Dragons: Rescue Riders Season 6 Review and Rant. MAJOR SPOILERS!
This is basically a short review of the series, watch the show first if you don’t want spoilers, but if you don’t care, continue.
Ok, is it just me or did Rescue Riders just get really intense? At least in comparison to the previous seasons. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good for shows to address topics like friendship, bullying, sign language and medical conditions, (Wiffy the Stinkwing naturally being stinky until he changes his diet). Those are good things to tackle, especially for a kids show, (yes, this is a kids show, Riders and Defenders of Berk along with Race to the Edge are the big kid shows, for lack of a better term).
But those are filled with funny things in them, and then we have the episodes like: If we don’t find the special clam, our whole day will be ruined! Ruined I say! Sheep falling in love, a race with their home on the line that shouldn’t have happened, Winger never should have betted the Roost on a race, it was easily avoidable.
And then we get season 6! Apparently the last season and they went full out with it! The twins having to go undercover with pirates in order to save Walnado, Elbone almost drowning at the bottom of the ocean? A dragon almost succeeding at stealing the Roost, amnesia? And, my personal favorite: “What makes you think we’ll work for you?” “What makes you think I’ll feed you if ya don’t?” I mean, in Race to the Edge sure, but Rescue Riders?
MAJOR SPOILERS FOR “THE GREATEST SHOW DRAGONS.” Basically a review, skip if you haven’t seen it, seriously the best episode in the series.
And Burple and Cutter’s backstory? I’ve been wondering for months why Burple is a bit… slower than the others; Not knowing certain words, eating things he shouldn’t eat, being oblivious to things… I figured it was because every show need a dumb person to bounce of off. (Sorry, can’t think of a better word for it). HTTYD had Ruffnut and Tuffnut and to an extent Snotlout, but they were smart in ways the others weren't. Gravity Falls has Sues, The Emperor's New Groove has Kronk, Spongebob Squarepants has Patrick, (although it’s pretty much every character by now).
BUT NOW IT MAKES SENSE!
Burple wasn’t raised by dragons, dragons he could ask as he grew “Why’s the sky blue?” “What does this word mean?” “Why do we spit rocks and they shoot fire?” “Why shouldn’t I eat that human hammer?” He was raised in a cage, by a human who used him as an act. He couldn't ask him anything because Arno didn’t understand dragon. And Burple tries to make friends with everyone he meets because the dragons were probably constantly changing around him; Why would Arno keep a dragon if it refused to do anything? Waste of space, time and fish. He didn’t want to leave because at least here he would always have at least one friend, or at least someone to talk to.
And Cutter? He was in there for about a year, a year where the more tricks you do, the more fish you get. That explains why he’s always trying to show off; It may not be trauma from his time in the circus, but an instinct he picked up. And his ability to know when someone is a con or just fake? He spent a lot of time with Arno, he probably recognises the signs when he sees them.
His closeness with Burple makes more sense to; Cutter is sharp and clever, Burple is a little slow and naive. It seems like Cutter would be better friends with Winger or Summer, and he definitely connected with Aggro like they’ve known each other forever. It didn’t make too much sense, but now it does!
Cutter was probably scared and confused when he got captured, and Raf was probably no help at all, but Burple would have been. He would have been used to dragons freaking out after being captured and would have learned how to calm them down. With only three dragons to talk to, and one being very rude, of course they would have bonded. Cutter saw how Arno mistreated Burple, and while Burple saw nothing wrong with it, Cutter definitely did. He couldn’t get Burble to understand that it was wrong, so the next best thing was to keep him as safe as he could under the intimidating eye of Arno.
Also, the way Arno hit the bars to tell Burple what to do has to be a reference to the Quakens in Between a rock and a hard place.
Long story short, the two became brothers, and when they were finally free, Cutter could have left, found more Razor wings, contempt with the fact Burple would be fine with Winger and the gang, but he didn’t want to leave his brother behind, even if he would never admit they were brothers.
Summer’s backstory was good, for what it was, it didn’t go as hard because it didn’t need to. They didn’t have to go all out for Cutter and Burple either: If they were found at separate times, never knowing each other and having some other reasons to join the team, it would have been just fine. But they did, and it connects so many things.
Remember when the darkest thing was when Walnado tried to kidnap and sell the kids to the highest bidder? (Treasure Riders). Also, all of Grublegard’s kids are technical orphans, that's kinda dark when you really think about it.
Anyway, that's my rant. Despite all I’ve said, I do love this show and wish more episodes would come out, maybe a final movie about Winger, Dak and Layla’s mom and what happened to her? The writers of this series are incredible and the animation is pretty good. It sticks to the books in a way the HTTYD movies never did: The dragons can talk, the kids were raised by dragons, the competitions Huttsgalor had with other tribes were like what Berk had with the Bog Burglars, (not exactly, but close enough), and lots of references. (Yes, I read the books, great job Cressida Cowell, you’ll never see this but I love your work). Winger is even blue, just like The Dragon Furious! The twin’s hair is red, just like book Hiccup. Grublegard could be a reference to The Dragon Furious, if you squint really hard.
(By the way, this is my first review of anything, so please don’t be mean. You can disagree all you want, but don’t be a jerk, I’m sensitive). And above all else, I hope you have a great day, whether you agree with me or not, at the end of the day it doesn’t really matter.

