You know what canon needed more of? Stephen being a cool uncle to Cecile. She deserves it. He'd be a cool uncle, an irresponsible but very cool uncle.
oh i have some thoughts about this too!
cecile was probably only in nyc for a short time, y'know, before dorian sent her and paty away to romania for safety. but stephen would think cecile is so neat because he'd never seen a vampire younger than him before (aside from vlad but he doesnt count).
a totally irresponsible, eternally 20 yo vampire carrying his baby cousin on his shoulders wahh..... they're both different vampires in elysia's eyes but its okay bc family is the most solid thing for the ciottis

im sorry but you know that otis definitely has a guilty conscience despite how stubborn he is. he doesn’t like fighting with vlad because the silence absolutely kills him. it’s likely due to tomas abandoning him and that silence in his head gave him migraines for weeks on end. he ran away from the ciottis, his safe-place after he got tomas out of elysia, after believing he was the one who got adrian killed.
you know after learning that tomas killed enrico, all because enrico was heartbroken about his dead son and he was getting in tomas’ way of his plans, and even scraped off as someone who was half-mad — like you know otis feels guilt towards that because he did know about dorian and he even had to be the one to soothe enrico with mind control so he could get home with his brother. and he didn’t because tomas got a hold of him first.
i know vampires aren’t buried because they see it as barbaric, but i bet you whenever he has to hold meetings or tirals with the elders, he stays a little longer than everyone else in v bar, or stays in places like central park to just people-watch because he and enrico used to hunt together there.

Timeline questions: what the fuck was Otis actually up to after Tomas fled Elysia?
If Tomas waited until he was actually certain that Melina was pregnant to flee, then we can use Vlad's life as a sort of timescale? If Tomas waited and then as soon as he knew Melina was pregnant, decided to flee, and Otis was the only person he spoke to before running away, then Otis has between the night Tomas tells him he's leaving and the time that he shows up in Bathory, which is about uh almost 14 years to have done the things he says happened in this time.
We're told that he went into a depression after Tomas left, and spent some of this time being sad and drunk with Enrico and his family, this ends, after supposedly, Otis and Dorian kill Adrian, but we know that isn't true since 1. Tomas needed a vampire to die leaving no traces behind in the house fire in order to both kill Melina and cover his tracks after he left Bathory, and this vampire is revealed to be Adrian, 2. Adrian dying in the house fire would put his death a decade after Tomas left, and it's highly suspicious that Otis coincidentally thinks that he killed Adrian specifically. Dorian, when Adrian's death is brought up, is sad but doesn't actually reveal the truth that he and Otis had nothing to do with the murder.
I don't think it's likely that Otis was with them for a decade, as I think once Dorian had contact with Melina and was planning to get her and Vlad away from Tomas, he would've revealed to Otis that his nephew and sister-in-law were in serious danger. It's possible that Dorian and Adrian had this whole plan going on and never revealed it to Otis despite him living with them, but I seriously doubt that if they had followed through with said plan without him knowing, only to fail, Dorian wouldn't have used Otis and himself as a scapegoat to explain Adrian's disappearance because it would only further serve Tomas' goal of evading Elysian justice.
The person who stands to gain the most from Otis believing that he and Dorian killed Adrian, would be Tomas. Adrian couldn't have been killed in Dorian's night club if he was in Bathory, but Dorian is considered a dangerous cannibal and insane by the majority of Elysia so he's not entirely reliable as a witness, not to mention that he planned this rescue and didn't breathe a word of it to anyone other than Adrian and Melina, both of whom are dead, so it isn't hard to imagine that Tomas mind controlled a very drunk Otis [which Tomas is said to be exceptionally good at] into thinking that he was an accessory to Adrian's murder. While Otis isn't necessarily a very reliable witness himself since he was drunk, it would become a back and forth of is Dorian lying about murdering his son or is Otis remembering something that didn't actually happen.
Otis believing he and Dorian killed Adrian both gives a scapegoat and ruins his relationship with the Ciotti family and also makes him nervous to be around Dorian specifically as it's easy to assume that the guy capable of murdering his son would have no qualms about killing the accessory to his murder just to tie up lose ends.
Would Tomas have waited for years to mind control Otis about the murder? Maybe. Depending on how long Dorian had been in contact with Melina, Tomas could've known about their correspondents from the beginning, or found out about it later on, either way all he needed to do was target a part of Otis' memory that was fuzzy to start with, and then plant that memory of killing Adrian so that he'd avoid the Ciottis and not reach out to them out of fear and guilt.
Now this leaves the question, if Otis didn't drink from Adrian then how the hell is he able to use telekinesis to move things? He believes this is a direct result of drinking from Adrian. This is odd because if Dorian also drank from Adrian he should also be capable of telekinesis, but this is not the case. My theory is that Otis actually drank from Dorian and that this is the framework that Tomas manipulated to convince Otis that he drank from Adrian.
Timeline as best I understand it would be:
1. Tomas succeeds in getting Melina pregnant
2. Tomas tells Otis he's leaving Elysia to marry a human and have a kid
3. Otis gets depressed after losing his brother and spends some amount of time with the Ciottis until he drinks from Dorian while super drunk
4. Upon finding out that drinking from Dorian has telekinetic consequences, Otis thinks he can't spend time with other vampires while drunk because if it's revealed that he has powers he could be killed
5. The best way to not be drawn to drinking probably isn't to run away from your problems, but Otis is great at making poor choices so he fled to Stokerton and went back to teaching at Stokerton University, trying to forget the past which isn't too hard as it's all a drunken haze anyhow, save for the fact that he can literally move things with a thought
6. Adrian and Melina are killed, Tomas plants the memory of killing Adrian in Otis' mind and lets him think that that's why he left New York so fast and desperately committed to being sober and doesn't contact Enrico anymore
7. The Stokerton Council gets tipped off to Vlad living in Bathory and decides to try to convince Otis to help them find Tomas, and as Otis is both trying to seem normal and desperate to see his brother again, he agrees.
So begins the series.

