, France/Belgium/Ireland
WHAT IT’S ABOUT:  The Dark Ages Irish Abbey of Kells is the only world that twelve year-old Brendan (McGuire) has ever known, having been brought up under the strict tutelage of his uncle, Abbot Cellach (Gleeson), who is obsessed with completing the massive sanctuary wall intended to protect Kells from attack by rumoured Viking hordes. This all changes with the arrival of Brother Aidan (Lally), a venerable master illuminator charged with the completion of the Book of Iona, a gospel manuscript with illustrations so rich they’re reputed to “turn darkness into light”.  Seeing great artistic potential in Brendan, Aidan enlists his help in the work, inspiring Brendan to go out into the larger world outside the Abbey, where he meets and befriends a spirited forest elf, Aisling (Moony). But there are dangers waiting for him out there too, and the Vikings draw nearer every day …
WHY IT’S AWESOME: I’ll admit, I’d never actually heard of this Oscar-nominated film when I first discovered the work of multi-award-winning animation director Tomm Moore, instead introduced when I encountered 2014’s mesmerising sleeper hit Song of the Sea.  It was only later, as I began to learn more about that film and its masterful creator, that I stumbled across this, his absolute masterpiece, a film of such singular style and immense beauty and power that I was left entirely awestruck. Like many of the best animated features, it’s a feast for all ages, a perfect means to engross children for an hour-and-change but just as fascinating and rewarding for grown-ups, deceptively simple and fun but ultimately proving surprisingly sophisticated once you start digging down through its MANY layers.  It’s a triumph of visual storytelling, Moore and co-director Nora Twomey (The Breadwinner, which Moore also co-directed) eschewing traditional exposition for a near-textbook example of the inherent strengths of Show-Don’t-Tell, and we’re pulled in hook, line and sinker by its well-written, perfectly-pitched characters and exquisitely esoteric, stylised visuals, the animation intentionally invoking the Celtic art and religious iconography resplendent in the film’s subject matter, lending it a rich, delicious, haunting and occasionally unsettling beauty that effortlessly holds the eye.  The voice-cast are uniformly excellent, too – Brendan may have been the only role of note for Evan McGuire, but he made him a compellingly precocious young hero, especially in his interactions with fellow unknown Christen Moony, who brought sweet mischief to youthful fairy Aisling but tempered it with an edge of ancient sadness that yearningly evokes the lost wonder of the legendary Tuatha De Danann she represents, and with acclaimed late Irish character actor Mick Lally (A Man of No Importance), who brought the gleeful twinkle of a favourite uncle to Brother Aidan, while living legend Brendan Gleeson instils cool, stony authority and unshaken integrity in the Abbot of Kells.  There are many moments of simple, wide-eyed wonder and plenty of honest, wholesome belly laughs too, but there’s also a compelling dark side to the film, particularly in the fantastic beast-like portrayal of the Vikings and Brendan’s skin-crawling encounters with ancient Celtic demon Crom Cruach, and a lot of dramatic power to add some epic FEELS to the viewing experience.  Equal parts visually arresting and emotionally enthralling, this truly is one of the most spell-binding animated features to have come along this century, a perfect evocation of an age long since passed, and still the crowning glory of one of the very best filmmakers working in this cinematic art-form today. I’m thoroughly intrigued to see what Tomm Moore will bring us when his latest project, Wolfwalkers, arrives later this year …

“Before Mickey: The Animated Film. 1898-1928” Book review.
I found a short review of Donald Crafton’s book “Before Mickey: The Animated Film 1898-1928” The book itself was published in 1982 with a 2nd edition in 1993, by the University of Chicago Press.
The review I read was written by Fabrice Ziolkowski for Film Quarterly, Volume 36, Number 4 on pages 60-61. The review is very positive and explains that the book is dedicated to combining an analysis of the development of the animation industry in parallel to the film industry, with an accurate study of notable animators who came before Disney.
The review points out that this kind of narrative is important to counter the common misconception that Disney is the father of animation. I agree with the writer in this way, as my current understanding of the industry includes some frustration with Disney, and him being falsely credited with several important developments and processes in animation such as the development of synchronised sound in animation, rotoscoping (both achieved by Max Fleischer) and silhouette animation. (Lotte Reiniger) I think that as much as the book itself is 40 years old, and animation is a much larger industry these days, (with other powerhouse studios such as Laika, Studio Ghibli and Illumination being more widely recognised) the misconception around Disney remains and is perpetuated by the company’s current monopoly on film and television in general.
