The History of the “I Want to Believe” Poster from The X-Files
Did you know there are several versions of the famous “I Want To Believe” poster? Here’s a thread breaking down the history of the poster and some of the behind-the-scenes and in-show explanations for all these changes!
Here’s a link to the thread on Twitter! Tumblr only allows for a few pictures, so the Twitter version has more examples.
Tumblr media
Version 1 (Seasons 1-3)
The poster’s concept art came from series creator, Chris Carter, stating: Let's get a picture of a spaceship and put—Ed Ruscha-like—"I want to believe." I love Ed Ruscha. I love the way he puts text in his paintings. I actually got to say to him, "I was inspired by you."
Here’s an example of Ed Ruscha’s artwork. This piece in particular, “That Was Then This Is Now #1” (1989), was clearly influential in the creation of the iconic “The Truth is Out There” part of the opening sequence.
Tumblr media
In the show, Mulder tells Scully that he bought the poster from a headshop [a nickname for stores that specialize in marijuana products/drug paraphernalia] on M Street. The poster is seen during Pilot (1x01), so it can be presumed Mulder bought it sometime prior to March of 93.
In the beginning of season one, the set for Mulder’s office wasn’t firmly established. A lot of elements are familiar, but the iconic set as we come to know it isn’t quite there yet. For the initial episodes, the first version of the IWTB poster can be found near the door of the office
Tumblr media
As season one goes on, Mulder and Scully seem to have some fun doing occasional interior decorating in between cases as items are constantly moving. In Eve (1x11) we can see the poster is behind Mulder’s desk, but it’s not quite in the normal position. In “Fire” (1x12) we can see the poster arrangement in the office appears to be getting serious as an abundance of large posters start popping up.
Tumblr media
I’m starting to believe that one of them was very pro-Astronaut poster, because in “Gender Bender” (1x14) the IWTB poster is hidden behind other images and placed high on the wall (where it remains for s1)
In the finale of S1, the poster is still hidden high on the wall. Interestingly, when Mulder goes back to the closed-down office in “3” (2x07), the poster is finally in its usual position behind Mulder’s desk.
Did the cleaners move it? Mulder? The righteous hand of symbolism??
Tumblr media
By “Firewalker” (2x09), The X-Files department is back, Scully’s returned, the poster is in it’s rightful place — what could go wrong?
When the art department originally presented the poster to Carter, he recognized the photograph of the flying saucer they had used as a cropped version of the famous Billy Eduard Albert Meier's "Photo Nr. 494" (Billy Meier photo 494).
Tumblr media
When Carter asked if they had gotten clearance to use the photograph, they replied that they had. Unfortunately, this was not the case, as a few years later Fox Legal called Chris, stating that they had "an intellectual property lawsuit" due to the use of the Billy Meier photo.
As a result, they had to change the poster and this version is only seen during seasons 1-3.
Tumblr media
And not only in Mulder’s office! In “Jose Chung’s From Outer Space” (3x20), Blaine Faulkner is shown with the IWTB poster in his room -- only he’s taped his to say “I Believe”
Tumblr media
The final appearance of this poster is “Talitha Cumi” (3x24).
Version 2 (Seasons 4-5; 10-11)
Due to the rights issues, the art department had to completely change the poster’s look while still keeping it recognizable. They created a new UFO and changed the landscape of the trees among other things.
The first time, from my perception, that we see this new poster is in “Tunguska” (4x08) The characters make no reference to the poster change, within “The X-Files” universe, the poster is the same.
This poster gets to hang around in the background for all of seasons 4 and 5!
Tumblr media
It’s common for people to look at the poster introspectively, but this poster features the first textual address as Scully asks Mulder about it in “Chinga” (5x10) Mulder says he got it around five years ago. Since this episode takes place in 98, this confirms it was bought in 93
Unfortunately this poster meets a tragic end in “The End” (5x20) as it gets destroyed when the office is set on fire.
Tumblr media
Version 3 (Seasons 6-9)
This marks the first time where the poster needs to be replaced within the world of the show. It takes sixteen episodes for this to happen.
I would like to note that, despite the fact we know they have a dozen posters, they just leave a dramatic empty spot on the wall.
In “Alpha” (6x16), Scully notices that Mulder’s online friend, Karen Berquist, has an IWTB poster hanging in her office.
Later, Karen, knowing her fate, sends Mulder her poster and he puts it up over the aforementioned dramatic empty, poster-sized space. Peace is restored.
Tumblr media
It’s slight, but s6 introduces the third iteration of the IWTB poster. The saucer is tilted the opposite direction, and there are minuscule changes to the coloring and borders. It’s believed these are just symbolic changes for the move to L.A.
This third version of the poster stays through the rest of the original series’ run, from seasons 6-9
Tumblr media
The last time we see the poster in the original series is on the floor of the emptied out office. Doggett, as always, is the real MVP and rolls it up for safe keeping. Now that’s a true friend. Interestingly, the initial shot of it on the floor is of v.2, but he rolls up v.3.
Tumblr media
Version 2.5 (I Want To Believe)
Six years have passed, but have no fear, the IWTB poster is still intact and ready to appear in the aptly titled movie “I Want to Believe” The movie features it’s own style of poster, but only slightly. This is pretty my v.2 (used in s4&5) but without the white border
Tumblr media
Within the world of The X-Files, much like the s3 to s4 poster change, there is no indication this is a different poster than what we last saw Doggett carrying.
According to fan, Brian A. Terranova, the switch from v.3 back to v.2 here further suggests that the difference in those two posters is dependent on where they are filming (v.2 tilting to the left when in Vancouver, v.3 tilting to the right when in L.A.)
Frank Spotnitz has said that when it came time to make the movie, they had one of the posters left over from Season 5, and so they used that. The lack of a white border may indicate that this was a draft  poster when they were trying to figure out what the new design would be.
Regardless, I think it’s wholesome to operate under the presumption that this is the same poster, because that means Doggett helped them reintegrate back into the area after the On-The-Run era and that he held onto it for them
The Return of Version 2 (Seasons 10-11)
In the revival, we bring back v.2 in full again. Yet again, this contributes to the notion that v.2 = shooting in Vancouver and v.3 = shooting in L.A.
