general dprk discourse is genuinely insane when you've stepped out of the whole western brain rot that views the country as fucking mordor. its genuinely depressing too because the dprk's history isn't hard to learn or understand, i learned about how millions of civilians were bombed and killed in my conservative history class age 15
but its still so easy to find videos or tiktoks with millions of views saying how the dprk has this scheme to lure people into the country for vaguely nefarious means, or whatever insane diatribe yeonmi park went on in a conservative podcast - that's not just cycled round by people who are just not political, but leftists who are fully educated in all of this but still refuse to re-evaluate their understanding of a foreign country
its such a terrifying and annoying testament to capitalist brainwashing that a lot of conceptions of north korea that can easily be explained by logical facts of its readily available history (sanctions, after effects of the korean war, foreign relations) are ignored for instead the most fantastical explanation like kim jong un's the grinch or something

the solipsism of the western media is so incredible. you take any video that happens in China or the DPRK and they immediately assume that it’s a special performance put on for Them. as if in even in the most cynical possible view of the CPC or WPK they’re sitting there thinking ‘oh damn how do we impress the Westerners better force some people to do a dance i think they’ll like that. and share it on TikTok’

I was watching a couple videos on Cuba (I know it doesn't substitute for actual research or lived experience dw) and the comment section of the first one I watched had quite a lot of actual Cuban citizens in the comments talking about how much Cuba sucks and there was another comment that mentioned how the commenter (also Cuban citizen) felt that the younger generations were getting dumber and more anti-communist
Then the video I watched after opened by showing a US document that outlined the goal of the embargo being to make sure the population stays poor and miserable and thereby manufacture support for US intervention in the communist government.
Anyway the US is a den of the most vile poisonous snakes to ever curse our world.
That absolutely is the goal of the usamerican blockade. In fact, it is the outright stated goal of every single soft power intervention the united states carries out from sanctions to trade deals. Indeed, the conditions in Cuba are not great! But how much of it is actually because of the government there versus the united states' full blockade of the island? I can guarantee the latter has a far, far greater effect and this was proven when obama briefly lifted the embargo and the Cubans saw a significant recovery. This, of course, would have dashed the entire point of the operation and so the blockade was swiftly re-implemented under trump.
In Iraq, Iran, Libya, DPRK, China, Russia, so on and so forth, the same usamerican imperialist playbook is used. So long as the "advanced" imperialist countries dominate the world economy while the global south languish, there is no easy way to counter these forms of economic warfare. You have to be big and diverse enough and have a strong political-economical superstructure and base to be able to invest in yourself, like the USSR and the PRC in order to whether this siege and even then, survival is not guaranteed. The fact that the DPRK and Cuba have survived so long despite being put in an economic noose is a testament to the resilience of their peoples and the strength of their respective governments, not the other way around.

