[ESCAFLOWNE] Nobuteru Yuki’s flower illustrations meaning…
Flipping through one of my Nobuteru YUKI’s artbooks (Senshi Bankou), I stopped once again on his Escaflowne flower illustrations.
For more a decade, I never asked myself why Yuki has drawn flowers around the characters.
(I thought it was just a nice ornament.)
It’s only recently I felt that - maybe - these flowers have a signification.
So I made some research on flower language…
And I saw these wonderful illustrations with a brand new eye !
[ DISCLAIMER :
I’m French and I did some researches in my language.
Maybe flowers have different meanings in other cultures, but it seems they have big similarities between japanese and french (so why not for others !).
I found this exercice very pleasant and instructive. ]
HITOMI (Daisy flower)
This pretty white flower with a yellow heart evokes Innocence, Candour and Purity.
Delicate and Feminine, it is the symbol of Youth, but also of Fidelity.
VAN (Purple Iris)
Iris flower has different meanings to different people and cultures.
Here are some of its meanings:
- Royalty
- Confidence
- Wisdom
- Hope
- Courage
MERLE (Sunflower)
The specificity of sunflower is to follow the sun’s path.
In that way, sunflower represents unwavering Loyalty and Sincerity. It stands for Admiration and Praise.
ALLEN (Red Rose)
Emblematic symbol of Passion and Love.
This love is both Deep, full of Longing and intense Desire. It is also the symbol of Devotion.
But it can also represent Blood or a Wound.
MILLERNA (Pink Lily)
Symbol of Majesty and Royalty.
Elegant and refined, the pink lily flower is associated with Purity and Beauty of Youth, but also with Rebirth, Dynamism and Passion.
It’s also a symbol of Tenderness and Affection.
DILANDAU (Narcissus Flower)
Like the myth of Narcissus - in love with his own reflection - this flower symbolizes :
- Vanity
- Egocentricity
- Self-satisfaction
Depending on the culture, the Narcissus flower can also evoke Death.
FOLKEN (Black Tulip)
Symbol of intense, eternal Love that lives in Suffering. This love can be between two lovers or between family members.
But the tulip can also evoke Forgotten or Neglected Love.
It can then accompany the Loss of a Loved one.
Thanks to its elegance, it also symbolises Royalty.
NARIA & ERIYA (Adonis / Pheasant's Eye)
* also known as Fukujusō in Japan.

In greek mythology, Adonis was an Aphrodite’s lover, killed by Artemis.
Adonis flower evokes Heartache but also Melancholic Memories (a painful memory that we cannot get rid of).
Fukujusō means in japanese: Fortune.
DRYDEN (Strelitzia)
* also known as Paradise Bird
The meanings of Paradise Bird flower are many :
- Freedom.
This flower is a symbol of freedom, like a free bird in the air. It reminds us to let go of our worries and embark on a new adventure.
- Success and Excellence.
- Optimism and Joy.
It reminds us to always be cheerful and keep a smile on our face, no matter how difficult life gets.
- Faithfulness.
VAN x HITOMI (Edelweiss)
Edelweiss can only be found on the steep peaks of the Alps.
The climb to pick it is almost lethal.
This flower is a symbol of Eternity.
It expresses Purity and Deep Love.
(In Tyrol land - Austria / Italy - a bouquet of edelweiss was given by the groom on the wedding day.
This flower shows his Courage and Devotion to his beloved).

You may (or may not) remember the scans/translations of the tiny Escaflowne Bible artbook. This is the second to final part to be posted, called Character Profiles (or Character Biographies). Many thanks again to @legendofthesevenstars for the proofread!

DRYDEN FASSA
Height: 189cm

A/N: For some reason, he is the only one who has these in this book. They match the data stated in other books, though (where other characters are included).
Profile
Wealthy merchant Meiden’s eldest son, Dryden Fassa, 21 years old in Earth age, is a peddler traveling around the world. Seven episodes before his first appearance in episode 14, he was already mentioned in the conversation around King Aston’s dinner table. Aside from commerce, he pursues research of Atlantis. Looking impulsive at first sight, he shows a surprising amount of resolve and generosity. Is his ignorance to everything else once he has focused on something just a chip in an otherwise perfect diamond?
Question of Interest
Millerna or research? Which is more important?.
Until episode 19, knowing that Millerna liked Allen, he did not make any forceful move, even if he had a reason to. But he was so engrossed in reading the travel journal, he did not even notice Van fighting outside. For him, both Millerna and Atlantis are serious concerns, and maybe he is just acting according to his own desires.