We don’t have to wait long to see the poster again! In “My Struggle I” (10x01), when Mulder returns to the basement office that’s been empty for fourteen years, the poster is right there in the middle of the floor… where it was before Doggett picked it up…
Tumblr media
Mulder subsequently kicks the poster and rips it in half. Have no fear though, by the next episode “Founder’s Mutation” (10x02), their office is completely refurbished and it appears that the poster has been taped together. Don’t forget that in S1 we saw that Mulder and Scully dabble in a side gig as interior decorators
“Mulder and Scully Meet the Weremonster” (10x03) features another direct reference to the poster as Scully states that the poster is hers. I think that Mulder regretted ripping his poster and Scully, being supportive and encouraging (in line with this ep) bought him a new one
Breathe in a breath of fresh air, though all the dreams, visions, and lies, continuity continues going from s10 to s11 — pencils and all
Tumblr media
Then “This” (11x02) gives us a new revelation — there is another IWTB poster at the Unremarkable House (also v.2)
Tumblr media
Hear me out, ignore the fact that IWTB doesn’t have a white border. As mentioned earlier, I believe that in txf universe, the poster was the same as what Doggett brought them at the end of s9.
I believe that Doggett gave them the poster they had in their office from s6-9 (gifted from Karen in Alpha). They keep that one in their house.
I think Mulder (as evidenced in s10) has a propensity to damage his property, so Scully just has a lot of spare posters on hand
So how does that explain why there was a random poster on the floor in “My Struggle I” (10x01)?
Lol who knows. Maybe it was the same custodian who rearranged the poster before putting plastic wrap over everything in S2. He just really wants to believe, okay?
In “The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat” (11X04), they bring back Version 1 of the poster as a tounge-in-cheek reference to the real-world X-Files mandela effect where people were confused about the art changes
Tumblr media
And the image is Mulder’s laptop background! Because of course it is! Then he gets made fun of via aggressive puns. He deserves it for not having a cute, domestic pic of him and Scully together. Or a hot boudoir pic of Scully. Aka, Mulder, there are other options bro
Tumblr media
We first saw the IWTB poster through Scully’s eyes, walking into the office for the first time, so it’s only fitting we last see it at their home in the background behind her
“I may not believe in god, but I believe in you”
The final shot of the poster; “My Struggle IV” (11x10)
Tumblr media
The “I Want to Believe” Poster’s Legacy
The only remaining prop poster that wasn’t stolen or destroyed was given by Gillian Anderson to the Smithsonian in 2008. Chris Carter attended the ceremony and donated several other props from the show. The poster is v.3, likely an original prop from L.A. and is autographed
Tumblr media
The poster is a pop culture icon and is likely just as legendary as the show. When spoofing txf, using the poster will always set the scene — as evidenced here with The Simpsons and SNL
Tumblr media
Recently, Chris Carter donated a screen-used IWTB poster to The X-Files Preservation Collection! The X-Files Preservation Collection also houses Chris Carter’s Zip Disk with the original file of the poster! Reason #1013 for why we all need to go check out @XFilesMuseum in Saratoga Springs, NY!

1x7, 1x13, 1x14, and 8x21
Fans are still ridiculous with their Takoma Park theories. Scenes in these four episodes need to be combined for full consideration. They’ve already revealed the fact that Reddington lived at the Takoma Park house with his wife and daughter, and that Jennifer is bubble girl.
This leaves the audience with two theories.
1. Diane Fowler was referencing Red’s wife and daughter going into WITSEC, and the story Red told Madeline Pratt was fake.
2. A family member other than Red’s wife and child were harmed at the Takoma Park house on Christmas Eve over 20 years ago.
I stand by my theory that it was the real Red’s mother who died there, as she falls in parallel with Diane Fowler and the bloody mess Red left behind. Red would’ve been around 30 years old, so his mother would’ve been around Fowler’s age. All anyone has to do, is imagine Fowler with two grandkids... “Grandma’s pumpkins”
Fowler's bloody scene in 1x13 needs to be considered with Tom's bloody scene in the pilot, since they're written alongside each other. If Red were the target, Tom would be the parallel. Since Red wasn’t home, his mother would’ve been the target, and Fowler would be the parallel.

favorite music moment on the oc? for me the 'dice' new years eve scene has lived rent free in my head since '03 but you can't deny the impact of mmm watcha say lmao
I haven’t finished the oc yet, i’m on 3.14! I will be stopping after 4.01 tho lmao. but so far, i’d definitely say “dice” in 1x14! I love marissa and ryan so much and the song is perfect for that scene. but also, the editing in that scene is perfect. it could’ve easily been super corny but it just worked ??? and the slow motion beautifully enhanced the moment and ugh poetic cinema tbh

Episode 18: Scheherazade
Tumblr media
This episode is wonderful. Here are my thoughts.
SPOILERS AHEAD.
0:12 - Sooooo did Malcolm convince Gil to let him take the Surgeon case files from the precinct?
0:32 - Malcolm was eating Chinese take out? IDK. That stuff is pretty greasy. Something tells me that Chinese take out is not a good food to eat if you have a sensitive stomach.
1:24 - To be clear - Eve and Malcolm are not dating in this moment correct? They broke up last episode? Am I wrong?
2:04 - So Malcolm did want to go to this thing right? He genuinely likes ballet and his mom decided to make it a mother/son date. Ugh. So freaking adorable. <3
2:10 - Listening to Jessica talk on the phone is really interesting here. You can see that she’s embarrassed that she’s there alone and annoyed that Malcolm stood her up. She’s trying to be quiet and discreet on the phone so none of the nosy rich people notice but - of course - you can see them all looking at/talking about Jessica  in the background. I feel really bad for Jessica here. She doesn’t belong in the average person world because she’s rich and she can’t hang out in the rich people world because they’re all a bunch of overgrown high schoolers with the bullying and cliques to match.