However, Film Quarterly is also published by the University of Chicago Press and could quite conceivably be more of an advert than a review. Similarly, spaces such as Film Quarterly are often occupied by smaller creators, lesser known creatives and fans of the industry who gravitate more to cult classics and independent productions. This, typically, comes with a resentment of large companies who overshadow smaller, beloved works and it is possible this review is so positive of the book as it credits less well-known animators. This is something I would need to research into more to be certain of, but I can foresee certain biases in the review whether that is imposed by the publisher or the writers own preferences.
Overall, the review was suitably convincing and informative that I intend to take the book out for further research myself, as it seems to align with a personal interest I have in educating myself on the accurate development of an industry I hope to join!

Happy Horse Dave Painting - Happy Horse Dave Fine Art .. | painting of horse face The Crazy Horse Canonizing is sensational, alarming and profound. The carved account in the cliff-side, which I aboriginal appointment by abruptness as I bike on the Mickelson Aisle amid Custer and Hill City is amazing enough, but there is so abundant added to discover. There is additionally a superb Architecture of Built-in Americans of North America (it rivals the Smithsonian’s Architecture in Washington D.C.) area you watch a agitating video that tells the adventure of America’s aboriginal bodies and can appointment the studio/home of the sculptor, Korczak Ziolkowski. It is the highlight of our third day of the Wilderness Voyageurs “Badlands and Mickelson Trail” bike bout of South Dakota.I blitz to accompany a bout (a bashful added fee) that brings us appropriate to the abject of the sculpture. Watch: Animated Short Film 'The Ostrich Politic' Has Something to Say
"An overflow of doubt became a burden on their back." This is a short film that is beautifully made and just as powerful in getting a message across. The Ostrich Politic is an outstanding animated short directed by filmmaker Mohamad Houhou, about a world made up of ostriches, with a society and culture just like our own. The story is about how they are unable to deal with change, visualized by the ostriches and the way they bury their head when ther're afraid. If that isn't a clear reference for what's happening with humanity, then I don't know what is. But the honest storytelling, and impressive animation to go along with it, makes this so soothing and persuasive. Featuring narration by Kester Lovelace & Fabrice Ziolkowski. Enjoy. ›››

Games People Play
Een Hong Sang-soo liefdesganzenbord  ♡  print het spel hier in hoge resolutie!
(bron: magazine Trois Couleurs #132, juni 2015)
With Le pont du Nord, Rivette made explicit the film as game. An old-fashioned "Shoots and Ladders" [or “Snakes and Ladders”] type of board game called "Jeu de l'oie" [ganzenbord] is transposed on to a map of Paris, turning the city streets into a live action board game.
Tumblr media
" The players move their pieces around the board according to the throw of the dice. The object of the game is to reach the center of the board. But there are dangers. Box 19, the Hotel, forces the player to wait two turns. Box 31, the Well, demands you wait for rescue by another player as in boxes 42 and 52, the Labyrinth and the Jail. Box 58 is Death and forces the player to begin the game anew. To play with Jacques Rivette, superimpose the pattern of the board on a map of your city and play with real space and people. Good luck! "

Top Ten Movie List
The Secret of Kells (2009)
A young boy in a remote medieval outpost under siege from barbarian raids is beckoned to adventure when a celebrated master illuminator arrives with an ancient book, brimming with secret wisdom and powers.
Directors: Tomm Moore, Nora Twomey
Writers: Tomm Moore (original story), Fabrice Ziolkowski (screenplay)
Reason: I love the visuals of this film and the layouts of the backgrounds. It has a flat yet ornate style that harks back to illuminated manuscripts. This stylistic choice is linked to the plot and setting of the story. I also enjoy the linework in the character designs.
Coraline (2009)
An adventurous girl finds another world that is a strangely idealized version of her frustrating home, but it has sinister secrets.
Director: Henry Selick
Writers: Henry Selick (screenplay), Neil Gaiman (book)
Reason: I love the colors and character design of this movie. It also has many interesting shots and sets. I’m drawn to stories that contain otherworldly elements clashing with reality. Also, this film has an amazing original score by French composer Bruno Coulais.
