On your series “All Stories Have Monsters”, you have an interesting, unique take on Joe and Nicky and their dynamic, with you exploring a Nicky free to stray and do as he whishes and a Joe who conveniently only has eyes for Nicky. And it hurts my heart to imagine Joe in such a seemingly unbalanced, unequal relationship. In this ‘verse Joe comes across as this almost otherworldly man, locked in the role of the perfect partner, endlessly selfless, willing to share Nicky with anyone Nicky may desire / love while Joe remains faithfully devoted, his world revolving around Nicky (and Nicky only), “incapable” (???) of falling in love with anyone else, not having other lovers to turn to like Nicky does. It’s such an advantageous / favorable situation for Nicky, with Joe making all the concessions without clear reciprocity and only Nicky reaping the benefits / rewards of their open arrangement, besides never having to guess at Joe’s loyalty, never having to share whatever there is of Joe’s affection / desire / thoughts and feelings, never having to face any man / woman who would challenge him for Joe’s love.

Ok, so, I understand where you’re coming from, and part of this critique is completely valid. You’re right to call out that I’ve centered Nicky a lot in that series, at the expense of exploring Joe’s perspective. That’s something I’ve been thinking about, recently, and something I will try to do better about in my fic in general.

As for the rest of this... I think you meant this comment as a good-faith expression of your thoughts about this series, and I appreciate that. I’m going to try and respond as clearly and as kindly as I can, so please don’t think I’m attacking you or calling you ignorant or anything like that.

The conclusions you’ve come to are based on a lot of assumptions about what healthy relationships look like, and those assumptions are almost completely wrong. Now, I don’t know anything about you or your life, so I’m not going to make any guesses about your experience with relationships or polyamory, but, if you grew up in generally the same culture I did, I know that you’ve been fed a lot of ideas about compulsory monogamy and How Relationships Work, and internalised those ideas as fact. As someone who is in a loving, committed, open marriage, I can tell you most of those ideas are, at best, bullshit.

The thing is, people experience romantic and sexual attraction in different ways. You’re on Tumblr and you follow me, so I’m going to assume that’s not a new concept for you. In practice, what this means is that people who are in a relationship also experience love and desire diferently. Even if you have two people who are monogamous, allosexual, and alloromantic, their individual needs and appetites are going to be different by virtue of the fact that they are different people. This doesn’t mean one of them loves the other more or one of them enjoys sex more; it just means that some of the things they need and want in a relationship are going to be different, because that’s how people work.

The other thing that I really want to emphasize is that relationships don’t come with scoreboards, and keeping score in a relationship isn’t helpful or healthy. That doesn’t mean there doesn’t need to be balance and equity, but the sort of one-for-one reciprocity you’re talking about isn’t balance. For instance, I’ve been sick for the past few days, and my wife has been taking care of me. Does that mean that she gets to take time off from her responsibilities to let me take care of her so we’re even? Of course not. We take care of each other when we’re sick because we made a commitment to do exactly that. For added fun, my wife and I have different health problems and different temperaments, so we tend to get sick in different ways and need different things. Which means that me taking care of her looks different than her taking care of me. Does that mean our relationship is unbalanced? Nope. It means we’re different people with different needs, and part of being married means meeting each other’s needs.

So you’re probably sitting there thinking that being sick and having sex are two totally different things. Except that... they’re not, not really. Sex is one possible aspect of a relationship, just like dealing with illness, doing the dishes, going out, sharing finances, et cetera, ad nauseum. Sex isn’t a special, magic thing that has it’s own set of rules; it’s a thing people do together, sometimes there are emotions involved, sometimes not. The real point, here, is that different people have different needs and wants when it comes to sex, just like everything else, and every sexual relationship is unique, just like every friendship or romantic relationship is unique.

So what does that mean for an open relationship? Among other things, it means that one person sleeping with someone else doesn’t mean their partner needs to sleep with someone else to make things even. It means that how a person feels about having sex with their partner is not necessarily how they feel about having sex with people who aren’t their partner. It means that reciprocity and keeping score are just as bullshit when it comes to sex as they are in other parts of a relationship.

Now, let’s talk about Joe and Nicky and polyamory in All Stories Have Monsters.

Again, you’re right: I haven’t given as much time to Joe as a character as he deserves, and I’m working on that. But if you’ve read all 89,000 words of that series, to date, and you came away with the impression that Nicky doesn’t absolutely and utterly adore Joe with his entire being, then I need to re-assess my abilities as a writer.

The subtext of The House in Sicily is that Nicky built a mansion out of love for Joe. Ok, you’re probably thinking, but why does Nicky get to fuck around and Joe doesn’t? The simple answer is that Nicky wants to and Joe doesn’t, not because one of them is more faithful than the other, but because they are different people who experience attraction differently.