2:24 - Look at how excited Jessica is initially - when this woman b**ch starts talking to her. Jessica looks hopeful that someone is going to actually be nice to her. Her gorgeous face drops when this Cricket woman starts being a b**ch. Props to Jessica for dragging this woman about the admissions scandal though.
2:53 - Ok. I immediately don’t like Endicott. Why? He clearly only saved Jessica because he wants to get in her pants. However, I love the way Jessica looks at him. She’s hopeful, flattered, and grateful. She almost never looks this happy and it’s a damn shame.
3:35 - Quick side note: Jessica looks amazing in that dress. Blue looks good on her….wait. Do you think she wore a blue dress because it would look good with Malcolm’s eyes? Not in a creepy incest way - just in a “I’m matching with my son” because we have a close, non-sexual relationship way.
4:50 - hahaha Cricket got blood spatter on her face. She deserved it.
5:00 - “You know your Mom called this in right?” - I love this. Jessica didn’t call 911. Before anyone could even think of calling 911 - I promise you Jessica was on the phone with Gil. Because Gil has always protected her family. She trusts Gil despite the fact that - like her son - she trusts almost no one since Martin was arrested.
5:02 - Again. I LOVE THIS TEAM. Talk about character/relationship growth. Dani and Malcolm making lighthearted banter. JT being really forward about telling Malcolm to go and check on his mother (who just witnessed a murder). I love that we are now at the point in this team’s relationship that JT and Dani love Malcolm so much that they worry about Malcolm’s Mom. <3
5:16 - Props to Edrisa. She’s a little neurotic and often anxious. BUT check out the way she laid down the law with that dude who was touching evidence. This girl is great.
6:00 - “Welcome to 2020. Can’t rule anything out.” - Can we just appreciate this line. It was probably written in late 2019 or before the whole COVID-19 nonsense in 2020. What a timely, well-delivered line. They probably writers probably did it by accident too. They were probably trying to allude to the craziness that was about to unravel with Endicott for the rest of this season. I love this show.
6:15 - JEALOUS GIL ALERT. Honestly - this was amazing. Gil is so jealous (not hiding it well btw) but he’s trying so hard to be a professional.  ALSO - check out the way that Endicott is looking at Gil. Endicott knows that Jessica and Gil have feelings for each other. He also knows that Gil suspects him as a murderer (for this case and the 1x19 case). Yikes. If Endicott has Gil injured, maimed, or killed in 1x20 I WILL THROW HANDS.
7:07 - This is cool to me. Jessica is mad at Malcolm but she doesn’t call him “Malcolm Whitly”; she calls him “Malcolm Bright”. This implies that Bright might be Malcolm’s legal last name. If it’s not - it means that Jessica respects her son. No matter how angry she might be at him - she would never intentionally harm him. She’s a good mom. (ALSO EDRISA’s REACTION ahahahaha and the way that Malcolm closes his eyes when he hears Jessica’s voice like “Aww shit. I’m in trouble.”)
7:30 - Honestly, I think it was both. From what we learn in this episode - Malcolm likes ballet. He’s probably sorry he missed the murder (because you know he’s Malcolm) but I feel like he was also looking forward to the event. Even if it meant that he would have to schmooze some rich people and listen to his Mom be a little nervous and a lot extra throughout the night.
7:45 - YES. YES. This is the perfect reaction to Eve. One that I’m sure a lot of fans can relate to. Yes - we hate the fact that Eve manipulated her way into Jessica and Malcolm’s lives. We hate that she broke both of their hearts. However, we sympathize with her brutally dark childhood and the loss of her sister. You can hate someone’s actions without hating the person as a whole. AND RIGHT HERE you can see that duality on Jessica’s face.
8:08 - At least Malcolm isn’t lying to Jessica? But dang. He looks so guilty about telling his Mom that he’s planning on visiting Martin. Probably because he knows Jessica will worry about the meeting, Malcolm’s mental health, and all other potential fallouts of Malcolm’s “plan”.
9:15 - Look at Malcolm here. He’s staring at Eve with a mixture of fear and concern. For once - he’s not focused on Martin. Malcolm’s concern for Eve and Eve’s pain is overpowering the discomfort and anxiety that Malcolm experiences when he sees his father.
9:20 - “You’re prettier than I imagined.” Ugh. Go to hell Martin. Malcolm looks so freaking ashamed to be Martin’s son right here. Look at his sad little face. :(
9:38 - What a toxic parent. He’s a serial killer and he’s still trying to make his ex-wife seem like the bad parent. Martin needs therapy.
9:45 - Holy hell. Malcolm looks terrified…..actually Martin looks a little scared too.
9:52 - I love this. Malcolm is so afraid of what Martin might do to Eve that he jumps over that red line. Also - take a second to notice how Malcolm grabs Eve. It’s not intimate. Definitely not the way you’d grab a significant other or a close friend. His hands aren’t touching her. He has his hands clasped around each other and his arms wrapped around Eve’s shoulders. This is a very gentlemanly way to grab a lady - even in a panicked, dangerous situation when he’s probably acting on sheer instinct and fear. Malcolm’s not thinking of where his hands are positioned. This is how he reaches for her instinctively and I respect it.
10:05 - Malcolm looks so scared here. Eve slapping Martin was definitely not part of the plan. Eve is improvising.
10:40 - Again. Check out the way Malcolm grabs Eve’s shoulder. It’s not the way you’d put your hand on a significant other’s shoulder. They are not dating here.
10:43 - Look at Martin’s face. It’s twisting in disgust. Is he actually feeling guilt for being a terrible father? I thought psychopaths couldn’t feel remorse? Maybe he’s just disgusted that his son is in a relationship with a woman who would have the nerve to insult Martin to his face?
10:50 - “I’ve told you all I can.” Martin’s eyes show fear in this moment. After watching 1x19 - I see why.
