Zoetermeer is voor zo’n 200 eerstejaars hbo-studenten van De Haagse Hogeschool de plek om te studeren. Aan de introductieweek doen dit jaar voor het eerst ook 24 eerstejaars mbo-studenten van mboRijnland mee die in de Dutch Innovation Factory studeren. Introductieweek studenten Vrijdag 1 september sloten de studenten traditiegetrouw hun introductieweek af met een bezoek aan de Raadzaal in het stadhuis waar zij door burgemeester Michel Bezuijen en wethouder Marijke van der Meer (onderwijs) werden verwelkomd. “Dit jaar verwelkomen we in onze stad alle eerstejaars hbo- én mbo-studenten die in de DIF gaan studeren.” vertelt burgemeester Bezuijen. “De Haagse Hogeschool en mboRijnland bieden innovatieve IT-opleidingen die uitstekend passen bij een IT-stad als Zoetermeer. De introductieweek is ook een mooie gelegenheid om kennis te maken met de stad waarin je gaat studeren.” Een grote groep van hen – herkenbaar aan de blauwe T-shirts – ging na het bezoek aan het stadhuis richting Adventure Valley en de Dutch Innovation Factory voor een afsluitend feest. Studeren in het Dutch Innovation Park De nieuwe leerlingen volgen in de Dutch Innovation Factory een hbo-studie HBO-ICT of Applied Data Science & Artificial Intelligence bij De Haagse Hogeschool of de mboRijnland-opleiding Expert IT systems and devices Security. Studies met een uitstekend toekomstperspectief; er is op de arbeidsmarkt veel vraag naar IT-talent. Zoetermeer biedt studenten een bijzonder onderwijsconcept: op deze campus, te midden van innovatieve ondernemingen en een actieve community, hebben zij direct contact met het bedrijfsleven en leren ze onder meer van praktijkopdrachten van ondernemers.

The Dutch glossary

You know, I decided to point out some Dutch things mentioned in I’d cry a river just for you, for my non-Dutch readers.

1. Silence - Falsettos

“"Station Kralingse Zoom. Busstation Erasmus Universiteit. Bus station Erasmus University. Station Kralingse Zoom."”

Welcome to this post. The story starts in a metro, so I suppose this post also starts there! I actually had the metro map in my ‘notes’ section of my Word file to make sure that the few trips that they take make sense.

I actually passed this station when I was riding the metro last December and I hastingly wrote down what the announcer said. As I mention in a later chapter, I edited this first chapter when I came home. Imagine me transcribing this in my private Discord server.

"He almost slams his OV-kaart against the RET portals.”

OV-kaarten are our public transport cards. The yellow ones are personal, so bound to a certain person. The Netherlands has a lot of regional transport services, but the OV-kaart works everywhere in the country (and also apparently for German busses and trains that drive around in the Netherlands, cool!). RET is the public transport system for Rotterdam. It covers the bus, tram, metro en Fast Ferry. Since I don’t live in Rotterdam, I almost never use RET’s services.

“Sanders Law Library is the library of the Erasmus School of Law.”

Yeah, I don’t have much to say here. I used Erasmus as the university of this story, but I’ve never actually been here myself, not even on an Open Day. I wasn’t interested, because I low-key dispise Rotterdam and Erasmus has the rule that you need to get all 60 EC in your first year to pass your BSA. Hell no.

“Blaine gets his laptop and his Dopper (...)”

Doppers are these plastic bottles, originally created in the Netherlands. A lot of students have them and people rest their chin on the lids during class. I joked that Blaine’s integrated cause he bikes to university, but no, owning a Dopper is the true Dutch thing!

3. Obligation - Legally Blonde

““Yannick’s got a friend who lives in Kralingen-Oost.””

I’ve never been to Kralingen-Oost, so I don’t know how accurate the photo I found on Google Images represents all of the neighbourhood, but I did read several times that it’s one of the wealthiest parts of the city.

7. Rhythm - Heathers

“(...) Bella shows up on Blaine’s doorstep with a bottle of cheap AH huismerk wine (...)”

AH huismerk is the cheap brand of Albert Heijn, a Dutch supermarket.

“TOFFLER is this underground club close to the Stadshuis.”

TOFFLER is explained in the story. I walked past it on that day I visited Rotterdam and my cousin said that it’s a great nightclub, so I added it. Stadhuis is the Dutch word for city hall.

9. Fan - In the Heights

“He walks down the Lijnbaan, shivering.”

You can really see that I wrote this chapter after I visited Rotterdam, because I walked down the Lijnbaan as well. It’s a busy shopping street. Its name literally translates to ‘line path’.