For almost a decade, Nick Roy has been scanning North Korea’s tiny internet presence, spotting new websites coming online and providing a glimpse of the Hermit Kingdoms’ digital life. However, at the end of last year, the cybersecurity researcher and DPRK blogger stumbled across something new: signs North Koreans are working on major international TV shows.
In December, Roy discovered a misconfigured cloud server on a North Korean IP address containing thousands of animation files. Included in the cache were animation cells, videos, and notes discussing the work, plus changes that needed to be made to ongoing projects. Some images appeared to be from an Amazon Prime Video superhero show and an upcoming Max (aka HBO Max) children’s anime.
The findings and security lapse—detailed in a report by the Stimson Center think tank's North Korea–focused 38 North Project, which helped analyze the findings along with Google-owned security firm Mandiant—provide a glimpse at how North Korea can use skilled IT and tech workers to raise funds for its heavily sanctioned regime. It also comes as US officials increasingly warn about North Korean IT workers infiltrating companies and their outsourcing.
North Korea’s internet is a small—and fragile—space. The repressive nation only has 1,024 IP addresses and around 30 websites that connect to the global internet. While there is a limited internal intranet, only a few thousand of the country’s 26 million people can get on the internet. When they do, it’s highly controlled: These select few North Koreans can use the internet for an hour at a time and have a person sitting next to them approving their use every five minutes.
When Roy discovered the exposed cloud server, it was being updated on a daily basis. Martyn Williams, a senior fellow on the 38 North Project who helped analyze the contents of the server, says the server likely allowed work to be sent to and from North Korean animators. The server itself is still live, but it mysteriously stopped being used at the end of February. While there is a login page, its contents can be accessed without a username and password. “I found the login page after I found all the exposed files,” Roy says.
Inside, the files contained editing comments and instructions in Chinese which were translated to Korean, the researchers write in their report. “For a lot of the animation files, we would find things like spreadsheets with details of the workflow,” Williams says. A sample of the files shared with WIRED show detailed anime images and video clips, with notes for the authors and date stamps on various files. In one instance, the report says, an animator was “asked to improve the shape of the character’s head.”
Based on the documents and drawings, the researchers were able to identify some of the shows and projects the North Koreans were working on. Some of the projects included work from season 3 of the Amazon show Invincible, which is produced by California-based Skybound Entertainment. There were also documents linked to Max and Cartoon Network show Iyanu: Child of Wonder, produced by YouNeek Studios, as well as files from a Japanese anime series and an animation studio in Japan.
Some file names gave away clues about the series and episode numbers. There were also files and projects the researchers could not identify—including a “bunch of files” with videos of horses and a Russian book on horses, Williams says.
Sanctions placed upon the North Korean regime, for its ongoing human rights abuses and nuclear warfare programs, prohibit US companies from working with DPRK companies or individuals. However, the researchers say it is highly unlikely that any companies involved would have a clue about North Korean animators working on the shows, and there is nothing suggesting the companies violated any sanctions or other laws. “It is likely that the contracting arrangement was several steps downstream from the major producers,” the report says.
Spokespeople for Amazon and Max spokesperson declined to comment for this story. YouNeek Studios did not respond to a request for comment.
“We do not work with North Korean companies, or Chinese companies on Invincible, or any affiliated entities, and have no knowledge of any North Korean or Chinese companies working on Invincible,” a spokesperson for Skybound Entertainment says. “We take any claims very seriously and have commenced an investigation into this.” In a post on X, the company characterized the findings as “unconfirmed” and said it is working with authorities to investigate.
Williams says it is possible that a front company in China is used to help disguise the activity and involvement of North Koreans. The researchers were able to analyze connections to the exposed server and, despite most having their location masked by a VPN, spotted access from Spain and three Chinese cities. “All three cities are known to have many North Korean–operated businesses and are main centers for North Korea’s IT workers who live overseas,” the report says.
While Williams says the researchers did not find any identifiable names of North Korean organizations buried in the files, the country has a well-established animation company called April 26 Animation Studio, which is also known as SEK Studio. Originally set up in the 1950s, the studio has worked on hundreds of international TV shows and movies.
However, in recent years, the US Treasury Department has sanctioned SEK Studios, individuals linked to it, and various “front companies” that it says are used to “work for foreign customers.” Many of these have links to China, according to the sanctions. “SEK Studio has utilized an assortment of front companies to evade sanctions targeting the government of the DPRK and to deceive international financial institutions,” a statement issued as part of the sanctions in 2021 says.
The main aim of these efforts, says Michael Barnhart, a North Korea researcher at Mandiant, is to raise money for the North Korean regime. The country’s hackers and scammers have stolen and extorted billions of dollars to help fund its military ambitions in recent years, including from huge cryptocurrency heists. In early 2022, the FBI issued a 16-page alert warning companies that remote North Korean freelance IT workers were infiltrating businesses to earn money they could funnel back home.
“The volume is much higher than we were expecting,” Barnhart says of North Korea’s IT workers. They are constantly changing their tactics to avoid being caught, he says. “We had one not too long ago, where during the interview, the person’s mouth was just off-frame. You could tell that someone in the background was speaking on their behalf.” Technically, Barnhart says, companies should verify their remote workers’ devices and make sure that there is no remote software connecting to a company laptop or network. Businesses should also put extra efforts at the hiring stage by training HR staff to detect possible IT workers.
However, he says, increasingly there is a greater crossover between North Korean IT workers and individuals who are members of known hacking groups or classified as advanced persistent threats (APTs). “The more we focus on IT workers, the more we’re starting to see APT operators and efforts blending in with those,” he says. “This might be the most quick learning-on-your-feet, nimble nation-state that I've ever seen.”

there's another stupid dprk myth going around. people are using an edited video with no sound sourced from a non-existent think tank, to say that two teens are either being
- sentenced to 12 years hard labor for watching k drama
- executed for watching k drama
depending on the source, it's more nonsense obviously but maybe be on the lookout for it.

