On a reptile rescue page, I saw that they didn't allow adoptions to folks who use screen-topped cages. They cited heat and humidity loss for the reasons, and I was curious about your thoughts on it. I haven't seen this topic brought up much, and there's just so much conflicting information out there on reptile care.

As an aside, what enclosure(s) do you use? I have Exoterra right now but I'm probably going to switch to PVC when I can (but man, that upfront cost is something!)

That's something I've never seen before! I usually advise against screen-top enclosures for those reasons if you're a beginner, but they're perfectly workable. They're fine for low-humidity snakes and if you know what you're doing you can keep any snake in one with no issues. In most cases literally all you really have to do is cover most of the screen with something like a plywood sheet or even just cardboard and be sure to monitor perimeters very closely.

Most of my enclosures are either custom-built PVC I've bought from local hobbyists at expos or old donated fish tanks that have been repurposed! I strongly prefer PVC but there's really nothing wrong with a repurposed fish tank if it's what you have and you know what you're doing. I have a couple Exoterras too and I don't mind them one bit for smaller snakes! What style of enclosure I pick for an individual snake depends on their species and their individual needs, but in general PVC is a super solid bet. Check out Animal Plastics and your local reptile expo for more affordable PVC enclosures!

Sigma's new enclosure is finished!

well, mostly. I want to get another branch or tube or plant or something in that top right corner to fill in the empty space, assuming the monster dracaena doesn't realize it now has an extra foot of vertical space and decide to conquer it. i'll give it a month or two and see how the dracaena adapts before putting something above it. I also want to see how the new pothos grows in, and how the old philodendron adapts. i actually removed two vines from the philo and cut the remaining two down to size a bit since they took over whatever space the dracaena didn't in the old enclosure, so i'm confident the philodendron will help fill in some of the currently empty space even if the dracaena and pothos decide not to.

for the enclosure itself, it's a Leap Habitats 22"x17"x36" enclosure and hoo boy it has its pros and cons... mostly cons. i haven't seen many reviews for these enclosures that aren't from popular youtubers or reddit threads from over a year ago, so here's my opinions below:

i've moved several times so i greatly appreciate how light the enclosure is even fully planted, and being able to screw branches and tubes and other things into the walls instead of having to use spray foam (and then either silicone or the grout method) to mount them is really nice. both are pluses over the glass exoterra 18"x18"x24" Sig has called home since he was given to me. i loved that enclosure but after moving three times with it (once before i made it bioactive) i was not a fan of the weight.

this doesn't apply to me right now, but i do see it as a plus that they included the little spots in the corners of the top that you can pop out to easily install mister nozzles through. i don't know if these holes fit non-Leap misting systems without modification, but it's certainly simpler than some of the setups i've seen for getting misters installed in traditional enclosures like exoterras.

Sigma is... not a great hunter. his method of hunting black soldier flies, for example, is to slam his face as hard as possible into them. this is another big reason i wanted him out of the glass enclosure-- i'm genuinely worried about him injuring himself with the force at which i've watched him bounce his face off the walls and door of the exoterra enclosure. so the softer, less rigid walls and acrylic door are a plus for that alone.

now for the downsides...

i'm really not a huge fan of how flimsy the acrylic door is. if it was a liiiittle thicker i'd probably like it more. the very simple method for the door hinge also means that when open, the door is misaligned, so i have to remember to slightly lift it when i go to close it so it will fit back in its space and close properly. this could be related to the low quality control that i've heard other people report regarding Leap (and experienced myself further below)

the base also leaks. they do sell external water catch trays in case of leakage, but i feel like they should come with the trays instead of the tray being optional, since the design of these things is basically guaranteed to leak without modification.

i didn't encounter this myself because i'd already seen warnings about this and didn't bother trying, but silicone and expanding foam won't adhere to the sides without help. Leap recommends using wall anchors for the foam to hold onto, but there's no real solution for silicone. this is annoying, because being able to seal the damned thing with silicone would GREATLY help the above leaking problem because you could just silicone around the rivets and internal plastic liner so that the leaking wouldn't be an issue. sealants that do bond to polypropylene don't strike me as being safe for use inside a reptile enclosure, especially a bioactive one.

it was also a BITCH to put together. i sort of expected this because a couple reviews i read before buying stated that the quality control is not the best. Leap has several videos on their youtube showcasing how to assemble the enclosures straight out of the box, and the provided instructions in the box are simple enough to follow, but i had to make some minor modifications in order to get the enclosure together due to ill-fitting pieces (for example, the screen top, which also keeps the walls in shape, did not actually fit on top of the walls like it was supposed to and i had to pry some sections open wide enough to actually get the damned thing in place). the alignment pin that goes in the front right of the base also did not want to be flush with the base like it's supposed to be.

all that being said, right now i would still be willing to get another, smaller Leap enclosure in the future for my mourning geckos or another gecko species. whether i actually do get another of their enclosures will really depend on how this one for Sig holds up. the lightness and ease of customization were the entire reasons i ordered this enclosure instead of a similarly sized (24x"18"x36") glass one, so we'll eventually see if that's truly worth the troubleshooting and outright downsides to these enclosures or not.

