Skyrim takes place in an enigmatic fantasy world which is engulfed in a political conflict and suddenly an old prophesied threat emerges and is bent on destroying the world.

You take role of an unknown traveler who happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, but as events unfold. Turns out you are not an ordinary person, you are THE dragon born. The only thing that stands between the dragons and the destruction of Skyrim is you.

Skyrim has a lot of content, side quests and the story is deep. You can keep playing Skrym for hours and hours and get lost in a different dimension.

The last of Us

Naughty Dogs knows what it does. They are the masters of their craft when it comes to developing breathtaking narrative driven experiences. The sheer amount of attention to detail which was earlier observed in the Uncharted games successfully transcends into The Last Of Us.

Exclusive to the PS4, The Last Of Us puts you into the shoes of a man who has lost many things. The world has collapsed and strange mutants ravage the world. As the man of a family it is upto you to protect your loved ones from the perils of the new dangerous world.

The production quality of the game is what sets it apart. A dark and mature story backed by well choreographed cinematics, well acted characters and a blend of stealth horror action gameplay totally set this game apart from anything on this list.

You should get a PS4 only to play this game. Its that good!

Battlefield 1

This in my opinion is the best battlefield game in recent years, obviously there are other battlefield games and I was thinking of voting for BFBC2, this one won for many reasons.

BF1 is a fast paced action multiplayer experience with a solid punch of World War 1.

The originality and the attention to detail BF1 offers is insane, right from the vast deserts in the middle east to conquests in various parts of Europe, Dice has made the perfect formula for World War 1. Its frantic combat is better than ever, tweaking a few mechanics the game is now more enjoyable and fast paced. Its like the perfect spot between fast paced combat and quick general perception of reaction to things.

The game looks beautiful and environments, animations weapon and character models are so well detailed, they all scream authenticity.

64 vs 64 players never gets dull. Also EA was less greedy about this one, I still feel bad for the Star Wars Battlefront games.

Black Mesa

This one is not a game, it’s a mod but it has to be on the list because it’s a Half-Life fan remake on the source engine, if you are unaware of Half-Life, you are dead to me.

Black Mesa is a masterpiece and it totally reimagines the original Half-Life in a way just like Valve would have. Seeing new areas in Source Engine is a visual delight, its hard to believe Wwhat limits can be Source pushed to, considering its such an old engine. Valve was truly thinking long term when they made the source engine.

Basically Half-Life puts you into the shoes of the theoretical physicist who works at a the Black Mesa Research Facility. One day an experiment goes horribly wrong and you rip open a dimension into an alien world and now its upto you to fix things.

Half-Life 1 was revolutionary and helped defined the FPS genre. SO YOU HAVE TO PLAY THIS.

The Xen levels are out now and the game has left early access, so now is the perfect time to play this timeless masterpiece.

Crowbar Collective has done a neat job.

Overwatch

This one is my eyes is the true spiritual successor to Team Fortress 2. Made ground up by Blizzard, this one was a very different thing from them.

Overwatch borrows heavy inspiration from TF2 and manages to fuse it with MOBA perfectly.

On the surface I’ve seen many people complaining this is a TF2 ripoff and its rich dudes Paladin, tbh it is like Paladin but both games have different dynamics.TF2 is more of an old school class based shooter at this point and OW is more fast and streamlined.

The wide variety of characters in OW may seem unnecessary but believe me, each one of them is well made and balanced. Its like Blizzard has a secret recipe of game balance and it becomes very clear how important it is to nail that balance in this hybrid genre when you get your hands on similar titles who achieve this perfection.

The art style is spot on and meant to age well. The graphics will never go old, such is the art style.

Jump into a few games and you wont even realize how the hours pass.

Resident Evil 2

Later this decade a legendary face re-emerged from the mythical shadows of mystery. Resident Evil is Capcoms that comes into everyones mind when we speak of survival horror games, this was the title that created the genre back in the day.

The remake is very faithful to the original, it successfully captures the tense atmosphere and the struggle of managing resources while scavenging the same old corridors of Racoon City Police Station.

While graphics and other things are aligned with 2019 standards, what is more surprising is the fact that the game is so perfectly transferred from those pre rendered 3D environmental backgrounds with fixed cameras into true 3D yet it manages to retain the whole essence of the thing. Its is big achievement and the game does its own thing in a great way.