It’s first implied and then plainly stated that Joe in this series is demisexual, which doesn’t AT ALL mean that he’s not capable of falling in love with or being attracted to anyone other than Nicky; it just means, in this case, that he needs to have a strong romantic connection with someone before he might want a sexual relationship. You can imagine a lot of reasons that might be tricky to navigate with the complexities of immortal life, and since he already has a passionate, satisfying relationship with the love of his life, there’s not much reason for him to look for anyone else.

Then there’s Nicky, who pursued sexual relationships with other men despite believing it was a sin, and who, like Joe, had never been in love before. For Joe, romantic love and sex are necessarily linked, but for Nicky they’re not. Sex is something Nicky enjoys doing; he definitely PREFERS doing it with Joe, but that doesnt mean it’s not fun with other people. Add to this the fact that Nicky having sex with someone else turns Joe on, and Nicky has at least one very compelling reason to seek out casual partners and few complications in doing so.

The thing with Booker... Honestly, that’s another entire novel of analysis, so I’m not going to get into it here.

The point is: having a committed, balanced relationship doesn’t mean having all the same needs and desires as your partner. It means, among other things, recognizing that you and your partner(s) have different needs and desires and making sure that everyone is fulfilled and satisfied as individuals. In a case where there is a primary couple with an open arrangement, it also means trusting that you and your partner are each other’s top priority when it comes to love and sex. Joe and Nicky have different sexualities, but they’re absolutely, unequivocally devoted to each other. Whether or not they have sex with other people doesn’t change that.

Does that make sense? I hope that makes sense.

Even before they walked out of the cab, Dick was already hearing them from across the street, he wided his eyes amazed and you just laughed at him squeezing his hand. It's been so long since you all had been together. The last time was your goodbye party to BLudhaven and since then so much had changed. You give Dick one last look before knocking on the door and he took a deep breath. Dick Grayson, the same man who fought criminals and aliens, nervous about normal people. He honestly was a mess without his mask.

The door is open by a woman and a baby in her arms, both of the ladies smile to each outher and let out a little squirm. Oh boy he's gonna pass out. You once rolled your eyes at him and he made that stupid "What Can I Do" convinced face. "He truly know" "I'm sure he does, you look way to healthy for someone who doesn't even know how to make your own rice" you hear one of your cousin's say "That's true, but she won't admit. I caught her once eating burn cookies just to prove a point" they all laugh with him while you punch his arm "No, no no. Both of you are guests. We don't see our Y/N since forever, you need to socialize. Go outside, go go" your Aunt kicked you guys out. Dick still laughing of relieve "I'm glad you're feeling it." you say holding him by his arm carefully. He nodds "I love this. I really do" "Good, now let's see how you do in the real world." she opens the backdoor and he sees his biggest fear come true. Her parents. His smiles fades away a little and you laugh by his side. Your mother is at the main table with her family and your father surround by his friends on the other corner. "MA!" You sign to your mother who jumps across the table and jumps hugging you tightly. She brushs through your hair and place a kiss in your forhead. They chat a bit and her mother looks at Dick from head to toe "Hi I'm- "Dick Grayson, the boyfriend" she says serious "You've been discussed before" He looks at you from the corner of his eyes and you just give a grin. He helds a breath "I'm so glad to welcome you to this family!" her wide smile is exactly like yours and he feels completely comfortable now. They hug and this time doesn't screw up with the double cheek kiss. "Oi dad" the girl says to the man that appeared in front of her. He comes serious in your direction and does the same reception as your mother... But then he turned to Dick Grayson "Evening Sir..." he stand his hand "I'm Dick" "Yes you are, boy" his heart literally is ripped out of his heart. Okay, almost literally. Oh god, the situation is not worse thankfully because his brothers weren't around. "Mi Amado!" your mother snitches him poking him with her arm. "I'm kidding! Jesus, why are you all so tense today!" he laughs at them finally shaking his hands, Dick hears your exhale in relieve "It's from Richard, right? Or your parents were just really mean?" "Dad!" it's now your turn to snitch. Dick looks at you saying that it was ok. He puts his best smile to your father "It's really nice to finally meeting you sir" "Yeah boy, nice to put a face on the name. Nice tie by the way" "Oh, thanks. I just didn't kn-" Dick sense you pushing his arm with a frown face, looking back to her father he sees his holding a smirk to him. Damn it. "Enjoy the party my loves" Your mother says dragging your father away. Dick turns to you with insanely open eyes freaking out "Dick? Dick, look at me" you hold his arms trying to bring some sense out of him "I knew it! I freaking knew it I'm too overdressed oh god. I feel such a brat now, when you said family party I immediately thought that- "Richard Grayson, you're making a scene over nothing" you cups his hands trying to calm his breathing "You're just fine. The tie is fine. Everything is fine" "He doesn't like me. I'm sorry" he says with pouty lips "What are you sorry for?" "I know how much this means to you, I'm sorry" "Richard Grayson, are you having second thoughts?" you say playfull to him "Because since I can remember, you're dating me, not my father" "Yes but" "But what? They have all kind of setors, from small assaults to huge crime organization. For them to find out their way in to those things, it's where I step in." you smile proud of him, for a come up job he sure knew how to handle himself "But isn't that Bat's gang job?" You chocked so hard on your food that you needed help to come back to your state, sitting straight in his chair, Dick kept going "I never met them but surely they help through clues and catching most of them" "And where did you stud to become this?" your mother kindly asks trying to change the topic "Oh, I've been from all parts of the world." he says casually to not bringing up the whole Batman stuff again "Spent too long away and when I came back, I met your daughter" he looks at you not being able to gush over her. You blushed a bit, he would so mock you later "Oh, the typical white rich boy" your dad interfered the both of you again "Dad... I did not came here so you could make fun from him." you say now seriously than ever. You told Dick once of how much you and your father fight and discuss this way. "You don't know him" Dick kept quiet as he continued "C'mon Y/N it's a joke okay? Did Bludhaven made you all that serious?" you roll your eyes at him "Is because I know you. You know what? This is why I never bring anyone here! He wanted me to have the life that my parents always wanted for me, and sure, we don't agree in everything but I see now how much we development from here." People have a very hard time realizing that a role in a movie is just that and not your true personality.” Madonna could never be taken for a loser. It would begin back in her home state of Michigan. “I’m from Bay City, Pontiac, Rochester, Detroit, all over the place,” she says. Her father worked in the automobile industry; her mother died of cancer when Madonna was seven, leaving eight children behind. Madonna - actually Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone - not twenty-four, is the oldest girl. She has two older brothers. “My father couldn’t take care of us all,” she says. “We split up, lived with friends, relatives. Then we got a housekeeper, but we were a wild bunch; we’d go through one after another and hated them all.” When she was ten, her father married one of the family’s housekeepers. “We had to start calling her Mom, and it was really hard to accept her in a position of authority,” she says. “All of us had a chip o our shoulder because of what we’d been through. But I was a pretty strong little girl, and in a way, it forced me to stand on my own two feet, not rely on anyone.”

