“Ex-Service Men To Have Dinner,” Ottawa Journal. December 23, 1930. Page 13. ---- Unemployed Single Veterans to Dine at Trafalgar House Christmas Night. ---- All single unemployed ex-service men are assured of a dinner Christmas night as a result of the work of the Canadian Legion. They will dine at Trafalgar House at 6 o'clock and the repast to be served is to be followed by an entertainment, full details of which are not yet available. Tickets for the dinner are obtainable at "The Shelter,” Wellington and Lyon streets at 7 o'clock this evening. Through the courtesy of three uptown theatres, tickets are to be provided to ex-service men enabling them to view one show this week and a local miniature golf course is placing its course at their disposal for a round of the Royal and Ancient.
At a meeting of the executive of the Canadian Legion held last night it was announced that the hospital committee under the chairmanship of W. T. Barnes would visit every hospital in the district Christmas Day.
On New Year's Day, the ex-service men are due to fare equally well as they are being given a dinner at "The Shelter" at 6 o'clock by The Salvation Army.
That the ex-service men are imbued with a desire to play the game was strikingly illustrated yesterday when the Legion received $10 from a veteran who came to Ottawa a short time ago to get his pension adjusted. He was absolutely without means or work and was taken under the wing of the Legion at "The Shelter." Happily his pension was speedily adjusted and he secured a position. He lost little time in giving tangible expression to his gratitude in the form of a cheque to help his less fortunate comrades.
Another veteran who also has been a guest at “The Shelter," and who has secured work which promises to develop into a permanent position in a letter to officials of the Canadian Legion states that he attributes his present fortunate position to the kindness shown by the organization over a difficult period.

“The context of that book – originally – was the emergence of what a number of us had begun to call a new racism.[17] By calling it a new racism we were drawing attention to the fact that it was strongly culturalist in character, and that it articulated nationalism and racism very tightly together. Now, at that time – I don’t know if this has changed completely – but thirty years ago, it was very conventional to say that nationalism belongs to one area of scholarship and racism belongs … if it belonged to any … if it belongs at all to scholarship, it went somewhere else – either to psychology with the trope of prejudice or towards psychosocial studies. If it was recognised as being interesting, and usually racism wasn’t considered interesting at all. But wherever it was, it was not connected to the academic study of nationalism. This separation was there, for example in Benedict Anderson’s very influential book (Anderson, 2004). He tries to separate the two things out very sharply, and I suppose I felt that the starting point for any critique of the racism that I was most familiar with was a very close connection with nationalism. That association was accomplished through a particular sense of what culture could be, which had acquired all the force of an earlier biologically-orientated racism. But the new racism didn’t announce itself as a biological racism. It made culture into the favoured battleground. It made culture something we had to quarrel with. We had to offer a better understanding of culture. We had an opportunity I suppose – coming out of a Cultural Studies conversation – to make a better theory of culture than the one that saw culture distributed in national buckets so that you were either in the bucket of your exclusive national culture, or somewhere else in some other bucket somewhere. We had a chance to show how culture moved, how it lived, how it reproduced, to understand its organicity, its fluidity, plasticity, mutability: the conflict that it hosted. We need not be defeated by what my friend Ulrich Beck used to call a ‘methodological nationalism’[18] as well as a political nationalism. As a result, we had to update our understanding of how to combat racism in the field of ideas: in our disciplines, in our institutions, in our universities. We could only do this if we saw the new variety of racism that was strongly cultural in character – so cultural, so different supposedly – from a biological racism that it could hold up its hands and plead that it wasn’t racism at all. So, to try and show that, to show the history of how that had happened, that was the aim, the principal aim of that book. I'm very flattered that it is still something people find useful. Like many people I can’t re-read my own work. Most of the time, I can’t even remember what is in them, but I do remember that’s in there. I do remember that that is in there somewhere, there is an argument about nation and race and culture, that was very important to me, and … obviously, some people like the title of this book. They always liked it: There ain’t no black in the Union Jack. In a sense … the original edition had a photograph, a beautiful photograph taken by Jane Bown, of an older ‘Windrush generation’ man who had been in the army of the British in World War II, and he is standing at the Cenotaph at the ceremony held each year to remember the glorious dead who fell in battle. He is proudly holding a regimental banner, or, the banner of the West Indian Ex-Servicemen and Women’s Association. His chest is pinned with medals. I know that the left is a bit bad with irony sometimes, but the point is that combination of title and image was to suggest an ironic relationship between the ‘black’ and the ‘Union Jack’. It was an old racist chant heard at cricket matches in Yorkshire and Lancashire.”