“When Blaine passes the Bijenkorf (...)”

De Bijenkorf is a department store and it’s seen as relatively luxurious. Bijenkorfs are scattered around the country, but yeah the one pictured above is the Bijenkorf in Rotterdam. I’ve never been there before. I’ve only been to Bijenkorf Maastricht. Bijenkorf is also a Dutch word and it translates to beehive.

“Blaine has an apartment on the seventh floor of the Markthal with a view on the city centre.”

Blaine’s apartment is a real thing. De Markthal is an indoor market (I mean, it translates to ‘market hall’) filled with foodstands and restaurants. It’s relatively new. I’ve only been to the city centre of Rotterdam twice. Once, last December, and once when the Markthal was just finished. It’s an astounding building. De Markthal was the only part of the centre that I saw that day, so when I passed it again in December and I saw that it had apartments, I knew Blaine had to live there.

11. Demonstrate - Everybody's Talking About Jamie

“(...) he’s so happy that he got paired with Bella during the Eurekaweek.”

Eurekaweek is the name given to the introduction week of the Erasmus University.

“Blaine, Bella and Adeola are walking through the Koopgoot, doing some Christmas shopping.”

De Koopgoot is another shopping street of Rotterdam. I also visited it for the first time in December and that’s when I learnt that locals bitch about the terrible stairs. I can see why. Koopgoot translates to ‘buy gutter’.

“(...) Bella says excitedly and she points towards the KKEC.”

De KKEC also gets explained in the story. It’s a fun store. I first saw it in December and it had a lot of plush cats in the shop window. Blaine calls the stuff they sell hebbedingetjes. I think the best translation for that would be tchotchkes.

““Or late Sinterklaas?””

Sinterklaas is a national holiday that spans from end November to December 5th, pakjesavond (evening of parcels). De Sint travels to the Netherlands from Spain and he gives kids presents if they’ve been nice. Kids can place one of their shoes at a fireplace for de Sint with gifts, usually cookies, poems and carrots for de Sint’s horse, and the day after there’ll be a gift in the shoe. On pakjesavond, it’s the big gift day where kids get a shit ton of gifts in one go. Other traditions include a chocolate letter, with the first letter of your name, oranges, foamy candies, marzipan, and pepernoten, a certain kind of cookie (?) that gets eaten during this time.

“(...) he didn’t realise his mistake until they passed the Etos.”

Etos is a drugstore chain that can be found everythere in the country.

13. Arrow - 35MM: A Musical Exhibition

“Heck yeah, lekker met de meiden worteltaart!”

This is a lyric from the song Lekker met de meiden from MEROL. It’s a joke song, but also a legit bop. The lyric translates to ‘hanging with the ladies carrot cake’.

““Utrecht Centraal is the biggest train station in the Netherlands, since the city is the center of the country.”

Utrecht Centraal is indeed the hub of the country, so it felt fitting to add it.

““De NS is kut. Remember that, Blaine. That’s one of the most important sentences of the Dutch language!””

I needed someone to bitch about our trains. Like I said, public transport in the Netherlands is localised, and same goes for our railway system, but apart from local railway, we also have a collective one, the NS, Nederlandse Spoorwegen, which literally translates into Dutch Railway. Dutch people make a lot of memes about delays.

“Nijmegen is nothing like Rotterdam. Even the Mariënburg, which some call the Nijmeegse equivalent of the Koopgoot has nothing on the real one. But the city is lovely and the vibe is different. The five of them walk towards the Grote Markt and Femke is talking a lot.”

The next two ‘present’ chapters take place in Nijmegen, which is the capital city of the province Gelderland. De Mariënburg is a shopping street and de Grote Markt is the central plaza of the city centre. There are a lot of terraces.

“Als je een frikandelbroodje plant, het begiet met een blikje energy, dan krijg je een 5 havoër genaamd Mitchell. That’s a very important lesson to know!”

I don’t even know how to properly explain this. If you know, you know.

“(...) Blaine learns that Femke went to university in this city (...)”

Radboud Universiteit/Nijmegen was another possible setting for this fic, but I chose Erasmus/Rotterdam in the end. I decided to add this small reference to it anyway.

“(...) Femke points towards some big stuffed bears in the shop window of the Hema (...)”

De HEMA is another Dutch store. HEMA only sells its own products and they sell a lot. It ranges from clothes, to their own supermarket, to stationary stuff, to beauty supplies, to curtains... it’s a lot. Hema (or HEMA, I think both styles work) is currently trying to branch out internationally under the name ‘Hema Amsterdam’, which is funny, because Hema is not limited to Amsterdam.