Hi I would really love resources on US propaganda against the dprk and what it’s actually like there. I don’t have the knowledge yet to differentiate between propaganda and reliable sources so I’d love to read what you have to share
of course, thanks for reaching out!
aside from direct resources on the dprk, which i will provide below, much of our understanding of the dprk comes from knowledge of how the united states engages with other communist countries. it's impossible to understand the dprk without acknowledging how false testimonies, psychological operations, and imperialism (broadly speaking) have affected other countries.
it's of utmost importance to remember that the united states has an agenda. we have to understand us-funded information through a particular lens, because it's produced to evoke distrust and dehumanization of people from communist or socialist countries. i could go on and on about this but i'll stick to the resources for now! comrades are welcome to suggest any additions, i’d be happy to add!
edit: my final project for my undergrad degree was on us corporate-owned media framing of north korea, so i actually started doing a lot more research. you can reference that portfolio here. it contains a literature review concerning how and why the us mass media frames north korea negatively and a subsequent research project about discrepancies between how strongly us citizens form opinions on north korea despite lacking concrete knowledge of north korea. the citations and extra resources pages list some nice sources. check it out if you’d like :]
my personal suggestions :-)
youtube
loyal citizens of pyongyang in seoul - this short 40-minute documentary changed my life. this is a critical first-step into understanding the dprk.
my brothers and sisters in the north - beautiful documentary of a south korean, living in germany, who goes to north korea to understand their life from their perspectives. great insight into both urban and rural life in the dprk.
why do north korean defectors keep changing their stories? - addresses the lies of celebrity defectors like bak yeonmi
how yeonmi park is a right wing grifter and the fake news of radio free asia - addresses yeonmi park as a right-wing figurehead and celebrity and her lies
dprk education explained (dprk explained channel) - dispels common myths about education in the dprk. dprk explained has simple, easy to understand videos about the structure of the dprk.
we went to north korea to get a haircut - two youtubers go to the dprk to get a haircut of their liking. dispels common myths about "authoritarianism" in the dprk and freedom of expression.
inside america's meddling machine: ned, the us-funded org interfering in elections across the globe - not necessarily about north korea but essential to understanding disinformation campaigns and destabilization
usa vs. dprk: ignoring history paves way to disaster - uses korean and historian perspectives to understand the dprk and united states' shared history
dispelling myths about north korea - dr. suzy kim dispels common myths about north korea. really really insightful
north korea: myths, lies and truths - dr. kathy moon dispels myths about north korea. similar to the former but also great!
why is north korea so weird? - dispelling myths again, short and sweet!
eid al-fitr in north korea (jaka parker channel) - dispels common myths about religion in the dprk. jaka parker has some great videos about living in the dprk as a foreign national.
interview of an official of the catholic church in pyongyang, north korea (eric lafforgue channel) - dispels common myths about religion in the dprk. eric lafforgue has some nice interviews with people in the dprk.
lee fang on how a little-known u.s. libertarian think tank is remaking latin american politics - i don't love democracy now! but i think this video is helpful in understanding ngos and us-backed programs that form disinformation campaigns.
five days in north korea - pyongyang, dmz, dandong train
north korean fashion show
pyongyang's downtown
how much do you know about north korean cosmetics?
books and text
understanding korea by kfa - understanding korea is a series of texts that give a very in-depth look at how north korean society is structured. interestingly, these very accessible resources dispel myths that celebrity defectors propagate (like the myth that there’s one working train in the dprk and no electricity)... lol
anti-communism and the korean war 1950-1953 by jon halliday - great for understanding motive and outcome of the korean war
sanctions of empire by notdutdol - answering the question of how sanctions devastate nations, great from the perspective of koreans
everyday life in the north korean revolution, 1945-1950 by suzy kim - i mentioned her earlier and she has some great content with really nuanced views
north korean constitution - delineates the rights of north korean people
the us didn't bring freedom to south korea –– its people did by kap seol - not a big fan of jacobin mag but good for understanding the gwangju massacre and uprising of communists in south korea
juche! the speeches and writings of kim il sung ed. li yuk-sa - incredibly dense for a foreigner (like myself) but insightful into the development of a formerly occupied nation into a developed system
against empire by michael parenti - not necessarily on the dprk but very informative concerning us meddling and violence in countries around the world. also has a great lecture from 1986 on imperialism available on youtube (great to sit and eat to lol)
inventing reality by michael parenti - again, not really about the dprk but very insightful for understanding how the news media functions as an agent of the state
organizations
nodutdol - organization of diaspora koreans fighting for reunification. great, brief infographics on instagram with sources and has a bunch of great resources in their linktree!
the tongil peace foundation - organization for people looking for peace and reunification on the korean peninsula
korean friendship association - exactly like it sounds, foreigners showing support to the dprk, some great tools and resources on their page
masterlists of dprk resources
dprk reading list - some have defunct links and stuff, which is why i didn’t link this itself. also i can’t attest to the quality as i haven’t read all of this!
dprk study guide - same as above :-)