OK I WANNA TALK ABOUT OTIS AND DORIAN NOW:
so like besides my guilty thing w tcovt is otis being tossed between the ciottis, on a serious note i know otis does not hate dorian. nor do i think he’s really scared of dorian - however he’s extremely HURT by dorian and distrustful of him; and with tomas’s brainwashing and his forced pov, he does have every right to be.
he states he knew full-well the kind of person dorian was: fickle, demanding, DANGEROUS. in the books, otis is like barely in his third century of living and he’s still got another like 30 odd years before he hits his third century of just being a vampire. otis is still a VERY young vampire. i think MAYBE the closest vampire to his age at the time was adrian/aiden. even then, that’s questionable. TOMAS was about a whole ass century older than him, and VLAD IS LITERALLY ONLY 17 IN THE FOURTH BOOK.
there is a pretty big gap between ages for him, and otis is a very co-dependent person it seems. i’m unsure if this is because of the shock he was given being turned, being told he was beaten nearly to death by ignatius for trying to save tomas, thus clinging to and wanting to be with tomas as much as he could. that’s his older brother, the man who saved his life twice ( from the bastilles, and then taking him all the way to siberia to be healed and trained by vikas ). tomas then left him, and hurt him in the process. he states how much it at affected him, and how lost he had been without his brother.
in comes dorian, stating he’d show otis how to live a better life - that being a vampire has much more to offer than what he’s been shown. he was hurt, broken, willing to take the cards dealt to him. not only that, his best friend would be close then if it meant being with dorian. he’d gotten very comfortable with dorian, his siblings, his son, and enrico. he felt like he was getting better.
only for it all to just go wrong in the worst way possible. he thinks he’s hurt adrian, drank from him, and that dorian killed him in the process ( i will come back to this part ). not only had he broken a very heavy law in elysia, he was made to believe that dorian killed his own son. it shook otis to his core knowing he’d done something so horrific. he’s killed, but i don’t think he’d ever killed someone he’d call a brother before. IT SCARED HIM. he felt like there was nothing more he could do than to leave, taking that secret with him and praying dorian would keep it to himself as well.
what hurt him is that he had trusted dorian eventually, despite still knowing in the back of his head that dorian isn’t considered “normal”, he had trusted him enough to listen to him and hurt someone he cared for. he felt responsible for adrian dying. what hurt more was how seemingly normal it was to dorian ( again, this is otis’s pov and again, things have been falsified by tomas’ mind control ).
i would like to believe in the end, after the fifth book - between the funerals and it all. maybe even in the huge gap between new years and the last few chapters, vlad had told otis what had really happened to adrian, that it wasn’t dorian nor otis’ fault. that it took the guilt off of otis’ chest, but it also allowed him to eventually forgive dorian - and maybe even apologize, even if he knows he’d never get an answer knowing that he, too, is gone. he’d maybe even thank him for taking care of him when he needed it the most - just someone to look after him so he didn’t ACTUALLY do something stupid.
so no, i don’t believe otis really HATED dorian. i just know otis is very stubborn, especially when he’s been hurt - because he hates being vulnerable, because he’s been burned enough by being so. the most he could do was channel that hurt into indifference and the occasional anger due to his short temper.