Animations, Models, Textures, Sounds, Gunplay and the Zombie AI are perfect and the all new Mr. X is totally rad!

Resident Evil 2 being a new comer in this decade has made a solid spot on this list.

Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order

The game that saved Star Wars, honestly there were not that many good Star Wars titles in the recent years, both Battlefront games had their issues, while the 2nd one had a good production value, it stirred up the hive with its surprise mechanics. It was basically a Star Wars themed Casino and was brutally P2W. They have patched it now and is pretty playable but whats gone is gone.

Jedi The Fallen Order takes places after order 66 is executed. The Jedi order has fallen and the remnants are forced into exile. The empire has gripped the galaxy with its iron fist and the game puts you into the shoes of a young jedi who is accidently discovered by a high ranking Sith Inquisitor, the event propels the young Jedi into an epic journey of self discovery.

You travel across various planets in the galaxy and learn stuff about the lore which gives the series a fresh angle. It is clear that Respawn entertainment has put a lot of heart and soul into this game, it shows deep respect to the source material.  Star Wars needed that. Also, the combat is fresh. It borrows the best of all the successful mechanics introduced in various games of the generation like platforming, souls like combat give a realistic sense to saber battles. It feels like a true Star Wars game.

Overall, this one just came out at the end of the decade and took all of us by surprise.

The Legend of Zelda Breath Of The Wild

Zelda always hands over the torch to the next generation of Nintendo Consoles. BOTW is a fresh take on the long running Zelda series. The series departs from its previous gameplay styles and throws Link into an open world filled with perils. But unlike most games, Zelda is a very relaxing game, the art style is soothing and the game is fun.

You can play this one at your own pace and follow your objectives the way you like. The game looks simple on the surface but whatever goes down the hood is very complex as the game takes interactivity to a whole new level. Climb huge rock faces, cut trees, cook food, find rare loot, craft rare stuff and do all this at your own pace.

DOOM

Rip and Tear baby! Doom 2016 is simply awesome, its fast, brutal, frantic and fluid. Story is classic as ever, where the UAC accidentally opens a portal to hell and now all the demons are pouring in from everywhere. The key difference between the previous Doom games and this one is, earlier you were stuck in a room with demons, now the demons are stuck in a room with you.

Doom gives you a huge arsenal of weapons at your disposal and heaps of demons to kill, kill them the way you see fit.

The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt

OOF…..Witcher 3….what can I say…..

CDPR has dethroned Valve in terms of game design, this is what has happened this decade. There was a time when Valve used to make the best games, now its these guys.

You step into the shoes of Geralt, a professional monster slayer who has embarked on a journey to find his missing daughters in a land that is engulfed in conflict.

Witcher 3 takes place on a vast open world which is stunningly detailed, every 45 seconds you bump into something fresh and exciting. The world of Witcher 3 is well crafted, every section of this world feels vivid. The main story line is engaging but even the side quests are meaningful which is not commonly seen in most games.

The game lets you make choices and the story branches out as per the choices you make which drastically alter the outcome of the game which also gives it a high replay value.

If you call yourself a gamer, you have to play this.

In short, noise pollution from nearby roads and traffic is a massive nuisance.

Apart from being off-putting to use your garden, you may also end up suffering healthwise in the long term.

Acoustic Principles/Treatment Methods

There are two or three acoustic principles or approaches you can choose from when tackling external sound mitigation – deflection, absorption and in effect both by energy conversion.

When dealing with external noise transfer, no two scenarios will be the same and it’s important to understand the basics of what you are trying to deal with, from where it’s starting and how it’s travelling to you in your particular location.

Traffic, by nature of what it is, is moving and varying in way of dB levels, speed, frequencies, power and pressure.

The sound waves propagate away through the air in all directions and will act differently with weather, atmospheric pressures and when bouncing from other objects.

This means that whatever barrier or principle you adopt invariably needs to be a little longer or wider or higher than just the area you think is causing the problem, such as a hole in a single fence panel or a gap in the bushes or tree line.

An initial and very basic approach would be to at least block line of sight (a straight line in which an observer has unobstructed vision of the noise problem) and then add a little bit more.

If you can see it, you are invariably going to be hearing it.

