STAR WARS INTERVIEWS: "How did you got the job to work on the "STAR WARS" movies "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi"?"

NILO RODIS-JAMERO: "I got a call. I met George Lucas at his house in San Rafael where I failed three questions: "Do you like science fiction books? Do you like science fiction movies? Do you like movies?" He hired me."

SWI: "For the "STAR WARS" movies the designs were mostly done by Joe Johnston, Ralph McQuarrie and you. Did the three of you had to work close together? If so, how did the cooperation go?"

NILO: "Joe and I shared a building, later an office. Ralph worked from home. George met with us every other week. We were never given assignments per se, just what we felt like doing within the story/outline George gave us.

We cooperated by seeing what each other did and what George responded to. Nothing was formal or said or assigned. It was all by feel."

SWI: "Can you tell something how you approached the job of art director and costume designer for "STAR WARS" and where you got your inspiration for the fantastic designs and drawings you made?"

NILO: "Inspiration is from George’s story, to come up with something ownable and unique to the property, something simple and easy to remember."

Unpacking time. Stuck with plenty of time in isolation because of “you know what”, I started opening those boxes filled with unopened figures that piled up over the years. Some of them might lie around there unopened for almost a decade now, so how can I even still say I am not a MOC/MIB collector? Well here is how: I unpack them when given the time :-p This one I bought not too long ago on the FanExpo in Toronto, probably in 2019. It was always on my list of wanted figures simply because I wanted an upgrade for the tripod blaster (with the Kenner tripod being the one I felt I needed an upgrade for). To my knowledge this is the most recent upgrade of the E-Web blaster to this day (excluding the one coming with the yet to be released Nevarro Stormtrooper). The OTC line is kind of a predecessor for the TVC line, where they tried for the first time to go Kenner retro again with the packaging. Not entirely successful if you ask me. Also the figures in this line for the most part were badly articulated and often rather hideous. This one is no exception. But one of the challenges I was keen to accept in the beginning of my toy photography “career”, was to make ugly figures look good. This one is maybe a bit easier to do as the figure for the most part hides behind the tripod blaster. It’s also noteworthy that this line produced quite a few OT figures which haven’t been upgraded since then or only until very recently (Lobot, Bib Fortuna). The blaster tripod to my disappointment is quite wobbly and it feels as if it could break easily. The figure has very basic articulation and is designed to operate the heavy blaster but otherwise looks rather dumb. The power supply thing which the original Kenner blaster featured, is sadly not featured. FILM OVERVIEW: "It’s not a difficult movie to synopsize. In fact, "STAR WARS" is straight out of "Buck Rogers" and "Flash Gordon" by way of Tolkien, "Prince Valiant," "The Wizard of Oz," "Boy’s Life" and about every great western movie ever made. Our hero, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) is a farmboy from an arid desert planet called Tatooine who suddenly finds himself – through a series of unlikely events – smack in the middle of a galactic civil war. His allies include Han Solo (Harrison Ford), a daredevil space-pilot-for-hire; Ben Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness), a mystical old gent who is the last of a group called the Jedi knights, and who knew Luke’s father when; Princess Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), who is one of the chief rebels opposing the Empire; Chewbacca, the Wookiee, an eight-foot-tall, intelligent and ferocious anthropoid; and two wisecracking robots named Artoo Deetoo and See Threepio (the former speaks android, the latter English) who practically steal the film.

The chief bad guys are Darth Vader (David Prowse) and Grand Moff Tarkin (Peter Cushing), aided by a horde of flunkies and storm troopers. They operate out of the Death Star, an enormous satellite designed specifically to go around the galaxy zapping recalcitrant planets unwilling to side with the Empire. It is clear, early in the film, that confrontations are inevitable. It’s also clear who’s going to win."
