i think i finally understand the exact reasoning behind how both will and mike's sexualities are presented, and how those presentations flatter each other.

will is barely queercoded from a subtextual perspective because there's no need to queercode him. the writers verbally establish in season one episode one that people percieve this kid as gay, so you're immediately guided to see him through the same lens, at least subconsciously. people continue to refer to him as gay and he continues to "act" gay, and most of the audience is able to see this for what it is very easily without the need for heavy symbolism. will being gay is simply treated as a fact from the start by both the characters around him and the writers themselves, for better or for worse.

MIKE, on the other hand, is so heavily queercoded it's barely even funny. he's the one with the queer imagery, the blocking, the set design, the lighting. he's never explicitly referred to as queer, it isn't so much as suggested verbally, but the sheer amount of incredibly blatant subtextual material that surrounds him is insane. none of the characters within the show have the slightest clue that mike is gay. there's a good chance that mike himself doesn't know, or has only begun to realize very recently. even the writers do their damn best to make it appear like they themselves don't know. still, the fact remains that he is, it just isn't expressed in a way that the homophobic masses both within and outside the show are capable of picking up on. when he comes out it will be a shock to the characters and the majority heterosexual audience, but not to the queer people who pick up instinctually on the signalling. basically, you only know mike is gay if you have a genuinely functioning gaydar.

in this way they're so strongly representative of two very different gay experiences, both of which are important and both of which are treated respectfully by the writers, despite the setting.

will is the kid who never really gets the luxury of choosing whether to come out to people, because everybody has had him pegged from the start. even his own family: jonathan tells will he accepts him before will can even hint toward the topic himself. however as much as we're told that he "seems" gay to other people, all we are shown subtextually is a totally normal child who happens to have feelings for another boy. this is important because it subverts the trope of making "being gay" the "obviously gay" character's sole or core trait.

mike is the kid who people would never in a million years guess was queer. it's not just that he gets the luxury of choosing when to come out of the closet; he's so deep in it that he's drowning in winter coats. he's the "twist queer character," except he's not. his subtextual queercoding has been there beneath the surface for just as long as will has been textually referred to as queer on a surface level. this makes it clear that him being gay isn't some kind of last minute decision and the subtlety of his presentation wasn't an accident. if you don't knkw mike is gay now before it's revealed then you aren't supposed to.

they're foils like that. they're the archetypal queers, and i think it's kind of beautiful.

(and if anybody tries to argue that one expression of Queer Experience is more important than another then i'm coming for their kneecaps. having both experiences not only represented but thoroughly explored is so rare, although there are people all over the world who resonate with each.)

It’s hard enough to overcome their own personalities (and sukunas annoying internal monologue) to get together. But the second they have the worlds most repressed movie + coffee date with a very confused Kugisaki riding third wheel the Zenin want yuuji fucking dead. People keep trying to get megumi to date his aunt instead so they can produce children. His aunt is a mean lesbian. He does not want to date his aunt. He super doesn’t want kids with her. He wants to date this kind himbo who is Strong and Fast. Legitimately yuuji ends up with a bounty on him on one of those sorcerer assassin websites, but the bounty is so low that it offends Sukuna on a profound level, who feels he specifically is worth more. Not yuuji obviously. Fuck that kid. But he’s a package deal and he’s worth so much fucking more.

People really think when you talk about lesbians being men or having relationships with men means you want them personally to go sleep with every man and not that you want every lesbian to have their own autonomy to decide what lesbianism means to them personally.

Like literally, the people who make large ass call out posts or posts that whine that there are people who are mspec lesbians or lesbian men or just that some lesbians have sex with men always make it so personal no matter if they are a lesbian or not. They seem to not be able to remove themselves from someone else's lesbianism and autonomy.

No one (seriously, no one besides actual lesbophobes) are claiming that you, a lesbian, has to have any relation to men. You do not have to date or have sex with lesbian men (or mspec lesbians), and guess what! We don't want to do those things with you either. No one is saying that because a small percentage of lesbians might have sex with men and/or be attracted to men, you as a lesbian have to. I don't know why you decided that you have to live in a world with communal absolutes. Not all lesbians are you, and you are not all lesbians (like really do you like the same women as every other lesbian? No, because you aren't other lesbians). Let lesbians have autonomy. Let lesbians live. Let queer people be!

Tldr: you don't have to do what other lesbians do. Just because a lesbian has any kind of relationship with men doesn't mean you have to. Other lesbians existing do not negate your lesbianism.

i love that lae'zel's character arc is about her learning to question the repressive ideals of her society and finding an appreciation for beauty and tenderness and a desire for independence after only thinking of herself as a soldier for her whole life BUT she remains an abrasive autistic weirdo who loves to hit things until they die. literally perfect no notes. she's my wife your honor

been very slowly going through the phryne fisher novels (on blood and circuses rn) and its reminded me of one of the episodes in season 2 of the tv adaptation (i think? maybe season 3) where the plot revolved around university students at a Melbourne college abd the murder of a professor, and one of the main characters who is briefly posited as a murder suspect is an autistic woman working as a student helper to the professor (its not like. explicitly said bcos the show is set in the 1930s) and its somehow... one of the more accurate and sensitive depictions of an autistic person ive seen in tv media? shes shown to be stand-offish and awkward and uncomfortable in social situations and the character that torments her about this is very clearly The Bad Person And Asshole. When questioning her about the murder Phryne actively finda a way to talk to her in a way shes comfortable with (both nose to nose against a wall, some distance from one another, not making eye contact, speaking quietly because this entire situation has pretty much sent her into a meltdown ). when they realize shes at risk of being harmed phryne has her stay at her home. shes shown to be incredibly passionate about her area of study in the university (a bit of it plays into the savant stereotype which is one of the few issues prevalent in media about autistic people like the good doctor, etc, but uts not presented as like "oh shes autistic BUT shes really smart about this thing and basically a superhero so its okay") shes shown to have specific dietary requirements shes adamant about (jam sandwiches only.) and the other characters are like "oh! weird. actually, thats not my business. let me grab you one." and she develops a really lovely friendship with phryne that ties into the whole plot and motive for the murder (another professor killing the murdered professor so he can prevent information which disprove his biological and sociological research which is based entirely on eugenics and psuedoscience, which the murder victim found disgusting and didnt want taught when his assistants existence literally disproved that bullshit) and i don't know how to finish this i guess i wasnt expecting a genuine attempt at properly representing autistic people in this show about murders in the 1930s