stephen things I'm jotting down on my phone--
* birth era is early 1900s nyc and became enrico's drudge at the age of 20.
* kinda was adopted more as a son but was the only one of enrico's drudges to have been given the option of immortality
* might have a vampiric handicap? issues with mental powers like compulsion, mind reading, reaching out with his blood, etc. sometimes can't tell the difference between humans and vampires and relies a lot on watching enrico and dorian's interactions
* immediately hit it off with dorian and really does look up to him as a older, much more experienced brother
* barista at v bar! helping keep tabs on his dads stuff. also hangs out at a nearby nyc university to mingle with humans in his physical age range
* jeanie ( @dxllydearest ) is his younger sister but they're closer to like twins. dorian's baby siblings.
* elysian politics is too much like just listen to dad and follow the rules of the nyc colony and if anyone messes with him, dorian shows up
* gen z meme, probably sends jeanie vines and sends her pics of ugly things with "that u" attached
* visits dorian at his brother's hotel penthouse on his off days and recognizes that dorian is really suffering but all he can do is keep him company
* after dorian's death but before it got back to the ciottis, stephen reached out with his thoughts to look for dorian and kinda just... "we're all really worried, you're safe right?"

sorry but I'm also here for dorian babying and teasing his brother bc wtf after 400+ years there's finally another ciotti and there could have been a mutation in stephen's "change" that made it extremely difficult to sense with his blood (in the same way that ignatius had a crippling allergy to even moonlight)

“After Tomas left Elysia, I was lost. Dorian took me under his wing, tried to show me what more life had to offer. It was foolish of me--I knew the kind of man Dorian was . . . is--but I went along with him to a party full of vampires and humans We killed the humans, drank them dry. And in my drunken state of bloodlust, I relented to Dorian’s will and fed on a vampire as well. Dorian finished him off.”

