I just had a bit of a sad but sweet thought for the EWF campaign. My players are going to be headed to the hometown of my good friends Desire and Lucero soon and for some reason, my brain said Lucero has a pet of some kind that the party will meet. Originally I was thinking maybe a mount (a griffon had called to me) but a new thought just came to mind that I like a lot better. He's gonna have a sweet brown-tan tabby cat Tressym, and her name will be Maddie 🥰

Why We Came To Boogie. (An Introduction)

My name’s Austin Evenson. I’m 26, live in Los Angeles, and work in the music industry. While most think this means that I bleach my hair, wear off-whites, and listen to only Frank Ocean, I’m not that type of music industry (despite the off whites that my boss gave me as a two year anniversary gift for putting up with his shit).

We Came To Boogie began as a simple phrase that turned into a lifestyle motto. Back in Labor Day of 2018, my buddy Ack and I were at a bar and a disco song came on. I started moving my hips and arms like a toddler and he asked politely, “Evenson, what the fuck are you doing?”. I replied with a shit-eating grin on my phrase “I’m just hear to boogie.” Fast-forward to New Years 2019, our Montreal group was at a bar downtown and I started my toddler dance and one of the girls goes “are those actually your dance moves?”. Again, I confidently replied, “I’m just here to boogie.”

The word “boogie” is more than an adolescent-looking dance move. It’s a word that can be interpreted in a multitude of ways. At the end of the day to me, it’s just how I go about life. I suck at dancing, I hate dancing, but you bet your bell-fucking-bottoms that I can boogie.

I love music, it’s my passion. I also have a lot of opinions on music that may be unconventional. But I feel like the music media takes a lukewarm, uninteresting stance. It’s all fairies and pixie dust with the occasional controversial news article that every other publication/news site is covering. Instead of saying everything is rainbows and sunshine, I’m going to give my raw opinion. Let me write this loud and clear, I WILL NOT ALWAYS BE RIGHT. But, I will do my best.

This blog will be my unapologetic, unfiltered, entirely biased opinion on music and the music industry. The music industry is a funny place. It consists of a bunch of cultural wannabes that fell into the “popular” group in high school but were actually a bunch of C average fakes with the occasional rockstar here and there. People in the music industry forget the consumers that are actually listening to music. The frat guys in Boston playing Dartmouth on a Tuesday, the soccer mom driving her kids home in Indiana from soccer practice, the banker in Chicago who’s last concert was Hoodie Allen in 2011 during junior year, the yoga instructor in Raleigh, NC, who loves to play her favorite jams during class.

My taste wildly ranges. One day, I’m listening to Fisher’s BBC Radio 1 essential mix. The next day, I have Rich Girl Radio (playlist on Pandora/Spotify based off of Daryl Hall & John Oates) blasting D&O, Otis Redding, Billy Joel, Van Morrison, and that vibe (shout out Nolan for the introduction there). In January, I was trying to find a way to become Roddy Ricch’s campaign manager for his 2020 presidential campaign. I listen to dance, pop, hip hop, disco, classic rock, alternative music, indie music, frat rap, and even a little country. 

Someone once told me “good music is good music” which I couldn’t agree with more wholeheartedly.

I’m here to be that voice. I remember having to lives in college when it came to music: 1) my industry colleagues and 2) my friends. One was about 2 years behind the other and I’ll let you guess which one is which.

Enough blabbering, let’s get into ripping some music apart and jamming to some absolute heaters. Take it or leave it. These are my opinions. Let’s cause some mayhem, turn some heads, and....

Engineers Without Borders

I think just about everyone has heard of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières) but I’d never heard of Engineers Without Borders until reading Raptim’s article, “Focus on NGOs: 45 Organizations That Battle Poverty.”

When Googling, I was confused to not find one primary EWB/ISF (Ingénieurs Sans Frontières) with possible country offices or affiliates.  According to ever-trusty Wikipedia, EWF is actually a common name used by many independent NGOs who use engineering for international development:

Many EWB national groups are developed independently from each other, and so they are not all formally affiliated with each other, and their level of collaboration and organizational development varies. The majority of the EWB/ISF (French, Ingénieurs Sans Frontières) organizations are strongly linked to academia and to students, with many of them being student-led.

According to Wikipedia, the first Ingénieurs Sans Frontières was founded in the 1980s in France, followed by Spain and Italy in the 1990s, then Canada and the UK.  There is an association of some of the EWBs - EWB International - which is based in the US with regional offices in Mexico, India, Denmark, and Egypt. 

The Engineers Without Borders recommended by the Raptim article was EWB-Canada, one of the largest EWB organizations. EWB-Canada was founded in 2000 with a mission to “unlock human potential”, which means investing in social enterprises in Sub-Saharan Africa, building a community of leaders at home in Canada, and collaborating across the globe to promote learning and “challenge the national and global policies, systems and institutions that contribute to the flawed status quo.”

Using a theory of change model, EWB-Canada describes its work in three parts:

Investing in people, which includes several fellowships, leadership development programs, conferences, networks/communities, and more;

Investing in ventures, which means investments in Sub-Saharan Africa’s high rates of social entrepreneurship; and 

Advocating for change through numerous programs on including various campaigns, training, and initiatives to “evolve” the engineering profession.

EWB-Canada has a lengthy roster of public and private partners.  Its site includes “showcases” of some of its best cases. According to is 2016 annual report, EWB-Canada had the following impact in 2016:

Only its most recent financial statement is available on its website, but previous financial was reviewed on Charity Intelligence Canada (what seems to be the Canadian equivalent of Charity Navigator).

D&D time!  Time for Vyce to go apeshit (insofar as a rogue is mechanically capable of going apeshit) on the incredibly terrifying monster that just wiped out a third of his sister’s HP!

Sometimes in D&D you just gotta trigger an encounter that you know is there. You'll be going down a trapped tunnel into a seemingly empty room that you can't see the ceiling of, with clear signs of recent activity and things that vanish as soon as you turn your back to them, and in those moments, you absolutely have to cause a ruckus and go for the encounter.

A sequence of events:

I give Vyce a cool big sister and decide to make her a successful gladiator

DM decides to build her out as a Level 12 fighter

DM, as a fighter player, is very good at building fighters

We meet a djinn in game who offers us all any item of our choice and Vyce decides to get his sister something to protect herself since he's worried people will go after her to get to him

Vyce gives Avarice a Legendary battleaxe

DM consistently rolls Nat 20 after Nat 20 when Avaris fights alongside us using this axe

The moral of this story is, selfless love for your siblings is the most powerful magic of all <3

Nothing so satisfying as when your DM pulls one over you like yesss, all the clues were there but we didn't suspect anything at all, you got us so good!

My goal for this campaign is to get the DM to spill as much of his lore document as possible. This is both a promise and a threat.

So. Uh. Vyce just died!

D&D time! Vyce has been caught in the middle of some ill-advised, unplanned home (lair?) invasion and is now gonna learn about Consequences(TM). Listen, are you even a rogue if you've never illicitly entered someone's home and snooped around?