And remember, whatever barrier you adopt has to be not only effective acoustically but also fit for purpose, affordable, stand the test of time and be aesthetically pleasing.

Something which is often forgotten when desperately trying to get rid of an unwanted and seemingly never ending drone.

Let’s look at the differing approaches.

Acoustic Deflection

As the name suggests, this technique aims to deflect or reflect unwanted sounds in the opposite direction.

An example of this application in the garden is to install a high perimeter wall or fence around the garden, so that the traffic noise is effectively bounced back from where it came.

This technique will work better than attenuation but understandably, is a more expensive option than planting shrubs and hedgerows.

Consideration should be given to structures and objects on the opposite side of the road.

This may sound irrelevant however, sound waves travel in all directions and could therefore effectively travel away initially, only to be deflected from the other side of the thoroughfare and bounce straight back toward your barrier.

Worse still, they could be deflected straight over the top of the barrier depending on how tall it is. More on this later…

Acoustic Absorption

Sound absorption refers to the process by which a material, structure, or object takes in sound energy, absorbing to reduce the sound power and sound pressure, thus reducing sound propagation.

One way to achieve this sound muffling effect, is to plant thick shrubs strategically around the perimeter of the garden so that they can absorb sound waves from the road.

This method at best may muffle unwanted sounds in the garden, although seldom has the desired effect as invariably it is not dense and thick enough to deal with problematic frequencies to remove completely.

Absorptive, open cell materials/media used as an external barrier have a limited effect and unless protected simply wick moisture, which reduces the ability to further absorb.

Acoustic Energy Conversion

Acoustiblok Isolation Membrane is a material which works by converting sound energy into trace heat energy.

When sound waves come into contact with the membrane, it vibrates the molecules of the materials which in turn creates friction which is cleverly converted to a trace heat energy.

Thus the material works by converting a more problematic acoustic energy into a less problematic heat energy, which is simply transferred through the material sideways to reduce flanking transmissions.

The material is highly effective as it does not have the associated issues and required thicknesses of absorbing materials, nor the rigidity or mass of dense materials.

Noise Barriers

Be it a wall, fence, or foliage, we’re now familiar with the simple process of how noise barriers work.

However, the type you choose will depend on a number of key factors including preferred type of construction, location, desired effect, height and length and budget.

Barrier Height & Length

Put simply, the higher the barrier, the more effective it will be at blocking or deflecting noise.

To close the line of sight is a good starting point, but the higher the proposed barrier is the better.

This is referred to as the ‘angle of incidence’ with an increased height or length offering an increased angle from the point of original source ignition of the noise to the top of the barrier to force change of effect to acoustic waves.

For example, a fence that is at least two metres tall is far less likely to allow sound to pass over it than a barrier at one metre high or lower.

Barrier Density

As you might imagine, as a rule of thumb the denser the barrier, the more likely it will prevent that noise from passing through it.

This is not completely true as a material’s own density comes with rigidity which in turn can provide a flanking route.

However, this does not tend to be such an issue externally compared to the problem of sound waves going up and over or around the proposed structure.

So if you live close to a particularly busy street that produces considerable levels of noise, you may need to invest in a thicker, denser solution combined with the appropriate or sufficient dimensions – height/length.

Barrier Coverage

Sound has the ability to find ways to pass through even the smallest of gaps or cracks.

So any barrier you build you must ensure that there are no gaps or obvious places where sound can pass-through whatsoever.

Even the tiniest of holes or gaps could considerably reduce the effectiveness of the barrier.

Barrier Placement

Barrier placement plays a crucial part in its efficacy when reducing unwanted traffic noise.

The closer the barrier is to the source of the noise, the more effective it should be at sound reduction by increasing the angles of incidence from the point of original source ignition to the top of the barrier.

Regardless, the most obvious positioning would invariably be at the perimeter boundary which may already have some type of existing structure in place.

Depending on the lay of the land and elevations, secondary barriers may be considered.

Perimeter Barrier Options

Garden fences come in various types, designs and styles.

You may wish to consider the most suitable soundproofing material and option that will be most effective at reducing unwanted noise.

Brick Wall

Brick walls are robust and durable providing increased levels of density and mass which we all know is a basic principle to mitigating sound.

If installed to a good height, they are effective at blocking unwanted noises, especially if built to a reasonable thickness.

