I have been thinking about the blackening (as one does)…
…and it’s so interesting to me, the penalty Shen Qingqiu is faced with should he not decide to yeet his disciple into hell.
Account termination. Instant death. Sent directly home to his already-long-dead body, and that’s it for the villain of the piece who outright refuses his villainy. The protagonist needs a blackening for the story to continue, and Shen Qingqiu is going to provide it or get written out of the narrative. Either way, Luo Binghe is going to lose him. Either way, this is a turning point.
I wouldn’t claim that this is the intent of the penalty, but it fascinates me that the System has, potentially, backed the plotline into a corner - because Binghe still stands to be blackened even if Shen Qingqiu took the other choice.
Think about what that would look like, to him. He’s at the Immortal Alliance Conference, and everything is going wrong. He’s been outed as a demon, and not just a demon - the top tier of demon, as bad as it gets from the perspective of a righteous cultivator. His beloved teacher, the person who has been kindest to him and opened his home and heart to him, is standing there with his sword in hand, deciding what he’s going to do about what must look, to him, like a horrific betrayal. Binghe is apologizing. Binghe is begging for his life.
Shen Qingqiu hears him. Maybe it shows on his face, or in his voice, that he already knew; maybe there’s no hint at all, but Shen Qingqiu is suddenly talking quickly with an abrupt sense of urgency that Luo Binghe is having a hard time keeping up with. Telling him he’ll be wonderful - telling him he’s the best. Telling him the world will be his, with emotions cracking through that aloof mask that Binghe has never seen on Shizun’s face before, and it’s terrifying for reasons that Binghe cannot identify.
(He will, later. When he has time to think, he’ll realize it sounded like a goodbye.)
And then Shen Qingqiu is bleeding. And then Shen Qingqiu is on the ground. And then Shen Qingqiu is dead. There’s no countdown for Binghe - there’s no System, there’s no warning, there’s no answers.
Luo Binghe is a heavenly demon in the middle of a conference sabotaged by demons. Luo Binghe is alone. His fellow competing disciples are scattered, some dead or injured. The Peak Lord of Qing Jing Peak, the second in command of Cang Qiong Mountain Sect, maybe the only person he loved and who loved him back, is dead at his feet. No one will believe him if he says it isn’t his fault.
(He can’t believe it isn’t his fault.)
What choice does he have but to run? The last heavenly demon the cultivation world went up against has been sealed under a mountain for years, and one of the people responsible for that is probably looking for Shen Qingqiu already. They’ll be looking for him, too. There isn’t anywhere to hide; there isn’t any time to mourn.
There isn’t even enough time to ask why. Why again.
There is no closure waiting for him, because there is nothing to explain what happened. It just is.
It would be a different kind of blackening, certainly - less intense, probably, less of a warping, desperate thing. But how many times can one person have all the love and safety in their world torn out from under them before it starts to show? Before they just don’t allow things like love and safety to touch them, because that’s the better option?
Interesting to consider that, simply by offering the choices it did, the System rigged the story to guarantee that Luo Binghe would end up in hell (deliberate or not).
Interesting to consider that, even if Shen Qingqiu made what might have seemed like a kinder choice, there was every chance it wouldn’t have been.

Okay I'm thinking - very dangerous, I know.
Luo Binghe was away and pretty much completely out of contact with human life in the Endless Abyss. He's popping up in people's dreamscapes, sure, but it's still a dream at the end of the day and it's not an exact reflection of reality. Things he learn from people's minds still have to be taken with a grain of salt; he knows from Qing Jing's teachings that one man's truth isn't the whole truth. And from Shen Qingqiu himself, Luo Binghe knows how easily one can convince themselves that the truth isn't the real truth but a lie; delusion is a powerful force.
Anyways, what I'm saying is that Luo Binghe was away for 3 years. All sorts of things could have happened in the cultivation world! It's basically like being in a coma for three years!
You know what would be the worse year to fall into a coma? 2019.
(Can you see where I'm going with this?)
It would be freaking hilarious if Luo Binghe falls into the endless abyss in the cultivation world's equivalent of 2019, an epidemic hits human civilization, and Luo Binghe returns, none the wiser of what happened, but he's sure as fuck wondering why face veils have become such a Fashion Statement that Everyone is wearing it. By then, the illness that had struck most of the human town and cities isn't as bad so it's not so talked about - also it's been a couple years now so everyone is used to it - but it's still a Concern. Not everyone can be rich enough or well connected enough to get the special medicine from the Qian Cao peak to stave off catching the illness.
Luo Binghe is also pretty sure everyone can tell he's a demon because they keep looking and glaring at him. He's very self conscious of his skills of maintaining his glamour hiding his demonic attributes.
(No, Luo Binghe, it's because you cough and sneeze without a face covering on. And also because you aren't maintaining 2 meter social distancing rules. StoP TOUCHING anD insPecTinG eaCh FruiT and vEgetablE at hte markets omfg are you trying to spread your germs everywhere and get people sick!!! )