Toy Story (1995)
A cowboy doll is profoundly threatened and jealous when a new spaceman figure supplants him as top toy in a boy's room.
Director: John Lasseter
Writers: John Lasseter (original story by), Pete Docter (original story by), Joss Whedon, Andrew Stanton, Joel Cohen, Alec Sokolow (screenplay)
Reason: I watched this movie a lot as a kid, so it’s been imprinted on my brain and is very quotable. I enjoy the way this movie was written and acted, especially the quips and banter between the characters. There are also some funny visual gags that I enjoy.
A Town Called Panic (2009)
Three plastic toys named Cowboy, Indian and Horse share a house in a rural town. Cowboy and Indian plan to surprise Horse with a homemade barbecue for his birthday. However, they accidentally order 50 million bricks instead of the 50 they actually require. This sets off a chain of events as the trio travel to the center of the earth, trek across frozen tundra and discover a parallel underwater universe of pointy-headed (and dishonest) creatures.
Directors: Stéphane Aubier, Vincent Patar
Writers: Stéphane Aubier (screenplay), Vincent Patar (screenplay)
Reason: This movie is very surreal, over the top, and fast paced. I love the simple yet outrageous premise, as it reminds me of the kind of stories I enjoy writing, where simple actions are taken to the extreme. Listening to the film with the original French audio is important for me because I don’t know French, so everything just feels more feverish and nonsensical.
Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Jack Skellington, king of Halloweentown, discovers Christmas Town, but his attempts to bring Christmas to his home cause confusion.
Director: Henry Selick
Writers: Tim Burton (based on: a story and characters by), Michael McDowell (adaptation)
Reason: This film has a very simple, familiar premise and storyline, but it’s executed tightly and with a great, twisted visual style. The set designs are especially wonderful. I watched this movie frequently as a little kid, so it’s endearing to me.
Song of The Sea (2014)
Ben, a young Irish boy, and his little sister Saoirse, a girl who can turn into a seal, go on an adventure to free the faeries and save the spirit world.
Director: Tomm Moore
Writers: Will Collins (as William Collins), Tomm Moore (story by)
Reason: This is by the same studio as The Secret of Kells, and I enjoy both films equally. This movie is newer and has some more ambitious designs and effects, but still has a great simplicity in the character designs and linework, which I love. This film is calm and for the most part, quiet.
Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989)
A young witch, on her mandatory year of independent life, finds fitting into a new community difficult while she supports herself by running an air courier service.
Director: Hayao Miyazaki
Writers: Eiko Kadono (novel), Hayao Miyazaki (screenplay)
Reason: This is another movie I watched a lot as a kid and related to as I grew up. I like the characters and how the plot is casual and there’s not a lot going on, it’s just this girl living trying to live out on her own. But I enjoy the main character so much that I don’t mind just watching her go about her life rather than some intense, high stakes adventure.
The Incredibles (2004)
A family of undercover superheroes, while trying to live the quiet suburban life, are forced into action to save the world.
Director: Brad Bird
Writer: Brad Bird
I don’t usually like superhero movies, but I really enjoy this movie. I love the mid-century inspired designs, the composition of the shots, and the lighting and colors used. The plot and the characters are well written and likeable. It’s just a really well executed film.
Sleeping Beauty (1959)
After being snubbed by the royal family, a malevolent fairy places a curse on a princess which only a prince can break, along with the help of three good fairies.
Director: Clyde Geronimi
Writers: Erdman Penner (story adaptation), Charles Perrault (story "Sleeping Beauty")
Reason: In my opinion, this film has the best design of any Disney movie. I really love the linework in the hair and clothing. The backgrounds and characters have somewhat angular and geometric designs, which is something I like to do with characters I design. The sets feel very open and almost stage-like.
Yellow Submarine (1968)
The Beatles agree to accompany Captain Fred in his Yellow Submarine and go to Pepperland to free it from the music hating Blue Meanies.
Director: George Dunning
Writers: Lee Minoff (original story), John Lennon, Paul McCartney (based upon a song by)
Reason: I enjoy the imagery of this film more so than anything to do with the plot. I love the flowing and colorful character designs in this movie. I also really enjoy animated sequences set to music; song sequences are oftentimes my favorite parts of animated films, because that’s where the imagery and colors become the most emotive. This film is the perfect example of this.