11:09 - The way that Martin shouts “Malcolm” is haunting. You can see it upsets Malcolm too by the way he grips his head. I wonder if Martin used that tone of voice with Malcolm as a child? Martin supposedly acted like a perfect father but what if Martin was verbally abusive to Malcolm when they were home alone together? Maybe this is how he conditioned Malcolm - like with that “Boy!” in 1x14, right before Malcolm stabs Martin. What if he drugged Malcolm to make him forget then too? Is that why Malcolm looks like he’s having a traumatic response to his name being called in that tone?
11:16 - Malcolm is impressed by Eve but also a little scared of Eve. Her performance was alarming to him. He didn’t expect her to be that angry.
12:04 - Edrisa is a national treasure. “I disagreed” bahahahaha. OMG. Even Gil looks amused at this one.
13:15 - “To maintain a comfortable lifestyle”. Seriously - do the writers want me to suspect Endicott? I seriously pinned it on him the whole time I watched this episode for the first time. Now I know better - but he’s still a sleaze bucket who has killed people.
13:34 - I love how no one on the team is buying Malcolm’s “my rich Mom took me to watch ballet as a kid” act. They know there’s more to it than that. They know Malcolm well enough to know when he’s lying.
13:40 - Gil is like “I’ve known you since you were 10. Jessica did not take you to the ballet for as long as I’ve known you. I would’ve heard about it.”
14:05 - I wish Malcolm always looked that happy when he declines one of Martin’s calls.
14:26 - This is seriously disconcerting. This is the most sincere and serious behaviour that we’ve ever seen from Martin. Martin is scared. Now that I’ve seen 1x19, I understand it. He’s afraid for himself. Of what Endicott may do to him if this gets out. I still can’t quite figure out if Martin actually cares about what happens to Ainsley, Malcolm, and Jessica though. I don’t think he’s capable. I hope I’m wrong.
14:32 - Soooo Mr. David doesn’t know about this. That makes sense. Did Mr. David see Martin get slapped? Are these phone calls recorded? Is that why Mr. David gives Martin that look? To remind Martin to keep quiet about the slap because it could cause Mr. David to lose his job? Are they friends? Ugh. This relationship is so fascinating to me.
15:33 - Look at Gil. He does not like the catty attitude of these ballet dancers.
15:45 - OMG. JT looks like he’s watching reality TV. He’s amused, a little confused, a lot shocked, and he can’t look away.
16:00 - I don’t like this Joesph dude - because he’s a jerk. BUT he has a point. These ballerinas seems very unstable. In the emotional sense.
16:12 - Dang. This is brutal. I didn’t like the way this girl was acting - but no one deserves this.
16:53 - “I’m right here. I’m right here.” UGH. Gil saying this is so freaking sweet. All I can imagine is Gil saying that to Malcolm as a kid when Mal wakes up from a nightmare. <3 Ugh. The thought is warming my cold, dead heart.
17:15 - It’s a little concerning that Malcolm looks so excited about being in the same building as an active killer. ALTHOUGH - he regularly visits his serial killer father. Maybe he’s so used to being afraid of killers that he doesn’t even register it anymore? He’s so focused on solving the case that his own safety doesn’t even register as a concern?
17:23 - Papa!Gil is angry. I’m picturing him giving Malcolm a lecture in this tone of voice after Malcolm did something stupid when he was a teenager.
18:00 - Malcolm is having the time of his life. Look at this boy go. He has a group of suspects to profile and they’re all standing right in front of him. Life can’t get much better.
19:30 - Yep. This dude is a jerk. Also - Malcolm looks tiny next him. How tall is that dude? I know Tom Payne is short but damn.
19:36 - Question: why wasn’t Fiona in this group that was initially being profiled? Was she not in the building?
19:55 - Look at this. Jessica totally wants to talk to Martin. She is so pleased that she finally has something to rub in Martin’s face to make him jealous/angry. Also - can we all just appreciate how Jessica picks up the phone?!? When she’s addressing Mr. David?!? hahahaha comedic GOLD.
20:12 - Martin is losing his marbles. He really is an attention whore. Dang.
20:18 - “Martin stop being a helicopter parent.” - Yo. Jessica, I love you but you are a hypocrite.
20:30 - And this was the moment that Jessica forgave Eve for betraying her and Malcolm. Hahaha look at how absolutely delighted Jessica looks when she finds out that Eve struck Martin. hahaha
20:35 - Look at the way Martin glances over at Mr. David as he asks Jessica if she’s paying attention to him. It’s as though he’s reigning himself in because he knows Mr. David will hang up the phone and leave the cell if Martin loses it. Martin is so desperate for attention that he’ll take a bad phone call with his ex-wife over being alone in his cell. I almost feel bad for him. Almost.
20:43 - Huh. Do you think Gil saw that photo? How do you think our jealous cop reacted?
21:03 - Ok. So, in this scene Martin is chained to the wall. He’s talking on the phone. Mr. David is in the room. NO one else. WHAT ARE THE PARAMETERS REGARDING WHEN MARTIN GETS CHAINED TO THE WALL?!?!? There have been so many scenes when Martin is not chained to the wall and he’s alone with Mr. David. I have so many questions about how this works.
21:06 - Martin’s toddler-esque hissy fit is freaking hilarious. This dude is unstable.
21:24 - Martin’s flashbacks have to be true. Right? So we can all say with 100% certainty that he took Malcolm to the cabin and held a girl (Sophie) in the cabin.
21:43 - Poor Mr. David. :( He looks so done with Martin’s nonsense. Why doesn’t Mr. David quit? He could easily get a position guarding a less insane prisoner. He’s been with Martin for 20ish years. At this point he’s either a) friends with Martin, b) developed some sort of twisted Stockholm Syndrome, c) working for Endicott, or d) getting paid a lot of money.
22:34 - Fiona is a nasty Queen B and I’m annoyed that Gil can’t arrest her on principle.
23:25 - “He upset some very powerful people. They made his escape from Cuba possible.” ….Soooo Endicott is definitely a shady dude. I still think he had something to do with Javier’s death.