It's my birthday today (March 20). Here's a gift I drew for myself. It's Alistair the Hatbox Ghost and his raven servant, Abyss.
More info below
Tumblr media
I realize I haven't introduced my OC, Abyss on tumblr yet. When Alistair was a mortal, he mastered a spell where he could put souls inside of objects. His first successful attempt was putting a human soul inside of a dead raven. He named the enslaved soul Abyss.
Alistair has a personal pocket watch. Abyss was interested in it, so the man offered it as a gift, which the raven willingly accepted. This forced him to become bound to Alistair. He kept the raven chained in his study until he was murdered by his servants. As a ghost he broke the chain, which now dangles from Abyss' leg.
The pocket watch Abyss carries has many secrets. It has it's own time, which moves very slowly. When it reaches midnight, he can give the hatbox ghost his powers early. The watch allows the raven to recreate emotions and memories, which is how Alistair is able to torment his victims so realistically. And finally, the pocket watch contains part of Alistair's soul, which will play an important role later.
Abyss is undead, meaning he can interact with ghosts and mortals. He has the ability to speak but generally prefers to remain silent, a trait that Alistair is grateful for. He is a loyal, devoted soul who has no motives or goals beyond serving the man who summoned him.

Whalebone Chasm - The Abyss
Endless Ocean, Nintendo Wii
that whale fall we've seen in luminous trailers kinda reminds me of a certain endless ocean spot...
i'm so happy they're coming back, the whale fall is one of the reasons i prefer eo1's abyss to eo2's depths!

Rereading Scum Villain and there’s a part where after SQQ shoves LBH into the Endless Abyss, (and lemme tell you, that scene still hurts) he comments on how everyone thinks he’s mourning his favorite disciple. And in his head he corrects them: he’s not mourning Binghe. He knows Binghe can’t die, the narrative won’t let him (and isn’t that a fun concept to play with). He’s mourning white lotus Binghe. He’s mourning the disciple who smiled easily and shone like the sun. He’s mourning that child’s innocence and naïveté and brilliant, blinding trust, and damn if that doesn’t hit like a truck.

Sometimes you condemn children to die horrible deaths or to five years in hell, just to survive. And then you have to live with it.
Or, how did SQH feel about the Conference?
Cumplane Week day 3, crime. (I know this is not mystery genre but let me run with the prompts)

I'm back with my cambion and with a lil bit of completely useless information about him. And also a bit of my pain from the prev weekend. I usually spend it on all sorts of small sketches and other joys, but this time I decided to spend it on suffering and another attempt at animation (down bellow)…
So, Nazir is a devilish clerk whose distorted parody of a heart entirely belongs to the world of financial frauds, pyramids and other small scams aimed not so much at murder or robbery, but at spreading discord in society everyday life. His a very "fell in love with his work"-kinda guy, who picks up the same "fallen" servants (well, or those who can be persuaded to fall).

I already reblogged and forgot something, did Sy and sqh live through covid in the quarantine au? Cause that'd be even funnier, as soon as they see the signs they implement modern hand sanitizers and everything and anything. At first everyone looks at them weird but then they learn better.
If they did... would they start testing even the seafood and vegetables with covid test kits?
(No, for real that's what the Chinese government did.)
The Chinese government also pretty much locked up people (welding their front doors shut!!) into their homes for months.
I guess that would better explain how/why Shen Yuan died of food poisoning; if he couldn't leave his house to get fresh food-
