Walking feet and listening ears Walking feet and listening ears Are typically achieved through creating fears. Children’s feet don’t walk evenly in a row. They run, jump and skip, don’t you know? Their ears are listening, for that is surely true. But they are listening to their heart, not obeying you. You furrow your brow and wag a scolding finger. Perhaps this will teach the child not to linger? But then they would miss the leaves rustling in the wind. Or the excitement of making of a new sparrow friend. Children’s feet were not meant to walk in a line. Their ears were not meant to “listen” all the time, To the ongoing pressures of the adult world. Instead, they would rather watch a squirrel. And don’t you wish for those days back? The times when wonder simply stops you in your tracks. It happens so much less often, once you grow old. We forget all the beautiful stories we were told, By the grasshopper, the puddle, the rainbow and the tree. But our children are still there, so let’s try to just let them be. J. Milburn “When we are able to see the simple pleasures of the world through the joyful, wondrous and open-minded eyes of a child, we begin to know how fulfillment should feel.” J. Parents and caregivers of pre-school children: Pacific Oaks Children’s School is considered the Tesla Motors of early childhood education (sans the antics of its brilliant, visionary founder). Worth checking out at least as an excellent model for learning, even if it’s not necessarily the right fit for you or your kid(s). #Repost @pacificoakscs with @get_repost ・・・ Out next Prospective Parent School Tour is coming up on Friday, March 15 from 10-11:30AM. I'm finally getting a handle on #EmergentCurriculum. They watched an educational show on #PolarBears. I read them #PolarBearPolarBearWhatDoYouSee during circle time. Then for work we colored polar bears, cut them out and pasted them on background paper. The first PB is an example of my Infant students. The 2nd is my toddler. 3rd are my Preschoolers. It's amazing how I can look at their work and see their developmental milestones. I came back to work after a few weeks off and a lot of them grew taller, look mature and some of my less verbal students were eager to be verbal and learn new words! Yassssss! We gonna be ready for kindergarten! And my Preschoolers are now working on nonPreschool work because they've surpassed the curriculum. Yasssss!! https://www.instagram.com/p/BsJjdiOlLv_/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1iwo3zeketxzu

What does play have to do with independence? In our approach to Responsive Parenting, we are influenced by Reggio Emelia and Forest School principles of learning. We do focus on independence but we do that, mostly, through free-play. We do focus on independence but we do that, mostly, through free-play. We believe play is where children first develop skills of independence. That is why child emergent learning opportunities are such a focus. The environment is also seen as the third teacher so it needs to be explorable. We believe children learn skills to be independent by providing environments that require the least amount of correction and maximum ability for exploration J. Milburn @responsive_parenting Want them to learn how to get dressed? Put some coats, hats, socks and shoes in the play area. Want them to learn how to pour their own drink? Give them cups to pour with at the sink, in the tub or outside. Want them to learn how to write? Put crayons and paper in the play area. Want them to learn how to be kind to smaller children and animals? Put some dolls and stuffies in the play area. No your child may not master these skills in this context, they will be practicing them. But how many more times does a child practice pouring when it’s done in the sink and not at the table? They pour once at the table. They pour maybe hundreds of times, when they play at the sink. This builds the muscle memory and strength needed to complete the task. #responsiveparenting #jmilburn #childledlearning #freeplay #emergentcurriculum #playislearning https://www.instagram.com/p/CVabZ0nLQyK/?utm_medium=tumblr

It’s our favorite time of year at Wild Roots Playschool. The sourgrass and miner’s lettuce are ready for picking! The Acacia tree at our Monday, Glen Canyon location is blooming! The plum trees are letting us know, spring is here in San Franciso! The children have been really interested in worms recently. With all the rain, the worms had to go to surface of the trails instead of borrowing down below us. We spent several hikes, gently picking up worms and moving them off the hiking path onto a safer area for them to be. We have been reading a lot about worms, how they help plants and the environment and how important they are! This past week, we painted cardboard worms!

I get this question often… and there are so many ways…. these are just the ones that come to mind ❤️ What are 5 things parents can do to support attachment, child development and learning? 1. Spend more time observing your child’s interests, without trying to influence them. 2. Become familiar and comfortable with the practice of reflection. 3. Focus more on connection, than teaching. 4. Spend more time outside, even if it’s just the balcony of your high rise apartment. 5. Ask your child what they would like to learn and then facilitate that, as best you can. J. I get asked often to share the research that supports responsive care and child-led, open-ended learning. These are just a few of the textbooks that support these theories. You can see it spans into middle childhood years and not just the early years. For us… the first day of my Early Childhood Education Diploma we learned that structured activities were not supportive of optimal child development. It was hard to realize our image of leading and supporting learning was going to change drastically. We all assumed it should look like a Sesame Street Episode. Once I realized how awesome this was for the kids though, I let go of my expectations and completely embraced this concept of child-led emergent curriculum. It’s life changing concept that I have transferred to the parenting world. It’s also supported by decades of research so that’s important too #responsiveparenting #jmilburn #earlychildhoodeducation #earlychildhoodeducator #emergentcurriculum #childled #childledlearning #childledplay #eceresearch https://www.instagram.com/p/CUIZXdwL1Or/?utm_medium=tumblr