Double feature with Fire fury and Rockspitter! It’s a shame that Fire fury is mostly represented by Argro, cause you think baby spyro dragon then you see the adult and you’d go “Oh what, you are actually Grapple Grounder, better Grapple Grounder in fact(now that they retcon the desgin with the triangular snake head)”  As for Rockspitter, they’re basically round gronckle, there’s not much to comment more on that. Although having the body closely resembling baby gronckle it make me wonder if Adult rockspitter is like that too or are they going to have different body shape.

I just finished the Rescue Riders and it’s absolutely adorable.
(Headcanons under read more to avoid spoilers)
Ever since I saw the dragon class badges in Leyla’s dragon journal, I’ve HC’d they’re either Dagur’s kids (as the boy resembles him very much, even with that cut brow) or closely related, possibly Heather’s kids.
And if the Forever Horn is a distant relative of the Forever Wing? I strongly HC that the Swiftwing is a distant relative of the Night Fury. They resemble each other, and when performed, the mega blast has the same Night Fury divebomb sound.
They may say that Burple is a rock spitter, but I’m 100% proof positive he’s a Gronkle. Prove me otherwise.

Reasons why you should give DreamWorks Dragons: Rescue Riders a chance BEFORE judging
Hear me out before you attack me.
Yes, I am aware it is not canon to the HTTYD universe and it is not supposed to be. It is a standalone universe with new characters, new dragons, and a new setting. I know it is supposed to be aimed at a younger target audience. With that out of the way here is a reason why y’all should give Rescue Riders a fair chance. I am not trying to force you to watch it but at least give it a fair chance before dismissing it as bad. Anyway, here we go.
Reason 1: The main characters Layla and Dak were shipwrecked and a mother dragon raised them. When the mother dragon raised them they gained the ability to talk to the dragons which are a parallel to the How To Train Your Dragon books where Hiccup was raised by a dragon and learned the Dragonese which is the language of the dragons. So you could say that in a way Rescue Riders are an homage to the books and not the films.
Reason 2: The dragons are fucking adorable!!! I mean we have Burple the Gronckle, Summer The Fastfin, Winger the Swiftwing and Cutter the Relentless Razorwing. I mean look at this!!!!
Tumblr media
CUTTER IS SO STINKING CUTE!!!!! ALL OF THE DRAGONS ARE
Reason 3: It’s basically Paw Patrol with dragons. Need I say more.
Reason 4: Winger is voiced by none other than Zach Callison whom you may know as Steven from Steven Universe.
Reason 5: That is all. Now go and watch Rescue Riders if ya want to. I ‘m not your mom.