Hoje eu quero abordar aqui sobre a relação de mãe e filha que elas têm. Bom, Sindel é a imperatriz da Exoterra, consequentemente teve muita pressão em cima dela para ter herdeiros de Jerrod. Afinal, quantos inimigos a Exoterra não tem, né? Então, a qualquer momento ela ou o Jerrod poderiam ir de xereca.

Creio que Sindel não se arrepende de ter tido as gêmeas, mas não gostou nada da ideia de ter sua vida íntima sob pressão da corte imperial.

Bom, voltando a pauta. Mileena muitas vezes é repreendida por Sindel, por cada mínimo erro. Eu acho, que Sindel gostaria que Mileena fosse mais madura e tivesse uma cabeça mais firme para a coisas, já que muitas vezes ela é imprudente. Ao meu ponto de vista, Sindel não quer que ela sofra com a opressão da corte com uma cabeça tão fraca. Talvez Sindel se veja em Mileena como alguém que ela foi antes de se tornar uma imperatriz e uma mãe, apesar de favorecer Kitana e desejar que ela fosse a primogênita (talvez por Kitana ser mais madura e ter uma mente mais forte).

Mas antes de imperatriz e governante, Sindel a cima de tudo é uma mãe e uma esposa. A morte de Jerrod a abalou de tal maneira, que ela se viu forçada a completar todos os papéis em que tinha a ajuda de Jerrod, mas agora, sem ele ao seu lado para ajudá-la e amá-la. Ela teve que ser uma mãe; um pai, uma imperatriz, uma pacificadora, burocrata e muito mais...

Apesar de repreender Mileena por sair sozinha do palácio e por ter ido à lugares perigosos, possivelmente sido atacada (levando em conta sua cicatriz na sobrancelha) e ainda por cima ter contraído uma doença que é fatal e que deixa as pessoas muito debilitadas. Imagine o desespero de sua filha (E herdeira) ter contraído uma doença que pode ter três resultados: matá-la, fazer ela atacar e matar alguém e/ou deixá-la completamente fraca até que ela morra.

Sindel no ato desesperado de salvar sua filha, abriu brechas emocionais para Shang Tsung se aproveitar de sua fraqueza e desespero para conseguir ingredientes e recursos poderosos para experimentos nojentos.

Shang Tsung deu a Sindel esperança para salvar sua filha. Podemos ver no rosto de Sindel que ela sente culpa por não ter notado sua filha saindo escondida e por ser impotente quanto a doença da filha. Ela queria ter impedido Mileena de ficar doente, e por isso, Sindel restringiu ao máximo as atividades que seriam perigosas para esgotar Mileena e dar gatilho a transformação tarkatânea assassina.

Eu acho que Sindel, Kitana, Tanya, Rain e Shao estavam presentes quando Mileena se transformou pela primeira vez, e que juntos conseguiram imobilizar ela sem machucá-la.

Outra prova da preocupação de Sindel com Mileena, é no banquete dos competidores, onde ela fixa sua atenção em Mileena e como seu corpo estava se comportando ao receber comida normal (Acho que tarkatâneos só comem carne crua, e por isso faria sentido que a comida feita faria mal a eles ou sla). Ela foi rápida em solicitar a presença das filhas para questionar Mileena antes que algo acontecesse.

Também podemos ver outra prova de seu amor e cuidado quando Li mei e Liu kang vão até a sala do trono com Tanya e as Umgadi. Onde Sindel não se importa de Kitana ir lutar, já que ela era perfeitamente saudável e resistente. Mas tenta ao máximo impedir Mileena de lutar.

Quando Mileena é derrubada por Li mei, podemos ver Sindel nitidamente preparada para correr em auxílio da filha. E mesmo sendo atacada e quase mordida no rosto e sufocada por Mileena, quando ela se acalmou e começou a sofrer sentada no chão, Sindel foi a primeira a se aproximar e oferecer mãos amigas a filha, não demonstrando nenhum medo por sua forma tarkatânea, apenas preocupação.

