Unlocking new science with devices that control electric power - Technology Org

Mo Mirvakili PhD ’17 was in the middle of an experiment as a postdoc at MIT when the Covid-19 pandemic hit. Grappling with restricted access to laboratory facilities, he transformed his bathroom into a makeshift lab. Arranging a piece of plywood over the bathtub to support power sources and measurement devices, he conducted a study that was later published in Science Robotics, one of the top journals in the field.

The adversity made for a good story, but the truth is that it didn’t take a global pandemic to force Mirvakili to build the equipment he needed to run his experiments. Even when working in some of the most well-funded labs in the world, he needed to piece together tools to bring his experiments to life.

“My journey reflects a broader truth: With determination and resourcefulness, many of us can achieve remarkable things,” he says. “So many people don’t have access to labs yet have great ideas. We need to make it easier for them to bring their experiments to life.”

That’s the idea behind Seron Electronics, a company Mirvakili founded to democratize scientific experimentation. Seron develops scientific equipment that precisely sources and measures power, characterizes materials, and integrates data into a customizable software platform.

By making sophisticated experiments more accessible, Seron aims to spur a new wave of innovation across fields as diverse as microelectronics, clean energy, optics, and biomedicine.

“Our goal is to become one of the leaders in providing accurate and affordable solutions for researchers,” Mirvakili says. “This vision extends beyond academia to include companies, governments, nonprofits, and even high school students. With Seron’s devices, anyone can conduct high-quality experiments, regardless of their background or resources.”

Feeling the need for constant power

Mirvakili earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering, followed by a PhD in mechanical engineering under MIT Professor Ian Hunter, which involved developing a class of high-performance thermal artificial muscles, including nylon artificial muscles. During that time, Mirvakili needed to precisely control the amount of energy that flowed through his experimental setups, but he couldn’t find anything online that would solve his problem.

“I had access to all sorts of high-end equipment in our lab and the department,” Mirvakili recalls. “It’s all the latest, state-of-the-art stuff. But I had to bundle all these outside tools together for my work.”

After completing his PhD, Mirvakili joined Institute Professor Bob Langer’s lab as a postdoc, where he worked directly with Langer on a totally different problem in biomedical engineering. In Langer’s famously prolific lab, he saw researchers struggling to control temperatures at the microscale for a device that was encapsulating drugs.

Mirvakili realized the researchers were ultimately struggling with the same set of problems: the need to precisely control electric current, voltage, and power. Those are also problems Mirvakili has seen in his more recent research into energy storage and solar cells. After speaking with researchers at conferences from around the world to confirm the need was widespread, he started Seron Electronics.

Seron calls the first version of its products the SE Programmable Power Platforms. The platforms allow users to source and measure precisely defined quantities of electrical voltage, current, power, and charge through a desktop application with minimal signal interference, or noise.

The equipment can be used to study things like semiconductor devices, actuators, and energy storage devices, or to precisely charge batteries without damaging their performance.

The equipment can also be used to study material performance because it can measure how materials react to precise electrical stimulation at a high resolution, and for quality control because it can test chips and flag problems.

The use cases are varied, but Seron’s overarching goal is to enable more innovation faster.

“Because our system is so intuitive, you reduce the time to get results,” Mirvakili says. “You can set it up in less than five minutes. It’s plug-and-play. Researchers tell us it speeds things up a lot.”

New frontiers

In a recent paper Mirvakili coauthored with MIT research affiliate Ehsan Haghighat, Seron’s equipment provided constant power to a thermal artificial muscle that integrated machine learning to give it a sort of muscle memory. In another study Mirvakili was not involved in, a nonprofit research organization used Seron’s equipment to identify a new, sustainable sensor material they are in the process of commercializing.

Many uses of the machines have come as a surprise to Seron’s team, and they expect to see a new wave of applications when they release a cheaper, portable version of Seron’s machines this summer. That could include the development of new bedside monitors for patients that can detect diseases, or remote sensors for field work.

Mirvakili thinks part of the beauty of Seron’s devices is that people in the company don’t have to dream up the experiments themselves. Instead, they can focus on providing powerful scientific tools and let the research community decide on the best ways to use them.

“Because of the size and the cost of this new device, it will really open up the possibilities for researchers,” Mirvakili says. “Anyone who has a good idea should be able to turn that idea into reality with our equipment and solutions. In my mind, the applications are really unimaginable and endless.”

Tras llamar lo que hacemos aquí una "farsa" y un "engaño", se ha dignado a venir si la dejábamos en paz.

Pero queridas lectoras, supongo que estaréis ansiosas de más. ¿Queréis saber más de nuestras competidoras? ¡GRITAD SI QUERÉIS MÁS!

¡Voy a suponer que lo habéis hecho! Primero tenemos a Trish Germanium, "Madame Chispas", muchas veces campeona de nuestras queridas competiciones de lucha libre. Pero que sea lucha libre no significa que esos poderosos músculos suyos no sean efectivos, no, ni mucho menos. Esto no es como esas competiciones actuadas de las humanas, ¡esto es real!

