day 23 of @flufftober: POV outsider fire emblem: three houses f!Byleth x Manuela
Verdant Rain Moon, 1180
Hanneman was already late to his meeting with Manuela and Byleth to discuss their curriculum for the next few weeks. Lateness did not come to him naturally, but it was easier when he had help from Annette and Linhardt to misplace his belongings. He bet he still made it to the meeting before Manuela did though. And that was some small consolation.
He finally found the smaller, rougher bound book with his recent notes in it hidden underneath some scrolls and inkwells on his shelf. Shaking his head he wondered whether it was Lindhardt's forgetful and blasè perusal through his collection of tomes or Annette's frantic energy when she helped him write up more legible notes that lead him to this moment as he rushed down the hall and to the left, leading to the large but private meeting room.
"My apologies," he began as he pushed the heavy door open, but what he saw beyond the threshold made him pause. Not only was Manuela there, but she was seated so close to Byleth that they were touching shoulders. And Byleth had one hand pointing at the page in the book that lay between them, her other hand barely rested against Manuela's, their fingertips brushing each other. Both of them had smiles on their faces.
But the noise broke them apart, Byleth scooted away and ushered Hanneman to sit in the seat next to her. "Good morning! Manuela was just answering a question I had, but we're ready to talk about the curriculum if you are," she said it with a little too much ease, and a quick small grin in Manuela's direction that left Hanneman feeling like he was missing something.
He stared at them a moment longer before digressing and taking his seat next to Byleth. Manuela was being uncharacteristically quiet, and it occurred to him that maybe he interrupted a more serious conversation. Matters of the heart, perhaps? As it always was with Manuela, and Byleth was surely a better confidante than himself.
Hanneman cleared his throat, opened up his notebook and began discussing his planned changes to next week's set of assignments, knowing that Manuela and Byleth could finish their conversation later.
Ethereal Moon, 1180
They had only made it halfway through the ball when Hanneman noticed that Manuela was absent. He rolled his eyes and scanned the room, hoping she just went to get a drink, but knowing that she probably swept up some knight and ushered him away. Of the four chaperones, he saw Seteth hovering a few footsteps away from Flayn (as per usual), not too close to draw her ire, but close enough to fix any young man with a dangerous glare. He then moved his gaze over to Byleth who was talking to Marianne and Leonie, gesturing toward her head and the exit, as if she was saying she felt ill and was intending to leave. He watched her nod apologetically a few more times before she slipped out the door.
And Manuela was still nowhere in sight.
Hanneman huffed and set off at a brisk pace to go find her. With Byleth gone and all of the knights still out on assignment, they needed every chaperone they could get here, Manuela's love life be damned. He made a bee-line to the Goddess Tower, knowing the rumors that spread throughout the monastery every year around Establishment Day and that Manuela--a hopeless romantic--would be there with whomever she scooped up this time.
His lungs and legs burned with his quick pace, followed by an ascent up the stairs. He wanted to be back before Seteth took notice that he was the lone chaperone. Manuela was so lucky he was coming after her to keep her out of trouble. As he slowed down for the last few steps, he heard a curious voice from the top of the stairs.
"Manny." It was Byleth. "You don't have to answer now."
Manny? As in Manuela? He heard the unmistakable sniffles of Manuela in tears and he felt a wave of dread and hot rage. He was probably hearing something he shouldn't be, but if Byleth was the one to make her cry--
"And whatever you choose, I'll be here for you, no matter what." Well now he was just hopelessly confused. What kind of question would prompt Manuela to cry? And why would Byleth care so much about the answer, but not change her perception of her? Maybe Manuela was dating Jeralt? And Byleth was just protecting her father?
Now he was just speculating on something he should not be hearing, something he should not be a part of. This is how rumors start. Hanneman hastily turned and descended the stairs as quietly as he could, eager to rid himself of the guilt of eavesdropping and thinking the worst of Manuela.
When he returned to the ball, two-thirds of the students remained and Seteth seemed unperturbed as he fetched Flayn another cup of water from the refreshment table. Hanneman got himself a drink and a small dessert to try and calm his nerves, this was nothing that peach sorbet couldn't fix.
As he finished his last bites of sorbet, he saw Manuela waltz back into the room, her eyes were less red and puffy than he expected, and she actually had a smile on her face. She spoke to Ferdinand and Lorenz in her normal over-the-top manner, as if she hadn't been crying a few minutes ago. Whatever had happened in the Goddess Tower, it seemed as if it ended okay for her and Hanneman hoped that was true. As obnoxious as Manuela could be, she did deserve to be happy.
Guardian Moon, 1185
He could not overstate his joy in returning to the monastery after the last 5 years. It felt like something was finally changing, hopefully in their favor. As soon as he and Manuela had received word from Claude, they immediately packed up and headed back to their old home. What Claude had failed to tell them was that someone else was waiting for them when they got there.
As they walked into the entrance hall of the monastery, an achingly familiar flash of light green entered his vision followed by a shriek from Manuela beside him. She dropped the two small bags she was carrying (compared to the 5 bags he was carrying, most of which were hers) and sprinted in a way he did not think she was capable of into the arms of Byleth, alive and well.
He set down his bags as well and approached his fellow professors, happy that they were all together again, though he had endless questions for Byleth about where she went and how her crest fit into all of this. After placing a curious kiss on the top of Manuela's head, Byleth let the other woman go and wrapped her arms around Hanneman next. He did not expect to receive a hug, he wasn't a fan of physical affection by any means, but seeing Byleth after thinking her dead for so long, things like that didn't matter.
"It's good to see you," he told her as he pulled away.