a lot of little things done today! I'll snap a picture tomorrow but I finally filled up my two filing cabinets, slapped stickers on them, and went through my stationary/memory boxes and labeled those too! I found these two pieces of ephemera: a name tag from a grad school conference I went to and a list c. 2018 that's just labeled "Top 10"... I think it was our list of worst things we think will happen in the next few years and it's shocking how close some of them are to the truth
List is typed below the pictures for those who cannot read my handwriting
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All out race war 2. Polio (all varieties) 3. Super volcano 4. Florida becomes the norm 5. Debt collectors become bounty hunters 6. Amazon/Alexa & Siri revolt 7. Drones s8. Meat becomes universally too expensive 9. Trump gets second term 10. DPRK/Nuclear War
I also pulled two projects off my blocking boards today! The black Christmas cowl for my mama and my colorworked cowl I did to go with my alpenflage coat!

I frogged my messed up start to my next vest: I counted as I went along and realized I fucked up with my German short rows!!! I almost cried because the pattern had video tutorials but then they were all in German (hint: my German skills are not up for this level of chatter). Eventually, I realized it was a different method of German short rows that was tripping me up

Im sorry but why do you support North Korea? It’s literally a dictatorship
there is literally so much I could say about this but I am going to assume you asked this in good faith and say first of all please take a minute to analyze why you choose to believe anything the United States government or any Western imperial power has to say about a communist nation that they previously attempted to genocide? Think to yourself why on earth would the United States, the biggest imperial power on earth with the strongest military and most vested interest in the continuation of white supremacy and capitalism, have a vested interest in spreading lies about a communist self sufficient nation that once again, they previously tried to genocide. Also consider how easy it is for the U.S. to spread this propaganda because the majority of Americans have under a 10th grade reading level, nearly 1/4 of Americans are functionally illiterate, and the vast majority of Americans speak and understand no Korean and even less understand the dialect of Korean spoken by those in the DPRK.
Now with all that in mind, what in particular about the DPRK do you find horrific? Is it the fact that many citizens lack access to food because of embargos and sanctions set into place by the U.S. government? Is it the comparative lack of electrical power with western nations due to embargos and sanctions put in place by the U.S. government? Is it the strange and outlandish laws that don't actually exist but you wouldn't know that because you are choosing to believe the information you get from Western media? Is it the labor and reeducation camps that defectors like Shin Dong-hyuk tell, never once mentioning that he was put in jail for sexually assaulting someone? Is it stories like those told by defector Yeonmi Park, a notorious liar who has changed her "escape" story more than 5 times and is on the payroll of the U.S. state department? Is it that all the citizens of the DPRK that you have seen are "actors"? a claim so baffling and ridiculous that I can't even begin to explain why you would believe it. Is it the idea that all DPRK citizens are brainwashed and in desperate need of Americans to save them? because that's totally not manifest destiny repackaged in a post cold war world! And do you have sources that aren't from Radio Free Asia or other Western media outlets to support this? photographic evidence? videos? surely if the DPRK was, en masse, torturing it's citizens, starving them, and putting them in forced labour camps that we would have some proof, right?
In all honesty, I can show you hours of documentation that proves that anything the U.S. government says is horseshit, on both "sides" of the aisle, but I know that won't change your mind. But I believe in a global communist future and I believe that what the government has said about the DPRK and their people are LIES. if you read this far, good for you and I hope you take what I said to heart

The truth is more stubborn than Washington lies, and reality can not be distorted forever
The post is machine translated
Translation is at the bottom