Elysian history that's not boring: The Dionysian Cult v Athens
▪︎The Dionysian Cult was a collective attempt to create a state outside of Elysia's Councils, the leader of the cult, a woman answering only to the name Silver, wanted a space separate from the rest of Elysia, having had visions that such a space could exist outside the reach of the Pravus for both vampires & humans. Silver wanted this space to encompass the Alps, which made her the Athens Council's problem [& the Parisian Council's problem too, but they were taking a hands off approach, on the basis that it could be useful to demonstrate that such a state will naturally collapse rather than waste resources uprooting the group.] but despite the Athenians best attempts to demonize the cult for its practices of rituals & drunkenness, it had popularity amongst criminals & spiritualists alike & once they'd established control of the mountains they refused to leave or acknowledge the laws of Elysia.
▪︎The main law they were ignoring was that humans couldn't know the secret of vampirekind's existence, instead they were taking every human in the area as drudges or as game specifically for hunting. Naturally, this created the problem of having to stop humans from spreading hysteria throughout Europe, which took up much of the Athens Council's effort, leaving them with little energy to go after the cult itself.
▪︎The cult had no concerns over being discovered by humans, they're numbers were large enough to maintain authority over the human populace throughout the Alps, using mind control & drudges to keep the majority of the population contained. The cult had a collective belief that humans are domesticated creatures & thusly as long as their simple needs were met they would remain docile, leaving the vampires to live free from the law, from hunger, & from the eventual rise of the Pravus.
▪︎The Athens Council had taken to arresting vampires anywhere near the area, holding them indefinitely until they could resolve the problem, which only prompted more Elysians to side with the cult, making their space outside of the law even more appealing to the broader public. Maybe Elysia would benefit from having a law free state.
▪︎"We're all going to live in the mountains & ignore the law" gaining popularity as a concept didn't impress the Elder Council at all, & as soon as the Athens Council requested their intervention they were having meetings on how to handle the cult.
▪︎Once the Elder Council started getting involved, the cult responded with brutal attacks on Athens. Several fledglings to important bloodlines went missing with only warnings directed at the Athens Council, promoting sires throughout the city to hide their fledglings & place responsibility on the Council to protect the city. This spread the Council impossibly thin, making the problem the Elder Council's to solve.
▪︎The Athens Council President Linus Argo lost two of his fledglings to the cult, with instructions to end the pursuit & acknowledge the cult as sovereign if he wanted them back. He was unable to do either as the entire thing was in Em's hands at that point, but shortly following this Silver was apprehended. The cult was without their leader & Athens was without its youths.
▪︎Silver was believed to be ambitious & a drunk, but upon interrogation from the Elders it was discerned that she was also mad, as from their own admittance, "No one who has ever stood before the Elder Council has had the audacity to laugh themselves to tears when asked their motive." But despite being marked as a madwoman, Silver was sought after by the rest of the cult & was willing to comply with most of the questioning from the Elders. She confirmed the cult's involvement in the series of fledgling abductions, maintaining that they were all alive & unharmed, but refused to say anything betraying their location.
▪︎Silver insisted that she had visions pertaining to several powerful bloodlines in Elysia, telling Em that she'd "better side with one brother or the other" before it'd even been made public knowledge that Ignatius had sired any fledglings, marked D'Ablo's bloodline as "surprisingly useful to the welfare of Elysia" decades before Xavier became the leader of Marseille, told Vikas not to "grab at rotten ropes" & would only tell Linus that he & Athens were fucked, "Not tonight, not this century, but you are brilliantly fucked" effectively disparaging many powerful bloodlines throughout Europe.
▪︎Em made it clear that she had no interest in going back & forth over a hostage situation, but that she didn't have much choice in the matter, parsing out the demands of the Elder Council & allowing a cult member into their meeting hall in Antwerp to work out the specifics of their deal.
▪︎Naturally the Elders were focused on protecting Athens & maintaining order first & foremost so arresting the cult was on the back burner. This is the time in which Tomas & Otis get thrown into the mix along with Enrico & Dorian.
▪︎This entire time the Athens Council was continuing to overuse their authority in an attempt to stop more Elysians from joining the cult in cities near the Alps, arresting "suspicious persons" indefinitely & intimidating sires into imposing curfews on their fledglings alongside spreading further misinformation about the abductions. The patriarch of the Ciotti bloodline [who I can't think of a good name for] was considered a leader of the community in Florence & was urged by other citizens in the city to reach out to the Elders as this was breaching the rights of Elysia. Enrico is tasked with going to meet the Elders with these accusations, but insists on taking Dorian with him as it isn't safe for young vampires to be alone near the Alps at this time.
▪︎The two Ciottis run into Tomas & Otis [immediately finding Tomas arrogant & offputting, to no one's surprise] before meeting with Em to report the problems the Athenians are causing. This comes only a few nights after the exchange of Athenian hostages for Silver.
▪︎Rather than put the Athens Council on trial in the midst of this crisis, or pursue the cult into the mountains, Em opts to use the Council as bait, on the chance that the cult attacks Athens directly the majority of their forces would be arrested all at once. This plan works & once the cult's numbers were diminished Em had no problem sending in forces to apprehend the rest.
▪︎During the second bout of questioning, Silver makes a deal to avoid execution in exchange for the full extent of her plan. She quite plainly tells Em that the birth of the Pravus is "as unavoidable as the dawn" & that nothing she did would change the prophecy's trajectory. Her motive was only to create a space beyond the law where vampires could live freely, without fearing the Councils or the night that the Pravus takes power over the whole of Elysia.
▪︎This actually prompted the creation of the law free city of New York, as well as the autonomous cities, which were a more practical way to do what the cult couldn't. While New York is the creation of the Elder Council, the autonomous cities are a unionized group which exist outside of the law but do maintain the secrecy of Elysia.

365 Days to Survive and 365 Ways to Die
read it on the AO3 at https://ift.tt/2YoeTjE
by ZhangYuLian
Things just don't into fall out of the sky. At least, that's what Vlad was told growing up.
When a burning escape pod falls from the sky and lands in Bathory, a buried truth unravels and Vlad's world is turned upside down and inside out. What he thought he knew about his family will change the course of time and it will be up to him to save the world from its inevitable destruction.
Starts in Eleventh Grade Burns. Will contain some plotlines from the original work, but otherwise, the rest of the story will be purely fan-fiction. All Characters from TCOVT belong to the amazing Zac (Heather) Brewer, I only get to use these characters for my own personal interest.
---
I've been re-reading Vladimir Tod (reading it again as an adult years later is SO satisfying). Since I'm into The 100 right now, why not let the worlds collide? Enjoy!