"More than good," Manuela continued for him, sounding on the verge of tears again. He quickly dug around in his pocket and offered her his handkerchief which she accepted gratefully.
"It's more than good to see you too, both of you," Byleth looked between them and wrapped her arms around Manuela again as she started to sob earnestly into her shoulder.
When it looked like Manuela wasn't going to stop any time soon, he cleared his throat and announced he would take their bags to their offices. Byleth nodded and waved, her other hand carding through Manuela's hair.
As he walked away, balancing a few bags precariously in his arms, he heard Byleth mumble, "Let's go take a walk, Manny."
Followed by Manuela's soft but shaky voice, "For so long, I thought--I thought I was alone again."
Hanneman quickened his steps, feeling that he was hearing something he shouldn't again. Alone? How could Manuela feel alone? She had Dorothea, Flayn, Seteth, the opera company, himself--but come to think of it, as the war started, when they lost Byleth and Rhea, Manuela had become a dourer version of herself. She rarely spoke of any impending suitors, or her future as an unmarried woman, which were some of her favorite topics when they were all still professors. She never went out on dates as far as he knew, they mostly just kept their heads down and worked on whatever helped aide Claude and the Leicester Alliance in the war effort. She seemed the most happy and like her old self when she was singing or helping in the medical tents and offices.
He felt ashamed that he hadn't seen it for what it was then. They were all suffering but Hanneman underestimated what Byleth meant to Manuela and didn't comfort her when she needed it most. He sighed and placed Manuela's bags in the infirmary, then walked across the hall to begin unpacking his bags. As he pulled tome after tome, he vowed to do better. They all needed to be strong for each other.
Pegasus Moon, 1186
Well color him absolutely flabbergasted.
"You're asking me what?" He grabbed his monocle and began cleaning it furiously with his handkerchief, as if that would help him hear the request better.
Byleth laughed nervously and cleared her throat. "I said, I'm going to ask for Manuela's hand in marriage. And I would like your blessing, if you will give it."
Hanneman stopped and stared at his monocle in his hand for a long while. "Marriage," he repeated. "You're going to ask for her hand in marriage? Does she even know your intentions? That you'd like to be involved with her... romantically?"
She let out a much louder, much surer laugh. A guffaw. Not a noise he would expect from the ruler of Fodlan.
"What's the matter?" he demanded, placing his monocle back on his eye.
"Nothing," she covered her mouth while she let a few more giggles escape. "It's just that I'd hope she would know my intentions by now. I've made them very clear to her since before the war, when we were all still professors."
Hanneman felt time slow to a crawl. Before the war? Was he really that dense? But that closeness he witnessed, the kisses he assumed were platonic, something women who were close did, were more. He rubbed his forehead, feeling his cheeks heat up in embarrassment.
"But maybe I didn't make them clear enough since you didn't notice, and you're her best friend." If he didn't know Byleth as well as he did, he would think her blank face and delivery were serious, but he could hear the teasing in her voice and he groaned internally.
"In my defense, there were bigger things to worry about. A war, for one," he tried, shaking his head when Byleth smiled widely at him. He turned to the window instead so he could focus on getting the words out and send Byleth on her way so he could bond with his tomes in peace. "I'm honored that you and Manuela regard me so highly, and I'm honored to give you my blessing to be wed."
And it was true. They did not need his permission to get married, but the fact that Byleth was here asking him tugged at his heart strings. She walked over to stand beside him, taking in the bustling city below and the brilliant blue sky overhead. She put her hand on his shoulder and gave it a reassuring squeeze.
"Thank you, Hanneman," she said softly, as if she could sense the burning in the back of his throat at the pride and affection he was feeling. "It means a lot to both of us."
He nodded then took a deep breath and waved her off. "Okay, there are correspondences I must get to. I'll see you at brunch tomorrow."
"Alright, take care," she responded with a smile and left his office with a wave.
Hanneman took another few moments at the window to regain his composure, but he knew he was already doomed. If he was already at the point of tears just talking about Byleth and Manuela's wedding, then he'll definitely be bawling his eyes out at the ceremony itself.
Garland Moon, 1187
What he expected to be a grand ceremony was actually quiet and cozy. Byleth and Manuela were married in the ruins of the Garreg Mach cathedral. He sat next to Seteth and Flayn and he did, in fact, cry but not as much as Flayn. He dug around in his cloak for his extra handkerchief and handed it to her. When she accepted it gratefully, he watched her pass it to Seteth who was also tearing up.
When the ceremony was finished, they all retired to the gardens as the sun set. Food was still being prepared in the Garreg Mach kitchens, but he was able to snatch a few appetizers for himself before the plates were picked clean. He hadn't seen everyone since the war ended, he was able to catch up with Linhardt, Lysithea, and Annette as well as the rest of his former house and the students from other houses. They had all grown so much and he wished they didn't have to do it in the shadow of war.
As he excused himself to go grab a drink, he walked into the dining hall and passed by the door that led out to the pond and greenhouse and he heard a sharp, "Hanneman! Hanneman! Get over here!" He poked his head out of the door and saw Byleth and Manuela leaning against what was left of the stone wall next to the stairs. They had a bottle of wine between them and three glasses.
A beverage, indeed. He walked out to greet them, they looked unimaginably happy and glowing and it felt infectious. "Is this where all the wine went?"
"Haha, Hanny," Manuela replied, apparently already a few glasses in since he had never heard that nickname before. She rested her head on Byleth's shoulder who snaked an arm around her. "Come have a drink."
Hanneman grabbed the last glass and Byleth tipped the bottle toward it, when it was full they all clinked the glasses together. "To the happy couple."
"And to the friendships that got us through the darkest times," Byleth added before they all took a swig.