🇺🇸 The USA and their lackeys, including Italy, have always promoted - over the years - the disgusting idea «Muslim = terrorist», but - for Xinjiang, they have rediscovered the "standard bearers" of Muslim rights, in an anti - Chinese 🤡
🇨🇳 With the desire to interfere in internal affairs and want to balkanize China, the US has artificially constructed the "Xinjiang Case" - articles with unproven news, incorrect news or even fabricated news, passing it off as the truth 🤮
🌸 The Shaoshan Collective covered this topic in detail, denying any anti-Chinese lie:
🌺 Xinjiang Master-Post 🇨🇳
🤔 What does the West mean when it talks about the "breakup" of Russia and anti-Chinese separatism masquerading as Democracy? 🇺🇸
😱 These news are also ′′ launched ′′ to Western users by people who don't know anything about China, posing as ′′ China experts ′′ but don't know a single word of Chinese, they are Assets of the US Empire. And should people in the West trust them? It's ridiculous! 😡
⭐️ Comrade Liu writes:
💬 «Those who frame China should at least learn a little Chinese, not just rely on the imagination. [...] The Canadian in the video is called Lyman Stone, a researcher at the AEI and the Institute for Family Studies, and Ex-Economist at the US Department of Agriculture, and he's pretty sure he can search and buy at Taobao of "Uyghur slaves"» 🤦‍♀️
🤔 Let's stop for a moment: how can you say that you can buy an "Uyghur slave" on an e-commerce?! Here we are at the ridiculous level of DPRK propaganda, whoever believes it is a 没有救赎可能的白痴! 😂
💬 However, "when Carl Zha immediately asked him to search for and buy a Uyghur slave on Taobao, he refused (❗️), saying he didn't know Chinese and therefore couldn't use the Chinese keyboard", to then say that maybe it wasn't Taobao, but on «other sites», it was basically exposed 🤡

idk how it is in Korea, but ppl in the west are full of propaganda about how in the DPRK they just line up schoolchildren and shoot them, that's the worst one i've heard but there's millions of other things similar, so when you say anything about the DPRK they immediately imagine these kinds of things, its a knee-jerk reaction for many westerners.
yeah it's the same but more intimate cuz we r literally the same people they've only been separate from us as a national identity for a few generations now. videos from the dprk appear in the south korean news often like how their crops are doing and what small political things are happening within their government. south koreans just don't have the thick ideological veil of foreignness and orientalism. there's still immense propaganda and recent history of dictatorship led propaganda but it's not so ridiculous and the news stories about the dprk are pretty much accurate.
the vast majority of people will have this knee jerk reaction and i ignore most of them. they're so willing to believe in the oriental despot trope they don't actually need facts. but sometimes the stuff they say rly bothers me and i just have to tell them the truth as i know it.

This is such a weird thing but i just watched a video essay related to media made in the dprk and i wish there were more documentaries and stuff about it that came from non-aligned countries or reporting groups bc the level of propagandizing makes the reality of whatever happens in there almost impossible to parse . I’m sure i’m not looking hard enough but i think the concept of art being made in north korea is so interesting and i would love to see more stuff like movies and music and video games and stuff like that that’s being circulated among the population whether by legal means or not

the reactions ppl have towards ppl from socialist countries (current or past), and countries who have been heavily affected by american and european imperialism is one that should be noted and examined. Considering most of the countries that have went through socialism and imperialism (often times both) are mostly filled with non-white ppl, the reaction is one built on racism and xenophobia. We see this with China and Chinese people; in the american perspective we see China being portrayed as this mindless drone city, and on platforms on tiktok we see Chinese people, language, and culture be memed even if the most mundane things.
Through American and European efforts, if we can’t ‘pity’ a country then we must downplay its progress and make it seem like it’s not a place we must take a seriously (or the latter being making it seem like hell on earth). We pity African countries because of the emphasis of starving children and poverty, but we laugh at their culture and assassinate every leader trying to a make progress to socialism. We take accounts from Cuban-Americans and pass it up as the truth without acknowledging the actual reason they left.
Just recently I saw a video of this woman who went to the DPRK and showed the water park they had there. People were having fun, smiling, and the comments insisted it was fake and, that even if it was real, it was for the “elites”. That’s another thing- projection. Majority of Americas population is poor and starving, we have things only reserved for the elites. But we think we have the room to judge other countries just because of misguided propaganda.