23:40 - “Jessica’s friend?” - Dang. Gil, you’re jealousy is showing. <3 hahaha also he looks so freaking unsurprised. Gil’s like “I knew he was shady. I KNEW IT!!” And I find it really interesting that he refers to Jessica by her first name in front of Malcolm. Usually, he’ll say “your mother” or “your mom”. This indicates that Gil currently feels personally involved in Jessica’s life. This is a situation that is affecting him as opposed to Malcolm so he’s referring to her as “Jessica” instead of “your mother”.
24:02 - OMG. Gil, please stop being so obviously jealous of a woman in front of her son. Her son is a profiler. He can see through you and you’re probably making him uncomfortable (look at the way Malcolm looks down and smirks after Gil does this he knows). Regardless, this is the single funniest thing Gil has ever done on this show.
24:15 - Are Endicott and Gil really having a weird, not-so-subtle “guy-off” over Jessica while talking about the investigation?!? Malcolm looks hella awkward. He’s like “Fake-Dad vs. suspect/Mom’s crush. What do I do?”
24:43 - ENDICOTT DO NOT PRETEND THAT YOU DIDN’T KNOW MALCOLM WAS HER SON. Your shady ass has totally been keeping tabs on her whole family for the past 20 years.
24:50 - DANG. Check out that look that Jessica gives Malcolm. It’s like “Do not embarrass me in front of Nicholas. Do not tell your sister what you’ve seen. Do not discuss what you just witnessed with me. Ever. This did not happen.”
24:54 - Gil, buddy, I love you but looking at your watch is super obvious. Please reign it in. Your jealousy, while hilarious, it not attractive to a woman.
25:09 - I feel so bad for Malcolm throughout this whole scene. He’s clearly still interested in solving the case but he has this confused, slightly disturbed look on his face as he watches the whole love triangle fight go down.
26:06 - Once again, the whole “guessing JT’s name” is my favourite running gag on this show. Look. Even JT is into it now. He used to be super annoyed by it. This is how much JT and Malcolm’s friendship has grown. I’m so proud of these losers.
26:20 - OMG. hahaha “Posion.” Is Gil considering poisoning Endicott because he’s really that jealous?!!? I doubt it. More likely - Gil is suspecting Endicott of killing Javier. HOWEVER, I also think that this is a very subtle hint by the writers that Endicott is going to poison Gil in the season finale. I DO NOT WANT TO BE RIGHT - but I have a horrible dread that I will be.
27:00 - Seriously? Martin gets an iPod too? Is he really a prisoner?!? This dude lives better than me.
27:30 - So Martin is mad at Malcolm here. “Kids.” Huh. So did he actually try to kill Malcolm that night? Or did he chicken out when he got up to the cabin?
28:13 - HOW THE HELL DID MARTIN GET EVE’S PHONE NUMBER?!? Magic? Does he get internet access? A phone book? He has Mr. David find it for him?
28:25 - Check out Malcolm’s face. He looks longingly and sad as he stares at the ballerinas. He stares at them with respect too - not lust. He really likes ballet. <3
29:00 - Is Malcolm projecting here. “You took a chance on him when no one else would.” Did he quit dance because of how people treated him after Martin was arrested? Does Malcolm identify with Javier?
29:10 - Listen to how Fiona praises Javier’s work ethic. It almost feels like she’s talking about Malcolm. Of course, she isn’t, she doesn’t know Malcolm. BUT the writers know Malcolm. Is this a subtle hint that Malcolm is not a killer? That he’s incapable of being a killer? I mean - they even go so far as to have Fiona say that something about Javier’s performance was off - not his work performance but his personal performance. Is that a reference to Malcolm’s deteriorating mental health? Maybe I’m reading way to much into this…
31:14 - Does Malcolm even know he’s projecting here?! I don’t think he does. Gil sees it though. Damn. I’m surprised he didn’t challenge Malcolm on it. Or hug him. Ugh. My heart is broken.
33:05 - Is Malcolm so shocked that he doesn’t move? Or is this just Malcolm’s passive suicidality at work here? Watch Gil tackle him to the ground though. <3 I’m in love. This is the father Malcolm deserves.
33:36 - hahaha look at Malcolm’s precious little ballet jump. Gil sees it too. Gil is like “Wtf? This kid totally did ballet at some point. How did I not know about it?”
35:15 - Look at how freaking proud Gil is of Malcolm. Gil - a man who likes classic cars, has sports trophies in his office, and drinks fancy liquor. Gil is, in a lot of ways, stereotypically male. He finds out that his dorky pseudo-son did something as stereotypically feminine as dancing ballet (and enjoyed it) and Gil doesn’t bat an eye. He doesn’t get mad. He doesn’t tease Malcolm. He just looks at him with pride. We need more men like Gil in this world.
37:00 - Anyone else extremely upset by the idea that Martin put his son to bed like a Good Dad before going downstairs with the intent to murder a woman?
38:25 - I feel really bad for Sophie. :(
39:20 - Soooo is Sophie still alive? Or did Endicott have her hunted down and killed?
40:29 - This isn’t the first time in this series that Martin has bashed Jessica’s parenting skills. Or the first time he’s hinted that Jessica did something bad to the children. Given Jessica’s behaviour toward Ainsley and Malcolm - I doubt it. That woman adores her children. However, she does have a drinking problem and I’m starting to wonder what Martin thinks makes Jessica so bad. Is it simply because she divorced him? Or that she kept the children from him? Or is it something more?
40:50 - Well at least Malcolm knows Martin has been gaslighting him. :(
41:06 - Soooo Mr. David totally heard that conversation. Makes you wonder if Mr. David is working for Endicott. The things that Mr. David knows…
41:50 - So Eve definitely broke up with him here. Again? Honestly - I have no idea when these two were actually together.
43:21 - I do not like that monster inside the Whitly house. No no no no.
Well. Thanks for hanging out Prodigies. See you next time.

The Updated/Revised List of Rip Hunter’s Angst and/or Trauma on Legends of Tomorrow
So, a while back, I made a list of all of the horrible/traumatic shit that has happened (or has been established to have happened) to Rip Hunter on Legends of Tomorrow.  Because, honestly even for the lead on a CW show, this is a little ridiculous.