Hanneman smiles around the rim of his cup, feeling relieved that they could experience this all together without the fear of war on the horizon, feeling lucky to have these two amazing women in his life, and feeling so happy for them to have found each other.

Ethical Valentines for Professor Byleth Eisner
I have been meaning to do this for sometime but with Engage coming out, I thought the time for this was passed. However, Engage’s S-support threw-up a lot of controversy given that the Japanese S-support dialogues were clearly romantics, even when the S-support target was 12-year old Anne.
So I thought, you know, with valentines around the corner, I can finally explore the concept of “ethical valentines for Byleth”! Since I normally play F!Byleth, I’ll be using she/her but stuff I discuss applies to M!Byleth and I certainly will be discussing pairings that are gender locked to M!Byleth.
Now to be clear, given that Byleth’s support with her students and faculty generally do not take a romantic turn until the war phase, by which time almost all of them are legal adults by both modern and Fodlan standards, from the game’s point of view. There is no Alear x Anne situation.
However, many FE3H fans still accuse Byleth of grooming and highlight the power dynamic between her and the students to argue that no student S-pairing is okay. But this all neglects to take into account the fact of what Byleth is in-game. So let’s start with Byleth!
When the game opens, Byleth Eisner is only 21 years old and she wakes up in a room that she seems to be sharing with her father. In Hopes, Jeralt confirms that Byleth has no friends and generally limits her social interaction. That doesn’t mean, of course, that Byleth is virgin. She might well have been enjoying herself with her fellow mercenaries when Jeralt was off drinking. But that part of her life is somewhat of a blank that we the players can fill in however we choose. But even if you assume that Byleth romantic body count is almost as high as her kill count, it doesn’t change the fact that she is a 21 year old with limited social circle at the beginning of the game.
I think this is important because many people who have issues with Byleth’s student pairings are usually pro Byleth x Faculty. But given that Byleth is 21, the majority of faculty relationship with Byleth as actually creepy and exploitative towards Byleth.
Hanneman is in his 50s, Manuela is at best late 30s but more likely in her mid 40s. They are both way too old for 21 year old Byleth! As for the Nabatheans, Rhea and Seteth are hundreds, if not thousands of years old. If we say that Byleth x Students is bad because of age gap, and you want to be consistent, you can’t be okay with Byleth x Seteth or Rhea.
However, I do think Flayn might be different. Because we don’t actually know how long Flayn lived for before she went to sleep. In Hopes, Seteth explains that Flayn was very young when she overtaxed her body and as a result she’s sleeping for a long time. If her development was arrested when she was a teenager, she’s not in the same category as Seteth or Rhea because Flayn has NOT been collecting life experiences. Because ultimately, when people complain about Byleth’s pairings being “problematic”, what it usually boils down to is that there is a life experience gap between Byleth and her romantic partner. So depending on at what age Flayn went to sleep, you can argue that the fact she’s no different to an young adult going into suspended animation today and waking up in the far future. The arrested development puts Flayn close to Byleth.
Incidentally, I think the same arrested development argument works for Alear because Alear was both asleep and had a memory reset. So the fact that she was alive a 1000 year ago doesn’t matter when it comes to ethnical considerations about whether she should be jumping into bed with Diamant, Alfred or any of the other adult Engage characters. Because age gap is about experience but if you suffered from arrested development and don’t have the mental maturity for your age, I think just citing age gaps misses the point of why age gaps can be problematic.
This is a good segue into the students. Now the oldest of Byleth’s students are Sylvain and Mercedes. They are 19 and 22 at the start of the game. So age gap objection cleared! The issue it both is that Byleth is a professor and Sylvain and Mercedes are students over whom Byleth has enough influence that she can get them to go against the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus.
Now Mercedes can betray the Kingdom in Hopes as well, which makes sense given that she is originally from the Empire. But Sylvain does not betray the Kingdom in Hopes. So you can argue that Byleth being able to influence Sylvain into betraying his country, family, and King with whom he grew-up, means that Byleth has enough influence over him that she could make him do things he wouldn’t otherwise. But in terms of power, Sylvain is a wealthy noble from a powerful family who doesn’t have to be at the Academy. Like he can leave anytime and in Hopes, most of the students do just leave.
Mercedes is a commoner with little power. So you can argue that Byleth, despite being a year younger, probably has a power imbalance with her. However, a lot of Byleth’s charm power comes from the fact that many of her students are in a bad place in life, mental health wise. Both Mercedes and Sylvain have issues, especially with boundaries. So there is an argument that Byleth should stir clear of these two despite their being no age gap between them.
Before moving on to the other students, let me say something briefly about Jeritza, who is the same age as Byleth but given his mental health issues, his fixation on Byleth, I personally find him a problematic S-support. But he’s also only available in Crimson Flower and you can argue that Crimson Flower Byleth is perfectly equal to Jeritza both in power, age etc. So if you say he’s perfect for her, I am not going to argue.
Now most of the other students are 4-6 years younger then Byleth and commoner or noble, are psychologically vulnerable. That said, I would like to point out that in terms of raw power, Byleth is way down the pecking order to someone like Dimitri. What power Byleth has, she has because Rhea gave it to her. We know from Hopes that without Rhea or Shez’s endorsement, she’s just a mercenary. Yes the Ashen Demon has some brand recognition but its still very limited recognition. But I can see why some people might find Byleth’s pre-time-skip actions “grooming”.
Post-time-skip is interesting because while Byleth can technically be argued to be 26 when she rejoins the student, I would like to point out that she was basically in a coma. She did NOT acquire any additional experience, make additional memories. Per the suspended animation argument before, is mentally still 21. Indeed, given the nature of what happened, you can even argue that she’s probably physically 21 too!
