Audio
apparently....you can only post one audio thing per day?? I wanted to post all three - I recorded A Stately Scholarly Intoning (Imagine The Guqin Accompaniment) Version, a normal version (this one) and an absolutely hilarious attempt at reading the whole thing as fast as I could at a horrific speed. definitely posting that tomorrow as it’s very funny.
here’s the poem again (from shangque’s pov in love between fairy and devil, if you haven’t seen the first post). mistakes most likely ABound but it’s kind of fun to read a thing I have written myself!!!!
属下矢言了!by me
I STILL have a first tone / fourth tone problem. when will it leave me!!! there’s a LOT of those 4/1 mistakes here. sigh. listening exercise for the floor: can you find them? (the 服从 also sounds a bit more like 42 than 22, which is not a tone pair I usually have problems with; I think it’s because I always thought it was 42, which is the problem of learning via Drama only and being totally surprised by what character it is. alas and alack etc)
feel free to have a go if anyone wants!!! just remember it’s hao4zhan4 and not hao3zhan4 - acting as a verb.
or choose your own, more correct thing and tag me!! I’d love to hear everyone’s voices~

in the being ge video, do you know what the guys accent is? (also isn't it the rapper guy? love his voice in general lmao)
He has a northeastern accent, generally speaking. I'm not certain about the specific accent—Jilin maybe?
And yes, he's also a singer. His personal tag is 刘祉辰 and then he also has and account where he make videos with his childhood friend (?), the girl who appears in those videos. That tag is 刘祉辰与王思琦.
There's a group of ~6 main dongbei creators who frequently collaborate (I think they're signed to the same agency) on douyin, and Liu Zhichen is one of them. They generally do a mix of singing (usually at a drinking/table setting) and funny skits and vlogs. The vibe is just supposed to be Handsome Dongbei Guy™ energy, so there's a lot of drinking and singing involved generally.
English added by me :)

And let me just go political for a sec (just as a reminder, please block the smiley face tag :) if you don't want to see this stuff from me)
Someone in the notes of that nyt article post said it's about "the differences between northern china and southern china". Now a lot of people will perpetuate this idea, even chinese people, but the more you learn about china the more you will find that it really is just a stereotype. People in southern china also eat noodles and other wheat-based foods, and people in northern china also eat a lot of rice and rice-based foods (two of the most famous regional rice in china are dongbeidami/东北大米 from dongbei and xiaozhandao/小站稻 from tianjin, and both of these places are in northern china). These foods might take different forms, but in the end that whole thing about the supposed differences between north and south is just a stereotype, just like the stereotypes of "the north prefers savory tofu and the south prefers sweet tofu" and "all sichuan dishes are spicy", and should not be taken seriously. (Depending on the circumstances, you can joke about it, but again, do not take it seriously)
And anyway an article from the nyt about the supposed "differences" between northern and southern china just sounds like they are trying real hard to turn chinese people against each other. Not a great look for nyt, I must say.

[Review]大雾
Title: 大雾 Dense fog
Author: 颜凉雨
Length: 87 chapters + 7 extras
Tag: Fantasy, school, slice-of-life, comedy
Summary [taken from novel updates]:
A spell of dense fog awakens the animal inside.
Under a heavy fog seen only once every century, the whole university had stopped classes and was under lockdown. Yet, there would still be disobedient classmates.
For example, Lin Wu who climbed over the school fence.
For example, Wang Ye who was receiving a confession from the prettiest girl on campus.
As a result, Lin Wu, straddling the top of the fence, heard the most awe-inspiring reason for rejection in all of history—
The school flower: “I like you.”
Wang Ye: “Sorry.”
School flower: “Why?”
Wang Ye: “It isn’t your fault. It’s mine”.
School flower: “You can’t possibly be using that overdone excuse, like ‘I don’t like women’?”
Wang Ye: “I don’t like humans.”
Three days later, the fog cleared up. Lin Wu discovered that he suddenly had overwhelming urges to run around. Moreover, every nightfall, he wanted to sing loudly towards the moon.
Students and teachers alike all experienced different changes in their bodies. This strange phenomenon of “wild awakenings” accompanied a chain of foggy spells across various regions and began to spread to the rest of the world.
Lin Wu: “Thanks to the power of your lucky words, all the humans in the world now aren’t quite human anymore.”
Wang Ye: …
Novel | Novel[translated] | Audio drama
Comments **contains spoiler**
As the summary suggests, the story revolves around the lives of two students after a dense fog left the world with awakened animal traits. It is a light read with tons of comedic moments, mixed in with a tiny bit of family drama. This is part one of three stories, hence it focuses more on introducing the world when the fog initially came.
Highlights
The author is known for her comedic style of writing and crafting of characters. For example, MC and ML first meet after ML confessed to not liking humans, only for his words to backfire when the whole world attains animal traits. If you want to read anything light-hearted, her stories are a definite go-to.
The side characters in the story - i.e. the 333 and 509 dorm mates - are pretty fun characters. E.g. in the 333 dorm, one of the dorm mates is constantly worried about everything in life, another has the standard dongbei style of giving long-winded talks, and the last one is constantly occupied with odd jobs. Together with the MC they make an indomitable rag-tag group of friends.
Family drama-wise, both MC and ML have their own family issues. If the author’s intention is to make us angry at some of their family members’ actions, then they have done a good job of doing so, because some of these characters are truly detestable in their neglect of their children.
Shortcoming
I am personally not a fan of how ML’s family drama is resolved - after having built up all the tensions, Wang Ye just lets the past hurt slide. Even though it is a realistic approach to family feud, as a reader, it sure isn’t satisfying!

My interests focus on the Japanese colonial era in East and Northeast Asia and subsequent decolonization/the ongoing modern effects of that. I don’t support Japanese imperialism.
annoyingly loud about (easian targeted) orientalism
the usual DNIs
🗿 FAQ 🗿
"Why make cultural minority and city OCs?"
The idea of the 'nation' is a fluid one, and our modern strictly bordered Westphalian Nation State is a western construct. Throughout history and cultures, movements of in vs outgroups that define 'national' identity and the ways government and scope of government interact with cultural borders are complex. I approach Hetalia's concept as one that can include groups with a shared cultural consciousness or define themselves as an in-group on a large enough level.
"What is 'Manchuria'? Why do you use 'Manchuria' for your character instead of Dongbei?"
My Manchuria OC doesn't represent the specifically bounded landmass but rather the Manchu people, who are one of but not the only indigenous group in Dongbei. I am well aware of the connotations and roots of the word 'Manchuria', however, given a) the naming conventions of Hetalia (ie Germany instead of German, China instead of Chinese) as well as b) the way 'Manchuria' is commonly accepted in English scholarship when speaking of the concept of a Manchu indigenous land, I choose to use it in place of 'Manchu'. I also have OCs representing the three provinces of Dongbei, and when speaking of the region I use Dongbei or 'Manchuria' in quotations if speaking of history before the Qing, or grouping it in with Inner Asia in some way.
I am not promoting the legitimacy of 'Manchuria' or the legacy of Japanese Imperialism that still affects my family to this day. If you are pro all of that please get off of my blog
I'm a HOI4 playing ww2 bro (half joke)
"What are your thoughts on racebending in Hetalia?"
Same as Irithnova and Peonycat's 👍 I was there when Peonycat's essay was written and we discussed it then. Idc about individualism and individual reclaimation tbqh my priority is broader structures and implications, I can't police you on what you can or can't do, but neither can you police other POC on discomfort.