London office worker became royalty after marrying Middle Eastern king
Antoinette Avril Gardiner, known as “Toni”, was born in 1941 in the village of Chelmondiston in Suffolk, before coming an unlikely - and mostly unknown - royal princess
By Kate Buck, News Reporter, Ertan Karpazli, 16:05, 15 Sep 2021
Britain has a widely unknown royal princess - a London office worker who wooed the King of Jordan.
Antoinette Avril Gardiner, known as “Toni”, was born in 1941 in the village of Chelmondiston in Suffolk, to Lieutenant Colonel Walter Gardiner, who was in the British Army and based abroad in Malaysia.
She attended Bourne School in Kuala Lumpur, where it is said she excelled at field hockey, but her school was shut down when Britain decided to close down its offices in the country, and her family were sent back to the UK.
Aged 19, she accompanied her father to his new station in Jordan where she quickly landed herself a job at Jordan Radio before taking on a secretarial role at a film production company called Horizon.
The Horizon team were in Jordan to shoot what would later become a Hollywood all-time classic, Lawrence of Arabia.
As part of the movie, Jordan’s King Hussein gave permission for some Jordanian servicemen to take up roles as extras.
He would regularly attend the set to check up on how his soldiers were doing.
On one occasion, the film crew threw a fancy-dress party, which the king attended dressed as a pirate.
It was there that Toni saw him and said the words that won his heart. “It makes you look rather scruffy, Your Majesty,” she said with a cheeky smile.
The king had actually just come out of a divorce from his ex-wife, Queen Dina, and was said to be feeling terribly lonely and was looking for love.
King Hussein was also a keen Anglophile, so he naturally fell in love with Toni as soon as he laid eyes on her.
Regarding his first meeting with his wife-to-be, the king later wrote: “For the first time in my life, here was a girl who took an interest in me as a human being and not as a King.”
The couple were soon wed, and Toni changed her name to Princess Muna al-Hussein.
Many speculate that the name change came as part of her conversion to Islam.
After all, it was unconstitutional at the time for the king of Jordan to marry a non-Muslim woman. Others, however, believe that she didn’t change her religion, hence the reason for her only taking the title of Princess rather than Queen.
To this day, her religious affiliation is somewhat ambiguous.
The young English bride bore four children for the king, the first being Abdullah in 1962, then Faisal in 1963, and finally she gave birth to twins Aisha and Zein.
As the eldest of King Hussein’s sons, Abdullah was granted the title of Crown Prince and eventually became the new king of Jordan upon his father’s passing.
King Abdullah II, being half English and having received his education in Sandhurst, always struggled with Arabic and spoke English as his first language. He is therefore often referred to today as the “English king from the desert”.
But things weren’t always so easy for Toni a.k.a. Muna.
Her son Abdullah was briefly stripped of his Crown Prince title due to instability in the country.
According to the Jordanian constitution, the country’s ruling monarch must be born to Muslim parents.
With doubts about his mother’s conversion still lingering, King Faisal tweaked the constitution in order to allow him to name his younger brother Hassan as his heir. This decision was later changed again to allow Abdullah to reclaim his title.
Princess Muna (Toni) also had to endure a bitter divorce from her husband of 10 years in 1971 after he decided to marry again while still being wed to her.
However, King Hussein amicably allowed her to keep her royal title while relieving her from many of the responsibilities associated with it.
At that point, she had the choice of returning to the UK, but she chose to stay in Jordan and be close to her children.
In later years, she had to heed off an attempt by another wife of the king, American-born Lisa Halaby, who pressed King Hussein to name her son Hamzah as Crown Prince.
Unlike Abdullah’s mother, Hamzah’s mother’s conversion to Islam is not in doubt, and she goes by the name Queen Noor. But eventually, it was Abdullah who was crowned king, and by the time of his wedding to Queen Rania in 1993, Muna and Noor had apparently resolved their differences.
Nowadays, even at the age of 80, Princess Muna can be found pursuing her passion of nursing in the Middle East.
She founded the Princess Muna College of Nursing and Allied Health Professions and the Princess Muna Scholarship Fund for Nursing.
She has also been the President of the Jordanian Nursing Council and the Vice-President of the Royal College of Nursing. (Source: The Mirror UK)

Eventful 2022 in Supreme Court: Many Key issues answered and landmark judgments delivered
Introduction
Apart from the collegium rift between the Central Government and the Supreme Court, the year 2022 was a remarkable one. Although 2022 witnessed three different CJIs, N.V. Ramana, U.U. Lalit, and now D.Y. Chandrachud, Landmark decisions were given to guarantee and protect citizens’ rights and liberties.