Watching Dragons: Rescue Riders so you don't have to: Episode 2
once again, please reblog this!
again fuck this theme song
am i wrong for shipping summer and aggro?
how tf has this bitch not seen coloured crystals before smh
i like aggro
"you don't speak dragon" I'M SORRY WHAT
IS DRAGONESE A THING IN THIS SHOW???
CAN-
CAN ONLY DAK AND LAYLA HEAR THE DRAGONS???
WHAT
cutter just turns into a fucking flamethrower bruv
they are finally developing their posterchild night fury knockoff dragon Winger BY FUCKING NERFING HIM AHAHAHAHAHAHA
i like aggro
honestly? the voice acting in this show is good. it's predictable, it's nothing special, but it's not hard to listen to by any means and each voice suits the characters to a t (probably becahse they're as cookie cutter as anything but who cares). voice acting good
burple pleases me
honestly when he's not being played as a fat joke he's just so sweet
guy apparently has six toes okay fair enough
kid me would have vibed so hard with leyla or however its spelled
AGGRO CAN GLOW AND LIGHT HERSELF UP WITH FIRE I LOVE HER
i vibe with summer tbh
crystals. affect. dragons.
okay thats information i am willing to live with actually
like that's genuinely kind of cool in a self indulgent sort of way
also THE SQUASH AND STRETCH ANIMATION 😘👌
i love burple 🩷
LOL SUMMER JUST SLAUGHTERED THAT BOAR
side note WHY DO THE BOARS LOOK WEIRD
so is burple being unaffected by the crystals like this shows version of gronckles not being affected by dragon root?
man they really did rip off that scene with toothless and the skrill in the mirroring ice caves huh? not that i mind lol
okay can i be honest? im actually really enjoying watching this show like no joke. like yes it relies on the original series in order to be as good as it is but there are plenty of things i find enjoyable about it. i like the animation and even tho the rendering is super plasticy and polished i kind of like that? it's nostalgic.
favourite character: aggro i love her so much but honestly i love all the main dragons they are so sweet all of them
least favourite character: elbone specifically because his naïvety annoys me but he was intended by the writers to be ever so slightly annoying so that's actually a plus in my eyes

Watching Dragons: Rescue Riders so you don't have to: Episode 3
Hehehe cooped up inside going crazy over a snowstorm where have I seen this plot before?
Still fucking love Aggro sm
SOBBING i talk about the animation in this show being good and then THAT RIVER OMG 😭😭😭
like the water physics are great but that fucking texture 😭
"burple, of course she got freed" "no i didn't" 💀💀💀
leyla is short people mood
Leyla & Dak backstory?? fuck yeah
YO WE GOT PIRATES IN THIS SHOW FUCK YEAH!!!!!
"H2Oh-No-You-Didn't" 💀💀💀
the whole dragonese thing was a really interesting choice and im glad they went with that tbh
I vibe so hard with Summer i love her so much
cutter pretending not to be interested in leylas story and then shedding tears at the end wow i felt that
THAT SNOW LOOKED SO FLUFFY OH MY GODS THIS SHOW HAS SUCH GOOD TEXTURING/ANIMATION/RENDERING WTF
so i really enjoyed this episode. the constant story interruptions were a bit jarring when they kept fucking happening but otherwise i thought it was good!
favourite character: i think summer took the cake for me in this episode since it was her spotlight episode and i love her personality so much (tho aggro is still best girl)
least favourite character: burple, surprisingly. there was this running gag in this episode where he and dak and winger kept being annoying and interrupting the story. and like dak and winger were intentionally written to be annoying and egotistical and shit. and burple was just being a doofus which is like his whole character. but the thing is dak and wingers interruptions didn't take me out of the story? hard to explain but they didnt and they weren't horrible and it worked. vs burples interruptions which around the third act especially became actually overwhelming and distracting which was an error on the writers part. like it genuinely became hard to watch at times which obviously wasn't what the writers intended. i was gonna say dak and winger were my lesst favourites this time because their egotism annoyed me but the way burple was written actively made the quality of the episode worse, so. but don't get me wrong this episode is otherwise pretty good