After attending Catholic elementary schools, madonna went to public high school in Rochester. Describing herself at the time, she says “I was pretty snotty. Outgoing but in a rebellious way. There were two factions - the hippies, who had long hair and skipped class, and the jocks, who went to all the games and got good grades. I enjoyed athletics but hated the mentality of the jocks. And i hated the lazy, spaced out potheads.”

She always dressed in a striking fashion. “A lot of that had to do with my having to wear school uniforms for so long,” she explains. “You tend to do anything you can to look different.” Her parents used to tell her she dressed immodestly. “I weasn’t allowed to wear tight pants or short skirts,” she says, “so I’d wear one thing out of the house, then change when I got to school.” She favored bright colors, short skirts, and high heels. “i’d go from looking like a real bum to looking like a real tart,” she says with a laugh. She never dated anyone for more than a couple weeks: “Guys didn’t understand me and always ended up making me feel stupid.”

From the time she was twelve, Madonna took dance lessons. ballet class became the most important thing in her life. “It was like stepping into a fantasy world,” she recalls. “My teacher, Christopher Flynn, was really great - he told me that I was beautiful and talented and that I could really be something. He made me feel it was all right that I didn’t fit in at school.”

Like many performers, Madonna has had an inner drive to perform ever since she can remember. As part of a large family, she was obsessed with getting attention. As a child, she’d dance on a tabletop, mimic performers on TV. During her senior year in high school, she participated in a dance program run by a Detroit college. She would go to school in the morning, then drive to Detroit to take class and watch rehearsals.

“that really helped me get through school,” she declares passionately. “I felt I couldn’t be bothered with these peons in my class who were going nowhere - I knew what I was doing. I had purpose!”

And purpose has never left her. After she came to New York, she won an Alvin Ailey American Dance Company scholarship and studdied four months with the company. Afterward, she returned to Michigan for several months to attend the University of Michigan on a fine arts scholarship, only to find herself drawn to New York again as if by a magnet. She then spent a couple of years as part of the Pearl Lange Dance Company.

“From the minute you saw her, you knew she was marvelous material,” recalls the distinguished American dancer-choreographer Pearl lange. “She had a fir. Whatever she did, she had an imagination that could enlarge the moment.”