So post-time-skip, there is a a real argument that she’s younger then almost everybody but Cyril and Lysithea, depending on when you set Byleth’s birthday. Power wise, war phase is interesting in that you can argue that she has the least power during Crimson Flower because she has no power independent of Edelgard.
She is arguably more powerful then Dimitri for the first half of Azure Moon because he’s a prince in exile while she, the head of the church, has Garreg Mach Monastery. Also, religious power tends to be more mobile because she has a power-base wherever there are people faithful to the church of Serios. While Dimitri’s power is location based and since he’s not in control of the Kingdom.
I would say she and Claude are equal in Verdant Wind and of course, she’s flying solo in Silver Snow. That all said, you can argue that Dimitri is back to being more powerful then Byleth at the end of Azure Moon, as the king of United Fodlan. But power plays are never that clean.
However, Byleth is the most powerful person in all of Fodlan in Silver Snow and Verdant Wind. But given that we know that Claude becomes the King of Almyra in Verdant Wind, you can argue he’s her equal after becoming the King of Kings (note, I don’t know if Alymra was like Ancient Persia or the Ottoman Empire, but its my headcanon).
So by the end of the game, I think all power-based equality goes out the window for anyone outside of Dimitri and Claude because no one else is Byleth’s equal in Azure Moon and Verdant Wind, once she becomes the Archbishop of the Church of Serios and/or the Ruler of United Fodlan. In Crimson Flower, she destroys her own powerbase and any power she has after is by the grace of Edelgard. So if Byleth ever loses Edelgard’s favour, she’s nothing.
However, Byleth is equal to the other students in Crimson Flower. While I would argue that she has a power imbalance with her commoner students in every other route but are probably on equal footing with most of the noble students in non-Crimson Flower route.
Now I am sure you have noticed that so far, I have not mentioned two people. Catherine and Shamir. In my opinion, if you want to be as ethnical as possible with your selection of romantic partner, both from an in-game and meta perspective, your best bets are Catherine and Shamir.
Both of them pass the age gap test on account of being close to Byleth’s age. Their relative older age means that unlike Mercedes and Sylvain, they have had more time to figure out their core values and principles. Also, Catherine is a noble while Shamir is a foreigner. Both of them can leave if their relationship with Byleth doesn’t work out.
To me, part of being in an ethical relationship isn’t just about how good the dynamic is when you are together but how much worse off one partner can be compared to the other IF things turn sour. But this works both ways.
Both Dimitri and Claude can potentially make Byleth’s life hell if her relationship with either goes sour. Technically, Byleth could make Catherine’s life hell if things go sour. But Catherine in an unique position where she can rely on her House’s power if she needs it but she’s also lived independently long enough that she can just walk away to protect her house if needed.
Shamir can up and leave for Dagda if she no longer wanted anything to do with Byleth. So I think, on the whole, if you want to avoid issues with age gaps, power imbalances, do the right thing by Byleth and her partner, this valentines day, S-support Catherine and Shamir!
I, of course, am not very ethical and my Byleth will be modifying Dimitri whether he wants to be modified or not, and living a long life with him! My Byleth doesn’t care about ethnics when it comes to Dimitri! ^.^

Byleth is thrust into a brand new world when she's made a professor at the Garreg Mach Monastery. It doesn't take long until she's thrust into something - er, someONE - else.
So I started playing Three Houses at the beginning of this month, and I'm enjoying my time with it. Honestly, this was my exact reaction when that 'lock the door' line came up. I suppose this is spoilers for one of the first conversations in the game.

Summoning Ritual (F!Byleth x Edelgard)
Rating: General Audience Archive Warning: N/A Words: 2,066 Summary:  The time has come when they must summon their professors. Edelgard is nervous, but it appears that luck may be on her side...
Tumblr media
A/N: It started with a BS idea. Now it became a BS one shot. Just thinking about the Fate series concept of Master-Servant. Enjoy this random drabble! Am hoping to work on a Fate/Three Houses crossover series soon for comedy. (Comedy to an extent, of course.)
---
Here at the Officer’s Academy, something magical has happened. Various students from all three Houses stood in their classroom, their eyes all aimed at their house leaders.
Dimitri from the Blue Lions.
Claude from the Golden Deer.
Edelgard from the Black Eagles.
Three of the royal members of their family are in full preparation for what is to come. They cannot miss a single item on their checklist. Should they fail to do so, their efforts would be all for naught. Their classmates showered them with praises, luck, prayers, and even a snack for the long, arduous process.
“I wish you the best of luck, Lady Edelgard,” Hubert bowed his head, hand placed on his chest. “I have great faith in you.”
“You got this! If anything, I’ll be punching good vibes to your way!” Caspar nodded. As if to emphasize his encouragement, he began jabbing at the air. It would have continued had it not been for Linhardt slapping one of his flurried hands with a flick of his wrist.
“If there is anyone that can do it, it’s you, Edelgard,” Ferdinand tilted his head. “I know that for a fact.”
“Edie, make sure to take your time. It would be bad if the ritual failed because you were in a rush,” Dorothea handed her a small bag of… charcoaled cookies. (Edelgard is currently suppressing a mortified expression.) “I’m sorry these are a little burnt, but I’m sure these will give you energy!”
“I will be a here, praying for your safe return,” Petra bowed in a similar fashion as Hubert. “I heard this ritual is something of a tradition in this monastery.”
“I think the archbishop is just lazy to recruit new professors.”
“Linhardt!” Bernadetta swung her head towards him. “H-How could you say that!?”
He shrugged. “Why do you think this is the first year she proposed this idea?”