This may however not be the preferred option for many people as it is invariably a very costly option when considering material costs, structural foundation and skilled labour to erect.

Local council planning permission may also be required for any reasonably effective height wall from the local authority.

Aside from the above, many people do not like the thought of having a giant brick wall surrounding their garden, as it creates a displeasing and enclosed feel to the space.

Timber Fencing

Timber fencing is one of the most common choices homeowners make when installing a garden perimeter sound barrier.

Apart from being fairly easy to install, they are also reasonably cost efficient.

However, standard timber fences do have a number of common pitfalls.

Wooden fences such as shiplap or feather edge slats can be erected to close the line of sight and be aesthetically pleasing, however they have a tendency to allow sound to pass through gaps in each of the slats.

This can become worse over time with weathering and shrink back of the timber slats.

Overall, timber is not considered a particularly effective sound dampening material.

So if your nearby road noise is particularly bad, a fence in isolation may not be enough to tackle the problem.

Metal Fencing

Some of the more common metal fences may be used more as security fencing and not be preferred as they are not particularly aesthetically pleasing.

In a lot of cases, the fully closed varieties are also quite ineffective at reducing unwanted road noise and add to a high level of resonance and regeneration.

Any open varieties such as wire or chain link quite obviously let acoustic energy pass straight through them.

Although they can offer a cost effective sound structure to create a perimeter barrier onto which acoustic barrier membranes can be applied.

Products like Acoustifence are ideal for this scenario and the results are very impressive to say the least!

Shrubs & Hedging

Shrubs and hedges are often preferred as they complement the garden nicely, offer an aesthetically pleasing site line and also reduce air pollution.

However any type of planting needs to be rather thick, dense and very mature to have any real effect as problematic frequencies will pass through foliage as if it is not even there.

They also come with the need for maintenance, needing regular pruning.

Some types of mature shrubs come at a hefty price.

So if you need to block unwanted noise in a hurry, you can’t buy younger plants and be made to wait several years for them to grow to the desired height and thickness.

Even then the likelihood of success is rather slim.

Acoustic Fences

Acoustic fences are becoming increasingly popular as they are very effective at blocking unwanted noise.

Invariably built with much thicker, denser, tongue and groove interlocking timbers to increase acoustic values.

A sensible approach is starting from scratch and a new structure needs to be erected.

Although they may come with a slightly higher price tag, they are still far cheaper and more aesthetically pleasing than a gigantic brick wall.

They are also far more effective at blocking unwanted sound too.

Acoustic Membrane

In the majority cases, most gardens will already have a fence installed.

So the natural choice for any homeowner is to try to improve on what’s already installed on the basis the existing is structurally sound, sturdy and strong enough.

This changes the perceived levels of the nuisance noise.

Wind Chimes

By placing a number of wind chimes in and around your garden, you can help to create a more tolerable atmosphere that distracts from the road noise.

Even with a gentle breeze, wind chimes start to jingle and produce pleasing sounds that help you forget or at least ignore the traffic noise from the nearby roads.

Trees

The more trees you plant, the greener your space.

And the more you plant, the chances are you are increasing the sound attenuating properties of your garden.

That said, larger trees with larger limbs and branches can actually deflect the sound back towards the ground.

Deflection or reflection in this way is known as urban resonance.

Certain trees are more effective at reducing traffic noise more effectively.

Understandably, evergreen trees rather than deciduous varieties tend to be better due to their density and all year round foliage.

Examples include Leyland Cypress, Eastern White Pine, and Arborvitae.

These can become very large trees that grow quite quickly and as they grow they tend to create height whilst losing the lower growth and density which of course can then leave gapping at the bottom near the ground.

Conclusion

Reducing unwanted noise from nearby roads can be quite difficult especially once one tunes in to the particular noise/frequencies and the perceived levels are increased.

Ultimately, the level of the noise produced will determine the most suitable noise reducing application.

Budgets, aesthetics and convenience all play a part, so there’s rarely a single solution to suit all scenarios.

In some instances, small changes such as plants and garden accessories may suffice.

But in others, more robust solutions may be in order which require contractors to install more permanent structures such as high fences and walls, or even better, specialist acoustic noise reducing membranes to drastically reduce the sound of nearby traffic.

