Reposted from @nasa Humanity first spotted this supernova in 1572. 📅 This supernova remnant is called Tycho, named for Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe, who noticed the bright glow of this new “star” in the constellation Cassiopeia 451 years ago. New observations by our Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) have built upon past data collected by @nasachandraxray. IXPE’s findings revealed, for the first time, the geometry of the magnetic fields close to the shock wave. Understanding the magnetic field geometry allows scientists to address some of the biggest questions in astrophysics, such as how Tycho and other objects accelerate particles closer to the speed of light than the most powerful particle accelerators on Earth. The Tycho supernova blast itself released as much energy as the Sun would put out over the course of 10 billion years. That brilliance rendered the Tycho supernova visible to the naked eye here on Earth in 1572, when it was spotted by Brahe and other stargazers, potentially including an 8-year-old William Shakespeare, who would go on to describe it in an early passage of “Hamlet” at the turn of the 17th century. Brightest on the lower side in this image, the planet’s outermost ring is made of dust and small pebbles. The brightest moon visible in this image is Ariel (lower right), which might have the youngest surface among all the moons of Uranus. The other five moons can be seen just outside the rings. All but one of them is named for a character in William Shakespeare's work: Desdemona, Portia, Cressida, and Puck. The last one, Belinda, was named for an Alexander Pope character. Two of the James Webb Space Telescope’s images — one taken in near-infrared light and the other in mid-infrared — were fused together for a new take on a familiar classic. This composite sets the star-forming region ablaze with fresh details.⁣ ⁣ Look for thousands of nearly formed stars, looking like bright orange-red spheres that lie at the edges of the dusty pillars. Stars primarily show up in near-infrared wavelengths, so this is the work of Webb’s near-infrared camera (NIRCam).⁣ ⁣ Meanwhile, Webb’s mid-infrared instrument (MIRI) is all about dust. That’s clearest in the layers of diffuse, orange dust draping the top of the image. The densest regions of dust are cast in deep indigo hues, obscuring our view of the activities taking place inside the dense pillars. Set within the Lagoon Nebula – a stellar nursery with scorching temperatures, stellar winds, and powerful radiation – these stars form in a gigantic cloud of interstellar dust and gas.⁣ ⁣ Astronomers use telescopes like @NASAHubble, which captured this image using its Advanced Camera for Surveys and Wide Field Planetary Camera 3, to investigate proplyds.