“W-W-Well, she might not want to come out of her room!”
“She’s not you, Bernedetta…”
“You’ve always got a sharp tongue, Linhardt.”
“Aren’t you one to say, Hubert.”
The noble scratched her cheek, beads of sweat flying out of her head. Her comrades and classmates were lively. Although Edelgard’s heart is racing, a small wave of nausea pulsed within her stomach, and her fingers were trembling, they soothed her shaken soul. She licked the bottom of her lip and gave a small huff.
“Thank you, everyone, for your kind words. I must now be off.”
Everyone in the Black Eagles waved their farewells as she turned her back towards them. When she took a step out of the lecture room, Claude and Dimitri both exited at the same time. The three paused in their place. They exchanged looks.
“Isn’t this a coincidence,” Claude placed both hands behind his head. His signature smile flashed at his rivals. “You both ready for this?”
“Of course,” Edelgard placed a hand on her hip. “I will be sure to summon a professor worthy to teach our house.”
“Likewise,” Dimitri faintly smiled. “It would be nice to have a professor who can lead our house to victory in the upcoming festival.”
“Isn’t that too far away, though?” the Golden Deer’s house leader mused. “We still have more than half a year to go.”
“It’s never too early to think ahead.”
“I agree with Dimitri.”
“If you both say so… I’ll just sit back and watch you both go at it.”
The other two leaders chuckled as they proceeded to walk towards the holy ground. It was not far and took less than five minutes by foot. However, each step brought them closer to an important ground. In their hands were the necessary ingredients for the archaic ritual. They gulped. One misstep and it’s all over for their house. The last thing they would want is to be stuck with a horrific instructor for the rest of their school life.
“Welcome, my children,” Rhea greeted them once they’ve arrived. As they got to their destined spot, the holy maiden graced her hands at the marked flooring before them. Black inked patterns drawn within the circle were scrawled all over the pristine surface. She let out a small exhale. “This is the first time in the history of Fodlan and the Officer’s Academy to conduct this ritual. It is a summoning ritual that will call forth not only your professor but your Servant too. This is an important role of a new Master.”
Right… Servant and Master. They were terminologies that were vaguely touched upon in this country. Apparently, they were from a famous magical war called the “Holy Grail War” in a land called “Japan.” Not that the citizens of Fodlan would know. The reason why Rhea decided to pursue this was due to the ease of access to the houses’ mentors. It would save her plenty of time to search for a suitable teacher. Based on the house leader’s personality, they would be likely matched with a Servant of a similar attitude. Plus, since these students are trained for battle, a Servant’s battle status is beneficial to teaching them the ropes with their potent abilities. There is also the limited time of when a Servant can stay with their Master. Until their Master either dies, chooses to free them, or finishes their schooling, the Servant is stuck by the house leader’s side.
Alas, it is simple on paper though! Physical and mental fortitude are required to make this a reality. Otherwise, a disappointing result will shortly follow.
“Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd.”
“Guess I’m the first one up…”
The blonde stepped forward. He walked up to the magic circle and began to place the necessary items. He spoke of incantations for the ritual.
Manuela came to him.
“Claude von Riegan.”
The brown-haired stepped forward. He walked up to the magic circle and began to place the necessary items. He spoke of incantations for the ritual.
Hanneman came to him.
“Edelgard von Hresvelg.”
The white-haired stepped forward. She walked up to the magic circle and began to place the necessary items.
Her heart thumped hard; she could hear it from her eardrums! A piece of green fabric. A pile of salt. A small stone from ancient times. A small vial of blood from an eagle poured upon the marked crest. Edelgard backed away and watched the circle begin to faintly glow. She closed her eyes. Darkness enveloped her vision as she deeply inhaled.
‘ Focus, El, focus! ‘
She touched upon her bloodline’s Crest of Seiros and extended her opened hand at the markings. One hand holding the outreached arm, the noble began to chant an incantation for the ritual.
“Let silver and steel be the essence. Let stone and the archduke of contracts be the foundation Let red the color I pay tribute to Let my great Master Hresvelg be the ancestor Let rise a wall against the wind that shall fall Let the four cardinal gates close Let the three-forked road from the crown reaching unto the Kingdom rotate.
I hereby declare Your body shall serve under me My fate shall be your sword Submit to the beckoning of the Church of Seiros If you will submit to this will and this reason… Then answer!
An oath shall be sworn here! I shall attain all virtues of all of Heaven I shall have dominion over all evils of all of Hell!”
A searing burn spread on the back of her right hand. It was as if someone pierced the skin with an iron knife! She immediately grimaced; her eyes narrowed as she felt a huge gust of wind blow in her direction. Just like Dimitri and Claude, a gust of wind whipped against her. This time, she was the direct target of the powerful blow. Edelgard’s knees bent at the immense pressure. Still, she maintained her stance and bit back a yelp.
The whole room became bright red. It was bright enough that everyone was forced to shut their eyes. Unlike Dimitri’s light blue and Claude’s golden yellow, their eyes instinctively avoided hazardous exposure.
“…?”
No one was there at the magic circle. All of the items were left untouched on the floor.
“…”
Did she fail? Even Rhea was a bit perplexed at the sight. The archbishop slowly examined the quiet premise. Aside from Manuela and Hanneman, no other professor showed up. Claude and Dimitri exchanged nervous glances as Edelgard felt her shoulders slump.
“Did I fail?”
“Edelgard…”
Dimitri started to approach her. He reached out towards her shoulder and eventually gave it a gentle pat.
“I’m so sorry.”
Edelgard hardly heeded any attention to him. She brought her right hand up. The burning sensation now throbbed, its red marking resembling an unknown crest fading into a black tattoo. Was it even possible to fail with the Command Seals still intact?