“Blaine grabs Kurt’s arm and they turn the corner. Luckily, there’s an alley next to a phone accessory shop.”

Huh, turns out it’s not exactly next to a phone accessory shop. There’s a glasses shop in between! Might fix that. Or not. Whatever.

17. Global - Six

““Station Oosterflank. Vergeet niet om uit te checken. Station Oosterflank.”

Bella lives eight metro stops away, in the Prins Alexander area.”

I’ve never been here before. I found this place on a website for student housing in Rotterdam. I didn’t know what other photo to use of Prins Alexander, so unlike Kralingen-Oost, have a view from above!

“Honestly, all Blaine wanted to do was buy an AH saucijzenbroodje at the Albert Heijn in the Markthal. De Martkhal is an impressive building and a lot of tourist want to see the inside and its Tijdtrap, and this includes the Hummel-Hudsons.”

Some returns! I’ve already mentioned AH (Albert Heijn) and Markthal. Saucijzenbroodje is made of bladerdeeg (a puff pastry) shaped as a bread filled with a sausage. It’s kind of wack to hear that bladerdeeg is called a pastry in English, cause it’s a sort of dough. Anyway, it’s a loved snack here. The photo shows a saucijzenbroodje (bottom) and a frikandelbroodje (top). De Tijdtrap, which translates to ‘stairs of time’, is part of the Markthal interior.

19. Core - Hamilton

““Oh, is there a nice coffee shop around? I saw some coffeeshops in Rotterdam!”

Kurt puts his hand on Carole’s shoulder. “Carole, that’s not… that’s not for coffee.”

Blaine quickly nods. “Don’t go there, Carole.””

For the ones unaware, a Dutch coffeeshop is where you can legally buy weed. You might’ve heard of it before. I don’t know where the picture above was taken, but it went viral, because this was the day before lockdown. Everyone rushed to a coffeeshop for some last-minute weed. The government then allowed the coffeeshops to stay open like restaurants: take away only.

“Carole grips Blaine’s arm and she leads him to the Kroket Loket, one of the ‘market stalls’ that’s also a restaurant.

(...)

“Well, a kroket sounds nice,” Burt sounds defeated.”

I’ve also never been here. I looked up the stalls in the Markthal and I just loved this name. It’s a nice rhyme (The rhyme fails in English: the kroket booth). Een kroket is a Dutch fried snack. It’s filled with a creamy meat sauce. I don’t really know how else to explain it.

“He lives relatively close to Rotterdam Centraal”

Unlike Blaine and Bella, I didn’t use an existing place for Kurt to live. All I know is that he lives close to the train station, Rotterdam Centraal.

“Femke’s gone back to Limburg for the holidays and according to Kurt, (...)”

Limburg is the most southern province of the Netherlands. I hope Femke ate a lot of vlaai, a delicacy of this province.

21. Work - Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812

““There’s a Dutch Pinball Museum in Rotterdam.”

I don’t really have something to say here. Like I said in the author’s note of this chapter, I used this chapter to shoehorn a lot of places in one chapter after I read a book about Rotterdam’s sights. I’ve never been here, but it sounds fun.

“Apparently he left NYADA to pursue a career in fashion. He got a job at Vogue and Vogue’s now paying for his degree here.”

Huh, I could’ve sworn that I had specified where Kurt studies, but apparently not. (This surprises me. I know that I never mentioned Femke’s last name in the fic, but I was so certain of this.) (Femke Cheng, by the way.) But anyway, Kurt studies at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute. I don’t know if it’s realistic that Vogue pays for Kurt’s degree, but hey, there’s also an English taught law degree at EUR in this AU! 🤷‍♀️

“Blaine, Bella and Femke are walking through West-Kruiskade, which is part of Rotterdam’s Chinatown. Now, Femke is the only Chinese person out of the three, but Bella and Blaine like this place as well. She’s taking them to St. Anny Bakery.”

I have a little story time. So, as I mentioned, I’ve only been in the city centre of Rotterdam two times. Once last December, and once years ago back in secondary school. The latter contributed to my dislike of the city. It was cold, fuckem wimdy, and we had to walk past a lot of houses for geographical reasons, so it wasn’t fun. I only liked the Markthal, because it just opened and it is gorgeous, and Chinatown. I was the only Asian kid in that entire group and I don’t know man, but being there just made me feel strangely at home. I never knew the name, so I was happy when this area got mentioned in that book. I don’t remember whether or not I’ve passed St. Anny Bakery, but the book mentioned it and I needed a reason for the characters to be in West-Kruiskade.