E o que dizer sobre a cena que todos nós estávamos esperando? Exato! A cena do abraço em família. É possível ver Sindel correndo primeiro na direção de Mileena para abraçá-la (mas estendendo os braços para as duas filhas), talvez ela estivesse preocupada com os efeitos que o amuleto desconhecido poderia ter causado na filha. Ela também inclinando a cabeça para o lado de Mileena indica nitidamente um alívio da parte dela.

E a cena final delas, gente?😭 Sindel lutando para viver enquanto Mileena lutava com a Dark Sindel. Ela querendo viver para dizer suas últimas palavras para sua filha que seria a nova imperatriz de seu reino. E o rosto de Mileena quando percebeu que sua mãe havia morrido antes que ela terminasse de responder ao último desejo dela😭💔.

Mileena tentou seu melhor para orgulhar a mãe e provar que seria uma boa imperatriz, talvez pelo medo da rejeição ou de ser substituída pela irmã. Quando imperatriz, tentou seguir os passos da mãe e melhorar aquilo que as crenças e preconceitos de Sindel não a deixavam melhorar.

hi!! i've been researching gargoyle geckos and am thinking of getting one in a few months :) do you have any tips or opinions on keeping one?

Omg so gargoyles are amazing little guys and definitely underrated imo!

They're quite easy to keep really, Lichen is quite chilled out in his enclosure and usually he's just vibing. Most of the more advanced, science-based keeping guides for crested geckos will basically work for a gargoyle too! The care is pretty much identical - the only difference we've noticed is that Lichen has always loved bugs but cresties are hit and miss with them.

Gargoyles are less jumpy typically but will run and can be very skittish, but you learn their behaviours and body language and that helps. Plus if they get startled enough to drop their tail at least it will grow back!

General key requirements

45x45x60cm enclosure minimum for an adult (exoterra and habistat are our faves). Arboreal enclosures or any enclosure with a lot of height is good!

UVB is required, to have a healthy gecko. Lichen uses his UVB daily and has done since he came to us (about 6-8 months old). Give lots of cover so that they can cryptic bask if they don't want to full body bask.

Heat gradients are helpful but make sure temps don't go above 27°C as much as possible, maybe 28 at a push. Gargoyles, like cresties, are sensitive to heat and too high can be fatal. 21-24°C at the bottom is usually good.

Humidity should be 60-80% but it's okay to sometimes let it drop to as low as 40% as long as it isn't for long periods. A natural fluctuation of humidity helps them shed better!

Bioactive is super good with all new caledonian geckos if you feel confident with it, lots of good tropical plants that are reptile safe and they thrive in the humidity needed. Of course not necessary but make sure to clean out the enclosure every 1-2 months if you don't have a cleanup crew and live plants. Reptile carpet should be avoided at all costs (for all reptiles, not just gargoyles)

Good option for food is Pangea if it's available, it's got amazing balanced nutrition! Repashy is probably the next best that I know of. You should have 3-4 flavours to alternate between. Every 3rd or 4th feeding you should offer live insects to offer them better nutrition. Some don't like bugs and in that case make sure that at least half of the foods have insects in them.

Lots of clutter! Make sure to have a mix of branches, plants (live and/or fake) and hides for them to hide in and climb. Having some horizontal spaces is necessary otherwise it can result in floppy tail which can be damaging to your scale baby (applies to all arboreal lizards).

Exoterra makes great cat beds

This little snot has a Universal Rocks background and two ledge kits coming his way.

I've had an exoterra 36x18 sitting in a closet for...half a year, I think, all for him, but I've been lazy in deciding how to decorate it. The sticker shock of discussing a custom background with a creator on Etsy made UR much more palatable 🤣.

To be clear, I am not disparaging ANYONE'S hard work. I am in no way creative, and that is why I have to outsource these things. But I just can't afford to pay what would buy me two 4x2 PVC cages for just one background, especially for a 36x18 enclosure.

(also Mesa has not calmed down any since I moved him to the new room. I went to water his plants yesterday, and the little turd spent all of that time biting me 🙄)

Used two exoterras to double the space of the crabs have as well as did a 30% substrate change since the old one was getting really crusty. The water and food will also be elevated onto the second floor to make cleaning easier. The coconut mat is new and hopefully won’t deteriorate, but it’ll give them more space to climb. One of the heaters is on timer now too, so it’ll get up into the upper 80 degrees in the morning in the hottest spots, and low 80s/ high 70s at night. I intend to add more foliage and decor soon, but the budget ran short ^^;

Also removed all bottom feeders, including the isopod population. I’ll consider adding pillbugs in the future since I really appreciated the cleaners, but atm, they were a nightmare to manage 🤧

Ive had these crabs for over ten years, so happy to finally give them another upgrade to their home
