Eliza bent double, hands pressed firmly on her knees, and tried to catch her breath. Sprinting probably hadn’t been her best option, but the incessant chatter of some of the boys was irritating her, and getting away had felt like the right choice. Fighting in her first week at the school probably wasn’t the right way of going about things. No matter how tempting it might have been. Going to school, in her opinion, was a ridiculous waste of time when there were people that could teach her in the office; still, she understood that it was important to the mission.
PE was, so far, the only thing she’d found even somewhat bearable. It was familiar; a release of things she hadn’t been able to free since joining the school.
‘Careful,’ Alex said as she straightened. He ran the back of his hand across his forehead, panting only slightly from his more sensible rhythm of jogging. ‘They’ll recruit you for the cross country team before you know it.’
She laughed sarcastically as she tightened her ponytail. Alex Rider was one of those people that she would rather have avoided, and yet she’d been tasked with working with him. Not just at school – he’d been designated as her “buddy” which she found ridiculous – but also because the adults at work had thought it best they helped each other. She couldn’t deny that he was good, but that didn’t mean she had to like it.
‘I’m serious,’ he said, voice slightly lower than before as he closed the distance between them. More students were slowly joining them at the end of the course, most sinking to the floor and complaining about the whole thing. ‘They’ve been trying to get more girls involved and –’
‘Well good luck to them,’ she told him firmly, before turning on her heel and marching towards where she’d dumped her water bottle. The sooner they could get back to work instead of playing school, the better.

Y’all know I love to do grabby hands at Scriptural references and shoehorn them into Yuumori, and I thought about making some elaborate headcanon/ficlet about this, but nah. Just...imagine Sherlock and Liam’s mothers met once while they were pregnant, and for whatever reason shared a moment of bonding before going their separate ways.
(I couldn’t find definite attribution for the first painting but here’s info about the second.)
(Look at these little dudes I’m dying. 🤣)

Unexpected Partners Story Introduction
Eliza knew her life wasn’t normal, but she loved it. She’d much rather be off on an adventure than sitting in a classroom listening to some teacher telling her the importance of their subject. But, when a job comes in that requires her to have a cover story in a school, and to work with a partner who she doesn’t know and doesn’t feel like getting to know, her perfect little world feels like it’s falling apart. Throw in the fact Alex Rider is more used to civilian life than she is, and it’s a perfect mess for Eliza.