Look cloooosely at his feet – for some reason, he is wearing modern shoes. Where and how did he get his hands on those?
Dryden looks hip in his round glasses… but unkempt..
Keeping a lazy stubble, he looks a bit dirty, but he does quite humorous and magnanimous deeds.
The jacket down and hair down look. Looks somehow even more unkempt.
FOLKEN FANEL
Profile
To become a strategist of the imperial army, he sold his fatherland to Emperor Dornkirk. Equivalent to 25 years of Earth age, he is the creator of the Intensified Luck Soldiers Naria and Eriya and planner of the Golden Rule of Love strategy that was meant to break the relationship between Van and Hitomi. Why did he betray his country and became a subordinate to Emperor Dornkirk? He is a man of many mysteries...
Question of Interest
Did Dornkirk make the artificial arm?
The arm was made by scientists according to Dornkirk’s instructions. The particulars of it will be revealed after the 20th episode.

DILANDAU ALBATOU
Profile
Dilandau is equivalent to 15 years old on Earth. Because of the wound he got from Van on his right cheek, he is determined to hunt him down. He was the captain of the Dragonslayers under General Adelphos, until the squad was annihilated by Escaflowne in episode 14. The horror of that scene caused him to have a mental breakdown and he is shown in episode 15 in the state of a screaming, crying child. Somehow it seems that his past hides a huge secret.
Question of Interest
Are all Dragonslayers prettyboys by Dilandau’s choice?
After Dilandau took the head of the enemy general in his first campaign at the age of 14, he was awarded his own unit, the Dragonslayers. He was even entrusted with the personnel selection. He hates the belief that only those with a successful track record should pilot guymelefs and focused rather on the talent of the individual. It seems as a result, handsome youths were gathered by the selection coincidentally.

In episode 14, the Dragonslayers met their heroic end. On one hand, the squad of handsome youths won ardent fans for themselves, but the truth is, they are quite an enigma. Not much else is known about Dragonslayers besides having 15 members, and being around 15 years of age. For most of them, we don’t even know their name, let alone background. The names we know, besides Miguel introduced below, are Guimel, Dalet, Chesta, Gatti, and Viole, 5 in total. Protecting their captain against Escaflowne’s attack even from beyond death, their loyalty is admirable. Prayers for their happiness in the other world.

"Th-that's cold…"
"I know, I'm sorry. I wasn't able to warm it up past room temperature before you were brought in." Azrael smoothed Eriya's golden hair back; it was taking every last ounce of her will to maintain her composure as she watched the blood trickle down the gravity feed and into the younger leopard's arm. "It'll keep warming up, just be patient, cousin."
On the other side of the bed, another gravity feed dripped thin, clear golden fluid into a receptacle on the floor: the "fortune blood" that Dornkirk had concocted.
The vile poison that had nearly killed her darlings.
The only family she had left.
(Something carbon black and molten red curled in the pit of her stomach; she would kill that man for this. She would flay him like a stag, would peel the flesh from his bones and dig the heart from his chest and he would die screaming, screaming for mercy that she would never give him -)
"I'm sorry, Aszhe, I - I should have listened to you-"
"Hush." She almost winced at the sound of her old name, curling her fingers around Eriya's and giving her hand a reassuring squeeze. "You did what you thought you had to do… and now I must do the same."
"What-?"
Azrael gently laid Eriya's hand on her belly and pressed a soft kiss to her forehead, then turned on her heel and made for the door.
"Neu! Thaddeus!" She barked, her voice now carrying a commanding sharpness; Neu's head appeared from behind a doorframe just down the hallway, with Thaddeus a moment behind. "Make sure Eriya stays in bed. Sit on her if you have to."
"Where are you going?" Neu asked, her round ears curling back in apprehension.
"To fetch her sister," she replied, "now go!"
As Neu and Thaddeus hurried to Eriya's hospital room, Azrael heard Jeffrey protest from his own bed. "What about me? Am I chopped liver or something?"
"You can barely stand," she called back over her shoulder, "so you stay put!"
Her footsteps were a sharp click-clacking on the stone tile as she approached the end of the corridor - a sound that stopped short when she saw Folken round the corner. When he saw her, he stopped as well… and for the first time in the ten years that she'd known him, his impassive expression was something other than frustrating or reassuring.
Her rage boiled over, and a split-second later the sharp CRACK of a forceful slap echoed off the walls.
"WHERE. IS. NARIA."