Resident Evil 7 Review

Resident Evil 7:Biohazard may be what the AAA survival horror genre has needed for a long time. Something that takes risks, learns from previous mistakes, uses popular horror tropes and allows the absolutely stunning presentation the opportunity to utterly terrify every player. Every moment of Resident Evil 7 gave me some form of anxiety, terror or complete panic and this is a testament to how amazing this game is at establishing an atmosphere and tone that so many other horror games miss. Capcom have done a terrific job listening to feedback and creating a game that appeals to long term fans of the series, but also brings in new fans that can appreciate the experience as a standalone.

Resident Evil 7 focuses on a brand new character to the series, in the brand new location of Louisiana. The swamp land already gives off an eerie feeling and Ethan, our lead, is entering into the complete unknown, chasing a mysterious video that confirms his missing wife, Mia is alive after disappearing years ago. A strict instruction from Mia is to stay away, however Ethan must look into things in order to understand what is going on. The story is very promising and maintains its intrigue and many surprises as it twists and turns. Depending on difficulty, the game will take you anywhere from 10-15 hours, maintaining a fantastic pace that always presents a threat to your survival. You have moments of safety within the game, but even then the tension of each threatening situation will have you scrounging for resources. You are presented with a fairly typical setup, however the main antagonists of the game are unique and fascinating. Ethan is drawn to an old mansion in which he is captured by the Baker family who are seemingly invincible and downright disturbing. This is an instant problem for Ethan as he attempts to escape and explore the Baker house in search of Mia.

The level design of the old house and the surrounding area is where the gameplay and environmental story telling shine. Resident Evil 7 is full of interesting environments, that are packed with fascinating details and clues as to what is happening in the story and how our location came to be. Each drawer, desk, cupboard and locked door present new clues and valuable resources. What I continued to find with the game is the fact that the developers spent a lot of time ensuring everything made complete sense. Doors connect to rooms that feel natural, the backyard and surrounding houses link in ways that are well organise and make traversal feel familar. The level design feels a lot like Dark Souls and Bloodborne as you are open to explore, but must follow a natural critical path to unlock shortcuts and equipment that help you traverse to other areas, or return to where you started. As you progress you can return to areas with new equipment to unlock doors, find items and even just check out an area that is now clear of enemies. The progression feels natural and interesting as every area presents new challenges and gear that you can pick up. This gear is crucial to your success, as Resident Evil 7 does not hold your hand at all. You are expected to use your brain, both fighting enemies and making your way through the old estate.

While the main antagonists of the game are seemingly invincible, Ethan can still fight back and the gear you locate through exploration really helps you feel more powerful the further you get. It is a natural progression from being completely unarmed to a weapon wielding psychopath. In traditional Resident Evil fashion, you can only hold so many items, utilising your space in a backpack carefully. When the backpack is full you can no longer pick up items. You are forced to backtrack to a rare safe zone and deposit your items in a chest, or use your items to make more room. Every weapon takes up a certain amount of space, forcing you to make some challenging choices. Do you load up on health, bullets, stimulants or keep a hold of important mission items. It is completely possible you don’t bring the right mission item to a critical point and are made to backtrack to collect it. The game ensures you are thinking ahead about what you need to survive. I absolutely loved the inventory management systems in place. They never felt too fiddly or complicated and created a real tension when using your equipment knowing that you could run out of health at any moment and be forced to become a pinpoint sniper taking down enemies with your limited supply of rounds.

Combat takes place against molded like creatures who feel added in to make the game in order for the experience to take a little longer. The combat against the Baker family is much more meaningful and memorable and these moments are what players will remember after reaching the conclusion. The molded are explained later in the game, however during the combat scenarios they feel a little repetitive and clumsy. They can easily swarm you if you are not aware of your surroundings and can often take a huge number of bullets to take down. The shooting feels fantastic and responsive, each shot landing gives great feedback and the weapons are fun to fire. Pistols, shotguns, knives, a grenade launcher and flamethrower are the tools of the trade for Ethan and each are useful in the right situation. Combat is never the overwhelming focus of the game however, as Resident Evil 7 pushes forward storytelling and exploration first.

