FUN RANDOM HORSE BREED TIME

Super small lil horse breed known as the Banker Horse is a semi-feral/feral horse breed that lives on the barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina!

They're not considered to be indigenous but are protected and managed by the National Park Service and currently the estimated population of these horses is 400.

They share ancestry with other Colonial Spanish horse breeds, and genetic markers indicate the share a common ancestory with both the Paso Fino and the Pryor Mountain Mustang.

While there isn't a specific source of these horses, the biggest theories is that they swam to shore when ships wrecked in the nearby shoals, in a region known as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" due to how many ships its claimed.

The Foundation for Shackleford Horses has set up a studbook for establishing the Banker horse as its own horse breed. It is registered as a critically endangered breed with the American Livestock Breeds Conversancy.

They just released the first 8 Spix's macaws back to their native range in Brazil after 22 years of them being gone from the wild, if you want to look into it!

Honestly I think the heart of this conservation story can be summed up by the very first line of the article:

"The Spix’s little blue macaw — extinct in the wild for 22 years — now flies free again in its natural habitat in Brazil, thanks to decades of research and effort by hundreds of scientists, conservation biologists, veterinarians, aviculturists and indigenous peoples."

So many people from so many different backgrounds cared enough to invest their time, money, and knowledge--often with no or very little financial compensation--to bring these birds home. Many whose names and contributions we will never know.

Eight birds were released earlier in June and 12 more are set to be released in December. This is only the beginning of the reintroduction phase of a captive breeding and reintroduction plan that has been in the making for decades. Parrots are challenging animals to reintroduce to the wild because they are so intelligent and social, but conservationists have learned a lot from both failed and successful parrot reintroductions in the past. I'm wishing all the luck in the world to those first eight birds--they have been given the best shot possible at making it in the wild.

This is one of those conservation stories that makes it all worth it. After 22 years, there will finally be little blue parrots in the Brazilian forest again.

(For those who are wondering, yes, this is what the movie Rio was based on. Rio brought an immense amount of attention and support to the Spix's macaw reintroduction efforts)

The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee is a wonderful, amazing place but wow the comments on their social media make me uncomfortable.

Gun to my head I couldn’t tell you if a jaguar and clouded leopard are sexually compatible, but probably not because clouded leopards aren’t leopards.

which is a moot point because though Russia is fairly lax on exotic animal keeping, there is no way on gods green earth those people are going to be able to find let alone afford a tame, male clouded leopard on the market.

#I think she’s a jaguar anyway I don’t recall her looking like a leopard #but I also don’t really go out of my way to look #clouded leopards are quite small so I’d certainly hope she’s at least a jaguar #A clouded leopard isn’t much bigger than a bobcat or lynx #they also aren’t in the panthera genus they’re in their own group #so #even if the people found someone illegally selling an endangered and heavily protected species #I highly doubt they would be able to breed lol #And if they posted the animal online they’d be met with MASSIVE backlash both from western conservationists and SEA communities #because this animal is internationally known to be threatened and illegal to possess

Okay last comment about the spider shit. Breeding in captivity is fine but I will say handling anything wild caught makes me want to kill myself especially when the justification is ‘well it wouldn’t survive in the wild’ like yeah. Okay, then it would die. That’s okay. Not if it’s dying bc of human impact on the environment yeah but the solution isn’t grabbing these fuckers from the wild only to sell them into the hobby yknow. Nobody said shit about this I’m just saying.

#if it can’t be sustained within the hobby through breeding then it shouldn’t exist in the hobby #and if you’re unable to procure a species due to low breeding then you should wait #aaaand if you find shit outside even if it’s like not critically endangered #consider raising it up to breeding age then letting it free so it can accomplish its life goal yknow #or find it a bitch idk

Here are some of the new arrivals.

They are Light Sussex, Rhode Island Red, Buff Sussex, Black Turkey, and Barnevelder.

Housing arrangements were temporary because we also had a trio of Gold Laced Wyandottes due plus another Barnevelder to make another trio. Having two hens takes some of the pressure off them when you're rearing in such small groups.

“Hemker Zoo and Park in Freeport has taken in an Amur Leopard and three Pallas Cats. Zoo owner and director Joan Hemker told KNSI News that having the animals helps further their goal. “By bringing these endangered species to the zoo, it will help us with our mission of teaching all generations about the importance of caring about animals that are endangered and need help.”

She says only around 100 Amur Leopards are left in the wild and around 180 in captivity. Both species are cold-weather cats native to Russia and China, making them a good fit for Minnesota’s climate. Hemker says the leopard is a large cat breed, and the others look distinct. “The Pallas Cats are smaller. We always say they resemble house cats, but they tend to look like a grumpy old man. And we think kids will really enjoy them a lot.”

The rare cats come from the Exotic Feline Breeding Compound (EFBC), a nonprofit in California that was forced to close its doors in February due to financial hardship.”

You understand me I would get the exact same feeling when the shiny commuter trains from London would pull smoothly out of the station without making a sound past the ancient trains from the valleys struggling for their lives like you just Know that new train is making some smug quip about age before beauty. You know there's train discrimination going on. Also the steam trains that only exist on back and forth seaside lines that don't even connect up to the actual railway lines are endangered species on nature reserves.

literally it goes beyond speciation at this point that railway is a society. im riding the underdog from the sewers with the rats and every time a new train passes i feel like ive just witnessed a microaggression

okay apparently im not done ranting about quarantine puppies. for the love of god to NOT get a puppy if you won't bother with training and proper socialization. i don't care if you say it'll help your mental health, i don't care if you just reeeaaaally want one, i don't care if you're only gonna get a teeny tiny toy breed, do not get a damn puppy if you won't put in the necessary work for the sake of their own and other's safety

#owning a puppy is NOT a light task #it's months of training and careful socialization and possible reactivity work #by not doing that you are not only endangering people outside the household but you're also endangering your puppy #like seriously. if you get a big powerful breed and they're terrified of the outside world? not only are you sentencing the dog to a -#- lifetime of isolation and anxiety but if they're also reactive you're risking an attack on other people which can result in state -#- mandated euthanasia #if you get a small breed who treats everything like an enemy? just like before you're forcing a horribly isolated life on your puppy but -#- you're also risking THEM getting hurt or attacked. if they get off leash and go after a car they risk getting hit. if they go after a -#- bigger dog they risk getting bitten. if they go after a person they risk getting kicked or hit and they're also still a bite risk and -#- euthanasia can still be enforced.#you can't just go “whoops! sorry! princess is just a little feisty haha” when your dog is an absolute terror in public #by getting a dog you have an obligation to both the dog and the people around you to make sure they're not a public safety hazard #and if you can't do that? pick another pet. there are lots of options out there that aren't dogs.