I’ve been updating that list via reblogs, but that’s getting a bit cumbersome, and I wanted to refine a few of the entries anyway.
So, here we go, an episode by episode list of angst or traumatic events (updated as of 2x14, Moonlight):
1x01/1x02 - The Pilot
1.  Rip Hunter starts off this series with a sledgehammer of angst in the form of his dead wife and child.  We also see that his family home is the site of the second London Blitz in an Apocalyptic future.  I possibly could space these events into separate entries.  But honestly, this list will be long enough without that.
2.  Rip has also been cast loose by the organization to whom he has devoted his life, an organization that apparently thinks that sending assassins to stop a grieving widower is more appropriate than sending a grief counselor.
3.  Rip Hunter has recruited a team of people who he cannot remotely control or keep in line.  And sadly, one of them dies, because he recruited him.  Rip is devastated enough by this to scrap his own plan to get Savage to reclaim his body.
1x03 - Blood Ties
4.  We learn that Rip made a previous attempt to go back in time to stop Vandal Savage, and hesitated.  A failure which haunts him to this day.
5.  During the course of fighting Savage, Rip slips and gives Vandal Miranda and Jonas’s names.
6.  There is an implication at least that some of Rip’s experiences as a Time Master were unpleasant (” I've seen men of steel die and dark knights fall, and even then I accomplished my mission no matter what.”)
1x04 - White Knights
7.  Rip meets up with his former mentor, Zaman Druce, a man that he respects and trusts considerably, who seems to be offering a reasonable deal.  Instead, it turns out to be an ambush.
1x05 - Failsafe
8.  Gideon’s records indicate that, with Martin’s capture, the Russians will unlock Firestorm and weaponize it for an invasion.  Rip asks Sara to be ready to kill Martin to save the world, if there is no other choice.  (It didn’t happen, but he still has to live with making that order)
1x06 - Star City 2046
I don’t think there is any specific angst in this episode.
1x07 - Marooned
9. We see more of Rip’s backstory with Miranda, and their treatment from the Time Masters when discovered, including fairly horrific public humiliation and Miranda's resignation.
10.  We get Eve Baxter’s reaction and rejection of Rip’s help.  Both personally humiliating and even worse as a representation of the Time Masters and his old colleagues/family.
11. We get the fight with Mick Rory, where Rip, after some provocation, says some inexcusable things, providing Mick with the trigger to betray the group.
1x08 - Night of the Hawk/1x09 Left Behind
There really isn’t any specific angst in these two episodes to add to the list.  Unless you count Rip’s old bosses turning Mick into Chronos...
1x10 - Progeny
12.  Going by Rip’s scene with Mick in the brig, he does seem to have some self-blame for Mick’s predicament.  As we see from the way he tries to take the blame and divert Mick’s anger onto himself.
13.  The Per Degaton blunder - in which Rip chooses not to kill the dictator that will murder 1/4 of the world’s population, and in the process, speeds up the event.
1x11 - Magnificent Eight
14.  We learn, in this episode, that at some point in his career, a younger Rip Hunter befriended Jonah Hex and engaged in some heroism.  However, he ultimately chose his career over love heroics, and left the town of Calvert to its fate.  A decision that clearly haunts him to present day, and makes him quite unwilling to face his old ...friend.
1x12 - Last Refuge
15.  Early backstory angst!  Rip Hunter was once a starving five year old street thief.  And while we have no details about that time, it was apparently bad enough that he grew the instinct to stab any adult that threatens him.
(In my first draft of this list, I noted that they’d probably given him this angst so he has something to suffer about when his family angst was finally resolved.  I HAD NO IDEA what was to come.)
16.  We learn that the Time Masters recruit their members as children.  Which means that they aren’t just Rip’s bosses, they’re also the people who raised him.  Getting raised by a creepy time cult that forbids attachment totally counts for this list.
17.  We also have guilt over the risks to both his crew’s loved ones and the extreme danger of the Omega Protocol, and this ridiculous temporary solution.  Which leads into a much riskier decision.
1x13 - Leviathan
18.  In this episode, we get that lovely revelation that Rip didn’t just watch his family die once.  He actually tried to save them, only to watch them die “countless” times.
19.  Savage has set up a situation where Kendra, the only one who can kill him, has to choose between killing him and saving Carter.  Rip protests, but then accepts her decision, even though it removed his one guaranteed chance to save his family.
1x14 - River of Time
20.  In the flashback, we learn more about what happened when Rip failed to kill Vandal Savage.  He was captured, starved, and implicitly tortured.  (”Ramses’s men inform me that still you refuse to speak...”).  It’s not clear how long he was there, but it was definitely an unpleasant experience.
21.  Rip makes increasingly bad decisions trying to get the Waverider to Vanishing Point, culminating in putting Jax in a very deadly situation.  His self-loathing after is palpable.
22.  And then of course, Rip finally gets Savage to the Time Masters, proof in hand, only for that lovely, final betrayal.
1x15 - Destiny
23.  Rip learns that not only are the Time Masters working with Savage, they DELIBERATELY sent him after Miranda and Jonas, in order to set their plans in motion.
24.  The death of Leonard Snart, which Rip takes so badly, that he tries to abandon the entire crew in the next episode.
1x16 - Legendary
25.  Rip achieves his goal of killing Vandal Savage, but fails at saving his wife and child.  It’s not quite a pyrrhic victory, but it’s still fucking depressing, almost culminating with suicide by sun.
2x01 - Out of Time
26.  This is subtle, but Rip spends most of the episode looking anxious and perturbed.  Like he’s waiting for the other shoe to drop.  As we saw from his goodbye message (which, as we see in Raiders, he had to have recorded much earlier), he definitely expected to have to flee.  From the look on his face in the flashback in JSA, he may well have realized what happened to Rex.
2x02 - JSA to 2x08 - Chicago Way
Rip isn’t in these episodes (except a tag scene and flashback.)  So no angst.  A few secrets, like the armory and tape.  But no suffering.  Yet.