En nuestros combates queremos realidad, y siempre pedimos a nuestras luchadoras que se esfuercen a fondo. ¿Qué más nos da si se pierden brazos o piernas? ¡Somos inmortales y podemos regenerarnos! Y así mostramos al mundo cómo nos las gastamos las maleables. Hay quien llamará a esto "propaganda", y frente a tales acusaciones sólo puedo decir un rotundo "NO… hablaré esto sin mi abogada".

Volviendo a Madame Chispas, ¡es la portadora del Núcleo de la Electricidad! ¡Y no podría ser mejor, ya lo veis! ¡Sus combates son verdaderos espectáculos de luces, poses y golpes fulminantes! ¡Desde que apareció en el ring con su hermano, los contagios voluntarios han ido en agudo aumento!

Se dice en susurros que es la hija de Charlotte Germanium, la general revolucionaria. ¡Y no sé por qué! ¡Si es verdad! Ella y su hermano fueron acogidos en uno de mis centros al quedarse sin su madre, y dicen que se tuvieron que transmutar para ganarse la vida. Pero tras habiéndolas conocido desde enanas, puedo confirmar que su madre estaría orgullosa.

¡Ahora, Beatriz Papil! Realmente no tiene nombre de luchadora más que Bea, ¡creerá que esta es la única vez que luchará! Como dije antes, ¡esta chica sabe de todo, desde los latigazos propios del Fervor hasta las técnicas de compresión de BiuTau!

De hecho, parece que hace poco fue en busca del maestro Az, Núcleo de la Putrefacción, uno de los seres más antiguos de nuestro planeta, patrón de los plasmoides tipo 2, y creador de un tipo de arte marcial basado en la modificación corporal extrema y criaturas extintas. ¡Viendo esos aguijones, seguro que es una de sus mejores discípulas!

Viendo ahora alguna de las entradas recientes, alguien ha hablado aquí de las Cinco Puertas, ¿no? ¡Es uno de los centros de reclutamiento de las Hermanas! Bea es una de las encargadas, la de la Puerta de las Mariposas. Vale que tendrá algún rasgo de mariposa, pero miradla, ¿a quién se le ocurrió llamar así a la sala de la abeja?

En la corta entrevista que le he hecho, dice estar en busca de su siguiente reto. ¡Así que ya sabéis! ¡Si conocéis a alguien dispuesta a aumentar el ya amplio repertorio de Bea, sentíos libres de llamarme a mí o a ella!

A la izquierda, está Trish riéndose mientras ataca, a pesar de haber fallado… ¡pero si os fijáis, está usando sus brazos y piernas para liberar una fuerte corriente! Y mirad ese cinturón, con mi cara en él. ¡Qué bien salí!

A la derecha otra vez, tras los rayos, hay alguien, con algo de metal en el ojo, cuernos, barba y capa roja oscura… ¿Será el maestro Az animando a su estudiante?

I know some people would love to be crushed between them. After her previous fights, all of them with crushing victories in her favor, will she have a proper duel?

IN THE OTHER CORNER, OUR NEW FIGHTER, SISTER OF SAINT LENA’S CONGREGATION, THE PIERCING, THE DIRECT, BEATRIZ PAPIIIIIIIL! After a lot of convincing and bargaining she has finally come! The best hand to hand fighter in the Congregation, versed in several martial arts and taught by the one and only master Az! After calling what we do here a “farce” and a “hoax”, she has deigned to come if we left her alone.

I will guess you have done so! First we have Trish Germanium, “Madame Sparks”, several times winner of our loved wrestling competitions. But this being wrestling doesn’t mean those muscles are just for show, no, no. This isn’t like those staged competitions human have, this is real!

In our battles, we want realism, and we always ask our fighters to give it their all here. And what if someone loses an arm or a leg? We are inmortal and can regenerate! And this is how we show the world how us malleables do our thing. There will always be someone calling this “propaganda”, and my answer is always a rotund “I WON’T TALK ABOUT THIS AGAIN… without my lawyer”.

Returning to Madame Sparks, she is the bearer of the Electricity Core! And she couldn’t be better, you see! Her combats truly are shows full of lights, posing, and shocking strikes! Ever since she appeared on the ring with her brother, voluntary infections have seen a sharp rise!

It’s said in whispers that she is the daughter of Charlotte Germanium, revolutionary general. And I don’t know why! It’s completely true! She and her brother were sheltered in one of my centers when their mother left us, and it’s said that they had to transmute themselves to make a living. But after knowing them since they were little, I can say her mother would be proud.

Now, Beatriz Papil! She doesn’t really have a fighter name outside of Bea. She might think this is the only time she will fight for us! As I said before, this girl knows a lot of things, from the whipping style of BiuTau fighting to the compression techniques of the Fervor!

In fact, it seems not long ago she went on a journey to find master Az, the Putrefaction Core, one of the oldests beings in our planet, patron of type 2 plasmoids and creator of a martial arts type based on extreme corporal modification and extinct creatures. Looking at those stingers, I am sure she is one of his best pupils!

Seeing some of the recent entries here, someone has talked about the Five Doors, right? It is one of the Sisters’ recruitment centers! Bea is one of the employees there, the one in tha Door of the Butterflies. I know, she may have some butterfly trait, but look at her, who came up with that name for the bee’s room?

In the short interview she gave me, she told me she’s looking for her next challenger. So remember! If you know someone able to expand her already ample repertoire, feel free to call either her or me!