For the first time in the history of the Supreme Court, the current CJI is son of a former CJI. His father, Y.V. Chandrachud served as the 16th Chief Justice of India and holds the record of serving for the longest tenure (1978 to 1985).
In this article, a list of landmark judgments given by the Supreme Court every month in the year 2022 is discussed.
Daughter’s right to inherited property
January 20, 2022: Arunachala Gounder (Dead) by LRS vs Ponnusamy
The Supreme Court of India stated that the self-acquired property of a deceased Hindu male would be resolved by way of inheritance rather than survivorship as per the Hindu Succession Act, 1956. In Arunachala Gounder (Dead) by LRS vs Ponnusamy and Ors. case, the Apex Court allowed the appeal. After investigation, it has been identified that the property was the self-acquired property of Marappa Gounder. Hence, his sole daughter, Kupayee Ammal would inherit the property. In such property disputes where more than one daughter is left behind, the Court’s verdict is crucial.
The decision of SC on the minor child rape case
February 09, 2022: Pappu vs the State of Uttar Pradesh
While hearing the case, the Supreme Court partly accepted the decision of the High Court in which an appellant was accused of enticing a 7-year-old girl on the pretext of picking lychee fruit. The appellant then committed rape resulting in death of the girl. He dragged the victim’s body to approximately a distance of one kilometer and dumped her near a bridge on a riverbank. The session judge convicted the appellant of the death sentence and was charged with the offences under Sections 302, 376, 201 IPC, and ¾ POCSO. This was further upheld by the HC stating that punishment of death is “Eminently desirable”. After this, the appellant approached the Supreme Court and the decision of the HC was partly accepted by changing death sentence to life imprisonment.
Supreme Court upheld the policy of OROP (One Rank One Pension) over ORMP (One Rank Multiple Pensions)
March 16, 2022: Indian Ex Servicemen Movement & Ors. vs Union of India & Ors.
The central government’s scheme of OROP for the armed forces was upheld by the bench of the SC. The scheme states that two individuals of same rank and same service years must get an equal pension when retiring from the military. Despite of same rank and service years, some military officers receive different pensions due to different reasons. The petitioners contended that separate classes among the military personnel were created by OROP based on length of service and rank. While hearing this case, the Chief Justice of India held that no constitutional infirmity was identified in the OROP principle in the pension scheme.
Changes in FCRA impacts the right to receive unregulated foreign funds
April 08, 2022: Noel Harper & Ors. vs Union of India & Anr.
While hearing Noel Harper & Ors. vs Union of India & Anr. case, the top Court disposed of the writ petitions. The provision namely Sections 7, 12(1A), 12A, and 17 of the 2010 Act were declared intra vires by the bench of the Supreme Court. Herein, the amendment introduced different changes to FCRA (Foreign Contributions Regulation Act) affecting NGOs as they were not able to receive foreign funds. The amendment was then challenged by Noel Harper who was the Chairman of the Jeevan Jyothi Charitable Trust and the Care & Share Charitable Trust. The Justices C.T. Ravikumar, Dinesh Maheshwari, and A.M. Khanwilkar held that the “Right to Association does not include the right to receive unregulated foreign funds”.
Government never mandated the Covid-19 vaccine says the SC
May 2, 2022: Jacob Puliyel vs. Union of India & Ors.
The Supreme Court of India on May 2, 2022 disposed of the writ petition filed by the petitioner describing the consequences of emergency approval of the Covid-19 vaccine, need for disclosure of clinical data and transparency in clinical trial data. The petitioner further filed an Interlocutory Application whereas the respondent objected to the maintainability of the writ petition. The Supreme Court stated that the government had never mandated the vaccine and also pointed out different issues of the petitioners.
Supreme Court’s decision on large scale criminal conspiracy
June 24, 2022: Zakia Ahsan Jafri vs State of Gujarat & Anr.
The top Court held no criticism of SIT’s (Special Investigation Team) approach and the decision was taken based on the investigation report by SIT. In this case, the deceased was killed and the case was presented before the High Court by the appellant which was dismissed. A special investigation team was found since the petitioners did not follow an appropriate procedure to file the complaint as well as the HC did not issue directions for FIR registration. The Gujarat Government objected stating undue delay in filing of FIR. During the investigation, SIT identified 30 allegations in the stated complaint including the instructions given by Shri Narendra D. Modi to give vent to Hindu anger (in the wake of Godhra incident) toward minority Muslims. After investigation, the SIT gave “clean chit” to the accused and the Supreme Court found that all the assertions of the appellant were false.