Shortly after that train of thought, a loud crash came from deep inside the holy ground. It shook the ground beneath their feet, all four present members nearly losing their balance. They were alarmed.
“Is that an intruder?!” Claude immediately pulled out his bow. “What an unlucky timing!”
Edelgard and Dimitri followed suit and unsheathed their weapon of choice. Rhea backed away as the three students and two Servants ran to the source.
It was surreal.
A teal-haired woman sat on a pile of rubble. The abnormal hole that cracked through the decorated ceiling shone the sun’s ray upon the newcomer. It was as if it were a beacon of light from the heavens above. Bits of debris crumbled upon the resting figure. An archaic sword at hand, the young adult raised her head.
‘ She looks like a queen… ‘ Edelgard widened her eyes. ‘ She’s beautiful. ‘
“…”
It took a bit of time until she broke their silence by standing. This made the three students gasp as both Hanneman and Manuela moved in front of them. Respectively Casters, they raised their hands in preparation. Not that they needed to. The unknown female walked up to one of the students nearest to her: Edelgard.
“Tell me,” she softly spoke. “Are you my Master?”
“Um— Y-Yes. Yes, I’m your Master.” Edelgard scrambled for words as she felt a flash of heat run into her head. “I’m Edelgard von Hresvelg.”
The Servant blinked. Then, she cracked a small smile. (Unironically, Edelgard's heart skipped a beat! The smile was so pretty!)
“I am Byleth of the Saber Class.” As if out of a fairytale, Byleth reached out to grab ahold of Edelgard’s unoccupied hand. She got down to one knee and, as a knight, looked up to the house leader. “I will teach and protect you with my life.”
A blast of heat blew out of Edelgard’s ears as she began to open her mouth like a fish deprived of water.
“I-I— Yes! YES! Um— I mean… it would… be a pleasure having you as my queen-- I... I mean, Servant.”
She could not help but let out an additional comment afterward. This time, she didn’t mean to let it slip out.
“You’re so beautiful though.”
Byleth blinked. That caused Edelgard to immediately regret the sudden words that flew out of her lips. She dropped her axe and concealed her mouth, her pupils looking anywhere but the teacher’s face. This caused a chuckle to come from the older female. She squeezed Edelgard’s hand.
“Thank you for the compliment. I am happy to serve someone who is even more beautiful than I.”
That’s it, that did it for Edelgard. The Black Eagles’s house leader felt a mini-mushroom explosion occur on top of her head. This caused the Saber class to raise both brows when her Master became beet red.
Meanwhile, Dimitri and Claude squinted their eyes.
“What the Hell?” Claude mumbled. “Why did she get the hot one?”
“I’m impressed, Edelgard,” Dimitri crossed his arms. “I didn’t think you would summon someone like her…”
“Just... damn, just look at her. Why did I get an old man?”
“You’re one to talk. I got someone who is much older than Byleth.”
“Hey, at least yours is a woman. Mine is a dude! I’m not into old guys.”
“…I wonder what goes through your mind sometimes, Claude.”
“I’ll be blunt this time: I’m jealous.”
“It appears that this is something we both have in common.”
“I hope you both understand that we can hear you both loud and clear,” Manuela and Hanneman both remarked at the same time, their frowns evident.

The Best Medicine (FE: Three Houses Short Fic)
Ashe and f!Byleth
----
“Ow...!” Byleth said as Ashe was wrapping her arm.
“S-Sorry!” He replied, starting to be a bit more gentle.
During the last battle, Ashe was trying to shoot Pegasus knights out of the air that were getting too close to them, but a bandit snuck up from behind and was about to attack using a spell, until his professor jumped in the way.
Though most of the spell was reflected off from her sword, the fire caught her arm, burning it.
Once the battle was over, their professor began kneeling over in pain, dropping her sword.
Now, they were in the Monastery’s infirmary, though Ashe insisted that he be there to help Byleth.
“...Professor, may I be blunt for a moment?”
“Go ahead.”
“What you did there was reckless! You should’ve shouted out to me, or something like that!”
Well, she had. That wasn’t enough to save him from near death, so after using Divine Pulse, that was the next best thing. Though, she couldn’t exactly tell him this.
“I’m sorry, I-”
“You’re our professor, you shouldn’t be putting yourself in danger like that!”
“But, you’re my student! I’d be devastated if-”
“Do you know how much WE would be devastated if you got killed?!”
“...!”
“Our class has been through so much already and...I...”
Ashe started clenching his hands, his voice getting more and more quiet.
“I’ve lost too many people I care about already...My parents, Christophe, Lonato...If something happened to you...!-”
He looked away from Byleth, trying his best not to tear up.
“You’re someone precious to me, professor. I don’t want to see you putting yourself in danger like that! Especially for...a commoner like me.”
Byleth reached her bandaged hand to Ashe’s and held it gently.
“Ashe...I don’t care if you’re a commoner or not, you and all the students are precious to me too. I’ll do everything I can to keep everyone safe...to keep you safe.”
He looked at his hand, and slowly but surely, a smile came to him as well.
He flipped it over, and held her hand as well, both of them enjoying how it felt.
“Thank you, professor...”
Manuela came back through the door, and started laughing as soon as she looked over to the two.
“Oh sorry, want me to leave you two alone for a little longer?~”
They both raised an eyebrow until they looked at their hands.
“O-OH!” Ashe said, drawing his hand back immediately.
“Sorry, I-I didn’t know what I was thinking!”
At first, Byleth didn’t react, Ashe thinking that she was angry. Then, he saw her starting to blush eyes going wide.