As you make your way through the story and take down the Baker family in some of the most memorable and entertaining boss fights of the current generation, you begin to see exactly where the game is heading and how well it has been put together. The game gives you so much to think about and consistently looks and sounds absolutely incredible. The first person point of view, is the major change to the series and it would not have worked at all if Capcom didn’t nail the presentation. There are many times, in which Resident Evil 7 looks utterly incredible. The detail in the character designs and the feel of the old house is fantastic. The weapons look great and the environment surrounding the house looks very well polished and realistic. This calibre is matched by the quality of the sound design. Every good horror game has to have great sound design and this is not exception. Creaks of wood, consistent bumps in the night and the incredible change in volume when an enemy bursts out of nowhere to frighten you, is phenomenal. The attention to detail really enhances the overall experience.

Resident Evil 7 steers the franchise back to where it needs to be. Scary, tense, full of fantastic puzzles that make you think and a narrative that is intriguing, a little ridiculous, but ultimately interesting. All of these and the brilliant characters combine to make an experience that is a must play for fans of horror and first person experiences.

As I said in the introduction, this game not only brought 3D elements into game design in a new and interesting way, but also paved the way for what we now consider an entire genre. How well did it succeed? And how well does it perform as an “Adventure Game”? And most importantly, how will it score on a PISSED rating? I began this game with a vague knowledge of it from my childhood memories, knowing certain parts near the beginning quite well, while the late game had faded almost completely. The attic area in particular are ingrained in my mind, as that’s the place where you spend your time learning how to play the game, and the dangers it presents for you to overcome.

It certainly tries to increase the tension and danger at every step, even near the end there wasn’t a point I felt truly comfortable, although the oppressive atmosphere is at its best when you’re exploring the house proper. Derceto makes for a wonderfully dreadful haunted house, almost every room containing a trap or a monster. A thorough search is required too, unless you wish to be left confounded by puzzles later on.

To spawn a genre requires a notable first entry, to allow for themes and ideas to be copied or expanded upon, and certainly you can’t deny that this was something quite unique in 1992. Games using 3D had been around for a while, but this was a great step forward in using 3D models to provide characters and monsters with expressive animations and interactivity. Puzzles and Solvability

The strongest puzzles were in the first half of the game, with encouragement to read all the books you could find in order to discover clues that might assist you. Some puzzles allowed you to avoid fights which could tax your health or resources, and others were required to progress through the game. There weren’t too many difficult ones though, and although there are many items to pick up, it was usually quite easy to figure out what to do.

I found the worst puzzles were those where you’re put under pressure from monsters, such as in the library. A crucial location, it requires you to perform a thorough search to find the secret room and the way of defeating the Vagabond (and in turn requires you to have thoroughly searched a nearby room to even gain access).

Any puzzle where dying is the main obstacle to solving it is perhaps not a great one in an adventure game, such as when I was running in circles around the tree during my battle with the owner of the house. While this creates tension the first time or so, that tension withers if you know what to do but fall short of being able to do it in the required time.

The final areas are largely a maze to be explored and don’t provide the same level of challenge as the house itself, which is a real shame. I found myself doing a lot more running and felt like I wasn’t able to explore and investigate as the earlier sections had required.

Interface and Inventory

I actually really enjoyed this interface and inventory system. It only becomes more of an issue later, when it adds the “Jump” command without previously giving you that option, and when you have far too many items to scroll through (partially my problem with being a classic adventure game hoarder).

The interface works well with the environment, searching for clues and moving around is generally easy. It falls down a little with the fighting, as often the otherwise wonderfully atmospheric camera angles can really throw off your aim and sense of distance. I feel this wasn’t fully solved as a problem with this sort of game until fully 3D environments were commonplace.

The inventory items get a spinning 3D graphic to show you what they are, although they don’t provide any written descriptions for the items, some of this information can be found in the various books and other written documents found throughout the house.

It’s pretty simple to use, and the game is paused while you’re in this menu, so there’s no rush to select the action you desire, but more ways to interact with the items or item descriptions might have pushed this score a little higher.

Story and Setting

The story borrows very heavily from H.P. Lovecraft, and isn’t afraid to let the player know this with references to the Necronomicon and Cthulhu. It’s not a straight rip-off though, but rather an homage in the style. You begin investigating an apparent suicide, and from there uncover a history of strange visions, demonic forces, and a house that was built by a bloodthirsty pirate for his nefarious quest for eternal life and power.

