"When casting the role of Solo, Lucas sought actors who had individual screen presence as well as chemistry with Skywalker. He wanted Solo to be older than Skywalker and to possess a cynical edge. Lucas desired new and unknown actors to play STAR WAR's major roles, and originally forbade Harrison Ford from auditioning, having worked with him on the 1973 film "American Graffiti." Ford was working as a carpenter on the set of the auditions, and was brought in by Lucas to feed lines to the actors who were auditioning, including Kurt Russell, including Kurt Russell, Nick Nolte, Christopher Walken, and Perry King. While feeding lines, Ford impressed Lucas by giving the character a mix of mercenary swagger and world weariness, and convinced the director to let him play the part."

My first Y-Wing in a long time. As I owned the original Kenner one back when it was new, I wasn’t too keen to get the TVC version from a couple of years ago, mainly because it seemed to be almost the exact same toy with only minor changes and a big part for me about vehicles as toys, is to discover new functions on them. However I love the Y-Wing and likely will end up with a TVC one anyway. The Y-Wing only got little screen time during episode IV as far as I remember. As a kid I never quite knew whether they had an additional seat for a co-pilot/gunner or not. Years later, the Star Wars Roleplaying Game brought a little more light on the subject in stating, that there are different models, some with just one seat, others with two. The original Marvel comics contained scenes with very spacious Y-Wing cockpits, similar to the Millennium Falcon’s, which of course were rather subject to artistic license than reflecting any canonicity. Anyhow, I’m not a TCW fan and don’t care much about that era but when I saw this Clone Wars version of an Y-Wing, I got hooked, as it has two seats among other interesting bits. What I particularly love is the Astromech droid slot, which has a hatch that when closed not holds the droid securely during overhead maneuvers but also makes the droid look more integrated into the vehicle. I’m not impressed with its bulkier hull and was a bit afraid that it doesn’t look enough like the original Y-Wing. And then I did this shot and only then realized (if I hadn’t before and forgot in the meantime) its McQuarrie look, with the extra dome on the cockpit. What an awesome—and very familiar—sight.