“Oh...I-It’s alright...”
To anyone else, it sounded like she didn’t particularly care, but to Ashe or any of the Blue Lions, that one stutter might as well have been her screaming.
Was...she thinking the same thing?
“Anyways, g-get well soon, professor!” Ashe said in a panic, quickly leaving the room.
As he left, both of them thought the same thing.
“...Holding their hand was nice.”

flame; manuela x f!byleth; rated t for cuddling
---
It was quiet now. Maneula had tapered off, the wine ushering her into a sleepy state. The gossip and anecdotes that started the night seemed so far away and now it was just the crackling fire in the fireplace and themselves. This is where it normally ends, Byleth helps her into bed and bids her farewell and she falls into a deep, dreamless sleep and wakes up with an awful headache.
But it was different tonight. Byleth sat closer to her than she had on other nights, both of them slouched on the too-squishy couch, Manuela eventually sliding her head into her colleague’s lap. She had never felt more safe with someone. She had never felt such a closeness with someone. If only you were a man. Those words kept replaying in her head. Such a strange thing to say. But she was speaking from her heart at the time, because she knew that if Byleth were a man, she would be all over her. Perhaps she would’ve even chased her away by now…
She felt a hand touch her hair lightly, then with bolder intentions, carding fingers through her light brown locks. Manuela closed her eyes, feeling a sudden rush of emotions stuck in her throat, threatening to spill into tears. It had been a while, but she knew love when she felt it, bleeding through the fingertips that slowly traced the curve of her bob, that whispered down her neck, and grazed against her ear. And she knew love when she felt it, touching someone, trusting them enough to lay against them, to feel them shift so softly, so minutely that they don’t disturb you because they love you. And she knew love when she felt it because she felt safe enough to let the emotion go, to let it leave her in little huffs, muffled by the thighs she lay upon, her own hands curled up by her mouth, occasionally wiping away tears and snot when they became too much.
And when all was quiet again, it was still just them and the fire, still burning, still crackling, still alive.
When she was ready to confront the stillness, she didn’t move, she didn’t want to look Byleth in the eye, afraid of what she might find there even after everything. But she spoke, confident, though her voice was still shaky and rough, “It’s getting late. You probably want to head back to the dorms, right, professor?”
Byleth was as still as stone beneath her, her hand pausing at the base of her neck. “I don’t know,” she said eventually, the indecisiveness not like her. Manuela smiled sadly. “I don’t want to leave. But if you want me to go, I’ll go.”
“Don’t want girls’ night to end, hm?” She tried to play it off, unsure if she was ready to admit what just happened and why. She was confused and tired and not entirely sober, perhaps she’d wake up tomorrow and everything would just make sense.
Byleth chuckled. “Something like that.” Her hand moved from her neck to her shoulder and Maneula missed the heat and the weight and the caress. “I can go.”
Manuela finally picked herself up, twisting so she was face-to-face with her colleague, her friend, her… what did she want her to be? Who was Byleth to her? Some would say they were friends, and if they could see them now, they would say close friends. And maybe their students would agree with that, Claude and Edelgard swapping knowing glances but agreeing nonetheless. But she didn’t have many friends, and what friends she did have weren’t like this. They didn’t stay with her far into the night, long after normal friends would make excuses to leave, despite the falter in her self-medicated smile. Byleth wasn’t like anyone else. And she didn’t want her to be.
She felt her cheeks heat up, realizing she was getting closer to the answer. Still unsure but she could solve this problem so easily. It would only take seconds and all she would have to do is move forward slowly, staring up into sea-foam eyes, letting her lips brush up against hers. Just a test.
“Manuela.” She was still as stone, but so warm and close. No one had said her name like that in a long time, soft and begging for answers. “Tell me what you want me to do.”
“I don’t know,” the words tumbled out of her mouth. She’d never done this before. All she’s ever known is men want her and women want to be her. Everyone loves her for her voice, for her beauty, for her body. No one just wants her. Her flaws are too great to be ignored; she’s too much to be loved. “I don’t know.” She said it again, hoping the silence would bless her with an answer.
Byleth’s hand was on her cheek in a heartbeat and she wanted to cry all over again. She screwed her eyes shut, willing the tears away, holding Byleth’s hand to her face like a lifeline. She breathed in and out, in and out. The other woman’s thumb on her cheek rubbing little circles, letting her know this is okay. This is okay. This is patience. This is love. This is acceptance.
“Let’s go to bed,” Byleth whispered, slipping her arms around her shaking shoulders and under her bent knees. All she could do was nod, keeping her eyes closed she felt her body being lifted, her head falling onto strong shoulders. She smelled nice.
Byleth laid her down gently onto her unmade bed. Manuela caught her arm before she could move away, her eyes sliding open and up her arm to find a smile.
“Will you help me out of my robe?” A line she had used on many men before, but it didn’t share the same meaning here. She wanted her touch on her, the warmth of familiar hands someplace new. Byleth didn’t hesitate, pulling the tie holding it closed, trails of her fingertips igniting across her shoulders, pulling the sleeves off one at a time, leaving just her slip behind.
Sleep was pulling her head toward her pillow, her hands pulling the duvet over her bare legs and arms, but still she wanted warmth. A definitive answer could come later, but she knew she didn’t want Byleth to leave. “Will you stay the night?” Will you hold me? The real question.
Even in the dying light of the fire, Manuela could see the blush light up Byleth’s face. She looked surprised and then worried. “Are you sure?”
“Does the mess deter you?” The wine was wearing off and her insecurities were slipping in. She pressed the covers to her chin, wanting nothing more than to feel the safety she had felt on the couch, staring into the fire, fingers carding through her hair.