But dancing wasn’t enough. “I thought that was what I had always wanted,” Madonna says. “But you kill yourself for years and for what? There’s very little money, I wanted to sing!” (Lang also notes, “She wasn’t very disciplined. If she couldn’t get it right away, she had a hard time making herself work for somthing.”) Madonna began to audition for Broadway musicals. “My dance training gave me an incredible sense of performance onstage, enabling me to reach out to an audience. I have great control over my body, and it’s something I can use the rest of my life.”

Through a chance audition for a job as a back-up singer and dancer by a French singing star, she was discovered by a French recording company, brought to Paris, and groomed for stardom several years ago. Provided with an apartment, a maid and a chauffered car, she took dance and voice lessons and began learning French. But that executives that sponsored her were caught up in other projects; they urged her to think about her musical direction, but she didn’t have the slightest idea of what to do. She didn’t play an instrument, had never written a song - although she did begin writing lyrics for the first time for want of anything else constructive to do. Madonna’s frustration at the time still echoes in her voice.

“I had been working like mad in New York, where there’s a rush-rush lifestyle; in Paris, they take breaks all day. They were taking me around to fancy restaurants, saying, ‘Look what we found in New York, isn’t she wonderful? We’re going to make her a star!’” But she began to feel like a bird in a gilded cage. “I turned into a rebellious little kid,” Madonna says. “Every time I complained, they gave me more money. But my idea of success is feeling I’ve accomplished something personally.” Her eyes glitter. “they weren’t making my needs their most important thing, and I really demanded that!”

Back to New York she went, where she soon fell in love with a guitar player with a group called Breakfast Club. Madonna began hanging around the band. She told her boyfriend, she recalls, “’You’ve got to teach me to play an instrument, to write songs. I want to be a singer!’ He just stuck a guitar in my hand and started me on basic chord progressions.” She began to write songs “about pain and lonliness and love, everything I was feeling.” Her feelings have always been close to the surface. “I was an incredibly emotional child,” she recalls. “Always crying. Stayed in my room and cried for hours. Now I have tragedies on different levels, but I still feel the same pain.”

Possessed with curiosity about everything connected with the music scene, Madonna secretly taught herself how to play the drums. When the band’s drummer quit, she offered herself in his stead. During one club date, she was permitted to take her guitar up front onstage and sing one song, I Was Born to Be a Dancer. It won her a standing ovation. With a taste of applause, there was no way Madonna would stay in back with the drums. Up front or nothing! She began working with Steve Bray, a musician she knew from Ann Arbor, and writing songs. During those days, she was living from hand to mouth, sleeping on a slab of foam rubber on the floor of a studio where bands rehearsed and equipment was stored.

“I had the drums for a headboard and the amplifiers at my feet,” she jokes. The bathroom was in a hall; there was no heat in the winter, She ate on a dollar a day - cheese popcorn, yogurt. “I wore the same thing every day,” she remembers. “I couldn’t wait to take a bath. Looking back, it was fun, but at the time, it was miserable. There were a lot of losers in that place - you’d hear them rehearse the worst music in the world, the same stuff over and over again. They never got better, and nothing was interesting. I knew I had to get out of there. I knew I was going to make it - and that’s what got me through!”

As she kept developing her own style, Madonna turned more and more fro rock and roll to the Motown rhythm-and-blues sound she had loved as a child - occassionally, listeners would think they were hearing a black singer. Through a friend who knew the music-club scene, she began hanging out with club dusc jokeys. She soon realized that record-company scouts frequented the clubs to check out new talent, and not too long afterward, she gave her demo tape to a deejay at a trendy New York club, Danceteria. “He said, ‘Wow, this is great!’” Madonna recalls. And Sire Records soon agreed. “That’s how I got my record deal,” she says. “On my own, without a manager or a band or any of the other things I thought I needed.”

That was three years ago, These days, Madonna lives in a loft in lower Manahttan. Her boyfriend is a record producer who travels frewquently. When he’s away and she’s not at work on her music, she reads, she watches movies, and goes to a health club to swim. Once a year, she goes back to Michigan. “I call my father,” she says, to whom she dedicated her first album, “but he could never really understand what I was doing. Things,” she adds, with a long, piercing look, “are better now.”

I am currently 29 years old and just recently married. I have come to a decision I have to make on my health insurance. I am not planning on getting pregnant for at least the next 2 years. So do I or do I not take the maturnity insurance. It would be a differance of 140.00 a month! Crazy since I am on the pill trying not to get pregnant. But it is still possible to get pregnant on the pill, but highly unlikely. So my question is do I take it to be on the safe side or waive it until it gets closer to that time.