The story is told through the books and notes scattered through the house, working backwards from Jeremy Hartwood all the way to the source of evil himself, Ezechiel Pregzt. The source of the evil in this house, at least. The powers that granted him this unnatural existence are beyond the mind of a humble private detective.

You could say this is a game about reading, about knowledge, the power of it and the dangers. The clues you need for the story and some puzzles are all available to be read (or indeed listened to, in the CD-ROM version). This knowledge is what propels you forward in your quest, but it is the dark and forbidden knowledge that Pregzt used and that so captivated the Hartwood family, and lead to their ruin.

Proper horror games are less common, but horror and adventure gaming make for a good mix in this reviewer’s opinion. It’s not the most complex story though, and some of the monsters and weird creatures don’t fully tie in with the overall theme.

Sound and Graphics

I’ve already discussed in part the strides it makes with graphics, but this rating is less for the important history of the game, or what it inspired, but to acknowledge the often brilliant art and design that went into this game. It is easy to scoff at the low-poly figures, but their animation is often brilliant, notably for the main character. Everything from walking, fighting, drinking and even dying happens with a fluid and expressive motion, something which is shared by many of the monsters you see.

The background art also is impressive, and it is here that you appreciate what I have termed “camera angles” as the forced perspective shows you only what parts of a room the designers wish you to see, obscuring potential danger until you are right upon it. This is something that horror film-makers have been doing for decades, and it’s great to see a game so keen to move beyond the flat landscapes and interiors we are so familiar with.

As for sound design, I was playing through on the CD-ROM version, which gives this a massive boost. CD quality music accompanies your progress through the game, with bold orchestral tracks to stir your emotions. The voice-over work is of a good standard too, with every book and note read to you, by a variety of different voice actors.

Environment and Atmosphere

This is a category where Alone in the Dark can score highly. The game immerses you in its haunting and unsettling rooms, danger lurking beyond every hallway and behind every door. The combination of the claustrophobic viewpoint and the slow, careful way your character moves really does increase the tension as you uncover the house’s secrets.

I enjoy a good horror story, and the game carefully gives you breadcrumbs throughout as to what is happening in Derceto, and the lack of other friendly characters make those books and notes your only companions in this otherwise bleak and lonely house.

The caverns beneath the house are wonderfully creepy, but very light on any story by that point. Other than a letter directed at the player character, it becomes more of a series of mazes and jumping puzzles and loses a bit of the mystery and potential for horror than earlier sections.

The way it uses music and sound heightens the tension and atmosphere greatly, with slower tracks for when you’re exploring replaced by faster tempo music for the inevitable fighting. Occasional sounds, such as creepy laughter, and noises from the house’s supernatural inhabitants attempt to give you a sense of foreboding and danger even when there is currently nothing dangerous apparent on screen.

Dialogue and Acting There’s no dialogue to speak of, no other friendly characters to interact with, everything being delivered to you in writing. From the introduction to our main characters to the books and notes you uncover, I enjoyed reading it all, but it is a more limited experience compared to games that provide colourful characters to interact with and as we’ve seen recently with King’s Quest VI that cast can be quite large indeed.

The voice-acting is of a quality that is about as good as you could expect from this era, with notably anguished acting for Jeremy Hartwood’s notes to the pirate drawl you might expect from the game’s villain. They add a lot to what might otherwise become a more sombre experience, and since we are playing a game here rather than reading a novel I welcomed the voices.

A fair score I think, doing well in a couple of areas but let down a bit by others. It’s ambition paved the way for an entire genre, and I feel this score is appropriate for that, but it’s flaws prevent it from getting too far up the leaderboard. How many of its direct and indirect descendants will we see on this blog in the future? We will have to wait and see.

Is Alone in the Dark still worth playing now? I’d certainly say so, it certainly holds up to memories of playing it as a youngster. It isn’t likely to actually scare anyone, but like much of Lovecraft’s work that this game picks from, the horror is less in directly frightening you and more in the feeling of unseen and unknowable forces beyond your control.

The graphics certainly are of their time, but a retro aesthetic hasn’t stopped many other games from doing well. Perhaps this era of early 3D will become a nostalgia property akin to the pixel art of 8 and 16 bit console eras.