2x09 - Raiders of the Lost Art
27.  We learn exactly what happened after the nuclear blast in Out of Time: Rip Hunter, in an attempt to hide a piece of the Spear of Destiny, undergoes “temporal electrocution” obliterating his identity and memories.
28.  “Phil Gasmer”, film student, is attacked out of the blue by the Legion of Doom.  He has no idea what’s happening or why.  In the process, he loses his script and film.  He also has terrible hair.
29.  “Phil Gasmer” is arrested without any clear charge or cause.  He is kept in an interrogation room, with no visible access to a telephone or an attorney.
30.  “Phil Gasmer” is kidnapped by people straight out of his script (pretending to be his psychiatrist!), informed that his life is a lie, and insulting him to his face.  And then, in an attempt to save them, he is kidnapped.
2x10 - Legion of Doom
31.  “Phil Gasmer” is tortured for an undisclosed amount of time, by two expert torturers.  He loses a tooth and is forced to wear a terrible purple suit as well.
32.  Eobard Thawne gets access to Rip’s mind and makes alterations.
2x11 - Turncoat
33.  Well, look, if you don’t think Rip isn’t going to be torturing himself for years about this entire episode?  You don’t know Rip Hunter.
2x12 - Camelot
34.  There are more things that Rip is likely to torture himself for, including the murder of Doctor Mid-Nite, the dead knights that he’s mind controlled, Galahad.  He also got abandoned and left to die by Damien Darhk.
2x13 - Land of the Lost
35.  Yet more guilt (this time for overriding Gideon and crashing the ship).  We also learn what the inside of Rip Hunter’s mind looks like: with the last bit of his own, true identity, imprisoned, hurt and terrorized by evil version of his friends.
36.  The team uses a machine that Rip himself thinks is too barbaric and violating to use, in order to go into his mind.  I doubt Rip will complain, as it had the desired results, but well, two mind-rapes make a right, I suppose.
(I considered adding the Gideon thing, but well, let’s see where that goes.)
2x14 - Moonshot
37.  Rip, having left an amiable Commander Steel in 1965, is greeted promptly by a punch to the face, and a cold shoulder from someone he seemed to think of as a friend.
38.  Rip is also dealing with the changes to the team since he was gone, and is at a loss regarding his role going forward.
39.  Rip’s proposed solution (opening the hatch) worked to save the ship.  However, Commander Steel sacrificed his life to do it.  More angst.  Yay.
--
39 incidents.  In 30 episodes.  He wasn’t IN SEVEN OF THOSE EPISODES..
And what are the odds that an episode called “Doomworld” will go remotely well for him?
At this point, I can’t bring myself to ask for a beach episode, because I think it would end with a shark biting off his foot.

Are you caught up on the Librarians? how do you feel about Cassandra being queer?
i am caught up on the season, yes (they totally had me going for the finale in which i was like NOPE THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT HAPPENING NO NOPE DON’T BUY IT WHAT THE HELL and then i was like …aha, well played) and i LOVE her being queer??!
like, i did (and still do) lowkey ship her with jake, so i’m holding onto her being bi, but throughout the whole episode with the vampires (is it just me or was there some shade being thrown at twilight there, literally…) i was like, wow, so, cassandra and lady vampire should really just kiss already, they’re definitely playing up the UST, hmm. (also i don’t think they’ll ever pair off cassandra with jake or ezekiel, they’ll keep them as a brot3 and have flynn/eve be the main ship and that’s fine with me.)
then cassandra and lady vampire did kiss (i can’t remember her name i’m the worst) and i was like OMG THEY ACTUALLY WENT THERE, JUSTIFIED?!
and i was just really happy about it for several days and i smiled when i thought about it and yes
iirc, this was right around the time that lucifer revisited and confirmed lucifer is bi in 2x11 (i yelled so loud when the second murdered ex was a dude and there was a dude in the interview lineup and just that whole thing is my favorite), and that was what made me finally admit to being bi myself and my whole feelings/process over that, and so it was just really nice.
i’ve also started to default headcanon characters as bi, heh. like in 1x14 of timeless when josephine baker was CLEARLY flirting with lucy, i was like OH MY GOD KISSSSSSS, i mean all the historical dudes have fallen in love with her, let the historical lady get to first base with her, let lucy kiss a famous beautiful historical lady please and thank you.
so yes.

I could keep going, but there’s just too much, so here are at least fourteen contradictions in dialogue that show why I believe Raymond Reddington was framed after his death rather than before.
These two dialogues offer two contradictions each.
[If he was framed prior to his disappearance, he wouldn’t be grooming for admiral, stated in both dialogues. If he was with Masha at the rented beach house, he wouldn’t be on his way home, stated in both dialogues.]
1x1 -
Ressler: Raymond “Red” Reddington attended the Naval Academy. Top of his class. Graduated by the time he was 24. He was being groomed for admiral. Then in 1990, Reddington’s coming home to see his wife and his daughter for Christmas. He never arrives. This highly respected officer up and disappears from the face of the earth. Until four years later, when classified NOFORN documents start showing up in Maghreb, Islamabad, Beijing. These leaks were traced to Reddington. This guy’s an equal opportunity offender, a facilitator of sorts, who’s built an enterprise brokering deals for fellow criminals. He has no country. He has no political agenda. Reddington’s only allegiance is to the highest bidder. Tech: They call him something in the papers. Ressler: “The Concierge of Crime.”
2x9 -
Several TV news people: We are just now getting word of a story developing out of Hong Kong. Sources say authorities there have apprehended legendary criminal Raymond Reddington. He’s been on the FBI’s Most Wanted list longer than any other fugitive, but tonight, sources are confirming Reddington was arrested in Hong Kong just hours ago. Reddington was once a rising star at the Pentagon. Sources say he was being groomed for admiral when, on Christmas Eve, 1990, while on his way home to visit his wife and daughter, Reddington vanished. Reporter: Four years later, Reddington resurfaced and was charged with treason in absentia for selling top-secret American intelligence to foreign states.
This dialogue is completely contradicted.
[Disappearing first, “THEN come to find out” meaning he was framed later.]