SC on unmarried women’s right to abortion
July 21, 2022: X... vs The Principal Secretary Health and Family Welfare Department & Anr.
The petitioner was allowed to terminate a pregnancy based on the proper interpretation of the statute and ensured that no benefit would be revoked on the ground that the petitioner is an unmarried woman, mentioned by the Supreme Court. In this case, an unmarried woman was in a consensual relationship and learned that she was pregnant for a term of 22 weeks. As her relationship failed, she wanted to terminate the pregnancy. Also, she stated that due to the absence of livelihood she would not be able to nurture the child properly. A writ petition was further presented before the Delhi High Court to allow her to abort. While addressing this case, Medical Termination of Pregnancy Rules 2003 was thoroughly considered.
Supreme Court on unreasonable fees demand by arbitrators
August 30, 2022: Oil and Natural gas Corporation Ltd. vs Afcons Gunanusa JV
While hearing this case, the Supreme Court held that arbitrators do not have the power to determine their fees by issuing enforceable orders. Also, the arbitrators cannot be their own judge against the parties. The parties can approach the Court to review the fees demanded by the arbitrators if they feel it to be unreasonable. In addition, the top Court illustrated that arbitrator’s fees should be fixed to avoid unnecessary conflicts and litigation.
Supreme Court on juvenile justice
September 12, 2022: Vinod Katara vs State of Uttar Pradesh
While hearing Vinod Katara vs State of Uttar Pradesh case, the Supreme Court stated that keeping children in an adult jail results in different types of liberty infringement. Petitioner was found guilty of murder by the Agra’s Session Court and sentenced him for life imprisonment. The Allahabad High Court, while hearing the public interest litigation ordered the JJB (Juvenile Justice Board) to check the prisoner’s age in the jail who claims to be a juvenile. On Medical examination, it was identified that the applicant was around 15-years-old. Therefore, the SC ordered the JJB to perform bone ossification test for confirming the age of the applicant so that proper actions could be taken.
Does wearing hijabs at school affect uniformity and discipline
October 13, 2022: Aishat Shifa vs The State of Karnataka
The bench of the Supreme Court including two judges Justice Hemant Gupta and Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia delivered a split judgment on the case of Aishat Shifa vs The State of Karnataka. The judgment was made on whether Muslim students shed their hijabs before entering their school gates. Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia said that asking a girl to take off her hijabs at the school gate is an invasion of their privacy and an attack on their dignity. Also, he addressed that there should be restriction on wearing hijabs in schools and colleges in Karnataka further stating that “wearing hijab is ultimately a matter of choice”. In his opposition, Justice Hemant Gupta said that “secularity means uniformity” and compiled that wearing uniforms is a reasonable restriction. This split decision of the judges results in presenting the case to a larger bench.
EWS reservation impacting the basic structure of Constitution
November 07, 2022: Janhit Abhiyan vs Union of India
In this case, threefold grounds were addressed which were the bases of the challenge to the 103rd Constitution Amendment. First was making special provisions based on economic criteria in education and employment. Second was excluding educationally and socially backward classes (SC, ST, OBCs) from the benefit of special provisions (EWS reservation). The last one was proving 10 % additional reservations resulting in a breach of 50% reservations. All these grounds result in unacceptable abrogation of the Equality code affecting the basic structure of the constitution. While hearing this case, split decisions were given by the bench of five SC Justices including CJI. Uday Umesh Lalit, J. Dinesh Maheshwari, J. S. Ravindra Bhat, J. Bela M. Trivedi and J. J.B. Pardiwala. The challenges raised to the 103rd Constitution Amendment fails due to the decision rendered by the majority of Justices.
Quashing of criminal complaint
December 16, 2022: Hasmukhlal D. Vora & Anr. Vs The State of Tamil Nadu
In this case, the appellant had filed an appeal against the judgment of the High Court where the appellant’s plea to quash the criminal complaint was dismissed. It has been said that the appellant had sold the bulk quantity of raw materials to various drug manufacturers by dividing it into different pack sizes. There was no stock found on the premise of appellant and the respondent did not have a proper explanation regarding the delay of more than 4 years between SCN, initial site inspection and complaint. After the investigation, the Supreme Court allowed the appeal by setting aside the impugned judgment passed by the HC. Also, stated that it’s the duty of the HC to perform proper investigation to prevent miscarriage of justice even though quashing of the criminal complaint was done in rarest of rare cases.