“Has it ever?” she asked with a laugh. “Nothing could deter me from you.”
It was her turn to laugh. “Nothing?” She wanted to believe it. She always did. Hundreds of failed relationships and she was still quick to hope that love could be unconditional.
Byleth just shook her head, already removing each intricate piece of jewelry and clothing she wore and piling them neatly on the couch. “Nothing.”
Manuela’s eyes were glued to her form, the way her arms moved to put up her hair, the way her scars would shine differently in the firelight, the way she stumbled around to get her lace stockings off her long legs. She still didn’t know what to make of this woman who wanted nothing more than to be near her. And she still didn’t know what she wanted for herself and her relationship with Byleth. But as her body slid underneath the covers and scooted closer to her, a hand snaking across her waist to lace their fingers together, she knew that she felt happy.

@jaskerart is responsible for depicting these two so spectacularly!
Biggest flaw in FE3H? FByleth can't S-Rank Manuela! The way she says "...and available~" no matter which Byleth you are? No way in hell is she straight!
So here's the story behind this one; Byleth falls head over heels for the Divine Songstress at first sight, Manuela is extremely fond of the Ashen Demon, but can't figure out why. Then, at some point in White Clouds, Byleth gives her a really sweet compliment and gets GLOMPED, leading to the pictured scene!

If you had to name a few (in your opinion) tiring takes in 3H for your faves, what would some of them be?
Centrist/Status Quo Dimitri will always pop in my mind, since apparently thinking "hey maybe don't start a war that'll inevitably hurt more than whoever you're warring against" means you want to uphold the same harmful systems.
Claude hates Rhea / would work with Ladlegard over the church and/or Dimitri is another take I've seen, and not only is it not true (cause Claude literally works with the church over Ladle in like, every route besides CF) it just shows that people didn't play Verdant Wind all the way through. People will continue to post the support up Claude gets when you insinuate that he'd be happy if Rhea was dead, but that was, y'know. Before he learned why she does what she does.
Honorary Eagle Lysithea, because let's be honest here. Just because a character has a support with a different house leader/route exclusive character, doesn't really mean they're an honorary member of that class. I can somewhat get it with the Ashen Wolves and Cyril, but would Ingrid and Annie really be honorary Deer, for example? Not to mention that Lysithea literally fucking hates the empire for what it did to her family, sooo. For me, her being an honorary Black Eagle feels extremely ignorant of her character.
"Characters are only queer if they S support same-gender Byleth" is a take I don't like much. I don't fuss over it often, cuz let's be real. Having a queer S support does do wonders for the amount of queer fic and praise among the FE community, and it has to lead to more overtly queer characters as the games have gone on. But I can't look at stuff like Shamir/Catherine for example and see anything other than Sapphic greatness, and neither of them having a F!Byleth S rank doesn't change that for me.
"Save Dedue from the Lions/Dimitri" for reasons I've talked about before. Ah yes, let's save him from the only person who's ever treated him like an equal human being, worthy of love and respect. That's fantastic. /s
Same with "X character who's not recruitable on CF should've been able to join Ladle", but especially with Flayn and Seteth. Like, if one were to claim that they played all routes and still think Flayn and Seteth should've abandoned Rhea for Byleth and Ladle, I would laugh at them.
"Yuri is what Claude should've been" has been getting on my nerves recently because it reminds me of the same shit with Camilla and every busty female after her, mostly with Sonya, Dorothea, and Manuela. No, X characters shouldn't have to have been like Y character, just say you prefer Y over X instead.

Which ship do you wish was more popular / had more content available?
One for the students, the faculty, & each Byleth letsgeddit !
Merciebert / Mercedes x Hubert 🤍🖤 this is such a rare pair but I love them sm!! Both of them start off living their lives for other people, selfless and barely considering their own wants so if they fall in love, it’ll hit them “I love you and want you to be happy & make your own choices- waaaiitttttt” lololol. By healing each other other, they heal themselves (“: Also, Hubert is Mercedes’s own walking talking ghost story ! She adores the macabre so all his dark musings that usually scares others off only endears her more to him ((“: & for Hubert, the person’s who’s committed many atrocities in the dark, Mercedes’s gentle healing hands would be a welcome retreat, and she is so forgiving. His personal angel <3333
Faculty, oh I gotta give it to my bestie Manuela who deserves all the love & happiness. MANUELA X RODRIGUE He’s a widow I think?? She’s a strong woman who deserves to be adored and he has nothing but time and patience and royalties to lavish her with~ oh, and the idea of Manuela being Felix’s new step mommy is the most hilarious concept to exist.
I need more F!Byleth and Balthus everything! There’s a maybe a total of 15 pieces of fanart and he’s ranked the 5th lowest on the ao3 fanfic list like WHAT IS WITH YOU PEOPLE DO YALL NOT HAVE EYES TO SEE HIS GLORIOUS LONG LOCKS AND INSANE BODY + EARS TO HEAR HIS HILARIOUS JOKES?!? She’s from a rough & tough mercenary upbringing & he gave up nobility to live free on the road, they are soooo compatible & would live such a rich & interesting life traveling the world <333 PLUS HE’S SO FINE LIKE ARE YALL BLI-
M!Byleth x Hapi I just adore Hapi and want to s-support her in all forms, plus I love how she nicknames Byleth “Chatterbox” he deserves someone who is chill w/ him & doesn’t lick the ground he walks on. Plus SHE’S SO FINE ARE YALL BLI-
thank you very much for sending this ask :D

the amount of stuff that sits between storyline bits is kind of frustrating to me, but i bet on a replay it’s not so bad since you’d probably just charge in automating and skipping to dates that matter.