5x19 -
Jennifer: I’m your daughter. The one you abandoned 28 years ago on Christmas Eve. Did you think of me at all? In my pink room, in my pink pajamas, waiting for Santa. When I went to sleep, my world was perfect, and when I woke up, it was destroyed. My daddy gone. Did he just leave? Was it an accident? We didn’t know. All we knew, was my daddy - my good, kind, and decent daddy was gone. And then come to find out - you weren’t good or kind or decent. You were a traitor. And we were sent into hiding. From you. From my father.
[This coincides with Carla’s. Instead of Christmas Day, it was “one day”]
2x4 -
Naomi: I had a life, you know? My daughter had a life with a house and a dog. And then I woke up one day. You can’t imagine what it’s like to have a man like Raymond Reddington turn your life upside down. They accused me of being a part of it? Somehow, I was a suspect. Put my life under a - a microscope every call, every charge. My assets were - I finally convinced them I was innocent. They said I had to go, give up everything. I remember it was a Wednesday afternoon. My daughter wasn’t even out of school yet. And by Thursday, we were in Philadelphia, fending for ourselves.
This dialogue is contradicted.
[He would’ve been a traitor prior to turning his back on his family.]
4x17 -
Kate: He turned his back on his family, his country. And for what? A life of crime? He’s a traitor.
This dialogue is contradicted.
[She wanted them to be a family while framing him for treason.]
1x14 -
Liz: I found a couple - to take the baby. Thinking about it is one thing, but actually doing it - How did she do it - my mother? Red: Your parents loved each other very much. The Cold War was hard -  too hard for your father. When the Soviet Union was collapsing, he took you from her. She gave up everything to follow him, to follow you. Liz: The night of the fire - that’s what they were arguing about? Red: Your mother, despite what he’d done, she wanted him back. She wanted them to be a family. As much as it pains me to say it, he was probably the only man she ever really loved. Liz: And I shot him. Red: It was an accident.
These dialogues are contradicted.
[Timeline contradiction. Two months after December of 1990 isn’t 1990.]
1x14 -
Liz: Tell me. I need to know. Red: Your mother was never the same after that. The man she loved killed by the child she adored - it was just too much. Two months later, she went to Cape May and left her clothes on the beach, walked into the ocean and was never seen again. Liz: So, that night, I killed both my parents. Red: You were a child. There should never have been a gun for you to grab. Looking back, I’m not sure I shouldn’t have raised you myself. I don’t want you looking back with that kind of regret.
3x16 -
Red: Velov is the one who lied to you, Lizzy, not me. Katarina Rostova committed suicide in 1990.
This dialogue is contradicted.
[Since Alan Fitch knew about the affair and Masha’s paternity.]
4x17 -
Katarina: The KGB uncovered my affair with Raymond, which means US Intelligence knows as well. Both sides are tracking me down. I have to leave the country.
6x9 -
Fitch: Because you’re sleeping with him. Katarina: Because he has proof that the Cabal exists, proof that would be released in the event of his death. Fitch: The Fulcrum. Katarina: And because I love his daughter. My daughter.
The tape contradicts this bit of the fire argument.
6x9 -
Katarina: Because he has proof that the Cabal exists, proof that would be released in the event of his death. Fitch: The Fulcrum.
[Because Fitch gave her the choice of killing or ruining him.]
2x10 -
Katarina: They’ll kill you if you don’t give it back Red: They’ll kill me if I do.
6x9 -
Fitch: I want this mess cleaned up. Get rid of him or ruin him. Just get it done by Christmas.
[But coincides with this dialogue.]
1x10 -
Fitch: What I don’t know is whether he’s telling the truth. If you kill him, it could trigger whatever he has in place.
This section of the tape contradicts more fire dialogue.
[Since if he was framed prior, he’d know about it.]
6x9 -
Katarina: Reddington knows. He knows everything. Fitch: Explain. Katarina: He’s discovered my identity. And the existence of the Cabal.
[The fire argument appearing to happen prior to the phone call]
2x10 -
Katarina: It was my job. Red: It was your job? To spy on me? Katarina: Yes. No, I didn’t want to. I - I tried to protect you. Red: Is that what you call it?
Three contradiction dialogues.
[Katarina would’ve been wanted prior to framing Red.]
4x17 -
Red: I make no apologies for who I am or what I do. Katarina was a traitor to two countries, both global superpowers.
Compared to Red’s interrogation of Ressler.
6x1 -
Red: Is it because you’re uncertain? Or aware of mitigating circumstances that have given you a different opinion of me? About who I am today as opposed to who I once was?
[Not only contradicting the timeline, but her affair. Fitch already knew they were sleeping together.]
4x17 -
Katarina: The KGB uncovered my affair with Raymond, which means US Intelligence knows as well. Both sides are tracking me down. I have to leave the country.
[Contradicting the difference of intent.]
5x19 -
Red: In 1990, the KGB and the CIA had almost nothing in common except the mutual determination to hunt down one individual. Being a fugitive from American law enforcement is a lot easier than being a fugitive from the two most powerful nations on Earth. And anyone close to a target of theirs becomes a target themselves.
Katarina needed to be wanted prior to Red. He was already dead, she needed him to remain alive. How easy it would’ve been to say Red is dead, Fitch, just as you wanted him to be. I’m pretty sure that’s not how this shit went down. If Raymond Reddington were wanted Christmas Eve of 1990, Raymond Reddington wouldn’t be coming home at all. Period. His ass would be running. I think it more likely Katarina framed him after, when she was intent on becoming him because she herself was wanted and needed Red to remain alive. An easy $6 million to jump-start her criminal career.

karen’s favorite twilight zone episodes (8/x): (1x14) third from the sun (wr. r. serling; dir. richard l. bare)
Quitting time at the plant. Time for supper now. Time for families. Time for a cool drink on a porch. Time for the quiet rustle of leaf-laden trees that screen out the moon, and underneath it all, behind the eyes of the men, hanging invisible over the summer night, is a horror without words. For this is the stillness before storm. This is the eve of the end.