“Yesterday, Kurt took Blaine to Theater Walhalla in Katendrecht and it’s a small, cosy theatre – or gezellig, as the Dutch say – and they had to sit close and Blaine felt like dying inside.”

Yeah, I’ve never been to Theatre Walhalla. Just like the pinball club, it’s in this chapter for Rotterdam exposition. Gezellig is a word that has no English translation. People sometimes come up with cosy, which is why Blaine mentioned it, but no, cosy in Dutch is knus. Gezellig is… gezellig.

“The Suicide Club is an inappropriate name for a club situated on a rooftop”

Yes, this is what the Suicide Club looked like, back when it was still open. Again, exposition. I’ve never been here and it looks nice.

“Femke, Bella and Adeola are still inside, tearing through the bitterballen, mini frikandellen, nuts, cheese cubes and other borrelhapjes.”

Borrelhapjes is the term for all kind of little snacks that you eat during a borrel (having drinks). You can have them at home with friends or at a café. There are a lot of them, and the photo doesn’t display the ones I mentioned. The round things are bitterballen. They’re like kroketten (remember them?) but smaller and round. The cheese cubes are very recognisable, so are the nuts in the back, appropriately called borrelnootjes (nuts for drinks). My story also mentioned mini frikandellen and honestly, I know I grew up here, but I still don’t exactly know what a frikandel is. The photo also adds slices of sausage and olives.

23. Company - The Band's Visit

“De Boompjeskade is the place to be. Kurt told them to go here. It’s apparently a tradition in Rotterdam to do a Nationale Vuurwerk on every New Year’s Eve. The famous Erasmusbrug will be surrounded by a fireworks show.”

I already explained the Nationale Vuurwerkshow in the author’s note, but yeah, here’s another picture. And the kade shows you from what point of view the characters saw the show.

“Everyone holds up their Susan Bijl bag, which leads to Kurt taking a photo of that too. Everyone in this damned city has something of this designer. Kurt likes their work and he took Blaine to Susan Bijl’s shop.”

I also explained this in the story, but yeah, this is what the bags look like.

“Femke comes back from a stand and she’s holding a basket with some sort of snack in it.”

Oliebollen! I think Femke also did a decent job explaining them, but this is what they look like.

24. Rise - Hadestown

“Kurt laughs when he looks at the time on Blaine’s Hema alarm clock.”

Yes, yes, an alarm clock! This is actually almost the exact same alarm clock that I have (mine is grey). This is from the Hema, which I mentioned above.

“I have hageslakken in the cupboard!”

“Do you mean hagelslag?”

“Damnit. Guess I am not as integrated as I thought.”

“Screw hagelslag!” Kurt says, “Do you have apples, flour, milk and eggs? I’m craving appelpannenkoeken.”

Yes, you might’ve heard that the Dutch eat chocolate sprinkles on their bread. That is true. This is called hagelslag. It doesn’t have to be chocolate though, but that’s the best known one. Hagelslag is shown in the middle and the right image. The left one is a variant, called vlokken. Blaine accidentally called them hagelslakken. Slakken is the Dutch word for slugs. I don’t know if this is a mistake that happens often, but I actually accidentally typed hagelslakken and I kept it in the story. And Dutch pancakes are thinner and bigger than American pancakes. Also the apples are baked in the pan with the dough, so they’re not toppings. The most usual toppings for pannenkoeken are syrup and powdered sugar.

Weert, Limburg. Uhm. Eh. The most brabantic stad in the Limburg? Seriously, because it is so similar to the other cities of Noord Brabant in terms of architecture. Like it is definitely not a genuine Limburg style "Tall buildings which are red in colour". However, it doesn't mean that this was a bad city. It was quite original and worth to make a visit into if you are into Limburg, but if just like to get around, hate brabantstaad, then it is not a city for you.

Stadhuis. What can I say? Modern, docile, beautiful. Near the train station, which I also appreciate. But, honestly, I prefer something more traditional, because I am tired looking at all of those modern things in old cities.

Liked the building design. Seriously, I love to meet such buildings, they are different from the mundane crap I usually see and are worth to take a photo of.

A church. Honestly, looks good, but not much different from the others. Every dutch city has a church, which is the most clean and tidy place in the whole city. I believe that it has nothing to do with religion and the Netherlands is actually the most secular country in the world, it's just how the things are!

Typical view of the city. Can seem to be quite nice.

And yet note, that no trash over there. Everything is clean. Something which flevish authorities have to not. Clean up the Almere, it looks terrible.