Real gangsters move in silence
Tumblr media
Aimal Wali Khan, great grandson of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, of the Awami National Party, openly said that former governor of KPK, present chief minister of KPK, three other ministers and former speaker of the national assembly are paying regular "bhatta" to the TTP for their safety. The situation is so dire that the TTP is indulging in extortion from top government functionaries. The TTP, on one hand, is holding dialogue with the Pakistan army after declaring ceasefire and on the other, spreading its tentacles in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) and carrying out targeted killings of its opponents. Not only the precarious condition of the economy, but the Pakistan army is also worried over its inability to tackle Baloch insurgency and the violent depredations of TTP with whom it is holding talks facilitated by Sirajuddin Haqqani, Interior Minister of the Taliban government. The US was also waiting for this opportunity, as it can now wean away Pakistan from Chinese stranglehold and once again use the country to neutralise threats emanating from Afghanistan. However, the Pakistan army can ill afford annoying the US and hence reinstalling Imran Khan is not an option. What worries the Pakistan army is that a large number of Imran's supporters are ex-servicemen and their family members from Punjab, the main catchment area of its recruitment. Now out of power, Imran Khan is turning out to be more dangerous both for the army and the US interests. The army needed the US support for bailout by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to avoid a default, getting out of the grey list of the Financial Action Task Force and assured military and intelligence assistance in dealing with the growing threat of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) as also keeping its powerful neighbour, India, at bay. Pakistan, having remained subservient to the strategic and economic interests of the US for decades, can ill afford angering the superpower. What compelled the army to throw out Imran Khan was the hostile statements and interviews he had given to the international media against the US policies in Afghanistan during the latter's withdrawal from there. Numerous social media accounts associated with Imran's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, have not only targeted the Pakistan army, but also lampooned its chief, Qamar Javed Bajwa (on extension till November 29 this year) and ISI chief Nadeem Anjum. In fact, first backing Imran and now Shehbaz, has irreparably dented the public image of the army. People are even not questioning him about his dismal performance when he was in power and his promise of a 'Naya Pakistan' that he made before the 2018 general elections. The economic distress is so grave that people have forgotten that even Imran Khan was raised in the nurseries of the army and the Inter-Services Intelligence. The response of the masses in favour of Imran Khan has baffled the army and his political opponents, who thought that once out of power, he would gradually fade away. There is no doubt that Imran Khan has successfully channelised the public anger and discontentment emanating from the dysfunctional economy, appalling inequalities, and political turmoil against his political opponents and their backers in the army. What emboldens Imran is the fact that the ever surging and animated crowds at his meetings are believing his narrative that the real reason for the present distress in the country is due to the army foisting "corrupt" politicians to subserve the US' strategic interests in the region. Revelling in the swelling crowds in public meetings, former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan is simultaneously taking on the army, the Shehbaz Sharif government, the Election Commission and the judiciary without fearing the possible consequences.

Defence ministry distances itself from ex-servicemen bodies

History
The business was founded post WWI in Melbourne as the Australian Watching Company and in Sydney as the Metropolitan Night Patrol Service to provide a cost effective after hours night watchmen and security patrol service. https://www.perthguardsandpatrols.com/During the 1950’s, many ex-servicemen joined the ranks, and the company soon opened in every capital city with selected regional locations, and although we now have a new name we have an enduring legacy.
A new head office was established in Melbourne named “Watching House”, and the company had many local businesses to protect each night. It was during these years that the business started to diversify and really expand its service and increase in size nationally. During the 1990’s the Australian Watching Company (later Wormald Security) and Metropolitan Security Services (owned by Mayne Nickless Ltd) were purchased by Chubb Security. After trading as Chubb Security for almost 20 years, the company divested itself off the security patrols, which were sold off and returned to being an Australian privately owned and operated company which today is known as Southern Cross Protection.
We now have the duty to carry forward the proud Australian tradition, founded by the original night watchmen. We chose Southern Cross Protection as our name because Australians have long associated the constellation with a sense of identity, comfort and place. Each night as the Southern Cross rises in the sky, our patrol officers continue the good work of protecting our customer’s assets and people just like they did 90 years ago.
Southern Cross Protection operates the largest, national security patrol network. A national footprint that is able to provide the local communities; businesses and people with a holistic, intelligent approach to security on a localised basis. https://www.perthguardsandpatrols.com/Our scale creates access for all local businesses to precision technologies and risk management expertise at an affordable price.
Whatever your security budget – Southern Cross Protection has an effective solution for you.

Whatever your security budget – Southern Cross Protection has an effective solution for you.

We recognise them for their work. Thank you to all of ours and other Security Officers protecting us.