In one of my alternate universe stories Van had the guts to tell Hitomi he’s in love with her in that fateful mill scene. This was kind of a starting point for one hell of a ride!
It is so much fun to actually let them be a real cute even a bit annoying teenager couple. Lots of kissing, awkward moments, funny conversations, love confessions, shy desire, fighting… they grow really strong together, teach each other a lot (he how to really trust again, she how to fly Escaflowne, so in general they start seeing the world a little more through each other’s eyes), Van develops a quirky sense of Humor to make her laugh…
So much fun.
In the process they find a solution for the war without hurting anybody, but with real badass teamwork! Folken gets to live, Naria and Eriya too, everybody lives! Basically everyone gets to be a little bit smarter in my story 😬
But well, all good things must come to an end…

Escaflowne voice meme
Introduce yourself! When did you first watch Escaflowne? What brought you into the fold? I first watched Escaflowne about four years ago. I was introduced to the anime after coming across an AMV of scenes from the anime set to Battlefield by Blind Guardian, and I liked the animation style so much I decided to give it a watch. I loved it and it has been my favourite anime ever since
Who is your favorite character and why? Was it love at first sight? Has any of their qualities or quirks swayed you on characters in other series? I always liked Hitomi, I liked the depiction of her as a young person with anxiety and found it very easy to sympathise with her. I think she’s a very good example of a teenage girl protagonist who comes across as believable and genuine without being annoying, and I love that there are consequences for her immense power, and her fears and anxiety are treated in a genuine and sympathetic way. I like that she makes mistakes and doesn’t always do the right thing but still tries to be honest and brave.
Which side are you on? What do you think happens Post-Hitomi when she leaves? Who do you think will be the next opposing power? Van’s and Fanelia’s. I find Folken interesting and he has some sympathetic goals, but even he comes to realise you cannot liberate people at the point of a bayonet. You’re only creating more war and suffering. Post-Hitomi leaving? I hope she finds happiness. I wouldn’t be surprised if she returns to Gaia when she is older and more confident in her ability to control her anxiety and powers, but in any case I think her and Van will always have some kind of link even if they remain separated. Basram seemed very aggressive during the back part of the war. Either them or a revanchist Zaibach seem the most likely threat to Gaia’s peace.
Least favorite plot point? Was there something you think should have changed? What do you think would have made it better. Other than plot points that get brought up and then abandoned for time I think having Dilandau removed from most of the back half of the plot was a mistake. I think the parallel between him and Van is great, Van who almost has to force himself to fight and takes little pleasure in it slowly becoming more violent and aggressive as Dilandau who lives for war and brutality begins to unravel and lose the will to fight after Van massacres the dragonslayers in a fit of rage. I would have pushed that fight back and kept Dilandau as an antagonist for most of the plot, keeping the Celena stuff for the last few episodes. I don’t think Naria and Eriya manage to be as interesting as Dilandau.
OTP? What kind of art and fiction would you like to see? What are some head canons you have for them? What is you NoTP I’ve always had a soft spot for Van and Hitomi, they’re both quite stubborn about it and both too anxious to admit their feelings because of how much they like the other person and are scared of destroying their friendship. I see Van and Hitomi as very outdoorsy and gentle, I think they’d be quite a sweet couple. I’m quite fond of Van/Dilandau as well because of the parallels between the two, generally in post canon. They’d be the opposite, very passionate and fiery. Very intense and you wouldn’t want to be around them, whether they’re getting on that day or not. I haven’t seen any pairings that have made me uncomfortable so far, but I don’t think I’m an easily squicked person.
What would you like to see in a figurative remake/sequel? Would you include more minor characters? Would you want a whole new story that could be a stand alone? Mostly just the story expanded to the original 39/40-episode plan. I’m more curious about how that additional time would have been used than about alternate stories in the same universe or other characters. I think one of Escaflowne’s strengths are the characters, even minor ones feel like real people, it’s clear a lot of time and thought went into them. I worry that would get muddled if the cast got much bigger.
Movie, Series, Game, or Manga preference? What are things you did/didn’t like of each? I’m only familiar with the series and the movie, and of those I much prefer the series. The movie is visually beautiful and the music is great (even though Kanno decides to rip off Prokofiev’s battle on the ice at one point for some bizarre reason.) But Escaflowne’s plot was already struggling to fit into a 26 episode anime, trying to cut it into a single film was just madness. I still quite like Hitomi, who seems more depressed than anxious here, but she seems to have much less of an impact on the plot. Most of the other character changes are for the worse in my opinion (with poor Folken getting the full Denethor treatment.) Dilandau is still very fun though, and I love every scene he’s in!
Do your favorite impression! Bonus points if you can do a conversation with a scene cut in! If I could do I’d probably go for Dilandau. Might try it at some point if I can find my decent microphone.
What do you think about the idea of a re-dub? What are your feelings about the current cast selection for Van (and others if more are introduced)? I first watched the English subbed version, so that’s the version I’m most attached to rather than any English dub voices, and I think all the original Japanese voice actors did a great job. I think I first watched the film dubbed and I quite liked that but I don’t really have strong feelings on a re-dub, other than it might get more people into escaflowne and be good for the fandom!
